Mixed bag

Having Gwyneth Paltrow on Ahs was an absolutely awesome addition to this episode. However this episode itself was a tiny bit of a mess a fun chaotic funny mess but still a mess. Shades of season 1 and 2s messy writing rears it's ugly head but there are moments throughout the episode that are strong enough to still make this a good entry into American horror stories. Using lockdown for a different disease wasn't a choice I would personally make it takes me out of the episode especially when the disease is low-key bird box light but it's fine the disease wasn't really overly used. The characters are likeable but the story kinda lacks and actual horror moment, the only scary part of the episode was an accidental death.

Daphne

Warning: Spoilers
This was clearly the best American Horror Stories episode of Season 3 and one of the best period.

Not a wholly original concept, an AI tech device ends up being a little too powerful, but they had the juxtaposition of the COVID pandemic and then a new one, to use as a good backdrop.

They also gave us a good ending whether we legitimately guessed whether he was a bad guy the whole time or the device was real.

It was entertaining, it had some of the signature Ryan Murphy comedy thrown in and overall it was enjoyable. A little bit long runtime, but there's nothing new on that front. That is TV these days.

Interesting take.

I like how it takes the whole watch out for AI becoming human and takes it a step further. It was a tad predictable but I didn't care i liked the idea of it. I liked the cast, the production, the writing, the story. The quality of the series is alive and well. I watched the crypt keeper in the 90's, the twilight zone in the 80's and nothing beats this series.

Creepy, funny and relevant MY FAVORITE! There were a few things It could have done that would have made it better but I have to say it is a solid seven! Especially with the birth of AI chat. An American Horror story twist on the movie her! Well done!

More Black Mirror than AHS
sanjkn-595-1512094 February 2024
Interesting concept but not an original. It's an adaption of the film 'Her' crossing across the concept and world of black mirror.

Frightening to see what AI could actually do for us too.

The play on the pandemic and subsequent lockdown suggests that our reliance on smart devices for interaction is all to easy to fall into.

Generally well acted out and the realism of all smart devices obtaining and sharing data on us is far too real.

Definitely one of the better episodes of this spin off series from AHS. Couldn't imagine a whole season on this given they captured it all in one episode.

Definitely worth a watch.

Poor imitation of "Her"
ossie8529 October 2023
"Her" is one of my favourite films which this episode clearly took inspirational from. "Black Mirror" also routinely does this techno-horror thing frequently.

Happy for different versions of existing products, but this didn't really add anything unique to this particular premise. Also, AI is moving so fast that none of this seemed particularly shocking.

Reid Scott does what he can, but the plot was pretty predictable and the conclusion rushed and unsatisfying.

The scares were pretty light also. The main character wasn't particularly likeable, and my investment in him was minimal.

And RIP Manny Coto.

Predictable, cliched and boring
jarose030128 October 2023
This story has been done to death at this point. The dangers of the evolution of technology. While it's on point with the current issues surrounding AI, that alone cannot compensate for the overly-cliched plot. Adding in isolation, echoes of the pandemic, and romantic loneliness, does nothing to create any real interest or intrigue. While American Horror Stories has been a mixed bag (personal favorite: 'Aura,' least favorite: 'Milkmaids'), this travesty is right down at the bottom rung of the ladder for me. So far, it is the first episode in three seasons that was so boring and uninspired, I found myself pulling out my phone to do other things. Too on the nose. Predictable. Cliched. Extremely boring from start to finish. Couldn't care less that Gwyneth Paltrow was the voice of the virtual assistant. It made no difference whatsoever.

Didsn't I see a Twilight Zone episode like this?
Gislef5 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Oh, right, 'From Agnes, With Love'. Granted, Reid Scott is better-looking than Wally Cox. And there's some psuedo-nudity and sex. If that trips your trigger... Otherwise, save yourself 30 minutes and watch that drivel instead of this drivel. You can at least see Bernard Schoenfield and Rod Serling make the best of it (it was a fifth season episode) instead of this modern-day updating of it, with a gratuitous pandemic and lockdown thrown in as well as the elements mentioned above. Or unless you wanted to see the late work of Manny Coto, who has done far better work both on AHS and elsewhere, than here.

My other issue is... it's not American, and it's not horror. It's horrible, but that's not the same thing. It's lukewarm Black Mirror, but Charlie Booker would be turning over in his grave if he was dead. Why someone thought high-tech horror with no supernatural element had a place in AHS, I have no idea.

"Simpsons did it"..... Kinda
toddlloyd9130 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I got a whole The Simpsons treehouse of horror/black mirror (I know everyone else is saying this) vibe where the AI falls for one of the household.

What would of made sense for this too be "Horror" and not a cheap M. Night twist was he spend all his money making Daphne a real body and then she framed him for all the crimes rather than... "It was him all along/was it him all along?" ending.

If the AI did frame him, it's obvious from the moment she can mimic his voice and do phone calls for him what the ending was going to be.

Also, don't have sex in front of an Emotional AI that will clearly make it jealous... just to have sex of the AR version (lol couldn't afford Gwyneth's likeness or she was only available for the voice job)

Plus a virus that makes you blind? Come on. This is 2023. Be abit more creative then that.
