Sex & Nudity

- A lot of sex. Some scenes, but not all, are done using CGI and camera tricks. Example: You don't actually see a penis go into a girl's mouth when she gives oral sex. You just see the top part of her head going up and down.
- The Australian version is heavily modified so no vaginal shots are seen. However throughout the movie, there is a constant flow of closeups of men's penises ejaculating, all including erect and flaccid.
- Several instances of erect penises displayed in full view. In one scene, the main character performs unsimulated oral sex on a man.
- The Director's Cut version is extremely explicit, with many closeup shots of vaginal and anal penetration.
Violence & Gore

- Some violent scenes, strong and bloody.
- Joe goes to a young man, only referred to as K, who performs sadomasochistic acts on women who desire such. He ties her up and whips her buttocks many times until the skin is covered with welts and blood.

- The second volume is extremely disturbing and violent, and the sex scenes/nudity are intense. These sequences unexpectedly start and end abruptly.
- The scenes with K are quite graphic, and can be hard to watch.

- At the end of the film, a man pulls his limp penis out of his pants, holds it a few inches away from her butt and tries unsuccessfully to arouse himself, to rape her.
Violence & Gore
- The abortion scene in the directors cut is very very graphic, you see multiple devices inserted deep into the vagina, with blood around it in some shots, with cuts of Joe screaming in pain, it is extremely disturbing and realistic, you also see an x ray of a fetus being impaled with one of the devices, when she pulls it out you see the fetus come out the bloody vagina, still breathing in a pile of blood, NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED.
- Joe pulls a gun on Jerome, but has failed to rack the automatic. He circles her silently, knocks her down, and proceeds to beat her up, leaving her lying on the ground. After having brief sex with Jerome, P walks over and urinates on Joe.
- Seligman attempts to rape Joe, assuming that she, as a self proclaimed nymphomaniac, who has had sex with thousands of men, shouldn't care. The screen cuts to black as Joe grabs the gun out of her pocket. Only the sounds of what is transpiring are heard: Joe cocks the gun and shoots Seligman. We hear the thump of a body and Joe quickly leaving the apartment.
- ONLY ON DIRECTORS CUT: Joe performs an abortion to herself, with instruments from her home. The scene is very graphic, when she is shown penetrating her vagina with different sized sticks with blood coming out and on the end she digs a small fetus out. The pulling out the fetus is suprisingly quick, but certainly intense.
Frightening & Intense Scenes
- The abortion scene in the directors cut is extremely disturbing and graphic, and goes on for some time.
- There is a scene, reminiscent of von Trier's earlier work, that Joe's infant son approaches the ledge of a nearby window. The child doesn't fall.
- The scene where Jerome attacks Joe after she tries to kill him is intense.
- The scene shown in director's cut where Joe performs an abortion to herself with very graphic details. Can be distressing for certain viewers both sensitive to graphic scenes of women's anatomy and to viewers who may have experienced traumatic events related to those depicted.
