Horror or Extreme Drama?
gavin694210 March 2017
According to the prosecution, on the morning of October 31, 1981, Johnny Frank Garrett raped, strangled, and killed 76-year-old Sister Tadea Benz in the St. Francis Convent of Amarillo, Texas. This film asks: what if he was innocent, and what is he was able to affect his accusers from beyond the grave?

The concept behind this film is an interesting one. The case is real, and was the subject of a documentary from director Jesse Quackenbush. What the writers did here was take the documentary as inspiration and a jumping-off point, and in the process gave the ghost of Garrett a voice.

For genre fans, the first thing that will be obvious is the inclusion of a few choice names. We have an ambitious district attorney played by Sean Patrick Flanery (Boondock Saints). We have director Simon Rumley, who shocked viewers with "P is for Pressure". Perhaps most interesting, though, is the composer: Simon Boswell, a prolific musician who got his start with movies thanks to Dario Argento.

Rumley came on board with the script already written, but he was a wise choice if the producers wanted someone to put their own stamp on the material. Rumley prefers to see his work as "extreme drama" rather than horror, and this project gives him plenty of opportunity for social commentary: the Texas death penalty, a miscarriage of justice, strong religious overtones… there is a message under the veneer of a revenge story.

Some critics have complained of "schlocky, bad acting", and Curt McCarl specifically said it's "shameful that an opportunity to tell an honest story was wasted on this schlock." Yes, multiple reviews have used the word schlock. And, sure, some of the acting is a bit over-the-top. But the film has a style all its own and some practical touches (including the lethal injection needle and the teacher's makeup) that should be applauded for their authenticity. Even the effort to get 90s-era computers and whatnot was probably no small task.

"Last Word" is not going to be the must-see horror film of 2017, but it certainly has its merits and is worth a look. If nothing else, it might bring increased attention to the documentary and original court case. And with Simon Rumley being a rising star, it never hurts to get acquainted with his work now (if you haven't already).

Johnny Frank Garrett's Last Word: Confusing but semi-competent
Platypuschow7 July 2017
Johnny Frank Garret raped and killed a nun and is put to death for his heinous crime then returns to exact revenge upon those responsible and their families.

Hardly an original concept, in fact we've pretty much seen the same thing several times over and done considerably better.

So what makes this stand out? Decent performances but lesser known actors, and that deep south old time religion vibe which is scary in itself.

I couldn't decide if this film had anti or pro religious messages but regardless was certainly a prominent theme.

Johnny Frank Garrett looks a lot like Charles Manson. You know Charles Manson? That guy everyone refers to as one of the worlds most famous serial killers even though he didn't actually kill a single person. Seriously, look it up. We live in a glorious age where information is readily available at our fingertips yet people still think that Manson was a killer, that the earth is flat and that pineapple isn't allowed on pizza! The biggest flaw of JFGLW is that its all so confusing, as with many movies of this genre the "Being(s)" don't follow any natural rules so it all gets a bit weird as the creators as making stuff up as they go along. Like Doctor Who when he and he comrades were in space aboard a ship and there was a bad guy in with them so they shot the windscreen out and he got sucked out into deepspace. Did nobody writing that see a problem there? Unoriginal concept, sketchy creation, pretty poor but saved due to a decent cast.

The dying lips of an innocent man
nogodnomasters23 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The film is based on the true story of Johnny Frank Garrett (Devin Bonnée) who was convicted of the murder and rape of a 76 year old nun Sister Tadea Benz (Rebekah Turner). Garrett maintained he was innocent up to his death and cursed those who convicted him. After the state of Texas executed this mentally handicapped man, the people connected to his conviction began to die. The story follows one of the jurors, Adam Redman (Mike Doyle) who has figured out what is going on and works to clear Johnny's name.

The film is an extension of research done in the case. It speculates Garrett was innocent and how an innocent man could get convicted in the fine criminal justice system in the state of Texas. My guess, the super natural aspect was an add on.

At the end of the film is a list of people who died connected to the conviction...reminding me of that JFK assassination list. They also play a tape of his last words. Acting wasn't that great. Too much truth in the story to make a decent horror. Adapted from the documentary "The Last Word." Guide: Got one tapering phrase that could have a WTF. No sex or nudity.

Frustrating.
twanster-976553 May 2020
The premise is good. A man wrongly sentenced to die for a crime he didn't commit, comes back for revenge.. The trailer looked promising, unfortunately if you have watched the trailer then there's no reason to watch the film.. Its very long winded, nothing really happens for along time, its almost as if they just said "that'll do". It tries to be complicated but it isn't. Tho the movie drags on, the music is annoying, the cast are good but their accents change thru out the film and that's annoying.. I give 3 starts because the first half hour is good, after that tho it all becomes very boring. Its not a film I'd watch again. A real waste of what could have been a good horror script.

