An Ultimately Flawed But Fresh and Original Entry For The Franchise
icefarrow25 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This is a review for the original Japanese version, not the English dub. Please don't watch it in English, the voice acting is dreadful.

So, before you get into this show you should be made aware that there is a real hate for it within parts of the Yu-Gi-Oh! community. The majority of these complaints however are over minor issues, and people expecting more fanservice than they ultimately received. For example this show brings back legacy characters from previous installments in the franchise, such as Duel King Jack Atlus, Edo Phoenix, and more. However, people were annoyed at these characters being different to their counterparts in the other series despite it being set in a parallel universe. However, obviously there's some bias here as this is my opinion.

Onto the good, the bad, and the disappointing:

The musical themes (for the most part) were on point. A lot of new and interesting themes that really add to the duels, made with a wide variety of instruments as well.

Almost all of the characters were enjoyable; main, side, and even one-offs. However, naturally there are a few exceptions: the shivers kid and calculator brat especially. On the other side of the coin a whole host of new and unique fan-favourites are introduced such as Chojiro, and Gongenzaka.

The variety of monsters & playstyles was a nice addition too, it really helps to make the world(s) feel lived in, and certain characters stand out. However, yes, the introduction of action spell cards does undercut the tension of times, as you know the hero will pull off victory at the last minute utilising this deus ex machina.

It's just a shame poor arc pacing issues, and an underdeveloped villain bring down the overall plot. After the whole tournament arc in the standard dimension, certain arcs are become really stretched e.g. Friendship Cup, whilst others become rather rushed and dissatisfactory e.g. XYZ Dimension. Whilst I enjoyed the ending to the show, it's really easy to understand how people despise it.

And Z-ARC, whilst built up to be a real menace under an interesting premise, ends up being a shallow and underdeveloped character. He really could have been the next Marik if done right.

All in all, it's a show that fails to delivers on what it promised. The writers set the bar too high, and struggled to deliver. It's an ultimately enjoyable disappointment. Whether you enjoy or are disappointed by this show depends on how forgiving you are.

Good show

Warning: Spoilers
I did not like it at the beggining until the conflict started. Then it started getting better and better until they get to the fusion dimension. There was so much potencial with this show, they could have used atticus or zane in the xyz dimension since their archetipes have xyz monsters. They rushed to the fusion dimension and the conclusion was dissapointing. It could have been the ultimate yugioh show.

The anime is good, but read my paragraph

Warning: Spoilers
I watched it, but I do not like the way it introduced other familiar characters. YU-GI-OH, GX, 5DS, and Zexal seem to be connected in the same world. For instance, in YU-GI-OH GX, Jaden meets Yugi. And in YU-GI-OH 5DS Yusei knows about Yugi. Therefore, they all exist in same world, but in different time line. The hint is Domino City. YU-GI-OH! ARC-V treats them as a different world. That is what I disliked about the series. However, I dislike them removing Jaden, and etc. Despite that fact, The anime is really fun to watch. It just feels rushed because they tried to introduce a different story.

A mediocre disappointment overall

Warning: Spoilers
When I first heard of Arc-V I skipped it to wait for the dub but I regret watching the subs to the final episode. People told me it was way better than Zexal and was gonna be as good as 5d's. Its honestly bad and is probably the worst Yu-Gi-Oh anime to date. Here's why:

Season 1: Its the only good part of Arc-V and the plot is interesting and the characters are mostly bearable except for one.(Looking at you Futoshi) And Yuzu is a strong female lead as well as the deadly antagonists. But the good ends here.

Season 2: Arc-V takes a massive fall in quality as characters are underused and there are bad pacing issues and filler. Also not helped is the antagonists were really bad this season. Not to mention Action Cards become more annoying as they mess up turbo duels and incorporate the Action Cards and replace Speed spells and counters. This season also basically copied and pasted the Fortune Cup arc. Also this season marks the annoying trend of Eago(Smile) philosophy that gets worse as the show goes on. The plot holes are also becoming more present.

