Surprisingly Good
nightringer-768404 May 2023
AKA is a TV Movie, WTH???

Hollywood should take notes and learn a lot from this film. This is a low budget so the special effect is basic. The fight choreography is very simple but excellently executed, but I'll elaborate further in the next paragraph. Soundtrack didn't ruin the film.

The fight or action scene was surprisingly old school and excellently timed. The best things about the fight scenes are how effective and good the timings and movements were well planned and make sense as if it was directed by a martial artist coach for a marine or army.

The actors act good, the main character is a bit too stoic but he was supposed to have an air of mystery. And then the direction of the director was very enjoyable. Almost like music video but with a specific street wise style.

And in conclusion, this is one of the most enjoyable low budgeted action movie. The storyline might not win any award, but if you're looking for a good entertaining action movie, you'll like this.

Watch the latest French release for Alban Lenoir's action scenes!!
pritypoddar1 May 2023
I chanced upon this French crime-action-thriller on Netflix and was totally taken aback by the planning and execution of it's action scenes, though it is not a genre that I particularly enjoy.

Alban Lenoir, the co-writer & lead actor of the film looks ultra-skilled and effortless in both hand-to-hand combat and close range shooting scenes.

There is enough blood and gore in the movie, but still the movie appears realistic. Even though the body count is high, the act in itself is never glorified.

Amidst all the blazing guns and bullet wounds on his body, Alban Lenoir's Adam Franco, the protagonist turns out to be quite headstrong in protecting young children, which adds the required humanity angle to the film.

The story unfolds at a relatively slower rate, but it's never boring. Your 122 minutes are well taken care of.

Better than you'd expect
Shanghai_Expat29 April 2023
First the film is in French, so if you speak french or don't mind reading subtitles it's a solid choice.

It's kind of a Jason Bourne / Extraction type film, but done in a more realistic manner. Magazines aren't always magically full, the bad guys don't die from one shot while the good guys get shot 5 times and keep fighting, and while the hero is heroic, he's not completely impervious to the bad guys like a lot of action movies portray heroes.

Alban Lenoir does a great job being a badass and doesn't ruin the movie trying to look cool or have some stupid catch phrase that makes it cheesy. I definitely would watch another movie where he's the hero.

The action is really great, the sets are good, and you can stay immersed in the story pretty easily. The story is good and has a couple twists, but there's a couple of predictable times as well which was a little disappointing.

The fight scenes and shootouts are really good, the close quarter fighting is stellar but some of the long range shooting is not as good as it could have been. Hero not having enough cover, the missed shots causing little explosions, etc...

Overall a really solid action movie that won't disappoint you, If it were in English (I don't mean dubbed), I think more people would be talking about it.

Gritty and violent, yet entertaining crime drama from France (Eric Cantona alert!)
paul-allaer3 May 2023
AKA (2023 release from France; 118 min) brings the story of Adam Franco, an undercover special opps guy who is afraid of nothing or nobody. The French Minister of the Interior's chief of staff orders Franco to infiltrate a criminal gang in order to track down the whereabouts of a bombing suspect.... At this point we are less than 10 minutes into the movie.

Couple of comments: this is the feature length directing debut of Morgan Dalibert, previously a well-known cinematographer. Dalibert co-wrote the script along with Alban Lenoir, the erstwhile stunt man-turned-actor who plays the role of Adam Franco. These two know each other well, having collaborated on "Lost Bullet". Here they bring a gritty crime drama. I must admit that based on the film's opening sequence, I was expecting something more glamorous, but once the story really got goin, I found myself fully invested. Let me be very clear, tough: this is a very violent movie, and the body count is off the chart, so if that is not your thing, please find something else to watch. Eric Cantona alert! Yes, the French soccer star from the 1990s who played for Manchester United for 5 years, has continued to build a very nice acting career after retiring from football. Here he plays the head of the criminal gang, one of the pivotal roles in this film. Bottom line: my expectations were surpassed with this movie, and these 2 hours just flew by.

