Bride Flight (2008)
And they all lived miserably ever after
I was curious about this film and was hoping to see more of Rutger Hauer. Alas, he's killed off in the first few minutes.
This film felt like "Our Town," a play everyone raves about and I'm left questioning the damn point of the whole thing. And the ending of Bride Flight really pissed me off.
The plot is simple. Three women on their way to meet their husbands in New Zealand bond with Frank. Frank shares a lot of chemistry with Ada, but she is already married by proxy and pregnant by her husband, I think. Turns out her husband is an abusive religious zealot.
As a grandchild of a woman who had three husbands and I can't find any divorce records, it bothers me that Ada just doesn't disappear with Frank when they land. I'm sure Marjorie and Esther would have helped. Marjorie loses her ability to have children and Esther, having a one night stand with Frank, gives them her baby. I was kinda hoping Esther and Frank would get together, but no... poor Frank is just there to be used by the women.
Ada flees her husband and goes to Frank. They share a great interlude, but she gets all weepy over leaving her children behind and returns to the abusive jerk. Leaving Frank all alone. Surely she could have taken the dang kids and fled.
The past is interspersed with scenes of the three women getting invitations to Frank's funeral and gathering together to say goodbye.
Poor Frank! He never knew he was a father.
At the funeral, Marjorie and Esther agree to never tell their son he's adopted... sure that will last long in the age of DNA tests... Ada is still with abusive ex (WHY?) and they all ride home in a car... happy? Esther had the most potential and I feel she got the best ending, as she seems content in her life as a single woman... this film just pissed me off.
Poor Frank.
A Furry Little Christmas (2021)
UGH! Guess who makes the sacrifice for this relationship?
I really wanted to like this. I loved all the animals at the beginning and I really like Scarlet. The kid can't act, but that's fine. Then we got to Vermont and the dad hinted that Scarlet needed to stay there so he could retire...and she met the cute doctor...and I started to sense where this was going. Sadly, I was right. Why does the woman always have to make the sacrifice for a relationship?
This woman owns her own vet practice! She has a freaking life (apparently her son is completely fine leaving all his friends behind in NY?), but gives it all up for a guy she's known for two days.
UGH!
Christmas Truce (2015)
I liked it right up until...
This was on Ion TV and as a fan of hokey Christmas movies and period dramas, I was excited to see it. Until they did the whole love interests hate each other but then realize it's love. Ugh. But I lost it when... and maybe I'm confused, but the hero flees the village with his men, a medic and a wounded pilot... after running a bit from the whole battalion of German soldiers... the Hero decides to GO BACK to the village they just fled from to check on the heroine. Leaving his men, the medic and the wounded pilot, alone in the woods with a French spy to escape the Germans who are apparently RIGHT BEHIND THEM judging from the continuous gunfire in the background. At that point I lost all respect for the dude. I hope he's dead. ;)
It's very hokey, but cute. Still, dude, you abandoned your men. No word on whether the black pilot died or not. Stupid movie.
