Surprisingly enjoyable
Sergiodave27 August 2020
Black Widows is a low budget black comedy about women gaining revenge on their men. I was surprised how much I enjoyed this, the plot is good, the three leading actresses worked together well, the dialogue is a bit clunky, but it had a good amount of humour, whilst also addressing some serious issues. Well worth giving it a try. A thumbs up.

a real top to be discussed
playwithtoy12 August 2016
to be fair this type of humor is not my style so its hard for me to give it an objective review

the humor was little smarmy (again not my type of comedy) but the subject was really real. i mean honestly how many times has this come thru mind? probably more than is comfortable. its a what if on dead end and abusive relationships

there were def some great other moments like it seems almost unreal that some people would be that misogynistic but somewhere you know its happening to someone out there

and a midnight desert killing is always great in a movie

see at your own risk - the subject matter even tho its done comedic-like will at least make you think twice!

solid
ashlynnhats12 August 2016
Honestly, I thought it was decent. Some of the acting could have been better, and some of the scenes begged to be shot differently, but ultimately I think viewers can just appreciate what the movie was about. Black Widows is a commentary on modern rape culture (which is itself so disgusting it's basically satire). Men have this ultra- shitty tendency to blame women for their own rapes (i.e. she wanted to find a guy so she had sex early in the relationship, she'd had sex with him before, they were dating, etc.). That kind of destructive thinking is subverted by the writing in the movie. Sure, you could watch it and blame Darcy for what happened to her, but *you* would be the asshole, since the movie made it clear she was just a normal person who got hurt by someone she trusted. Thought it was a nice addition to the conversation surrounding rape culture.

Bland misandry masquerading as female empowerment.
jmclennan18 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Three women friends - Darcy (Elizabeth), Nora (Graham) and Olivia (Kocee) - are all having terrible luck with their relationships. Olivia is in the middle of an ugly divorce from Adam. Nora's boyfriend Ryan is a control freak. And while Darcy's new friend Blair (Brown) initially seems fine, he turns out to be the worst of them all. After he refuses to take no for an answer, the trio decide revenge is a dish best served naked in the middle of the desert. Unfortunately for him, Blair ends up lacking a pulse. Unfortunately for the film, it takes forever to get to this point, and for the vast majority of its running-time the promised "dark comedy" is neither dark nor comedic.

The writer of this was a date-rape victim herself, and it pains me to say so, but this might be the problem. According to the director, "This was an opportunity for her to wrestle with her demons." It would probably have been better if she'd gone to therapy, written bad poetry or anything, rather than trying to turn those demons into a movie - especially one apparently trying to occupy any subgenre of comedy. For what comes over here is a relentless, bitter tone of (probably understandable, I will admit, given the writer's history) distrust and loathing of the opposite sex, which permeates every scene of the film to such an extent that any potential humour is strangled. You can't even call it dark, it's closer to... jaundiced.

If the film had started with the three women standing over Blair's body, and gone forward from there, it might have worked. For the trio have a cheerfully apathetic approach to the escalating mayhem, and there finally is dark comedy present, in the way they bicker about trivia like getting blood on their shoes. However, it is the very definition of "too little, too late," and any interest and attention was already pushing up the daisies by this point.

Terrible
Lexiii6731 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I don't see anything cute or funny about murdering four guys. Granted the first guy deserved it, the other two were jerks but didn't deserve to die. The last guy was a cop doing his job. How is this adorable? If this movie were about men killing women it wouldn't have been acceptable. And how were these three morons not caught? Totally unbelievable movie and a waste of my time. Bad acting as well.

Worst Movie I've seen this year.
greyfeatherd9 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
My favorite genre is black/dark comedy Whomever was deranged enough to give this 10 stars should be sushi punched. Bad acting, the sets all look like soulless bad porno sets. The women seem vapid and no there is not good enough motive for their murders. They come off as totally sociopaths and the feeble attempts for dark humor fall flat. I have 15 minutes left of this dreck and think I will just finish this review and then shut it off. Too many great movies then to waste it on a horrid flick that is nothing but one man hating moment after another. Unless you're below 18, you really don't need to have parasite friends who you depend on for all advice and support. I think its solely an American female type of deal. Women in other countries are more mature (whatever their social standing may be) and depend on family and life interest then hanging around with other women and constantly being on the make. Terrible movie and only basic common females could enjoy it.