AKA started streaming on Netflix just last weekend, and I watched it last night. If you like a crime drama that is gritty and violent, yet that is also wildly entertaining with solid performances all around, I'd readily suggest you check this out, and draw your own conclusion.

[6.9] The beast
cjonesas4 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
To my standards, a mild and averagely fast-paced action crime thriller movie with the usual good mishmash, general and standard to these types of films, generic villains and more often than not one-man-army hero and protagonist.

This one though has impressive qualities too on his own terms, it has a hero who respectuously looks like a crossbreed between a Bulldog and a Pit-bull, is as charismatic as Picasso's creations aflame, as much heart as a wounded deer and as much martial arts techniques and firepower as a mini squad of GIGN. He only sees his goal, only listens to his wounded heart and physical injuries are for him like insignificant toys crashed under his feet even if he should pass out in between walking and action. All thanks to the inventors and manufacturers of bandages, duct tapes, adrenaline and epinephrine shots, he's able to attend to himself, stand up and annihilate as long as "behind the camera", bullets whizzing by and grenades flying "curvaceously".

AKA, also has heart and emotions to it and what he did for the boy cannot be forgotten, from an unlikely birthday present to saving his world and life; He lives by his own code of honor and I greatly praise him for that.

Most if not all reviews are enthusiastic and they are right, we just differ in our ratings. Honestly, I expected a flashier screenplay, putting the impressive Alban Lenoir in the spotlight more than he was, bathing us with mindless martial art and hand-to-hand combat honey, but, that's OK, that's a French movie and I know their vibe and making, AKA is true to French action-crime productions, gritty, dark, mostly realistic and relentless and I'm quite satisfied. The last scene in the bus, sitting and calming down, I couldn't help but see a "beast" with a body nearly occupying two seats; Impressive and scary.

Hint note: He deserves to be cast as Cain Marko the Juggernaut in a fresh and serious Marvel production, his life before the Cyttorak stone and after.

Solid thriller
Luigi Di Pilla29 April 2023
Sincerely, I liked the first ten minutes and the last third of this thriller about a terrorism organization. You have to pay attention to understand what's really going on. It's not a new story at all but it is solid enough to spend an entertaining Saturday evening.

There are good combats but also shooting scenes with a great performance of the main agent. There were many turns and twists on a certain emotional level. Then the cinematography was well done, especially the the first pictures in Lybia.

If you like this kind of terrorist movies check out American Assassin, the top Bin Laden thriller Zero Dark Thirty or all the Bourne Identity movies.

Rating: 6/10.

Over the top but entertaining.
deloudelouvain10 August 2023
Writer/director Morgan S. Dalibert made this enjoyable French action movie. Well it is enjoyable to watch if you're not too annoyed by a character that can take out an entire army of bandits by himself. Because co-writer/actor Alban Lenoir is playing that character, tough as nails, able to take somebody out by one sucker punch, and there's also nothing wrong with his aiming skills either as every bullet ends up in the skull of a criminal. It's of course all over the top but so are most of the movies in this genre. If you want action then this is a movie for you. No time to rest in this movie, it's action scene after action scene, but they're well choreographed and shot. Eric Cantona, once an immensely popular French footballer (or soccer for the Americans) plays the top boss in AKA. Besides being great at football he knows how to act as well. He's always been tough in sports so this role was a good one for him. I will never score a movie in this genre with more than a seven as it's over the top and not very believable, but it's entertaining, and that's the most important thing with these kind of movies.

Bourne Identity & Taken & Nobody, French style
CouchTV28 April 2023
I've always read imdb user reviews before, and this is my first time reviewing a movie, because this French movie AKA on Netflix surely deserves a review (there's none yet at the time of my writing).

AKA is like a combination of some well produced movies that come to mind such as the Bourne series, Taken, Nobody, John Wick, Heat etc. Heroes who should just have been left alone. Heroes with good souls who have to decide who to protect, whose orders to follow, and what to fight for.