Season 3:The absolute worse. This is the season that was the final nail in Arc-V's coffin. All the arcs are rushed and poorly executed, and by now anyone would be annoyed how much Yuya's actions card usage and Eago philosophy would make them hate the character. The Xyz arc is rushed, the Zarc arc was badly dragged out with no real stakes, and the epilogue was just cringe worthy filler. The characters are underused and underdeveloped and treated like trash and the ending was simply the worst. The plot holes are especially present here and Yuzu does not duel at all this season. All the other counterparts of Yuya and Yuzu become plot fodder and the potential is wasted in the end.

I think this review is long enough so I'll end it here. You're free to watch it if you want to but don't expect much. It could of been so much better if it wasn't poorly executed and I don't think I'll ever watch it again.

Best Yu-Gi-Oh! series by far. Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V was a pleasant surprise.

Warning: Spoilers
A lot of people have been ignoring the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime series. Most people say that the original was the best, and never even mention the other four.

Personally, I love all the Yu-Gi-Oh! series, except the original (yes, I even liked Zexal), but from the moment I saw Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V, I knew instantly it was the best by far.

All the different Yu-Gi-Oh! series had their own 'gimmick', so to speak. The original was the original (obviously) and focused on Egyptian themes. GX took things to a fictional prep school, 5D's focused on technology, and Zexal's theme was space and dimensions. As of right now Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V is very simple, it's theme based on entertainment (as of right now).

The story revolves around Yuya Sakaki, a 14 year-old boy attending You Show Duel School, who lives 'behind a mask of buffoonery' as his mother puts it. Three years ago, his father, Entertainment Duelist Yusho Sakaki, disappeared before a match against the famous Pro Duelist known simply as Strong Ishijima. This caused Yusho Sakaki to be constantly called a chicken, people thinking Yusho was too scared to show up, but he hasn't been seen since.

Yuya Sakaki dreams to be an entertainment duelist, just like his father, but he tends to have no self confidence, often making fun of his own father himself so others won't do it instead. However, one day, Strong Ishijima's manager comes to You Show Duel School to tell Yuya that Strong Ishijima remembers his challenge towards him 3 years ago, and an action duel is scheduled.

At the duel, Yuya manages to hold his own until Strong Ishijima pushes him into a corner, which causes Yuya to show off a never-before-seen summoning, Pendulum Summon! This causes a lot of attention toward Yuya and the You Show Duel School, as well as a lot of mystery behind the Pendulum Summon, because apparently Yuya blacked out before preforming the summon!

The show's characters are all interesting, there's a lot of questions to be answered, and I am personally hoping that it does well, because I'm enjoying it a lot. I can recommend it to anyone who used to enjoy the other Yu-Gi-Oh! anime series and people who wanted something new.

Best at what i does
audiobyte13 February 2016
So far I've been very satisfied with this series. It's much better than Zexal. As the first review had said, all the series' have had their own topics/gimmicks/themes. If anything, people need to get their heads out of Gen one and realize there are others out there. If anything, GX is my all time favorite. However, with Arc V, it focus' on the future of entertainment, focus' on the study, the different types of monsters, summoning's, and more. This series allows the players to ride the holograms they create (this was done way before this concept back in Jimmy Neutron with the holographic butler).

One of the biggest reasons I suggest this series over Zexal and most other's, is because this isn't trying to capture your attention. It's not trying to be good like all other shows with their try-hard gimmicks. This anime is by far more fun to watch. I feel like a kid again watching Yugioh like it was when it first came out.

However, as always, the VA in English is bad. So don't waste your time on it. I say this as I watch GX in English. I try all anime that has both Japanese and English VA to see which is better. Sometimes, both, sometimes only 1. If I say only 1, it's normally Japanese. I'm not an anime weeabo snob. I actually want good voice acting so I don't have to read subs all the time.

But, if you're unsure, just watch the first 10 eps, if you enjoy it, good for you, if not, bummer.

highs and lows
reredundant19 March 2019
This show was amazing for seasons 1 and 2, season 3 however was rotten they abruptly end the series by cramming 3 arcs into a season(all the shows get around 3 seasons) along with that one of the arcs had only 9 episodes iirc.the first 2 seasons were great because they explore this person who was interesting because he dueled for enjoyment and fun, along with that season 1 included agreeably one of the best fights in all of YGO with a plot twist and a suspenseful fight, its a shame they ruined this series
