Great start to a destroyed movie
vincepennykidd9 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
*Contains Spoilers*

This movie started out with such potential, your standard home invasion murderer movie but with a killer without a motive. The movie started out so strong, the killer, smart and sadistic planning carefully every move, eliminating the husband and quickly capturing the wife and tying her up. At this point, I am thinking, OK, here we go, time for this movie to set itself apart from the others of this type, and boy did it ever. The wife is absolutely without a doubt the dumbest character in any movie ever made. She escapes and gets a gun that was in a safe AND had a trigger lock on it, why there is a reason to have both, nobody knows, she moves quick and quiet down to the basement and starts digging through a tin of keys, doesn't even partially shut the door to block any sound, immediately drops the key and instead of picking it up and hiding to unlock the gun, she leaves the gun on the shelf and the key on the floor and hides in the room, the killer loses points here for not looking around the tiny room before going back upstairs. The wife now alone in the basement with the key and the gun should be able to easily unlock the gun, go upstairs quietly and shoot him, problem solved. But she does not. Wanting to maintain her title of biggest moron ever she sprints loudly up the stairs with the key in the lock but leaving it LOCKED!!!! wtf?!?! Obviously she is caught and cut on the leg losing the gun and locks herself in a room. More nonsense ensues and eventually she ends up on the floor battered, next to the still locked gun with the key in it while the killer, who is now catching up in stupidity, slowing picks out and admires a sword to kill her with, he comes back, she has (finally) unlocked the gun and proceeds to shoot twice, hitting him once in the next with a graze. He goes down slowly still holding the sword while she stands over him with 4 bullets left and refuses to shoot a man who is still holding a weapon and alive. She decides to stand really close, since apparently guns have a range of 3-4 feet and call the cops who she already called 45 minutes ago that hadn't shown up. While on the phone the killer is still alive and (shocker) cuts off her gun hand and then stabs her, kills her, gets up, changes clothes, and leaves.... It's like if they made her too smart it would've been a 45 minute movie because she passed up 2-3 easy chances to kill him and end it out of sheer stupidity

Elongated Short
Theo Robertson16 September 2013
Immediately after watching THE TORTURED a horror film whose main function relies upon a shock twist ending I caught this horror thriller entitled HOME SWEET HOME which also relies upon a shock twist ending . Despite the flaws to THE TORTURED it does feel nicely paced and structured but HSH suffers from being stretched out

The film opens with the camera voyeuristically roaming through the McAndrew house . The occupants aren't at home but an intruder is and spends the next twenty minutes walking around the house . Yes for twenty tedious minutes the audience are asked to watch a man walking around the inside of a house . Most relationships these days don't last twenty minutes so it's a chore watching twenty minutes of film where nothing happens and one wonders if the film is trying to kill it's audience through boredom . By the time the McAndrews do arrive home you might be beyond caring . That's if you're still conscious of course

The next hour of the film revolves around Sara McAndrew trying to escape the clutches of the masked intruder and being a horror film we're getting anything in the way of character motive or character development , we're asked to watch a woman in danger try and escape the hands of a masked menace . As I said it does try and have a twist surprise at the end but the rest of the film doesn't really have the legs to carry it that far and would have worked much better as a 15 minute short

ridiculous movie
osiristhreesevens14 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
your not gonna like this review...

this movie is completely and utterly ridiculous. im just continuing to watch it out of self torture.

here are some various stupid things that happen...

silent alarm gets tripped so a security calls round, sees all the lights on, knocks and calls out 15 times, no answer, rings the phone, no answer. OK, have a nice night see ya. i mean ffs.

there's a pistol in a safe on the top floor, but no it cant be that easy. it has to have a trigger lock. but it still cant be that easy, she has to sneak all the way down 2 staircases to get the key, which she instantly drops and so has to run and hide without picking it up. but then after some time she actually picks the key up so finally she has the gun and trigger lock key. slam dunk right? run upstairs gun in hand and blow the guy away. nope, she has to run upstairs without unlocking the trigger lock, and yep you guessed it, runs straight into him and gets the still trigger locked gun knocked out of her hand. she then runs upstairs and pushes a small dresser in front of a door but he is unable to even budge it??

and when she eventually shoots him in the friggin neck, he goes down and is nearly dead. but comes back to life and gets better and better, and even manages to stumble all his proper clothes back on and make a phone call? worse case of an actor acting shot I've ever seen.

Boring!

Can I give this a ZERO? Pointless...No story. Hardly any talking. Just a few jumps and lots of blood. What a waste of time. There's an hour an a half I'll never get back!

