Absolutely Horrible
bz_siege_013 July 2014
At some point in the future, scientists will be able to prove that watching terrible movies is harmful to your intelligence and overall psyche. The day they do that, this movie is going to be named in my lawsuit.

The wife and I love a good horror movie. But we also enjoy putting on a bad horror movie and making fun of it. Some movies, such as this one, are so bad that you can't even extract comedy from them.

For instance, it's been scientifically proved that Demons at the Door is the worst movie ever made (and will also be named in my lawsuit). However, it's so absurd that you can laugh at it.

I don't even need spoilers to illustrate how bad this movie is. The quality is just so bad that a lot of the time your face will be scrunched up in a "what the hell was the point of that?" expression.

The cuts are awful. In one scene, the blast of typical horror movie "shock" music cuts flat off. I almost guarantee they noticed something wrong with the scene in the editing room and instead of re-shooting, they just said, "cut it there."

There are long, pointless pauses in the dialog. The expressions don't match the actual mood. The scenes skip all over the place.

Worst... the music. Most modern horror movies use the typical method of focusing on the main character in the scene, then something flits by in the background while they play a short, intense burst of "shock" music meant to startle you. In most cases, without the sound, the scene wouldn't make you jump and wouldn't even be ominous. Well, apparently the person who produced this movie was so startled by the flit/shock- music thing during some movie that he decided to use it every few minutes. I'm not exaggerating. If they change scenes, there is a burst of shock music. If they zoom in on someone's face, it is accompanied by shock music. If the main character reaches for a Kleenex, it definitely calls for shock music. I was baffled when I reached for my coffee and no music played.

Acting wasn't terrible. Plot has been done a thousand times. Main actress is cute. But they should never have let the monkeys into the editing room... the choppy, ham-fisted style ruined even the possibility of a corny B movie and the subsequent laughs.

You've been warned.

Who edited this mess?!?!
amigajoe17 November 2013
Segments are clearly out of sequence, random bits of footage pop up for no reason, events are described before they happen, other parts are missing entirely. Obviously this was a salvage job, and not a very good one. Maybe production ran out of money, maybe key people quit(for not getting paid?), but for whatever reason, this was clearly not a complete film and what was there was thrown together with plenty of filler to pad it out to a sell-able run-time. There might have been decent movie in there but it wasn't finished and what was left was an incoherent mess that was thrown onto the market to try to recoup the loss from unsuspecting renters. Shame on the producers.

Failed film!
petarmatic15 March 2014
I rarely give 1 out of 10.

This film deserve 0 not 1.

Plot is not existent, it seemed to me that plot writer never before wrote a plot. What a shame! Acitng is areal disaster, did these actors ever acted before? Most striking of all is that they went and wrote false reviews for this film on IMDb.

It is the out-most cheater situation. Shame on you! I recommend that you make an effort and find this film and watch it. It is an example how bad films can get. It deserves that award given for the worse film of the year, what is it called The razzies? I think this film is so bad that it would not be nominated even for that award.

I wish I had something else to add, but it is not worth it.

Unbelievably bad attempt at film making
t-dooley-69-38691626 April 2015
I will start with what this 'film' is supposed to be about; here goes. Greg - an unsuccessful screen writer - and Rachel 'a beautiful journalist' investigate occasions of mass hysteria in some dreary backwater. This they cunningly discover may be linked to ergot poisoning!! Yes a theory that has been around since medieval times - that is investigative journalism for you.

So what happens? Well the villagers are all failed am dram applicants who have a penchant for wearing monks robes with hoods; they wander about in a lack lustre way to induce a sense of 'scariness'. The plot is such a botch that even if you can be bothered to follow it you will realise it was a waste of effort. The music is all overly dramatic and tries to add some horror by being jumpy etc - needless to say it fails miserably. The camera shots are childish, the SFX look like they were done on some 1980's Nintendo and the lighting is reminiscent of an insipid wedding video I was once forced to watch.

As mentioned the acting is beneath awful despite the efforts of the two 'stars' who do manage a half decent job of what is a laughable script. The rest of the ensemble should never have been put in front of a camera. We have scenes that are so obviously staged and stilted with no mood setting - just the 'shouting is acting' type approach. The sound levels vary too - possibly in an attempt to stave off a potential coma that could be induced from such turgid dross.