see this..it's fun
pryndar11 August 2016
I loved this film...it took me back to the 60's and the dark comedies like Putney Swope and early Peter Sellers movies...I love the dark yet subtle laughs of those films...and if you didn't get it...well we were not going to the movies again! The fact that the ladies were falling in "murder" all the time just cracked me up.I was blown away by the actress who played "Nora" Bridget Graham..this is a star on the rise.It is hard to be beautiful AND funny..she stole the show.I really got a kick out of way the gals were stumbling though this nightmare...rather Marx Brothers-ish.Kick back and get ready for some giggles...The second time for me was better because I knew the punchline,as it were...and it was fun to go back in time (my 20's) and imagine a few times I wish these were my girlfriends

A slow-paced revenge movie...
paul_haakonsen15 February 2022
When I read the synopsis for the 2016 comedy "Black Widows", I must admit that I was definitely intrigued, and it sounded like "Black Widows" from writer Jordan Elizabeth and director Venita Ozols-Graham could be a very enjoyable movie.

And now just having seen the movie, I must admit that I perhaps did have my hopes and expectations up a tad too much for this movie. Sure, "Black Widows" was watchable, but it was ultimately a rather generic and rather forgetable movie actually.

The storyline was sort of bland. The concept of the movie was good and there was a lot of potential, I will say that much. But the pacing of the narrative was just soul-suckingly slow and there wasn't really a whole lot of interesting things going on throughout the course of the movie. And that was ultimately a drainer to the overall experience of the movie.

The acting performances in the movie were good. And while I am not familiar with lead actresses Brigitte Graham, Megan Messmer and Brandy Redd, then I will say that they put on good performances and carried the movie quite well.

"Black Widows" didn't impress me, and this is not really a movie that I would recommend you rush out to get to watch. And for me, this movie was the type of movie that you watch once and never again.

My rating of "Black Widows" lands on a four out of ten stars.

"Spider Hater"
rynoauto-org10 August 2016
The beginning of this movie creeped me out from the intro. I hate spiders, so I was quite reluctant to let the reel roll on. However, I had to find out what these ladies were up to. I discovered that the 3 close friends were just trying to live with the men they thought, loved them. Halfway in and I could sense the need they had to kill and eat their mate, as the title so creatively describes. These girls had quite the sense of humor throughout the entire film and Nora was hilarious when she had to talk to a cop. Great acting by the guys for their creepy dickhead antics and they really got what the deserved. The music was spot on and the timing of each soundtrack was pretty creative. I would see it again. Not too sure how I'll sleep tonight, maybe on the couch with a flashlight or gun in my hand. "jus tiddin" Great job.

Weird storyline
jkt200627 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Why would you kill your guys one by one if you are having issues with them. Yes, the guy who raped deserved to be dropped in the middle of nowhere but the other two was like too much. And worse the cop in the end, I felt really bad for him. The story went just too far in the name of revenge.

A Black Widow's Nature
JonConor15 August 2016
It deals with some very serious and real issues to be sure, but there's also a lighter story of revenge here than can you have laughing at times. The main character is raped, which obviously devastates her. Luckily she has a couple concerned friends that are immediately there for her and they hatch a plan to get back at the guy that did it. Of course, nothing ever goes as planned.

It's pretty refreshing to see a film being led by some nuanced female characters and watching the movie made you feel like you were on this crazy adventure with them.

Definitely worth checking out!

A delightfully well-balanced dark dramedy (with horror overtones - or should it be undertones?)
jbmw11 August 2016
This is a thoroughly enjoyable black comedy about revenge that gets out of hand. Three friends band together to get even for a devastating assault. Of course no one will listen to or believe the victim, so they set out to balance the scales of justice--but justice tips over into disaster as the playbook goes out the window on the first encounter.

Director Ozols-Graham has done miracles with a tiny budget--squeezing every single bit of production value out of every well-crafted sequence. And she manages to keep the story tripping along the balance beam of black humor and dramatic horror. This mix of genres has created a truly interesting and entertaining film.

Emotions trump CGI and humor jumps out as effectively as the unexpected plot twist. Black Widows is worth your time. Enjoy!

