This episode was a fantastic way of officially introducing how terrifying Thorgil is. I thought Thorkell was terrifying at times in the prologue, but Thorkell seems so upbeat and joyous in a way while Thorgil seems much more serious, and dare I say maybe even stronger than Thorkell. I don't see it happening this season but I'm praying those two get a fight scene down the line because that would be the showdown of the ages. But that's not the only reason why I love Thorgil. The way he was able to detect Canute's plan that was set out to have Ketil's son win was very impressive and shows that he can't be fooled by anyone, even the man who's been ruling over them.
Even though he seems like the generic annoying spoiled kid, I think Olmar is an interesting character. As much as he boasts around people and tries to use his family name to stomp over others, it's intriguing how much he wants to become a warrior deep down inside, as we saw in the Canute scene last episode. But when the task of killing people comes up, as we saw in this episode as well as episode 3, he seems very sensitive to the idea. At first I asked myself why this was the case given how easy it is for his brother Thorgil, but I think Thorgil is the indirect reason why. His father is clearly terrified of Thorgil and I'm assuming he made Thorgil out to the man he is today, but when he saw how ruthless he became Ketil regretted it and told himself that would never happen again. Leading to why Olmar is so much of a polar opposite from Thorgil. I could be wrong and maybe Olmar is naturally like that, but I don't see any other reason why the two son's would be so different.
This episode foreshadowed many great things to come. The potential reunion between old man Leif and Thorfinn, the on-going conflict between Ketil and Thorgil, the aftermath of Olmar processing the events of this episode, and the potential showdown between the Ketil family and Canute's men being led by Floki. And the fact that these events could all be taking place on Ketil's farm at the same time is going to make it that much better.
Sometime in the future I'd love to see Thorfinn find out that Floki was the one to put the hit out on his father. We've seen Thorfinn become a better man and shy away from his old ways of harming others without emotion, but I have a feeling deep down that this new Thorfinn won't last much longer, and I think that possible revelation could be a reason why.
Nonetheless this was one of the best episodes this season and while I loved the slow pace character building of the season so far, things are finally coming into fruition and it seems the stakes are about to be raised much higher.
