The final 20 is the best, forget the rest
jasonpauljones-6469013 December 2022
Maybe I shouldn't be too unkind as my title suggests, because Bed Rest does have some good moments it's just that there's a lot of empty parts in between. The story sets itself up amiably with the old spooky house and young couple soon to be parents, moving in. We know straight away there's going to be problems for them, she being heavily pregnant and forcibly bed ridden, doctor's orders, and he being a meek geek who couldn't fight off a cockroach. But once the honeymoon openings are over, this movie limps along slower than a North American winter. But thankfully Melissa Barrera, unlike the rest, at least looks as though she wants to be a part of this and her enthusiasm and somewhat noticeable talents are appreciated and vital in holding the viewer's interest during the movie's lengthy down time. And if you can make it through to the last 20 minutes, a reward of sorts can be obtained from there to the end. Hope you can get there.

Missing bellybutton?
sheldonfortune-3860111 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Scariest part of the movie is when you see she has no bellybutton.

A few jump scares here and there but overall not scary. The ghost kid looks like a normal child.

There is nothing scary about kids, so why have it in a horror movie, this is more about a couple trying to overcome the trauma they experienced when they lost their first baby.

The protagonist is quite annoying and constantly evades doctors instructions to fulfil her own selfish needs. Her husband hires someone to watch over her but this doesn't change much.

It's set in one location which is the typical "we bought a haunted mansion" setup/

A mix of Suspense and Disappointment
mukyammar19 January 2023
Bed Rest" is a horror movie that had its moments of suspense and thrills, but it also had its fair share of slow and uneventful parts. The acting of Melissa Barrera was a standout for me, and her performance helped to keep me engaged in the story. The themes explored in the movie, such as pregnancy, lost pregnancy and lost children trauma, trust issues and mental health issues, made it more adult oriented and added depth to the story. However, the movie's reliance on cheap jump scares and strange whispering voices and sounds felt overused and detracted from the overall experience. The ending was not as satisfying as I hoped it would be, leaving me feeling a bit underwhelmed. Overall, while "Bed Rest" has its merits, it is not a movie that I would highly recommend.

Watchable, but very generic...
paul_haakonsen29 March 2023
Now, I hadn't actually ever heard about this 2022 horror movie titled "Bed Rest" from writer and director Lori Evans Taylor prior to stumbling upon it here in 2023. And with it being a horror movie that I hadn't already seen, of course I wanted to see if it was a good horror movie.

It wasn't. Well, I am maybe a bit jumpy on the trigger here, but I found "Bed Rest" to be a rather mundane, monotonous and generic horror movie about a couple being haunted. Yeah, "Bed Rest" didn't bring anything new to the genre, and what transpired on the screen had already been done numerous times in other similar horror movies. So you're not in for a grand horror experience, should you opt to sit down and watch "Bed Rest".

I will say that the acting performances in the movie were good. It was a very small cast ensemble, but luckily they were talented and were able to carry the movie, despite of having a bland script to work with.

Visually then "Bed Rest" was not innovative. It makes use of a couple of jump scares, but that is it. It wasn't making use of a bunch of special effects.

Sure, "Bed Rest" was watchable, but it was a generic attempt at a movie about a haunting.

My rating of "Bed Rest" lands on a four out of ten stars.

Not bad
BandSAboutMovies12 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Directed and written by Lori Evans Taylor (she produced 216 episodes of Lucky Dog, a Saturday morning show that I have watched and cried through many times and she's the writer for the upcoming Final Destination 6), Bed Rest skipped theaters and went right to Tubi, where we discover that Julie (Melissa Barrera, Scream) and Guy Rivers (Guy Burnet) have moved into a new home just a few months before she's due to have their first child. She has some issues with her pregnancy and is moved to mandatory bed rest -- the title does not lie -- but then there are ghosts troubling her from bedside. Or, as my wife said as she walked in to this, "Is this another one of those dumb Amityville movies you're obsessed with?"

Julie has lost a baby before and has some past mental health issues, which now it seems like she's seeing a five-year-old child in her house, the same age as the boy she lost. Yet when that boy tells her that someone is coming for her baby, that's when this kicks into gear.

There may have been other children murdered in the home, but is there really a haunting? Is this all in our protagonist's mind? Are her husband and nurse Delmy Walker (Edie Inksetter) just gaslighting her into better mental health? Will I watch everything that Tubi has as one of their originals?

