The antithesis of the classic zombie movie
spikespiegelthend23 October 2023
Real delirium, Super Z is almost the antithesis of the classic zombie movie, deeply potash and delirious, I had completely missed this trash French UFO. After a nice and grotesque start on the creation of a family of talking zombies (at last babbling), the tone is quickly set. After a surreal presentation of this family recomposed for the occasion, it is with their flight that we discover the small life of these monsters not like the others while they settle in an abandoned house in the middle of nature.

My feeling is strange because somewhere I was quite disappointed that a subject as interesting as talking zombies is immediately turned to the practical joke, but curiously the quirky tone and consistent style works quite well with the universe set up, Kind of like a South Park live. We discover a lot of characters all more stupid than the others, but there is a zombie travelogue and a teenage rapper who are worth the detour. In the end I liked this family of monsters for what it is: Tight and endearing pariahs.

The film oscillates between the stupid and the homage, it is not always crazy, some characters lack development, it's a little soft in the middle while remaining quite enjoyable in the stupidity with some really crazy scenes like the pursuit in 2cv of war with the machine gun of Predator or the orgy based on soup LSD! I had a bit of trouble with their plan to conquer the world even if the final catch up well by blithely parodying the American action film and brings some consistency. It's quite funny that it came out the same year as Coupe! From Hazanavicius that I had loved. In itself I found the delirium infernal Z series crazy enough successful even if more finesse would not have hurt because there, it screams a lot and it makes the experience a little tiring at times, it's a pity because it's rather original and nice.

Somewhat of a very acquired taste...

Right, well I had not heard about this 2021 French horror comedy prior to getting to sit down to watch it. But seeing that it was a zombie-based horror comedy, then of course there was no doubt about me having to sit down and see what writers and directors Julien de Volte and Arnaud Tabarly had to offer.

The storyline was just a bit too silly for my liking, and thus I found very little enjoyment in watching "Super Z". Everything in the storyline was just taken a tad too far, and thus the movie's plot and concept were lost of me. I managed to endure about half of the movie before I gave up. By then I just couldn't take any more of the extreme silly and outrageous things that writers Arnaud Tabarly and Julien de Volte were throwing in my face on the screen.

I didn't particularly like the character gallery much, neither zombies nor living, so not even here was "Super Z" scoring any points.

I wasn't familiar with the cast ensemble in the movie, but then again I don't really watch a lot of French movies to really have a chance of being familiar with any actresses or actors in the French cinema. The acting performances in the movie were fair enough, taking into consideration the ludicrous storyline and the overly silly things that took place on the screen.

Something that definitely worked in favor of "Super Z" was the special effects and the amount of blood, gore and mayhem. And while I am a gorehound, then the storyline was just way past salvaging here, so the gore was hardly capable of doing much to keep the movie afloat.

This movie was a swing and a miss in terms of entertaining me. And there are far better zombie-based horror comedies out there, so I wouldn't recommend you waste your time, money or effort on "Super Z".

My rating of "Super Z" lands on a generous three out of ten stars.

A French burger with the taste of series Z
psychomantisx27 October 2023
French genre film productions are always a bit missed, I remember the latest "Ogre" that I often talked about as successful, personally I found that it was limit a disaster. In fact I find that when it tries to take it seriously it does not work, it lacks commitment (maybe finally be a glimmer of hope with the animal kingdom?). And now a friend brings me this American DVD on which there is a French Z-movie that is not available at home. So it's already whimsical, but then it was nothing compared to the movie.

Super Z is rather strange hamburger that makes you want on the box, and who wants to be square to put runs. In general my love story with fast food ends there. Yet here, I enjoyed the end even if it is necessary to hold certain phases to the raze of daisies, but well, it is a great series z as it is written in the title and the top, we do not contradict it. It's insane, cheap at times but extremely enjoyable and fun if you appreciate the genre. So yes it is not a great film but it is not so bad: There are unbearable sides in stupidity and formidable blow of brightness rather unexpected any proportion kept that said.

It is a French experience in the field and it is quite fresh, original and trash. I will not be able to advise everyone but personally I had a really good time because Super Z never really takes it seriously and the film is very generous in its stupidity (it is even a concentrate). For fans of the broken genre, it is a little unknown pearl.
