Not quite like the Webtoon
dramahorse8 October 2018
This was my very first K-drama! I first read the Orange Marmalade series on Webtoon and loved it! When I found out this existed I was super excited but it turns out that it's not really like the Webtoon (especially the second part!) BUT it was still really good, well casted and a good story as long as you keep in mind that it isn't a whole lot like the Webtoon.

Good, but still a missed opportunity.

I did not read the webtoon series so had no idea what this series was about. It was worth the watch, regardless of whether it follows the source material or not specifically because of Seol-Hyun Kim. She does an excellent job in both of her roles (past and present) and she carries the show.

The secondary male protagonist (another singer/actor) did a very fine job in his role as well. I think the reason this show is not as highly rated as it should be is because of the confusion from jumping one timeline to the other was not as well done as it could have been.

The outfits and settings in the Joseon Era were fantastic, but the vampire angle was a little overplayed perhaps, but at the time it was made perhaps that made more sense. I think the biggest stumbling block to the series is the main protagonist (who I actually like a lot as an actor in Hotel Del Luna).

He does his part well, but his character is REALLY hard to like at times (in both the past and present). Some of the things he says to Seol-Hyun Kim (and others) is just jaw droppingly rude and it was difficult to understand why she had any interest in him at all at points.

Still worth seeing though and is an entertaining diversion for sure.

This was my first ever Korean Drama. I didn't even know it had been based off of a webtoon. I loved it, but the part in which they jumped into the past confused and bored me, so I skipped through it. Other than that... wooooAAAAAAA

Not mad just disappointed

Honestly. I read the story many times now and they missed alot of great parts. And they also took out many of the OG good characters. I firmly do no believe they deserve the rights to the name "Orange Marmalade". If this was to be its own series with its own name I would have been fine with it. Sure it would remind me of the reading material but I would not have been upset as much as I am now.

It's pure cheese but I love it. It has a good story; fantasy, comedy and it's fun. What's not to like 😊

Good enough

Maybe I'm being too generous towards this drama and I'm giving it a 4 out of 10. Because there were too many down sides about this drama. First of all, the story: a girl, who's a vampire, tries to hide her true identity in her high school. In the meantime, the most popular boy in her school falls for her. But the problem is that he hates vampires. And so, when he finds out about her secret, he gets into an accident and gets amnesia. That's season 1. Season 2 is about the same characters, only they are now living in the past. The guy is a scholar and an aristocrat and the girl is a butcher's daughter and a vampire as well. They eventually fall in love, but they are stuck into a vampire-human war. After that, we move on to the last season (each season is about four episodes or so, as the drama has only 12 episodes!). In the 3rd season, we are back in the modern world, where the boy still can't remember the girl, who volunteers for a programme, where she has to reveal her vampire identity to the world and try to live along with the humans, who don't accept her. Okay, the concept was good. I particularly liked the second and the third season (well, half of it), as they were quite interesting. The first season felt too rushed, and, as I was ignorant to the fact that the drama was divided into three seasons, I was surprised that the story was concluded in episode 3! An other thing that didn't work for me, was the band concept. I thought it was childish and too unrealistic, not that they weren't talented, but to get to be idols?? In addition, the performances were so so. The female lead wasn't good, especially in the first season, but got a little better towards the end. The second male lead was surprisingly good, and I liked his story and his whole appearance of this bad boy vampire. The male lead was good as well, but that was expected. The costumes were really nice, and, surprisingly, the special effects were realistic enough. So, 4 out of 10.

Great Premise Poor Execution

Warning: Spoilers
This show had a great idea, a world where vampires exist and are public knowledge and are shunned by society combined with a Romeo and Juliet type love story between and vampire and human.

However what we get is duplication. The story starts in modern time with some character development. Then after 4 episode's moves intro a historical setting with the same characters that essentially repeat the same story over 5 with swords and arrows rather than music and a small amount of extra progression of characters. Then we get three episodes back in modern time but with the male lead losing his memory and we end up repeating the character development. This could have been an excellent series if they actually used the episode count to progress the story. By the end of ep 12 we are basically at the same point we were at the end of ep 4 and then again at ep 9.

It's a real shame because the world presented in this deserves to be fleshed out more.