This movie is really funny, and really well made
greditzer7 August 2016
I really loved this movie. It deals with a serious subject, date rape, in a dry and funny kind of way, if that makes sense. This is a first time director, Venita Ozols-Graham, who made the jump from 1st Assistant Director to Director, which is very rare. She does a great job and get really funny and droll performances out of her actors. The girls are really good, and at least 2 of the 3 need their own series. Their timing and delivery is spot on. The guys in the movie are all real dicks, which, well, a lot of us are. And the girls get their revenge, in a funny way. Oh...and the girls are all beautiful. I am so in love with all three of them:)

Great Dark Comedy, Loved it!
angelbrock-0204410 August 2016
This movie kept me on the edge of my seat. It had some very funny parts in it. The girls had a great plan and it worked out quite well in the end, to say the least. The actresses are hysterical and they have a good friendship as most "girl circles" do. As for the men in the film, they are "as usual" never listen and arrogant. Like a lot of men in real life. The guy that gets it first, really got what he had coming to him and that obviously wasn't the plan from the start, but was well deserved. I don't really want to blow the entire movie by critiquing it, that being said "I loved this movie". I just hope my husband can sleep tonight. Lol

Quality Film!
Staceyrowens8 August 2016
Great film! It's current and on top of its game when dealing with boy issues. There isn't a girl out there who's been in a situation like this movie shows that hasn't wanted to seek revenge on a guy for treating them poorly. This film is smart and well done. The cast are really fantastic and talented. For a low budget film, it looks and feels high quality, which is no surprise with a veteran like Venita Ozols Graham directing and producing. The script is well written with dialogue that is funny and current. The trio of girls are realistic characters that anyone can relate to. Absolutely worth the time to watch. You will love it. And you will want to buy it on iTunes. ;)

Bloody good time! Walks the line between thriller and buddy comedy well.
josh-parrick9 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This flick is a fast paced, fun ride that gets better each time you watch it. Lots of little nuances and great little bits of humor sprinkled throughout. The story walks the line between a thriller and buddy comes. It has some serious subject matter, like the violating online date Darcy goes on, and that contagious humor that comes from partaking in crazy antics with your closest friends, like the 3 main girls plotting hilarious revenge on Darcy's violator. The movie really hits it's groove when the revenge plan goes wrong in every which way and the girls will have you laughing and gasping at what they do. Black Widows is a witty, funny, silly, and sexy way to show how cool chicks get through life's hard-balls with good friends and a sense of humor. Worth watching!

It's adorable...and they're girls after my own heart!
richardsstephanie10 August 2016
This is an adorable movie! These girls' friendships are like my girls back home in NOLA, save for us having, you know, Black Widowed any of our boys! Not there haven't been a few we would have like to have permanently ejected from the club. It's in the vein of Very Bad Things, but for us girls so no strippers on towel hooks and saw's alls. I really liked the acting and these ladies seem so real it almost feels like I'm hanging out with my friends. So, if you're a up for a silly fun ride, it's a fun hour and a half. Well worth a buy or rent. Grab the popcorn and ice cream - and your favorite girlfriends. Or even your boyfriend or husband (if he dares).

A real trip into the minds of 3 young ladies
deehrler2 September 2016
This is actually a very realistic movie that could wake up a lot of people. Some guys still see 'making' women as trophies. Scoring early is important. They brag without thinking about the consequences and discard the trophies on any whim. Now the tide is turning. Those clever feline demons have figured out an answer and are striking back. Its all in fun but very relevant.

Every young man should be required to see this movie. But on the other hand I don't recommend that they take a date unless they are really trustworthy. In fact, this movie should be banned for women to see... period. If this flick came out 25 years ago, there might not be many of us dudes left. :)

Nice Balancing Act!
joegraham111 August 2016
Terrific comedic timing, especially Brigitte Graham and Shelby Kocee. Great sound track moves it along. The film balances between drama and comedy well…difficult to do! Nice transformation from girls looking for themselves and love to black widows….cool! Enjoyed the clever concept of how to deal with rape directly. And the gradual evolution they each experience is understandable, given their difficult relationships with the men in their lives. A comedy, yes, but firmly rooted in reality. Nice too how no one's perfect in this story. Not a man bashing tale at all. The women have their own flaws (Nora gets fired over donuts, Olivia endures abuse silently and Darcy sleeps with men too quickly in her desperation to find love). The men aren't quite as fleshed out but are realistically acted by three (oops, four with the cop) terrific actors. Everyone feels real and the outrageous situations they find themselves in are crazy but rooted in reality. Good job!

A refreshingly funny take on a very sensitive, relevant subject
morningsun6611 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Recently came across this film online and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised with the refreshingly funny way the director tackled an extremely sensitive and hugely relevant subject! If I had to compare this film to any out there, I'd say it has the feel of a female version of 'Very Bad Things.'