There's a lot of action, fighting & shooting. But these are not the mindless kind of fighting. The script is not bad with unexpected stories and characters. The action hero is played by a French actor Alban Lenoir I have never heard of, who manages to play the role just as well as Matt Damon, Liam Neeson, or Keanu Reeves would have played had they acted in this movie.

I give it 9/10. If I were the movie editor, some scenes could have been cut out and were not necessary, to reach a wider audience. Other than that, most of the characters were well played; the action scenes were done very well; the script was clever with an appropriate overlay of effective music soundtrack.

Honestly surprised by how good this movie was. I watched it with a low expectation, so just pretend that you have not read my review, don't know anything about this movie, and watch it with no expectation or idea about the movie.

We want more, again ; Alban Lenoir builds his mythology
AKA sees the character of Alban Lenoir complete his mythology after Lost Bullet (2020) and Lost Bullet 2 (2022). Here, he joins a gang led by Éric Cantona, made up of more or less broken arms and incompetents, as part of an infiltration process that makes this an investigative crime film with espionage elements at stake in the French services' investigation.

Compared with the two Lost Bullet films (it's inevitable to compare AKA with these), all three of which were directed and co-written by Alban Lenoir: he creates a mythology of action heroes with brawn and brains, even ethics, in a "low-tech" style, i.e. Without excessive digital technology. In comparison, AKA seems a little clumsy and less dramatic than Lost Bullet.

Once again, it's worth noting that the female characters aren't just a foil; they hold the key to the dramatic arc.

The overall dramatic line also lends a certain interest in the film, in which our hero, Alban Lenoir, finds himself (re)involved in a battle between things he never imagined and is therefore forced to revise his bearings: Eric Cantona's child, for example.

Betrayal was the mechanic of two Lost Bullet films; it is again in this one, which fuels the twists and turns and keeps the viewer captivated over time.

Bad in every aspect
Alexanders-29 May 2023
Some might want to check their testosterone levels when writing reviews and then go over their words again. AKA is a bad movie in every way, with the quality of a video game with Blood Patches in the shootouts. There is shooting for all it's worth, the bad guys drop like flies, and the hero is only minimally injured. And even if you swallow this toad, it shows once again that French action movies often fail because of two things. First, they have no humor at all, and second, the actors are worse than bad. Taciturn cynics with their hearts in the right place might save a small child, but not an entire film that is too long, too cheap and miserably acted.

Action, drama, thriller with fantastic performances
rashid-popal30 April 2023
The rating (6.7) doesn't justify this beautiful movie.

Take Jason Bourne and John wick and add alot of emotions and drama and realness.

The action is very raw, the suspense keeps you on the edge from start to finish, some twists here and there and the performances are the real treat here.

Specially from the main character. How he is Introduced and where he gets at the end of movie is understandable. Unlike many big action/thriller (big budget) movies, you actually understand every characters decision making. Even those who don't get much time for character development.

For a Netflix movie, it can't get much better. We need more of this Netflix. Budget well spent.

AK (47) or AKA?
searchanddestroy-128 April 2023
This action movie stars Alban Lenoir, the first French actor since Jean Paul Belmondo to play bad ass characters; except that Jean Paul Belmondo was a confirmed actor, one of the greatest French actor ever, which is not the case of Alban Lenoir, who is closer to Jason Statham or JCVD than Belmondo. OK, Lenoir made a terrific performance back in 2015 in UN FRANCAIS, a so powerful, bitter, gritty French film. I can already say, predict that Lenoir will never do better in the future. When I think that next year, he will play in the sequel of his 2015 other film ANTIGANG - pure garbage - and also in - Oh My God, I can hardly believe it - a remake of Henri George Clouzot's WAGES OF FEAR, it self already remade by the genius William Friedkin.... When I think in Alban Lenoir in Yves Montand or Bruno Cremer's roles...."Wages of fear" for me and the audiences.... So, at last - sorry - concerning this one, I expected far worse, precisely because of Lenoir's presence, but I was rather satisfied with the result; good directing, production design, but a story not flawless at all, overall predictable and a cheesy ending for my taste. An ending that could preview a sequel. Oh my God!!!! But with Alban Lenoir, remember him in BALLE PERDUE 1 and 2 craps, also for Netflix....

