Warning: Sportsmen especially Boxer fans Do Not Watch this film ever!
nanowenillai26 April 2014
Siva the hero Peter doesn't know boxing is a 'sport' and has no interest in sports or boxing even after reaching finals but he still wins championship without even practicing because he is in Love. I don't want to say anything else.

Maan Karate can be a humour film but its such a disrespect to boxing. Being a sportsman the film is more irritating than entertaining to me. How could it possibly happen? A Person who doesn't know what boxing is to reach finals? He goes to the finalist opponent and begs him to lose to him so that he will love Hansika! WORST SCENE EVER!!!! SO Stupid! How much love one would have had to win a championship? Just because the hero peter wants to screw hansika he wants the real Boxer to lose to him, the guy who doesn't know boxing! Please do not try to blow things by keeping LOVE as a medium my dear Kollywood directors. It's true that you want to show hero to be a funny guy, and to be a funny guy he should not be talented, but still why win Championship? THUMBS DOWN for maan karate even though i like Siva!

Another sports melodrama tamil film with less entertainment quotient
SivakumarBalachandran4 April 2014
Sivakarthikeyan's Maan karate has got nothing fresh in the story, romance, comedy and logic.

Plot: It is the usual repeated cliché of Tamil cinema where the hero takes up sport for love and without struggle he wins at last. Here it's an over rated and excess melodrama. The movie has mixed the plot concepts of Rajini's "Baba" and Ravi's "M.Kumaran" and some portions from "Ethir neechal". At last giving as a mixed cinema which fails to engage or entertain. The comedy crackers what we expect from Siva was less in this movie. Towards the end it was dragging and boring.

Cast: Siva as Peter has failed to meet his current over-hyped status and makes us feel like he was better in VPVS, Ethir Neechal and Marina. Hansika Motwani as Yazhini who has considerably lost weight and comes with her new looks as a doll and nothing much to act. The chemistry did not seem to be working as well. Other cast which includes Sathish and his friends were used in the story track considerably. Soori and Shayaji shinde were not used properly and were unnecessary inclusions. Vamsi Krishna as the usual opposite villain boxer looses the match after his years of practice to his opponent who does not even know boxing is sports. Overall it is a below average Rom-Com flick. Watch it if you are die hard Siva fan miss it otherwise.

Illogical K. O
yousuf-854711 February 2020
First the movie started with the fun and it was good till the twist for interval. After interval the director had taken the match without logics and finally Peter had won the final because of his love Positives- Due to SK the movie was so entertaining and fun Negatives- rather than SK everything was such a holy crap This movie cannot be seen by the boxing lovers but due to SK it was somehow watchable For SK:8/10 For the crap storyline :5/10 Totally 6/10

MAAN KARATE - K.O and disqualified slap-sticks
fredberglyle7 May 2014
Well what can I say about this brainless script. It would be a cross to bear for the boxing fans/ white collar boxers. I, being a huge fan of Rocky series and of course Raging Bull could not get through the boxing sequences in this movie (eg.. there ain't one good contender for the palooka-protagonist in a boxing tournament). Also there was a heavy inspiration of Chaplin's Boxer movie, yet was not up to the mark.

I must admit that there is still a fair quantity of humor in the script especially in the first half which I did laugh out loud. The comedy at the boxing tournament were also laughable but I felt like the director made the whole tournament as a joke and so the Indian Boxing club. The Climax was horrible with nasty sentiments that totally knocked out the good essence.

My verdict : If you are a classy movie viewer than stone-wall the movie at all costs. If you wanna just have some laughs the n watch it (Don't analyze anything) If you are a school kid and a huge-fan of the actor, you may love it

Do Maan Karate and escape from the movie ! Literally !!!
nishantmay8 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Thirukumaran's Maan Karate is a total disaster .There is nothing new in this film .The same old hero fights for heroine and finally wins the tournament and joins with heroine. Siva Karthikeyan is really bad .His acting won't even convince us. Is he thinking that he is the next superstar so that we will accept anything he does. Hansika is ravishing but she is also awful. The cinematography is great and the BGM and songs are really good Hats off to Anirudh. Vamsi Krishna is not even acting and tries everything that he is a villain but even though he looks like a boxer . What bugs me till now is Siva Karthikeyan on the other hand doesn't even know what boxing is but wins with just an hour's training . I can't believe I paid for this movie and wasted 2 hours .Please ARM don't think us as a fool . We are not in the 80's .Please don't waste your time and money watching this god-awful movie .Use Maan Karate and run away .The reason I am giving this movie 1 star is I can't give less than that . I want to give this movie 0 star .