Some of the make up is juvenile too and the whole oozing mess is about as scary as putting your knickers on back to front. I think the 'unsuccessful screen writer' may be a case of art imitating life. The editing is lamentable with scenes all over the place and obvious filler that at least give you the chance to hit the fast forward. There is not one reason to see this atrocity and thousands why not too - seriously avoid like an e-coli buffet.

Bad on every level
joannechapman2123 November 2013
This film lost me 90 minute of my life I can't get back, so I feel the feel the need to warn others. The secret village is one of the worst films I have seen and unfortunately i have seen a lot, but this is one of the films that has prompted me to join IMDb and write a review. 1.The acting is awful the male and female lead in particular were bad 2.The editing was all over the place, couldn't follow the story due to that fact 3. Horrible annoying soundtrack that tries desperately to add suspense too this poor excuse of a film. 4. Cheap make up and costume obliviously bought from fancy dress shop. The director who adds his name to the cover and title of this film and as if he Is so proud should have hidden it at the back in very small lettering, especially if ever wants to direct again. He obviously fancies himself as a M Night type director due too the weak twist at the end but this he is not, $2 million was spent on this and when watching the credits at the end I saw that executive producer was someone with the same surname so obviously a rich relative indulged the writer director with the money to make this mess if a film. Note too that relative please don't indulge him any more spend your money on something more worthwhile. Don't watch this movie and destroy any copies you may see to stop other experiencing what I did.

What A Diastrous Mess....
jaholl18 October 2013
This movie is all over the place. The first thing I noticed was the bad background music; sounding as if it were composed and played by a 12 yr. old. The scenes jump back and forth which I contribute to poor, poor editing and direction.

There are people popping up here and there with no real background story to go on except it's a scary village and they keep to themselves. Oooooooooooh.

Big deal.

15 minutes into the movie you're thinking "who cares" and you're ready to exit out of it and move on to something actually good.

Don't believe the good reviews, they are fake
berry-john2218 December 2013
This is an incoherent mess.

The music is stupid.

The feel is low budget, it isn't scary. The parts that should be are just laughably bad.

It skips like a damaged record, it makes as much sense as a dream does when you are awake.

The 2.7 rating is probably generous.

It isn't unwatchable, but is rather unenjoyable even if you have really low standards.

The movie is inconsistent within it's internal logic, the viewer would have to be psychically linked to the main character and suffering from ergot poisoning for what is shown to make any sense.

Find another movie to watch.

One of the worst I've ever seen!
Zebb6712 July 2014
For those expecting a horror film, this is strictly G-Rated, Nancy Drew stuff with an ending that leaves lots of loose ends. Safe for the kids, though -- absolutely no language, violence, sex, nudity. But playing this for the kids will be worse for them than a time-out. Again, beware of films with an N/A -- that means it was never submitted to the MPAA, which means it went straight to video. Absolute garbage and it's super-low IMDb ranking is well-deserved. Trust me, any good reviews this crud receives was written by someone from the cast, production crew or adoring relatives. Points to anyone who can figure out the plot, which appears to have been made up as the filmmakers went along. You have been warned!

bad bad bad
isabellamaifr11 May 2014
I have to agree with the other reviews out there, this movie is awful. Bad acting, there is no real storyline (except some weirdly dressed people from the town running around trying to look like witches or magicians or just ugly faces (lol). Although I think the worst of it is the acting. Really, the acting tops it all, some of the worst that I've seen in quite some time and I saw a lot of horror movies already. Anyway I say don't watch it, it's a waste of time and if you made the mistake of buying the DVD or Bluray like I did, it's also a waste of money.

I think the idea for it is not that bad but the realization of it, well...that sadly went in the wrong direction ;)

Liked the movie
mvfan201019 October 2013
I watched the movie last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. The non-linear approach to story telling was interesting for me, though it took a while to get it. Some people might have found this confusing, but it seemed to be a new attempt especially when Rachael is recalling the restaurant scene.

The suspense was maintained very well until the end, and I absolutely loved the ending! A great attempt, and a good movie to watch in October.

There are some flaws that i noticed - it seemed a little slow in the middle that could have been avoided. A little more explanation on the hooded characters could have helped as well.