Kind of terrible.
oneeyedfiona28 April 2019
Being from the area where this murder and subsequent execution happened, I've always been pretty interested in the story. There is enough doubt in the outcome of the case to make a movie that would be really fascinating. This one isn't.

I get it, they attempted to make a horror movie. Instead, they made a confusing movie that wasn't all that scary. I think I would have been less irritated had they not tried to link it to an actual murder. What is actually scary about the Johnny Frank Garrett story is the possibility an innocent man was executed and that it could happen to anyone. There's a documentary out there by a local lawyer, though it's somewhat slanted, it is pretty informative.

There were a couple of good actors in this film and I think they did their best with the content provided. Sadly, there just wasn't much there to work with.

Definitely deserves a higher rating.
deloudelouvain13 February 2020
I have sincerely no clue what other reviewers thought that was confusing about this movie. I just don't get it. To me Johnny Frank Garrett's Last Word was much better than what I expected from a movie with a title like that. Simon Rumley did a great job directing this interesting story, the cinematography was spot on, made it all look very professional for a low budget movie. The way it was shot is better than most of the movies in this genre, the sound effects fitted perfectly to create an evil ambiance. The horror parts were certainly good enough to keep any horror fan watching it till the end. The acting wasn't bad either so to me this movie deserves a much higher rating than it actually gets. A good surprise for me.

Campfire Tale
kay_rock14 May 2019
This is a campfire ghost story with delusions of being a film. Even the line of text we are given in the end has the feeling of "hanging from the door handle was a BLOODY HOOK!"

The choices in color saturation felt contrived. The filmmaker might as well have put captions in "this is a hallucination... this part is supposed to be scary." There were some odd, amateurish editing choices (such as phone calls where the view jumped back and forth between the main character and a side character, such as a secretary we will never see again, when a voice heard on the other end of the line would have been less distracting and just as useful). Most of the characters manage to be both overwrought and entirely two-dimensional. Many of them were just thrown in oddly for no apparent purpose other than to beef up the time.

Basically, as I said, it's a campfire tale. Someone tried to flesh it out enough to fill the time required for a movie, but most of it was not only unnecessary, it was distracting.

Ultimately, the question for this film isn't whether it was good or bad, but "why?"

Getting a word in
kosmasp16 April 2017
This movie had it tough from the start. For those who have seen "Red White and Blue": well they had high expectations. Or different kind of expectations. This movie does not meet them. It is very weird and tough to describe. You have Sean Patrick Flannery in it and he's almost not recognizable through all the make-up he's wearing (face blown up sort of, as in prosthetic).

But he's not the main character in this strange mix of horror, drama and fantasy. There are some very well shot, but very unnerving scenes, that you'll either like for being different or hate for that exact fact. I don't recommend watching a trailer often, but in this case it does make sense to get a feeling and will help you either save time or watch something you otherwise would have missed

Misses its Mark and Very Confusing
dcarsonhagy19 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I have found out much about this film and its backstory simply by reading a few other reviews. I want to thank these reviewers for pointing out what I would have never known.

Firstly, I did not know this film was based on actual events. I believe the murder took place in 1981. The bare-bones facts were also pretty much in tact: the murderer raped and then stabbed a nun to death. Johnny Garrett was only 17 at the time of this murder, which I don't think makes any difference in Texas. He was convicted and sentenced to death. Here is where things got just a little too squirrelly for me.

It seems there was one juror who did not think the man was guilty. Instead of holding out for a "hung jury," he decides to cast the dye and sentence Johnny to death. Why? Was it because he was just worn down by the other 11 jurors? The entire trial process seemed "rushed." I never heard one single objection from the defendant's attorney.

Flash forward 10 years. While Johnny is awaiting his execution by lethal injection, he pens a cursed letter letting everyone know he will "come back to haunt them, their families, and their families' families." I believe he was just a little ticked! And, as promised, after his death, certain people begin to die.

I thought the director and writer completely missed their marks here. What was supposed to be a tale of vengeance, turns into a big mixed bag of nothing and left me asking lots of questions, i.e. if Johnny was after vengeance, why wasn't the crooked district attorney the first person he went after? Confusion reigned.

Rated "R" for language and violence. Not that bad, but not good enough to recommend.

Decent film for what I assume a lower budget
po-34418 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I liked the story and yes, I don't know the history behind it so I just went with it.

I am still going through it, the issue I have is some of the minor actors.

I think the lead actors are strong, but the other ones are just bad. Like in the jury room.

Like they grabbed a bunch of extras from holding and gave them lines.

Good for the actors bad for the film.

Here is where I think they could have done better.

From the acting to directing to the editing to the writing- all absolutely terrible. I think a high school class could have made a better movie. Don't waste your time.

Exciting and scary thriller!
mdeacon9514 March 2017
Very good and exciting thriller/horror film by director Simon Rumley. I was a fan of "Fashionista", which he last directed, and so naturally I was inclined to like this as well. Fans of horror will like this movie as it is a good movie to watch with a group of friends or a date. I really recommend watching this for those who like films like this.