Without too many major spoilers -- Black Widows centers around our main character, Darcy and her two best friends, Nora and Olivia. After Darcy is the victim of date rape, she plans an innocent revenge on her rapist, enlists the help of Nora and Olivia, only to have things spiral hugely out of control over the course of one event-filled evening.

The story moves along at a great pace, our three main characters play off each very nicely and the acting is very solid. I was also impressed with the way the director very delicately handles this sensitive subject -- riding that edge of "dark humor", yet not crossing over the line so as to trivialize anything. Very hard to do, yet Black Widows pulls this off.

I strongly recommend this film to both women and men. Fun ride!

From The "Man Hater"
jordan-276-82014111 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I'll tell you what I have told everyone else about this movie:

This movie wasn't meant for everyone. It was meant to be polarizing. The movie depicts its characters in shades of gray...much like life. The women aren't only victims and the men aren't solely villains. The characters evolve and change until they're all victims and villains in their own way. They fit into both boxes because most people do.

What you have to remember when watching this movie is that 65% of it... is true. It was inspired by a real life rape that spawned a revenge plot that quickly turned into a movie because let's be real, most people aren't John Wick. (The filming of which spawned a real life love story)

The film is not realistic or plausible because it is not meant to be. It's meant to be a fantastical and cheeky. It turned a negative experience for one person into a positive experience for many while pointing out deficiencies in the current status quo. Darcy isn't the "perfect" victim because most women aren't. She just trusted the wrong person and I think every woman can relate to that on some level. Nora is the lovable slacker who hides behind a facade of not caring because that's easier than admitting she is hurt. Olivia is the friend who always pushes for better for her friends even when they dislike her for it.

As a woman, society teaches us that we're competition for jobs, men and general attention. We're taught to push each other out of the way because there aren't enough slots for all of us instead of fighting for there to be more room for each of us. These women advocate for each other. They fight for the best for each other. It feels out of the norm because it IS out of the norm. They aren't just friends, they're de facto sisters to each other. We should seek to boost each other up, not tear each other down.

I want these women to be my friends and I am lucky enough that they are.

Great Film!!!
leifholt11 August 2016
Its not often that an Indi flick takes me by surprise like Black Widows did. This fun, corky, sexy movie is perfect if you're tired of overly complex Hollywood flop Blockbusters.

The acting was great and the film looks good for an Indi.

The central theme of the movie is about a group of life long friends who find themselves in a life changing situation. They band together and take charge of the situation and their lives.

Sprinkled with some comedy and quick one-lines, it makes for a great ride!

Definitely worth it!

dark comedy deals with the unexpected consequences of three girls looking out for each other
chuckrolando14 August 2016
BlacK Widows is about women dealing with men. Men they put their faith and hopes in... until things begin to spiral. More proof that men and women really do occupy different planets, The moral compass gets kind of lost when accidents happen... This movie builds well and it cuts pretty deep without even trying too hard. You don't need a huge budget to make a good story work. In this dark but not too dark comedy, three women try to do the right thing and have to overcome obstacles(men) along the way! ...and It gets very crazy. We need to see more movies like this one -movies that empower women both on the screen and behind the camera. The entirely female soundtrack works really well, too.

Deliciously Adorable
phduncanson22 May 2017
Cute, fun, and awesome! Girls getting revenge for the misdeeds of men. This movie was shot very well with an anamorphic lens. Although the cinematography was basic, it held all the elements together on a budget. The acting was on par and the dialogue was fast drawing you into the crazy world of women bent on revenge. And the women! Well let's just say, all of them deliciously adorable… with a bit of a nasty edge. Smoke a joint ya'll and have some fun! Super fun twist at the end! Not gonna take your breath away and make you commit to a life long partnership... but definitely a fun romp in the park!

Really fun watch
cmarty57427 September 2016
So I am always willing to watch almost anything. These days though there is so much content out there it's hard to make a choice. This, however was recommended to me and I really had a blast checking it out. If my friend had not mentioned it I probably never would come across it, but glad I did. Funny, quirky, a nice change of pace. The story was actually believable while being absurd, in a good way, at the same time. Really liked the cast in this movie. Also, these days there are a lot of super hero movies out there. Which I do like. But I also like things that don't involve guys with capes and super powers. I also felt like the production value was really high. It is an Independent film, but didn't have a totally independent feel. I would recommend to others and I will. Bravo! Fun Movie!