Please make some logic noise, we are not in 1980's

Story - How a funny youth turns a professional boxer.

Positives: Some comedy by Siva Karthikeyan, Colorful visual, decent songs by Anirudh, Release under big banner.

Negatives: Except these few +ve all other seems to be huge -ve.

Hansika used only for songs. Soori special appearance doesn't make any sense. Writers tried jump from Fantasy to Sports drama. But story can't withstand all this genre. If this type of movie released before 30yrs, definitely MK would make some good business. Even now this movie made a good opening because of the big banner and not for movie quality.

If I know something about boxing then I could rate only 1 out of 10 star.

Bottom-line: Please make some logic noise, we are not in 1980's.

Pathetic package of Comedy
aji4u4ever5 May 2014
Maan Karate is one of the worst movies that i have seen in recent times. Thanks for the DVD, otherwise i would have died in the theater.

Maan Karate is a story of care free guy who doesn't know about Boxing (what a pity, he didn't even heard of boxing) becomes a boxer to get his lover.

This movie is around 3 hours of hell. The acting, story, screenplay everything is dud in the movie. I still didn't understand that how it stormed the box office.

Siva Karthikeyan as usual do his style of carefree guy who roams in town. He has to change this kind of selection (if he seriously thinks about the acting), otherwise in a couple of years he will be out of the industry. He did somewhat justice to the role, but in some scenes he was too irritating.

Hansika Motwani: She once again proved that acting is not her field. She is irritating from the introduction scene to the end.. She was really testing my patience. I don't know why she is getting so many movies despite of her poor acting skills and extremely poor dancing skills..

Anirudh's songs were enjoyable but was actually speed breakers. I think the director used the songs to complete the 150 mins duration. Anirudh's background score was the major highlight of the movie. Songs picturization of the movie was also good in the movie.

This is thirukumaran's failed attempt as a director.

I would rate 1 on 5.

Verdict: Poor show

Downright pathetic - avoid at all cost
quasar-654543 January 2018
If I could only give minus stars.

Absolute mockery of boxing. A man with those legs, with that build will be dead meat before the first round. I know it is supposed to be a brain dead movie, I mean so-called comedy movie, but still ending with the hero winning the tournament is just too much.

Except for 1 or 2 places where you get a bit of laughs there is not much rib tickling comedy either.

Siva Karthikeyan's antics don't bring out any laughs at all, at least not for me.

You will only love\like this if you are a school kid, a deadbeat Siva fan or a grown up numb nut

Maan Karate (Tamil) (U) -------------- my Rating : ★★★★ COMMERCIAL ENTERTAINER

STRENGTHS :- * Comedy performances.... * Casting and performances were great for an entertaining movie... * Story was thrilling with twist n turns ..... * Screenplay and Direction was superb by the debut-ant.... * Anirudh's BGM was rocking ...especially in climax

WEAKNESSES :- * Songs were not enjoyable .....

FINAL VERDICT :- * Overall... the movie is a complete family entertainer ... MUST WATCH

The film was named after a dialogue spoken by Dhamu in Gemini (2002),where he explains that Maan Karate means nothing more than how a deer runs away when in danger. The film has been titled so because whenever there is a problem in his life, the hero Sivakarthikeyan fails to face them and runs for cover instead.

overall good
asishonline00525 May 2014
i don't think it is a boxing or sports promotional film. peter and his funny movements in boxing was so funny. he shows mann karate ( run for save life) to all of them. i watched some portions of the film again and again. it's worth of watching. haters , f*** you!!!! . but it is not fare because in this film Peter learns karate in last night before the game!!! that was F****** unbelievable. and the climax is similar to M kumaran Son of Mahalakshmi !!!. it's songs are good and the performance of Anirudh was good in the song "open the tasmac". overall it is a good entertainer to watch and worh of money.