Effective Low-Budget Psychological Horror Film
chrischurilla27 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this movie because I am looking to write a horror movie of my own and I must say I was rather impressed with it. This film focuses on one juror from the trial and his efforts to find the truth when weird things start happening shortly after the execution of the title character. I was surprised to learn this was an actual case, because I am not usually a fan of such movies because I know the makers are going to take artistic liberties with the truth.

What made this movie work for me was the scares. Now given this is a low-budget film made with virtual unknowns -- besides Sean Patrick Flanery -- that meant the scares were few and far between, but they were highly effective, unsettling me quite a bit. What I liked even more is the film did not rely on jump scares or excessive gore; again, due to the limited budget, the gore was minimal yet effectively used.

I won't say this has changed my mind about movies based on true events, but I will say this was an exception.

A Thought Provoking, but Over Wrought, What-If Horror / Thriller
lee-9669624 July 2023
The movie is based on a true story. A nun was raped, beaten, and murdered in her convent bedroom in Amarillo, Texas, on Halloween night 1981. The police arrested Johnny Frank Garrett, a developmentally challenged (possibly) 17-year old. Johnny maintained his innocence throughout but was found guilty and sentenced to death. The trial was a quickie featuring a corrupt D. A., inept defense counsel, a psychic, suppressed evidence, and an impatient jury all too eager to get home for dinner or maybe to church for a prayer meeting.

On the night of his execution ten years later -- he now looks like Charles Manson -- he scribbles out a florid, over-the-top letter damning the people and their families who helped send him to his demise, putting a curse on them and their future generations.

And here's where the what-if starts. What if his spirit or whatever possessed him came back for actual vengeance?

The filmmakers have the answer. They start by killing a few of those on Johnny's "cursed list." First his grade school teacher and a character witness in the trial - apprently not very helpful to his case - commits suicide in front of her elementary school students using pencils, of all things.

An 80-year old "church lady" juror tumbles down a flight of stairs in the dark. The husband of a psychic involved in the trial is killed in a suicide car crash.

One of the jurors, loving father and husband Adam Redman (hunkish Mike Doyle) engages in some dot-connecting and takes it upon himself to break the curse when his son is suddenly struck with nightmares, seizures, and a life-threatening heart ailment with just days to live. Adam, you see, was the lone holdout for not guilty, but quickly, weakly folded under pressure from the other eleven jurors.

The violence and creepiness escalate as Adam tracks down another possible suspect and confronts the cartoonishly evil district attorney Danny Hill (Sean Patrick Flannery).

The movie throws off a heavy handed Texas Gothic vibe. The flashback scenes are done in a vague sepia tone. The jury looks like something out of rural Texas 1950. Some of the homes and buildings look dated and cluttered. Kudos to Shreveport, Louisiana for serving as a spooky stand in for Amarillo. Cult classic Carnival of Souls also gets a mention in a seedy motel room segment.

To be sure, the acting is often over-wrought. The psychic, played by Sue Rock, is especially outlandish. The D. A., who has an oddly Deep South, not West Texas accent, is deliciously, comically malevolent. The teacher is in - what is the clinical term? - stage five cray-cray.

But the real problem which prevents this from being better than a 6-rated film, is Johnny, played by Devin Bonnée. If he is cursing people, yet is apparently a good soul since he did not murder the nun, why not start by offing the D. A. and a few of the police? Why go after some old lady juror who was just acting on the evidence presented? Or the little boy who had no direct connection to the trial, who was not even born? And if he has such beyond-the-grave superpowers, why not out the actual killer?

So, it's entertaining in a mindless sort of way. I saw it on a bad-weather Saturday night. Good stay-at-home viewing for when you want to just zone out and not think very much.

Great American Gothic Horror by Simon Rumley
aratron-003913 August 2022
Creepy, feeling of dread through out the film that keeps the viewer watching. Simon Rumley is an excellent director I have seen most of his films and love them. The low rating is not warranted and is likely from individuals who enjoy movies starring the Rock or other popcorn fluff movies. Good writing and direction , all cast members do a fine job. I hope to see more from Mr. Rumley.. I encourage you to check out his Red White & Blue, Fashionista, The living and the dead. All well made films about the dark underbelly.. this film certainly deserves a higher rating.

More drama thriller but ok
coreytegley24 February 2022
Look its not the best movie. It not really horror I would say. It has some in it but more drama thriller. I liked the overall story the acting was fine just could have been done better. They should of added more stuff and took some unnecessary scenes out. But still worth a watch if u need to kill some time.

Not what I expected, which is great
vmalast15 May 2019
I thought this was going to be the typical revenge from beyond the grave flick. I was wrong. This was a pleasant surprise. "Based" on factual events stories are usually horrible and full of cliches. This could almost pass as believable. the story telling, acting, script, directing was above average. definitely not your typical slasher type flick. The only problem I had was with the colouring of the film. Other than that, I'd highly recommend.