Over all, I liked the movie and many scenes kept me at the edge of the seat wondering what is going to happen next.

The Real Secret of the Secret Village Without Spoiling It
Ansabo-827-19559526 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
***Depending on your sensibility this review may contain some small scene spoilers.*** Wow! Swamy really takes a body downtown with his new thriller. Packed in tightly are: taut suspense scenes, scary music, gray and white flashbacks and a screenplay rivaling the best in Conrad, punctuated again and again with a pithy mantra worthy of Hitchcock himself, "Trust no one!" You begin to wonder whether a few crows or the shower scene in Psycho will show up. Trust me or not. Will nothing be left out? The secret I pondered as I watched deep-breathing scared rabbits hiding behind trees and under covers, praying not to get stabbed in the neck, was how scary could this possibly get? How many nightmares would I have? Or could this thriller turn comedic in a moment's notice? The answer came when a good guy, trying to help the terrified Rachel reporter, showed up in open shirt with suspenders and the brim on his large gray floppy felt hat flipped up. After two appearances with brim down--signifying utter seriousness of purpose--the flopped-up brim knocked me out of my seat, and I couldn't stop laughing. The price of admission is well worth that one moment of gut-wrenching laughter. This thriller will not fail to surprise even the most ardent Zombie-loving movie-goer. Don't miss it!

Awful movie
vlad-viziteu-78-95686318 January 2014
Probably one of the worst movies I have ever seen.

Characters with no background, awful sound, scenes with no logic.

The plot is obvious from the start, but the scenes seem to be taken of the context you know they should be in and that is just annoying.

Most actors don't have much to say in this movie, and those who do, have very weak dialogs. Also there are some scenes in which characters actions have no sense, logic. I understand that sometimes my expectations should not be very high if I watch a low budget movie, but it should have some sense.

The idea of the movie isn't that bad.

A movie should be a piece of art, something I cant say about this one.

Seriously?
dj_foxi_11-12 February 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I consider myself to be a big movie buff. Regardless of what genre and what grade of movie, I will watch it. I watched this movie under the assumption that it would be good. Anything that is remotely a thriller/suspense movie should be good, right? Nope.Nope.Nope.

I lost interest 5 minutes into the movie, barely managed to sit through the 85 minutes to follow but wanted to see what the 'fuss' was all about regarding the ending, and was severely disappointed. The score is quite bad. It reminds me of a pisstake on 80's horror films. The actors had NO probable cause for being on the screen, much less uttering a few lines, moving here and there and I kind of felt sorry for them. The editing is typical of a low budget film, but I've seen low budget films that are 10 times better than this mess.

I have read a fair few 'positive' reviews and they all say the same thing 'Non-linear'. This was all over the place. There is no substance, no climax, and nothing is ever clear enough for the viewer to actually understand what is going on.

Another thing that annoyed me was those two guys that were chasing the lead character throughout a majority of the movie. As soon as she would 'escape' their clutches, instead of jumping back in the car as she is driving off to pursue her, they keep walking forwards then stop and stand there, as if watching her drive off would somehow give her a change of mind and she may come back. Seriously? Where is the suspense?

Def would NOT recommend this movie. I'm sure the actors have to have at least one bad movie in their career and this is one of them.

Why? Dear Lord, Why?
karthikeyang-ganesan19 October 2013
I have seen some bad movies, but this one is right up there at the top.

If you could sit through this, there isn't anything in the world that you cannot achieve.

Fails miserably in every aspect there is to making a movie.

Horrible plot, horrible acting, horrible direction, horrible background score........

I mean there isn't anything remotely good about this movie.

Tie a cam around a cat and it would get you some interesting footage.

Absolute waste of time.

Want to punish someone? Recommend this movie to them.

Murky horror/mystery set in a village in Massachusetts.
suite9215 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Rachel is a reporter of sorts, and Greg is a screenwriter. Both of them become interested in reports of mass hysteria in a small town in Massachusetts. By some circumstance, they end up being room mates in a large house in the area.

The locals vary between not forthcoming and outright hostile. Rachel takes a job at a local eatery. Rachel keeps in touch with her boss by telephone. Greg floats around looking for information to help his creative process. Paul and Jim help Rachel with clues as they can. Greg's position turns out to be ambiguous; he steals some of Rachel's research materials and gives them to the villagers. Max, Rachel's boss, is glad to help her, but needs some sort of supporting facts before bringing in authorities to deal with the evil-doers.

