Jane Austen's world perfectly brought to life
slabihoud19 April 2024
A real pleasure to watch and by far superior to the later version with Sally Hawkins. (Sally Hawkins was fine but the whole later production looks like a cartoon version compared with this elaborate rendering of Jane Austen's world.) Amanda Root as Anne Elliot is perfect as the underestimated and unloved daughter of a spendthrift snob of a father and a stepmother right out of Grimm's fairy tales. (Not to speak of being henpecked by her hyper nervous younger married sister.) They filmmakers also managed to make Amanda Root look rather unattractive at the beginning and one wonders how any man could have been so much in love with her as the still lamented Frederick Wenthworth, whom she sent away on the heavy influence of her family, because he was a nobody with no regular income at the time. Years have past when we comes back into her neighbourhood, apparently haunting her serenity and feeling her more wrong then ever before. Cairán Hinds is equally good as the former lover Wenthworth, still hurt and trying hard to ignore Anne and seemingly having a good time without her. Once Wentworth pops up every now and then we notice that Anne begins to look more pretty, even the presence of the man she thinks she has lost forever make her look so much better.

The beauty of this version is not only grounded on the excellent cast but also in the magnificent eye for details, and, although only running a mere 100 minutes, gives the viewer the appropriate feeling of time passing by very slowly (don't get me wrong, I don't speak of the pace inside the story), but time that painfully slows down when being with people you despise or you feel dispised by. I always cherished this book by Jane Austen very much and I'm so glad that finally I found this film that really does it justice!

The best Persuasion adaptation
BolletjeM9 June 2024
I am amazed that there are only a few reviews for this absolutely lovely rendering of Jane Austen's masterpiece 'Persuasion'. 1995 was a top year for Austen adaptations (Pride&Prejudice, Sense&Sensibility, Emma, Persuasion), and maybe the lesser known Persuasion was snowed under by the other movies and series. A sorry fact is that the DVD of this movie is hard to find and of poor quality. A pity because it's the best Persuasion adaptation I know. Much, much better than the 2007 version with Sally Hawkins (with the eternally open mouth...)..

The story is poignant and heart rendering. All the acting in this film is marvelous, and the interaction between the characters is completely natural. Amanda Root is perfect as Anne Elliot and Ciaran Hinds is a very convincing, robust Capt. Wentworth. A compliment for all the actors in supporting roles, in particular Sophie Thompson as Mary Musgrove, and John Woodvine and Fiona Shaw as Admiral and Mrs. Croft.

This film is a real gem. Get it and watch it!

Wonderful!

One of the best Jane Austen adaptions of all! Amanda Root as Anne starts the movie as the downtrodden heroine, but makes her way to an ending that suits her, not necessarily her family. Ciarán Hinds as Captain Wentworth is just terrific, you can see him changing and understanding what happened with Anne through each scene. The supporting cast is superb, and if you listen closely, the movie is exceedingly funny. This movie manages to capture what it seems it was truly like to live in this time period. The settings are absolutely gorgeous, as is the music. Finally, what seems to be a low-key ending is just right for this movie.

Confused by the acclaim
Cable_Engagement8 April 2024
I watched this the other day in a home DVD triple bill along with 1995 Pride & Prejudice and the Winslet/Thompson Sense & Sensibility. It was mentioned in lots of reviews as being the best Austen adaptation, along with Pride & Prejudice, we thought we'd give it a go. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. It is nothing like as good when compared to Pride & Prejudice or Sense & Sensibility. The plot is muddled, the acting wooden, the sound and camera are technically all over the place. The focus pulling is especially funny. Pride & Prejudice is 6 hours well spent, Persuasion is 2 hours wasted.
