Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you!

Warning: Spoilers
The episode opens with two characters going into a comic shop and asking 'Where is Jessica Hyde?". When nobody admits to knowing her they kill everybody there. Having drawn a blank there they continue kill and torture to find her location. Elsewhere a civil servant is told that he must get his minister to order a flu remedy despite it not being needed; if he doesn't his wife will be harmed. And finally there is the apparently main story; two men and a woman meet up after going on an online forum to discuss the graphic novel 'The Utopia Experiments'... one of the men is convinced that it explains a series of conspiracies; it seems like paranoia but the online group is being targeted by the men looking for Jessica Hyde.

This new thriller got off to an interesting start; raising many questions without providing any answers. The opening scene grabbed my attention but must admit to being put off by the scene where we see the protagonists chatting on line; the words they type appearing on the screen were so tiny that either we weren't meant to be able to read them or Channel Four doesn't care about viewers without huge screens! Apart from that I enjoyed it though; the writing and direction were taut and the cast did a fine job. One or two scenes were quite gruelling; in particular a torture scene... I had to look away once or twice even though I suspect nothing really bad was actually shown. On the strength of this episode I will certainly be watching more; I just hope it isn't one of those series with an interesting premise that can't provide a good ending.

Came back here after 7 years.

Warning: Spoilers
I had just finished watching Umbrella Academy and was underwhelmed by the characters and the plot and what with the COVID-19 pandemic underway, I thought it was high time to revisit this classic.

Utopia has perhaps the most incredible first 5 minutes of any TV show in existence... Completely gripping.

Music score is genius, the colour palette is sublime and the story is intricate and insane.

But the characters... Oh the glorious characters. Each and every last one of them.

form over substance. what a pity

When the first scene of a pilot doesn't make sense in any possible way but it's clear that the only goal is shock the audience with a kind of violence dear to Tarantino... well... you don't have my attention.

The characters are flat and, pardon my French, unrealistically stupid. The pinnacle is the guy who gives his home address to a group of complete strangers he had met online. Come on. And these are the guys, based on trailers and whatnot, who are supposed to go against a dangerous conspiracy?

While I appreciate the stylistic choice of the oversaturated color palette - even though the risk is to fatigue the audience- the main sin is that the writing is lazy. It's one of those situations where "this happens, then this happens, then this happens", without much thought of cause and effect, rather the main concern is to arrange the sequences according to how "cool" they will be considered.

The gore is unnecessary, many questions that arise are useless, characters not only are not relatable but also unlikable. Not sure what is the theme of the series, since I wont keep watching it.