Will Rachel get to the bottom of this? Will Greg's position become clear? Will the secrets be revealed?

-----Scores-----

Cinematography: 8/10 Mostly clear and sharp; only occasionally falls into shaky camera mode.

Sound: 6/10 The music is reasonably creepy, but is often over the top compared to the story and visuals.

Acting: 1/10 I have nothing good to say here.

Screenplay: 0/10 Where do I begin? Editing is a clear weakness; some clips are out of sequence. Exposition of motivations is not good; I saw only a pinch of that on two characters. Too many of the short conversations in the film seemed context free. The historical flashbacks seemed to have little or nothing to do with the main story line. The ending may have been meant to be as wonderful as the ending of The Sixth Sense, but it fell flat instead.

Sucked A**
mistadorothy13 March 2014
The Secret Village will go down on my list of the worst movies I have ever watched. What an utter waste of time. It makes absolutely no sense, is not in the least scary, has horrible acting, horrible directing, horrible soundtrack and is absolute crap. Don't believe any of the good reviews, they were obviously written by retards. I can't believe I wasted 90 minutes of my life (which I will never get back) on this shite. I wish I had ergot poisoning after watching this wretch. I don't understand why people waste so much money and time making movies that are this bad. I wish I had read reviews of this before I watched it.

Not just bad acting, bad everything
banglainey20 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I am pretty open when it comes to bad horror movies, it takes a lot to turn me off, but this movie I gotta say takes the cake. It was simply made bad.

To start, well, the acting is atrocious, but that is just the beginning of the problems, and probably the most forgivable. Aside from the terrible acting that at times made me physically cringe, the set design is horrible. There was one memorable scene where the lead actress is sleeping in a giant bed, and the linens are just so ugly and the shot so ill-composed all I can think is how ugly the linens are! This rings true for some of the people's clothing in the movie too, it seems like they just didn't put any thought into these aspects of the film just shot it with the actors wearing whatever old thing they could find in the storage closet.

Next I gotta say is the soundtrack. There are no good original songs, in fact most of it seems like stock background music, but the thing that is most annoying about the sound is the odd noises they would throw in to accompany some scenes. For example, regular stock music is playing while a woman walks down the street, the camera flips to show behind her, a man following her around a corner. The music that accompanies the appearance of the man is a garish trill of noise that you might suspect came from a kid's mystery show, like Blues Clues when they find a clue, or something. There are many examples of this throughout the film and the odd noises mixed in with terrible stock movie background music is very bad.

Next, the editing in the movie is sloppy and the voice-over work is also sloppy and seems like it is not even lined up with the movie correctly. Some scenes do not flow together correctly at all- it will appear as if there is a random voice-over on top of a scene where it shouldn't be. An example is, the main character driving down a road, a panned-out shot, and overhead we hear a woman's voice talking. We don't know who she is talking to or what context she is talking in. It is obvious she is talking to someone, but the fact that the image on the screen is of a car driving down the road does not connect who she is talking with. Are they both in the car and talking together?? Is she on the phone in the car talking to the man?? Is this conversation taking place later, after she reaches her destination, and we are just hearing it now during the scene while she is driving??? There are too many incidents of this in the movie and it causes a lot of confusion regarding the plot.

I am not sure, I think the plot might have been okay, but with the sloppiness of the movie design I cannot be positive. It is extremely hard to follow. I honestly only watched half of it, which is unlike me because I am one of those people who watches everything to the very end- love or hate it. This movie just I could not get into. Some parts might seem like they are getting good, there were these men in black robes that kept showing up, but they would never do anything and were never acknowledged by the people around them, so at times I was not sure if those guys were just another editing error or not. There also were scenes where it almost seemed like it was supposed to be a flashback but you could not tell it was supposed to be a flashback because again, the editing is so bad. It wasn't until over halfway through the film that I realized the scenes of the little girl were actually flashbacks of the main character as a child. The transition between the movie and the flashback was not obvious, so at first you think the scenes with a little girl are just another part of what is going on in the film currently.