In your heart, you know the answer.

Boring
What-a-Punk28 March 2023
Just another horror movie with a most basic horror plot known to humanity. Two more millions of these on the way...

The overall scene was okay, although the house didn't seem creepy, I feel like they failed to maintain any horror atmosphere to it.

It's hard to sympathize the main character, as she is basically constantly punishing people around her and herself for something that cannot be undone or fixed. Creating trouble from nothing. Classic silly behavior, inability to just talk stuff out and reason leads to conflict growing unreasonably and alogically. On the other hand, some might say that is probably realistic with her being pregnant and all... still this excuse doesn't make it any better, as the twist is just shallow and weak, and seems forced.

It's not terrible, if you just have nothing to watch at night and you randomly see this coming up on a TV, you might as well see it through, but overall, it's passable and forgettable. Holds no artistic value I dare to say.

This had its moments
iamtherobotman2 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
For the first hour and 10 minutes this film just plodded along.

After having taken a fall down the stairs inside their new house while heavily pregnant, Julie gets ordered to spend the remainder of her pregnancy in bed, all 55 days of it. She quickly starts to hallucinate - wet footprints on the ceiling, a boy in the cupboard in the bedroom, and becomes convinced that it is the spirit of their first child who was sadly still born.

As she continues with these visions, her husband of course thinks she's slipping back into the madness she suffered after their loss. He brings a home nurse in to look after her while he's at work.

She continues having visions and attempts speaking to the boy. On one occasion he tells her to 'run' and 'she wants the baby'. She of course thinks it's the nurse who wants the baby. Her husband and nurse becoming more convinced she's losing it big time.

The last 15-20 minutes of the film, it just erupts. It all happens. Without spoiling any further i'll just say she was wrong about the nurse.

I will say one thing though. When she delivers the baby there is no umbilical cord and the wee one is incredibly clean for a new born. That moment in the film felt really odd.

I would say this is not a bad effort overall. It does create a certain tension and you do get the feeling coming through of Julie's paranoia and general mental state crumbling.

The ending, more the last 5 minutes or so were odd, shall we say. It was all very clear as to what was happening. There was no confusion, but it was an odd ending. I feel that could've been improved on.

What a waste of time.
tineladwig22 May 2023
Bad acting, terribly shallow storyline, lacks logic and besides them being annoying and better off getting divorced, we don't get to know the characters.

There's nothing good I can say about the movie that would make it worth watching; and it's so poorly made that the moments supposed to be creepy end up being just ridiculous.

We love the little movie theatre we watched this at, but when leaving (while my head was still shaking in disbelief) I felt almost angry with the guy that sold the tickets because everyone who's seen this film should have warned me that I'm about to waste a lot of time watching it.

Surprisingly good movie
funnycommentor7 July 2023
I have to admit, Melissa Barrera was the reason why I decided to watch that movie, because I really loved her on the "Scream" movies. The plot of the movie was very interesting and kinda innovative. The storyline was well-written and everything was well-explained, even though it was kinda simple. The characters were very interesting, well-developed and kinda likeable. The filming location of the movie was just a big old creepy house in the middle of nowhere. The casting was really good and their acting was descent (Melissa Barrera was as good as always). In my opinion, it was a kinda scary movie and there were many jumpscares. The ending scene was definitely unpredictable and I really enjoyed the plot twist. Overall, it was a nice horror movie, very creepy, kinda intense and I would probably recommend it to my friends.

Lori Evans Taylor unfortunately ends her first film with predictable horror cliché moments.
movieman6-413-92951019 February 2023
Bed Rest is a new horror drama directed, written and part produced by Lori Evans Taylor. This is her first directorial work and before this she has only written more episodes of different TV series.

Julie Rivers (Melissa Barrera) and her husband Daniel (Guy Burnet) moved during Julie's pregnancy. Then, when Julie begins to experience complications, she must take it easy for her own health and that of her baby.

Julie ends up in bed like this, but during this period she starts to see more and more strange things. For example, she begins to wonder whether her new home is bewitched, whether she is slowly losing her mind.

