A great episode, except for Bones's hair. That's just tragic.

The One Where Bones Is On The Run...

Warning: Spoilers
I love this episode. It is such a great Season Premiere.

After last seasons finale, we now see Bones, a blonde Bones, that is, on the run, with her daughter Christine. Since Palant has changed evidence to show that Bones is guilty, she had to quickly pack up her life and her daughter, and get away from Washington D.C. as soon as possible. Months later, we see Booth contacting Bones and he finds out that her Dad, Max, has been helping her.

Meanwhile, back at the lab, Angela, Hodgins and Cam are trying to find a way to prove that Palant is the bad guy. Eventually, Angela decrypts some video footage, that had Bones on the tape, and made it back to the original, without Bones on there.

Overall, I give this episode a 9 out of 10.

Maybe Too Much?

This is the episode where a trap is set and Pelant is finally taken in. The whole set of circumstances leading to his arrest are quite gratifying. A great many clues are used and the squints work to set things up for the capture. They even get Bones back in the lab to prove that in his younger day, Pelant killed a young woman. The technological trickery that he used is broken and justice is done. That, of course, should be enough. After much celebration over their good fortune, a new development puts them back at square one. Personally, I believe it is contrived, although Perant does have all that expertise and may even fool a major government.

Not A Strong Start

Hi Bones Booth Pod!

I think it should be noted that while Bones is my favorite show, I don't think Season 8 is that good. I think that is evident even with this first episode. It is a continuation of the Pelant arc from Season 7, but at this point, Pelant has already overstayed his welcome and I wish that his arc had ended sooner than it does, (the length of which is a spoiler). While he isn't the root cause of the tension between Booth and Brennan, he certainly exploits insecurities and other cracks in their relationship that then leads to more tension. Brennan is still the one who chose to leave Booth for 3 months, but if Pelant hadn't put her in a position where she felt like she had to go on the run, she of course never would have left Booth.

While you can't expect even fictional couples to have zero problems, (because that would be both unrealistic and boring) it frustrates me that this is how to narrative chose to drive an initial wedge between Booth and Brennan. There are better ways to create conflict for them without it having to be manufactured in such a dumb way.

The scene where Booth and Brennan kiss on top of the washing machine is the highlight of the episode for me. The rest is very meh.
