More crypto computer nonsense
cpotato10106 December 2022
Once again, they hold up the holy grail of a computer cypher that can unlock anything. Not even science fiction, more science fantasy.

Any computer system with top secret info is going to be air-gapped. And without clearance, you are not touching those computers. Literally. Even if you are from the vendor who supplied the computers, you cannot touch the keyboard if you are onsite, helping out those who ARE cleared. And definitely no USB devices allowed.

On the other hand , once you get past that, it becomes the usual search for the McGuffin, who has the cypher, and who committed the murder.

They do uncover a spy and its handler, but it does not appear they were able to do much, the spy not having (real) clearance to access the computer systems described.

I do wish they would make up their minds about Delilah Fielding. Is she loving wife or jealous B? It seems to be such a waste of.Margo Harshman's talents.

Had potential

Warning: Spoilers
The implausible plot cleverly woven around interesting characters is trade mark NCIS, but there is something lacking these days ( and I don't just mean Gibbs). The characters are interesting and plot is complex and geeky enough to suspend disbelief ( this one anyway) but there's an energy and urgency lacking in the delivery. Everyone is too nice, and without the internal team tension of teasing and crossing the line of workplace bullying, the jibes and jokes don't have the sting that injected the older seasons with pace and energy. I smiled a few times at some witty lines, and enjoyed the link back to Thom E Gemcity and the pop culture references (War Games) but generally was left a little deflated.

Higher Education
bobcobb30115 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Not exactly a festive holiday episode or one worthy of a mid-season finale, but it was not a terrible episode by any means. Just not sure this lived up to the quality of episodes we usually get in this position on the annual TV calendar.

The case was a little bit bland. There was potential espionage, which almost always makes for good TV, but it got diverted a bit too much and too frequently with kids in college, fake kids in college and then bringing Delilah into the fold.

NCIS is surprisingly still watchable in its 20th season, but some episodes just are there for filler and nothing else and this was that.

Quite fun

Warning: Spoilers
There have been some bad episodes in the 20th season of "NCIS" - "Leave No Trace" felt like filler, "The Good Fighter" got very stupid. "Higher Education" though is one of the better episodes of this season. It's not great, but is quite fun at the end of the day.

Let's start with the good.

. The production values of the episode are great as usual. "Higher Education" is well-directed, the music fits the scenery and the acting's fine for the most part. It is so nice to see Margo Harshman as Delilia. She's a delight and has very good chemistry with Sean Murray. I really buy Delilia and McGee as a couple.

. The mystery, which is pretty complex agreed, is interesting. There are some good jokes here and there. Really enjoyed they brought back the idea of "Thom E. Gemcity".

But...

. Not all of the dialogue is good, some it feels rather awkward, especially at the beginning. Do agree too that parts of the mystery drag a bit and feel done in previous episodes. The solution was pretty predictable too.

Overall, a fine episode.

6/10 HK.