How did you know where to find him?
nogodnomasters18 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is a French film. I watched it dubbed in English and outside of a few scenes it was hard to tell it was French. The film centers on Adam Franco (Alban Lenoir) who was trained to fight and kill as a teen and given a new identity after he nearly died with five bullet wounds. Adam does not say much. No funny lines or retorts. He asks questions and shoots. A hotel was attacked in Paris believed to be the work of a southern Sudan Islamic group lead by Moktar (Kevin Layne). Franco is charged with infiltrating Victor's (Eric Cantona) group of criminals who has contacts with Moktar. Adam's early assignments gets him baby sitting duties as he looks after young Joey (Noé Chabbat), the eight year old son of Victor's consort. When Joey gets kidnapped plot elements reveal themselves.

It was an interesting story. I wish a famous American actor had the lead, but such was not the case. Kept me alert.

Guide: F-word. 1 brief sex scene. Exotic dancers in pasties.

Politically correct antagonists highlight this moderately entertaining but implausible French action thriller
Turfseer3 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Political correctness is not solely a Hollywood phenomenon, as exemplified by the new French-language action thriller AKA.

Alban Lenoir portrays Adam Franco, a French Government Special Ops agent. He's essentially a killing machine, with a dark past that involved being incarcerated at a young age for a revenge killing stemming from a domestic violence incident.

From the beginning, Adam is an unlikable character. After escaping from his captors inside a cave in Libya, he not only slaughters a group of terrorists but also kills their main hostage-a woman we expect him to save. This woman, it turns out, was a progressive social activist journalist. So, why is the protagonist, Adam, initially introduced as a villain?

Well, it's all about redemption, folks. Adam takes orders from the enigmatic Kruger (Thibault de Montalembert), who is in cahoots with Senator Marconnet (Philippe Résimont). Marconnet wants Adam to locate Moktar al Tayeb (Kevin Layne), a Sudanese warlord whom he holds responsible for a recent terrorist bombing in Paris.

To find Moktar, Adam must infiltrate crime boss Victor Pastore's (Eric Cantona) syndicate, as Victor seems to have some connection to the alleged terrorist.

Victor initially appears tough, but surprisingly, his entire operation is funded by his wife Natalya (Sveva Alviti), who runs a brothel.

The first step towards Adam's redemption is when he forms a bond with Victor's stepson, Jonathan (Noé Chabbat), and subsequently saves him after the boy is kidnapped by Victor's rival, Amet (Igor Kovalsky). Adam implausibly dispatches the rival crime boss and his thugs in one of the many violent sequences scattered throughout the film.

With the help of two other undercover agents, Adam gets back on track. Unfortunately, these agents are eliminated before they can locate the alleged terrorist.

Finally, Adam earns significant brownie points when he finds Moktar. However, the twist is that Moktar is not the terrorist we anticipated. It's unclear whether Marconnet needed a scapegoat for the recent bombing or was concerned about his previous connection with the Sudanese leader, who apparently fell out of favor with the French government.

Adam discovers Moktar in a makeshift hospital, where the warlord is praying for his young daughter's recovery from severe injuries inflicted by Kruger's government forces.

Moktar is killed by the government soldiers, but Adam saves the day by rescuing his injured daughter. It's puzzling why nobody is pursuing Adam after he eliminates numerous soldiers, but there's a hint that Marconnet's influence has waned when the media exposes his scheme to blame the innocent but now deceased Moktar.

While watching AKA, you won't gain much insight into the ideology behind modern-day terrorists. We catch a glimpse of faceless villains in the opening scene, but that's about it.

Did you really expect the film's screenwriters to depict Moktar as a vicious bad guy spouting fundamentalist slogans? Instead, the antagonists are one-dimensional right-wing ideologues determined to suppress those who embrace progressive (left-wing) politics.