Unfortunately, the fact that this film is Lori Evans Taylor's first film work is reflected in the quality of the film. In addition to her own idea for the film, she soon ends up with many horror clichés, which are reminiscent of similar films in which about the same thing happens, such as Insidious or Rosemary's Baby. The film keeps it simple, which keeps it on the predictable side. Most frightening moments or tension build-up remain on the predictable side next to some lame jump scares. Due to these predictable sides and further clichés, the story can seem rather long-winded than it is really exciting.

Melissa Barrera does her best to carry the film as the lead. Unfortunately, due to the tight position her character is propelled into, she just doesn't get many opportunities for this. She has to spend a lot of time on a bed, with no other characters in the film to help or support her. She knows how to show different emotions during these scenes, but has little else to do. The rest of the film cast also gets little to do in the film besides sometimes helping the main characters.

Alright, give it a chance, make to the end, it might impress you
mczanco10 September 2023
I was almost giving up on the middle of the movie, but I carried it through. And I was crying at the end. I think it was because I was holding so little expectation on the movie that I was impressed on how it ended well. With an ending like that one I can just believe that the movie has such rate because people didn't watched it till the end. It was the first movie I watched with that end, it was very impactful and I can't wait to show it to my mom. This is a good movie that will impress you if you are just killing some time. Again, I really wished they to change some things in the movie that was pretty annoying. But the overall, it was a good movie.

Pretty Good Surprisingly, You Just Have to Wait
purplerice00028 June 2023
I will be honest, this movie looked mediocre to me and my thoughts were confirmed after watching the first few minutes. It looked to be an average haunted house movie where a happy family is torn down towards the end. The only thing slightly different was that the wife is pregnant. I stuck with it to see if there was any uniqueness due to that and I'm actually glad I did. Despite the run of the mill introduction, there was actually some intelligence here and there was a lot of substance towards the end. The main actress was very good and she sort of carried this movie on her back. If this movie had the pacing it did towards the last half hour, a lot of people would stick around and enjoy it. The scare factor could have been upped for sure and should have been executed better to be really effective but overall, I would recommend it for a simple horror movie night.

Watch it only if you are fan of Melissa Berrare
rajat_12422 January 2023
Started watching this movie with lot of expectations - Good horror, and captivating storyline.

On the contrary, no major chills, a plain horror movie that picks up only in climax. But the ending is super simple. Melissa looks terrific though and if u r fan of hers, then u won't be disappointed.

Screenplay was tad too straight, no major horror elements at the start till mid, i thought it should be a great build up for the climax but the story never picks up. Some thrill in the mids, but that too was too short. However, it's not a bad movie, direction and production value was good and could be in your list if there is nothing to watch.

not scary, more a romantic flick
trashgang22 February 2023
Saw the trailer at a theatre and looked promising. Seen it and I can say that it wasn't what I expected from it.

Throughout the movie nothing really happens except the apperance of a lost child appearing as a ghost or as an imagination? That is out to find by the husband. The problem with supernatural flicks and ghosts is that it's mostly not scary at all. You see the boy and you just see a boy, nothing squeamish at all. It's only towards the end when it all comes clear what is going on that this flick picks up.

What it do has are a few jump scenes if you aren't used to see this kind of flicks. But overall it's all about memories of a lost child and the end it all becomes a bit cheesy.

Sad to say but I better did some bed rest.

Booooooooooooring
Skruffbagg30 October 2023
My god this film is dull.

It is the most cookie-cutter example of the "haunted house" genre, made slightly bearable by a better than average central performance by Melissa Barrera.

There are no scares, just loud music stings employed to elicit a jump reaction in your body, but because they are all so incredibly obvious, predictable and telegraphed I didn't even get that reaction.

I read somewhere the last 20 minutes is good but I couldn't be bothered to find out, switching off before the hour mark to do something really scary - my laundry.

This is grim, boring, cliched nonsense. It gets more than 1 star because the lead actor was trying, at least.

Don't waste your time.

Wow. Awful.
phoenix_ar7 October 2023
I watched this because of a recommendation, but I want those two hours back. The acting was okay. But the story was horrible. It was predictable, cliche and just plain boring. I am disappointed at what they call "horror" movie these days. There is no such thing as originality any more. It's the same old tired plot lines with a few cheap jump scares thrown in. Are there any original film makers and writers out there anymore? Don't waste your time watching this garbage. You can use your time better taking a nap, or maybe this movie will bore you enough to make you sleep. Either way, avoid at all costs. Don't say I didn't warn you.