Storyline Four IT professionals who are on an outdoor trip meet a hermit inside a jungle, who predicts the future by giving them a leading Tamil newspaper which is going to be printed four months later. Going by the news in the daily, they track down Peter (Siva Karthikeyan) a normal middle-class guy who is supposed to win Rs 20 million in the Tamilnadu boxing championship after four months and sign an agreement. Peter who doesn't know anything about boxing is sponsored by these people who train him for the match. Meanwhile, Peter meets Yazhini (Hansika) in a mall and it is instant love for him and in lighting speed she reciprocates. Finally, Peter has to defeat the menacing Killer Peter(Vamsi) in the finals.

A fortune teller reveals that Peter will win a boxing match
iamvjyay3 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
After notching up back to back successes as the endearing and funny 'boy next door', Siva Karthikeyan is back with Maan Karate in a role which is akin to his previous ones but with more scope for action this time around.

Siva plays Peter, a playful chap with very little worldly exposure and with nothing on his mind except his girlfriend Yazhini. He poses as a boxer to woo her, as she is an ardent fan of sports. But destiny has bigger plans for him and makes him register for a boxing tourney.

Maan Karate combines elements like fantasy and the regular brand of commercial entertainment in true Siva Karthikeyan style. We also have the sporting angle with Siva being the quintessential underdog taking on a mighty champion. The film does provide quite a lot of fun in the first half with Siva Karthikeyan's typical antics, his mimicry attempts and his rollicking dance moves in the colorfully shot song sequences. The young man looks handsome in neatly fitting, trendy costumes and accessories, and looks the part as a dashing lead hero. The way he has improved his dance moves is unbelievable and there is an evident and effortless grace in his moves now. All the songs are lifted by Siva's energetic presence. And like a typical mass hero number, we have Siva and the song's choreographer dancing together to a signature move, in the 'Royapuram Peter' track.

Hansika is pretty and cherubic as ever and looks gorgeous in the song and dance sequences. Other than that, she gets to be a loyal, unsuspecting and supporting girlfriend who stands by her guy.

Soori plays a pretty hyper, easily excitable boxing referee and will please his hardcore fans in the limited time he has. The chemistry between Siva and Soori is evident in these scenes and they do bring about a few laughs. Sathish has a few one-liners to make a mark and effortlessly does so.

The other actors such as Vamsi as the domineering boxer and Shaji as Siva's coach play out their roles in the required manner.

Technically, Maan Karate is a superior product with the grand boxing arena and the massive scale in the final fight, catching the eye. The songs are a delight to watch thanks to Sukumar's lighting, the glossy visual treatment and the lead pair's attractive costumes. 'Maanja' and 'Un Vizhigalil' are the best of the lot but the movie is let down by the placement of these songs as you can preempt exactly when all the songs are going to arrive.

Sukumar's work is also really brilliant in the movie's initial few minutes as he transports us right into the proceedings on screen.

Now coming to the biggest highlight of the movie, Anirudh and his spellbinding work on the BGM score. The final boxing tussle is elevated several notches by Anirudh's quirky and groovy electronic score. The little training montage is another sequence where Anirudh rules with his orchestration in the background. You have many more scenes which have Anirudh's lovely tracks in the background. Each of his songs is welcomed with the whistles and hoots of fans. Maan Karate is another step in the right direction for this talented young musician.

All things said, we aren't able to root wholeheartedly for the underdog in the final boxing tussle, and we don't make an emotional connect with him. The unconvincing way in which the boxing tournament is staged in the movie, may be a reason. Even with a funny title like 'Maan Karate' (meaning pulling off an escape act), when you are making a movie with sports as a key element, a certain amount of seriousness is required in the way the sport is approached and treated on screen. The movie also becomes overtly dramatic towards the end and this reduces the final impact.

On the whole, the movie is definitely watchable, with some amount of suspension of disbelief, for the many segments of entertainment that it offers. Verdict: Siva Karthikeyan's entertainer to beat the summer heat