Adam however improbably proves himself to be a humanitarian, especially when he decides against killing Moktar and saves his daughter.

Ironically, most Western governments today lean towards excessive left-leaning social activism. So, why are the bad guys in contemporary films so often one-dimensional right-wingers in positions of power?

AKA is brimming with implausible yet well-choreographed action scenes, which may be enjoyable to watch. However, the portrayal of the antagonists can only be described as a "cheap shot."

Solid realistic action scenes
QuadPi26 June 2023
I'm a sucker for realism. And there's some solid realistic action scenes in this movie. Ok, he takes much More punishment than a normal human Being should take. Fair. But some of the shooting scenes are excellent in terms of realism. Also some of the hand to hand combat is excellent. He probably should be Dead about 10-15 times in this movie (I didn't really count). It's unrealistic in terms of how much he can take, but that's basically every action hero movie. But the rest is good.. it's also a big gritty which I like, it's not polished.

It's an okay action movie. And rated as such. It's not rated as a drama movie. It's not very deep, and that's kind of the point of all action movies, they're made to entertain and not challenge The mind or the Soul. And this movie is certainly entertaining enough, and I wouldn't mind sequels as long as the quality doesn't drop.

"I believe that children are our future".
fostrhod24 May 2023
AKA (2023) French film staring Eric Cantona, yes that Eric Cantona plays a gangland boss Victor

Undercover cop infiltrates a crime syndicate with the principal aim of immobilising a terrorist plot. I think that's about it. Oh yes he befriends the drug lords (Cantona) young son.

The undercover cop is as hard as nails, taking shots and machete blows to the body on numerous occasions, these French are hard.

Lots of "call of duty" style shoot em ups, with head shots a plenty and brain spattering here there and everywhere.

That said it is quite tense, and to quote Whitney Houston "I believe that children are our future" what the film and you'll know what I mean.

Ps Eric Cantona is pretty good, watch it in French to get his full on Gallic accent and not a badly dubbed English accent. Its an implausible 6/10.

A pretty decent action film
LetsReviewThat264 May 2023
AKA is the latest Netflix original release, and this time we go to france for this one. Alban Lenoir plays Adam. A member of the special ops. That gets caught up in gang related dealings. The clients son he bonds with and it seems like the two could become father and son since he was more interesting in him than the parents. The one big strength this movie had was its action scenes. There were enough of them to keep me entertained and they were coreographed well. As for the rest of the movie some bits were a little here and there but the script was alright. Overall AKA was a pretty decent movie for what it was, with a good cast.

Alban Lenoir kicking butt!!
paulclaassen1 April 2024
Early in the film, warlord Moktar Al Tayeb's wife and child is gunned down. Moktar is believed to be responsible for a terrorist attack on a hotel. Adam Franco (Alban Lenoir) is a special ops agent who is assigned to infiltrate Victor Pastore's clan, and to gain his trust. Victor is a friend of Moktar's and getting close to him will get Adam closer to Moktar.

Impressed by his physical strength, Victor appoints Adam bodyguard to his step-son Jonathan. With Jonathan getting very little attention from his family, he instantly bonds with Adam. There's just something special about a tough guy showing compassion for a child that stirs the senses.

As tension rises between Victor's clan and a rival gang lead by Amet, the action intensifies. The action choreography is very good and Alban Lenoire is excellent as Adam (and he is so darn sexy too!!). The fight scenes are fast and brutal. There's an interesting twist regarding Moktar during the finale.

'AKA' is a fast-paced action film that is sure to satisfy action buffs.

Intense Action-Drama From The Creators' Team Of "Lost Bullet"
folk_egm30 April 2023
AKA French action movie on Netflix created by the team Lost Bullet. The story follows an undercover agent who must face an emotional test when he infiltrates a gang of criminals and unexpectedly forms a close bond with the boss's son.