No rest for the ... screaming
kosmasp22 June 2023
Yes I know the saying goes "wicked", but I had to do a pun - which as always is not intended. And as you can see I put a twist on my usual "saying". And horror movies are not all the same either. Yes you get one of the leading ladies of the (newer) Scream (movies) franchise ... does that mean you are to expect her to play a similar role to the other one? Well, I would tell you that that is not the case.

But it also was better than I expected - maybe a 6 would have done it too, but I reckon I was feeling generous. Because the movie may not be that scary (actually you may be even bored - well some of you) ... but it does tell a story and it is quite tight. So while I don't like it when horror movies say "this is not a horror movie" .... maybe you should be aware that this may not be what the trailer "promised" ... I kind of knew that the voiceover was done for the trailer and would not be in the movie - just one of the things to expect or rather not to.

Be aware of what this is (dealing with the past mostly) ... and you will be ok ... something that may not be true when it comes to the main characters here ... or is it?

Weak and Amateurish Waste of Time
rhood-6198011 October 2023
Tldr; don't waste your time with this submid movie.

I cannot understand why anyone was raving about this lukewarm mess or why it garnered any high reviews here, unless someone paid for them. A grotesque lack of explanation for a series of illogical setup decisions, coupled with a last-minute plot twist that felt like it wasn't even in the script until halfway through filming because it had zero foreshadowing whatsoever, all amount to an uninteresting slog of a film that's barely worth the talent of the main cast. The jump scares are few, unimpactful and badly timed, there's barely any suspense and what little drama there is comes strictly from a cliché stereotype of a strained marriage. Trying to shoehorn some kind of "letting go" moral into the narrative just made it even clumsier and obnoxious, especially since said moral barely gets referenced again when the supernatural elements actually start playing out. One could easily cut off the first two thirds of the movie and make a much better short film out of just the last twenty minutes or so, since everything relevant to the climax of the plot only comes out at that point. Worse still, it's not bad -enough- to be entertainingly bad, no horrifically bad acting or overly ridiculous practical effects to laugh at, no scenery-chewing or overacting to give it any charm. Overall, the movie just feels like it was thrown together as they were filming by someone too convinced of their own brilliance to accept that they had no clue what they were doing and released with an unironic "nailed it" afterward like a cinematic cake wreck. It's not awful but it's simply not good at all.

Not a bad Horror movie but it's not as good as the Scream films
The plot of Bed Rest is how after a terrible injury happens to young pregnant mother named, Julie Rivers who is portrayed by Melissa Barrera, she is ordered to stay in her bed throughout the rest of the duration of her pregnancy, and that's when a lot of creepy and unexpected events start to occur, as her husband, Daniel, goes about his days. There's quite a bit of good acting in the movie, and I do think that if people watch this horror film and just focus on what this movie is trying to do and they don't compare Melissa's performance in this movie to her performance as Sammantha Carpenter in Scream 5 and Scream 6, then they will enjoy this film. It's kind of slow in the very beginning, and it does take some time for the creepy and scary events to come into play in this movie. The reason why I can't give this movie a full 8 stars, which is the most that this horror film should get and not any higher, unless you watched this movie when you were drunk or high, is because of the pacing. In other horror films like Halloween and Scream for an example, there's something horrifying that happens right away and it hooks the viewer into the story. Here we have about a half hour of talking and socializing before anything remotely scary happens, and when the scares do happen they are more creepy and are very mild. I found this film very intense, but I didn't find it particularly scary. Since Melissa Barrera is the main star of the movie I thought that this was going to be a very good one. It's an okay horror film and it should entertain horror fans who are willing to sit through the half an hour of what feels more like a drama film that was made for the Lifetime movie network. The casting wasn't terrible, it was decent and it did have people who I was unfamiliar with who did a very good job acting wise. The editing wasn't to good, I felt like the director should've had the editor cut down the talking scenes in the beginning of the film to about fifteen minutes. When Julie is on bed rest after her accident, which I won't tell the readers what it is, so they can see for themselves, she wears a nightgown that reminded me of the type of clothing that would've been more suitable for the 1920s-1930s time period. The cinematography was decent and it did look professionally made, not a cheap film student project. I did like the directing, but the script for the actual movie could've been better, it wasn't awful, I have watched movies that are terrible and poorly done, mostly because of screenwriters and sometimes directors who don't want to put any effort into telling a great story, in any genre, and the script for Bed Rest isn't a terrible one, the only problem I have with the script is the pacing that it set, and that's all. I only recommend Bed Rest for Horror Buffs and Horror Fans who are able to really pack their patience and who are able to handle the fact that this movie doesn't have any kind of a hook in the beginning.