Between the ugly acting and the ugly editing, I cannot approve or recommend this film to anyone at all. I actually fell asleep a little over halfway through, I remember the part I fell asleep at clearly because it was a chase scene, and for some reason the main character is being chased, she runs into a house, sits on the floor by the door, we hear pounding on the door and she is crying, and then the very next scene she is on the floor asleep, and I remember thinking, man this movie is so terrible even the main character falls asleep in the middle of a chase scene.

If there is anything redeeming about this movie, I would have to say it was some of the landscape and architecture scenes. Wherever they filmed the movie seems like it might be a cool place, but that is a rather insignificant fact and not relevant to the film at all and certainly not a reason to make the film worth watching. If there were any reason to watch this movie, it would be to learn what NOT to do when making a movie.

Can I please have my 90 mins back??
blackkangel22 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
OK, where to begin?

I will begin by saying that the overall premise of this movie, The Secret Village, may have had some promise but all in all really failed to deliver any positive impact. Rather, it only succeeded in leaving me with a frustratingly disappointed taste in my mouth. In short, I have found myself longing for a refund - not financially, but for the 90 odd minutes I spent in a catatonic coma as a result of watching this 'movie'. Put it this way, this movie made me really want to submit my first ever review, in a bid to save others.

I'm no stranger to horror/suspense flicks, and I'm often not even bothered by the BAD ones. But this bad movie really bothered me. It was hard to tell if the acting was bad, or if it was a reflection of the poor editing. It seemed like there were long and unnecessary pauses between every exchange in dialogue, which automatically created a sense of awkward uneasiness. The breaks in conversation and the scene changes were so long and drawn out - which essentially describes the entire movie. Ali Faulkner was OK, I wouldn't say bad. I have never seen her before, but she kind of reminded me of a young Brooke Shields. Jonathan Bennett was OK too. They weren't the worst actors in the movie, but far from stand-outs.

As I mentioned earlier, the premise of the movie was interesting, but poorly executed. This could have been a good movie - if it was directed differently. I don't know about this whole 'non-linear' nonsense. It wasn't artistic, nor was it successful in adding anything other than confusion and convolution. There were chops and changes that were absolutely unnecessary, and the film even started with a scene that literally had NOTHING to do with the movie. That in itself should serve as a red flag for anyone reading this who is considering watching it. The audio editing was atrocious, with some parts out of sync and the soundtrack and sound effects were too loud and comical at best. I have to say, I literally laughed at some of the sudden 'horror' sequences. The make-up and costuming made me feel like I was watching a period comedy. Honestly, I found myself wondering if the costume department only had enough of a budget to hire from a fancy dress company.

The movie had a handful of essential characters, and about 5 times as many absolutely unnecessary and often laughable ones. Spoiler alert: the people in cloaks walking and creeping around in ABSOLUTE SLOW MOTION have nothing to do with anything. Why are they hiding behind trees, and walking around so slowly? Are they crippled? Oh and there's the green faced absolutely hilarious witch with a hilarious Einstein wig who appears twice. Who is that? Why are the two sinister guys chasing the main character so inept at catching her? Why are they so weak every time they almost catch her? Why does a significantly smaller woman keep slipping out of their macho grasp. FYI none of these questions are answered. I'm not even going to venture into discussing the ending, which I spotted a mile away, as early as the main character started discussing the epidemic in the village. Talk about wrapping up a movie in a nice little bow!

Now, I know that there are some positive reviews here on IMDb, but judging from the fact that the handful of these positive reviews make the same statements - 'non-linear', 'good to watch in October', 'great acting (yeaaaaaah...ok)' - it really makes one wonder WHO is writing these positive reviews and whose interests they are representing or defending.

The tag-line for this movie mentions 'mass hysteria'. Don't be fooled. There is zero hysteria to be found. This movie honestly made me wonder who on God's green Earth finances these box office duds. Someone should pay these guys to stop making movies. I want 90 minutes of my life back.

A waste of 90 minutes
JDtheBigGuy28 October 2013
There are some films that watching them once just isn't enough. The Secret Village is not one of them. In fact watching it once was to much. If I were to recommend anything about this film then it would be to avoid it.

I think who ever edited the film must have done it whilst on a space hopper. Throughout the film we jumped from scene to scene and then back again.