This is an action-drama movie with well-written plot details that successfully blend moral principles with the role of a killer spy. Despite Alban Lenoir not having a traditionally handsome appearance, his acting skills in this movie are much more impressive compared to his previous work in "Lost Bullet." His intense solo action scenes are still present even though the movie emphasizes more on the drama aspect. Overall, this is a highly recommended streaming movie that should not be missed.

Spend my time
magoustasmidis3 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
After watching 2 hours I end up with more unsolved questions than I had in the first 5 minutes. I will start with the plot (if there is one). This movie could be 15 minutes plot wise. There is some details in the start and some in the end. The best plot was near the end, when the Sudan prime minister had a 2 minutes speech Wich was good but had nothing to do with the rest of the movie and they didn't use it at all. I felt like watching two different movies, one with the main story and a side story. The side story was 2 hours tho. The 9/10 of the movie didn't have any means to exist and didn't help in the plot development.

All characters was flat. One digital personalities with Characters overreacting. Not even close to reality in what they were doing. I didn't find a reason to like anyone and no reason to hate them either and no one of the characters had an ark. Most of the time I was very confused why they do, what they do.

Actors was not that's good. Main protagonist start a try of acting after the second third of the movie. The best actor was the small kid.

Has some action scenes but the edit destroys it. The cuts was all over the place camera didn't follow the movements of what's going on right and the open plans was through objects, doors, windows, cars, security cameras and other stuff. There was a scene when 4 characters gun shooting their way to get from one car to an other and I lost time and space from all the cuts and camera movements. Couldn't understand which one is moving which side and which distance has one and other. One of the best fight that out protagonist supposed to show us and the others how good he is was through a green screen security camera and I couldnt even see which one was the protagonist until all others was on the floor, so I guessed that's him. The hole movie has a dark filter that made everything and everyone looks the same 5 meters from the camera.

No plot twists, not clever lines, not bonds between characters, not character build, not anything to keep you in a realistic mode. I felt like there was no meaning to anything anyone was doing from start to the end. I think movie could get under base (5+/10) if the give a little more time in editing. A lot of things I needed to accept that happened but it didn't show me why it end up happening.

I'm trying to find things that I like but not a single things come to mind. Maybe the protagonists punches..... but that's all. Over all nothing special.

Rolling a 7 "the hard way"
Dalibert is no stranger to this genre of action film. He could have taken the easy route and strung together a series of action tropes to move things along. He knows how to do it. He has done it before. And well. But this time he rolled the dice on a much harder bet. This time he teased out the characterizations to keep the viewer hooked. This is most definitely NOT some sort of clever hodge-podge of different movies. The closest analog is MAN ON FIRE 2004, which also relies heavily on the interaction between a hardened killer and a young boy. This may not be a film for everyone, but the more time you spend with it, the more interesting it gets. ((Designated "IMDb Top Reviewer." Please check out my list "167+ Nearly-Perfect Movies (with the occasional Anime or TV miniseries) you can/should see again and again (1932 to the present))

A French action thriller film It's about a special agent who is hired to infiltrate a mobster and gain his trust, to reach someone else and eliminate him. Quality Entertaining, what starts as something generic unfolds. The performances are fine. Action stunts in place. Good bullets, crashes and blood. He takes the time to develop his protagonist and the situations that surround him. Intrigues. Betrayals. Mafia. Nudes and careful sexual scenes. It has well-achieved and carried shots. It has twists that you don't expect and others that you do. A movie that should be in theaters because of the action it has. Nice sunday girl It does its job, which is to entertain.

Standard Netflix movie treating about France
nrvbm13 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Disappointing story which is just another anti-France movie with the standard stereotypical Netflix plot (evil French government/politicians which are stealing African resources and local politicians. - terrorists are in fact good people just trying to save kids).

An insult to every French soldiers dying in African soil to fight terrorism and defend civilians.

As a note: France has never been involved in South Sudan.

A good cast - some good action scenes (though poor ending), just too bad that Netflix couldn't avoid to put this negative political message as always when treating about France.
