- The film begins with a fist fight in a bar, including minor bloody injury. This fight is broken up with greater violence but in less detail. A later fist fight leaves one character unconscious. Characters separately hold a pistol to their own heads, as if to end their lives.
- Fish are beheaded in preparation for cooking.
- Frequent discussion of deaths prior to the events in the film, including a woman and a child.

- The word 'bastard' is used at least twice, but strong language is far from frequent or regular. Two characters have a major difference of opinion over the existence and character of gods,

- Alcohol consumption to the point of inebriation, including as a precursor to violence and mental disorder. One character has a pipe which he puts to his mouth at least twice, but I didn't see him light it.
Frightening & Intense Scenes

- The theme of the film is the hardship caused by extended involuntary isolation in a remote location. The psychological impact on the two main characters is intensified by previous experiences of death - family members and work colleagues. Although very slow, the intensity is disturbing.

- A character dies violently but accidentally. His body is seen at various times, post mortem, causing anguish to another character and undergoing various indignities.