7 Stars out of 10.

I feel well rested after watching this...
I was pretty underwhelmed by this one in all honesty. It wasn't unentertaining per se, it was just so unoriginal and expected it almost made it a little boring.

I didn't develop any real intrigue until about an hour in. The acting was decent enough but the script and the score made it feel pretty hokey and almost dated at times. The majority of the scares relied on auditory and visual jump scares and the creep factor was almost non existent for me. I found the ending, while pretty Hallmark-y, probably the most interesting part of the movie.

In general this was just too generic and blue print for me, leaving me really wanting something interesting and exciting. 4.5 rounding down to a 4, probably would not recommend but maybe not bad for an introduction to horror.

Surprising Good
AvidNumo1 February 2023
I wasn't expecting much from this movie, it was free on Tubi, but wow was I shocked. The story is great and Melissa's acting is top notch here. I highly recommend this, if your a fan of horror movies. This movie doesn't seem like it was made with blockbuster finances, but it has a lot of heart. It looks like it was made by a Director and cast who loved the story and wanted to bring it to life. The setting and the lil effects that are in this movie are well balanced and doesn't take anything from the story. The cast all do a great job and like I previously stated Melissa Barrera is great in this.

Bad "horror" movie with bad jumpscares
borgvilmavb6 October 2023
Really a letdown. I thought this movie would be entertaining and hopefully scary based on the premise and trailer, however it was really not good.

Not a single good jumpscare in this "horror" movie. Not one. Audio does not match the actions at all, same with sound effects.

Pacing was bad, and ending really really really not a climax.

Acting was meh, and in general characters were bleak.

Watched this with friends and at the end of it we were all wanting it to be over so we could go watch a good movie finally.

Only reason it gets a 2 is because it was sorta entertaining after a while, simply by how laughable the "scary" moments were and how bad it was.

The film definitely deserves attention
imperatorm21 December 2022
The film is quite with a deep meaning that you do not need to keep the past, otherwise you can very easily lose your real happiness, which is right under your nose. After all, the bulk of real people live like this: they always live in the past, think about the future, but at the same time never be in the present, and therefore people very often lose their true happiness. The film is very difficult emotionally and psychologically, under the oppressive atmosphere of horror. It cannot be viewed/evaluated superficially. Of course, I'm not trying to say that the film is unique or perfect. It's pretty average, maybe a little higher. However, the idea embedded in it is good.

I liked Melissa. She conveyed all her feelings very clearly. You believe her, you worry about her. She is generally a promising actress. Melissa is very real. I have seen her in many projects: the slasher "Scream", the TV series "breathe", where she copes with all the roles very well. Of course, she has a lot to grow, but mostly she is successful. And although I'm not a fan of Melissa, but she's very.

A Hit!!!
ttreakle23 February 2023
What a great horror movie. Filled with good jump scares, character's, and special effects. This one definitely surprised me and is leaps above my expectations. I love the backstory we get with the mother and father. The tragic and sometimes happens to parents at birth of their child. I really enjoyed this movie but my only flaw is that I wish it was a little longer. I definitely can recommend this one. This may not be the exorcist or the omen it certainly is one movie I'll watch again. The husband plays the typical character and he is my least favorite. That however won't stop me from saying check it out!!

Warning: Spoilers
Definitely not as much horror as I was expecting. But still a good story that was not predictable. Now a days you can always see what is coming next, but in this movie that was NOT the case at all. The only screw up was how she gave birth to the bby, then just handed it to her husband like what about the umbilical cord? Who cut it? As for Tubi originals this was one of the best ones so far that I have seen. As a mother this was a great movie. More of a drama than a horror, there was a little horror in it towards the end. Nothing that would make you jump out of your seat or anything, but still a good watch. As always, be your own judge and see it. I recommend it, and would not mind watching it again.
