An English movie
alaninjasmin6 August 2023
This should have been an English movie. Just 10 minutes in to the movie, the actor is having a verbal diarrhea if english words over the phone which I believe noone can understand. From there onwards the plot goes south.

The acting of Deepa Thomas is sub par considering she is the one who carries the film. The dialogues between her and the actor is 70% in english which noone can understand. I have no idea who has written this english script for a malayalam movie. The director should consider making movie with actors speaking in malayalam. Idea seems to be good, but subpar cast and acting is a nightmare for viewers. Overall a waste movie.

Deepa Thomas (Chechi/Dhivya) Aces it...

Warning: Spoilers
First things, first... a good attempt by the director.

However, the story could have been neatly executed in a 15-20 min short film. The first half dragged on and on, with a bunch of repetitive shots. Of course the director tried to justify it as rote during the lockdown days. But still, it is one thing to tell a story and another to choke it down and provide some justifications.

Also, the movie story line had some major inherent flaws. The brother's reaction post the accident is unbelievable. Atleast there could have been a shock/grieving/panic period or some segway before he gets helps to fix the accident.

The black/white filmography didnt quite gel with me. What was the purpose? Because Chechi was right there with us, and we all get it. After the first few minutes, i thought there was a problem with my TV!! And then lo and behold, it turned off.. oh my god, that was so childish.

Casting! The kids live in chennai, and speak nice to perfect malayalam. Yet the mom!! Her malayalam is filled with the typical tamil accent. How did the kids then learn such good malayalam? If Geetha (Mom) was going to come on video call, there were other people that could have been casted, or even fixed it via dubbing.

Overall a decent effort. A better handling of the second half, would have made for a better or even great movie.

Hats of to Deepa Thomas, she aced with her performance. Arjun, Pushpa, Aditi and watchman did a decent job. Others in the movie require more coaching.

All the best!

Quirky & Mad
anitanandini5 August 2023
This was an out of the box fun movie. The typical banter and fighting that one would have witnessed or gone through with their sibling, music references, movie references etc struck a chord in me. Its probably not a run of the mill movie in that sense. The second half was rather interesting, and took on a mad caper meets a semi film noir feel. The brother and sister duo have done an interesting job and their chemistry is good fun.

The movie could have been much shorter in duration with some pieces scenes not adding anything to the story.

I also very much liked the little tyke Anjali who knows how to hustle for chocolate !

The music is also interesting. And its nice how the entire movie is pretty much shot in the house but doesnt get visually boring.

A relatable story! :@

Warning: Spoilers
Thoroughly enjoyed the film.

Felt the story is relatable to how i underwent the lockdown. The instances od Arjun and Dhivya took me back to the everyday humdrum and boredom that was 2020&21. How so much was happening putside but we were trying to keep sane inside with family and friends...Also it is simple and not over the top like most current movies, which is breath of fresh air.

One of my favorite parts is the 'Neram Kaalam' song, the music and lyrics qre great. The slow-burn makes you restless in a way the lockdown did and you can feel that more when you watch Arjun.👀 Also points for a sibling story, we have so few in the genre.

Deepa Thomas was fantastic..🙌 For me the movie is a 10/10.

Lighthearted and fun.

Warning: Spoilers
I think the most striking part of film was the performance of the female lead, Divya (the sister). I don't think I would even call it acting, She embraced the character and became the part she set out to play. She casually breezed through it without a struggle. There were no contradictions to the role.

Having said that, abhimanyu (the brother) was no less impressive. He is the epitome of everything a 20 something is today; entitled, very uninterested and sails through life without accountability. This guy nailed it.

For a film to be 90% dialogue between two people set in a confined space, it has to be interesting in narration, portrayal, plot and visualisation. I think the film has it all. It does drag a bit post her "death" but beyond that, great DOP, lovely watch!

A new genre?
gopalms-380-7742027 August 2023
Until now I have only seen Malayalam movies that are made by people in kerala making movies set in other places. Considering there is now a big diaspora of Malayalis who speak a 'fraud' version of the language (to use an Orkut age description) and film makers who are second or third generation out of kerala, is this a kind of movie made by them, for them? And what better than an pandemic age movie to herald this new genre or type of moves and film makers. Not sure how people rooted in Kerala will view this film. Overall an interesting take on those days everyone wants to forget - the pandemic.

A twisty tale
ramaek-848515 August 2023
The first 30 to 40 minutes - pretty much relatable. That kind of left me wondering where this was all heading to.

Then I recalled the trailer had hinted a twist. Was waiting for that. Having formed my view about the characters, had already built my story. But then, it was not to be. My story fell apart and what transpired..... I will leave it at that. 🤐

The siblings excel in the first half and then Deepa comes alive and takes the movie a notch above, ably supported by Abhi, who is pretty much himself.

Every character has played their role as someone we can relate to, without any melodrama.

'My cuckoo mind' keeps playing in one's head.

A heady and enjoyable cocktail of some real conversations and a surreal plot
vishymj5 August 2023
There is always something innocent, charming and at the same time a competitive undercurrent running when two siblings banter. The film captures the all of these in equal measure when two siblings - Arjun and Deepa are forced to spend time together during the pandemic lockdown

NIEC (Nyan Ippo Enta Cheyya) is A film that draws audiences in with its mosaic of conversations that swing between the abstract, the existential and the mundane. Characters, and their idiosyncrasies get etched with these conversations (you even start following the characters that don't have any screen time!)

But as the conversations flow.. a surreal story also starts unfolding. One that bubbles up the insecurities and survival instinct.

But, All ends well as the siblings come through it unscathed.. learning a larger life lesson that would bond them closer and maybe even joust more..