The acting for the main part was passable to good, something I could not say about the script. So much made no sense and so little was explained unless you consider the revelation at the very end was enough to explain it all. It certainly wasn't enough for me.

I cannot say if it was a continuity problem or a post production disaster but there were a lot of scenes where the action of a cut made the action after the cut make no sense.

If you hope to follow the clues to work out what is going on then forget it because so little is explained that it feels as though the ending was just thrown together as a last minute add on.

don't understand all the bad reviews
Matthews6921 October 2013
I personally don't think that the movie was that bad.

My friend and I really enjoyed it. It was a little different from what I had expected but it certainly wasn't as bad as people are saying on IMDb.

The acting was pretty good. it was good to Jonathan Bennett in a different role and who doesn't love Richard Riehle I mean Office Space the ultimate favorite.

The story line was some what confusing at times but it did answer all questions at the end. and i think that was what a movie should be about. Or do you all want all the answers right at the beginning? seriously now.

Well for me it was good acted, directed edited and the music was great as well. I will definitely suggest the movie to all my friends.

Its a great thriller/horror at the perfect time released in October.

Worth Watching Movie.
mahendrans7721 October 2013
I watched the movie last Friday (Oct 18'th) and found it very interesting. What i liked is the different screenplay and the Nonlinear Narrative Style. The Director carried the suspense throughout the movie and the climax is really interesting which i did not expected.I expected more action scenes, but the director Swamy compensated with his sound effects and few chasing scenes.

There are more chances that the director can come with a sequel to the movie and create a brand with the title.

I would suggest to watch the movie both in screens and also in DVD.I am surprised to see how people can comment about the movie from different places where the movie was not screened. The audience needs to judge the movie with their own instinct rather going with the comments posted by others.

Worst Nightmare
shaannahmed23 October 2013
I was shocked to see those actors working in "this" movie! This movie proved to be a total disaster. Story itself was alright and could be turned into a good movie by professional director.

Only 3 actors were actually justifying their jobs and i think only because they were professionals, no thanks to director! Working in these kind of movies, actors lose their credibility & to be honest, i watched it only because 'Jonathan Bennett', 'Ali Faulkner' & 'Richard Riehle' are in this movie. Now i wish i hadn't seen it!! In my opinion, even if you don't have budget to make a classy movie, you can still make it really good by dedicating time and see what really needs to be done and what is waste of effort. Like, many scenes were out of sync & sudden pop-up of random people who had nothing to do with movie actually was kinda lame.

'Possibly a good story, gone to waste'..

A bad movie that isn't even enjoyably bad
redrover200410 May 2014
Bad movies that are bad and know it - the ones that don't take themselves seriously - can usually be fun. This movie is NOT one of those, it is just plain terrible.

I was angered by the several "good" reviews about this movie, because as other observant reviewers already pointed out, they are likely all fakes. Well, here is another first-time reviewer's opinion, and it definitely won't contain kind words towards this waste of time. This is easily one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Within the first 5 minutes my attention started to wander, and once the first bits of "action" started out of the blue, I couldn't care less about any of the characters. There is very little character development, and the bit that there is did not evoke any sort of emotional attachment. I found myself actually rooting against the lead actors. By the time the end credits rolled around, I was more interested in watching Back to the Future for ideas to go get my time back.

Any good review of this movie either is a result of trolling, or from someone who can make money off it. Please avoid this movie, and watch something else. You can never be desperate enough for a thriller to watch this...

A Torture to the Viewer
Blonde229119 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is titled like a true horror and mystery movie, but it turns out to be a complete disappointment. The movie starts out with a hint on the witchcraft and then many people wearing black robes appear at times. In the middle of this, the lead character, Rachel (Ali Faulkner), is going from one place to another. She is trying to talk to people, but nobody wants to talk. And..., that's your movie. Oh wait, there is a surprise near the end, if you are not asleep by then.

The way, this movie has been filmed, causes headache after some time. There are long and frequent scenes of people walking around without any explanation of what is happening. Often the scenes are not connected and the viewer is left totally clueless as to what is happening.

The movie is filmed at a very slow pace. Had this movie been filmed normally, it would have been only a 20-30 minute video. But the director seems to enjoy lengthening the scenes unnecessarily - adding to the annoyance of the viewer.