Home invasion made tasteless
Gonz4231 March 2013
I've just seen this movie today in Lyon during the (tremendous) "Hallucinations Collectives" festival, presented by the author David Morlet himself. The session promised to be pleasant and I watched it in good mood. But I eventually felt sorry for him because I've found nothing good in this movie ! The whole scenario is only a tiny short movie pitch. The very few characters have no personality, I had no single reason to get attached to these caricatures of normality. The bad guy has no motivation, except the usual thrill of impunity, easy way to provide free horror. But there is actually no horror here, nothing traumatic. Despite the "home invasion" subject, which carries very strong intimate fears, the directing provides no tension, no suspense, no surprise. There actually is a final twist, but evidences are sown several minutes ahead and spoil the thing. The overall treatment is sooo slow that you really have plenty of time to think about this ending ! Needless to say I found no second degree, no subtext, no fantasy or message of any kind. In a few words, to me this movie is bad and cheap.

Intriguing take on the "Home Invasion" Genre
stsinger26 May 2013
"Home Sweet Home" is nice take on the "Home Invasion" genre. The film is structured quite differently than most other horror films. The beginning of this film is a lengthy and quite creepy sequence where the villain breaks into the home, checks it out, and settles in for the evening. There is real tension for the return of the owners and they do show up -- a young married couple coming home after an evening at the theater. They settle in briefly and then the uninvited guest makes his appearance known...

"Home Sweet Home" is way more effective than you'd expect. Part of it is the structure -- unlike many horror film, it doesn't spend 45 minutes making us try to know the victims. I know filmmakers to this in an attempt to make us like the victims and not want bad things to happen to them, but all too often it just makes them annoying. This film does it right -- the entire home invasion concept is enough to make us fear for the couple, and when they prove, after a brief time, to be a pleasant enough couple then BAM! It's on!

Lots to like about this flick. Unlike so many horror films, this film is well-lit and you can clearly see everything that is happening. The acting is outstanding all around. Much of the film is centered around the psycho versus the wife, and the actors nail it. Shaun Benson, in a virtually silent role, is creepy as the invader. And Meghan Heffern is wonderful as the terrorized wife -- you can really feel the fear. Many of the questions that you think are going to be left dangling are answered in a clever ending, so that means that from its creepy unconventional beginning to its shocking ending "Home Sweet Home" is a success.

Greatest flick ever? Nope. But definitely worth checking out.

Horrible movie--do not waste your time.
tanya-eisen28 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
****CONTAINS SPOILERS*****

Wasted half the movie with just giving us a tour of the house. After that all he did was kill two people. End of story.

Oh....and it ended up being the sheriff. Wasn't even a twist cause we didn't even know what the sheriff looked like.

DO NOT WATCH. It's like a middle school movie project.

I was very disappointed with the acting as well. Even when someone got hurt they didn't even scream. Clearly that is not a good horror movie.

If I had gotten this movie for free I wouldn't be writing such a bad review but the fact that I paid money made it even worse. How could anyone write a good review for this movie. So misleading.

home invasion gone wrong
arelyborderez13 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Please do not watch this movie. It was a waste of time. Like literally it got me so worked up that i wrote a review. creepy guy kills couple for no reason like they don't a give a reason what so ever for why his actively killing these white people. the victims you find yourself hoping they die quicker because they are just that boring. The killer has no point. he literally takes his time walking in the house until the family gets home. even then it uses cheap scare tactics to try suspense. The music at the end makes no sense its starts getting all dramatic. Bottom line don't watch it. Its not funny or scary or thrilling its lame. the actors i feel sorry for them.

sometimes a basic idea can be turned into a unique horror movie.
roarshack806 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
the only negative thing i can say about Home Sweet Home, is the title could easily turn people away from the basic premise of what it's about. the basic premise being a 'home invasion' type of deal.

aside from that, this movie is very similar to countless movies about home invasion with one exception: IT'S WELL MADE.

Home Sweet Home falls between the cracks because people just assume that they've seen movies like it a million times. it could also be discarded by some people due to the fact they were hoping to see the crazy man do all sorts of sadistic things to the couple whose home is being invaded. that really just means they want to see a plausible horror premise that involves tacky tricks for the entirety of the movie.

this is something i like to refer to as a "slice of life" kind of movie. which is suitable for some horror movies. there isn't always a need for some horror movies to touch on too much of a background. it gives a more of a sporadic feel when the horror begins from the get go.

if you've taken the time to check up on this via IMDb, then i'm not giving anything away when i say Home Sweet Home has a very, very small cast of characters. and because of that (when handled in a creative way) it really creates a sense of isolation. there isn't fifty pointless story lines going on. it helps focus on the dynamics of the characters and what's going on around them.

'less is more' can truly be applied to this movie when it comes to actual horror. when i say Home Sweet Home has a familiar-type of storyline, i don't mean that in a bad way. home invasion COULD happen to you. and it happens to people every day. sometimes, a good horror movie can be made when just the right amount of imagination bumps 'likely' to 'unlikely' making for a good horror story. and Home Sweet Home nails it the whole way through.

BAD MOVIE - Logic does NOT make sense
tylerfranzen10 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The writer/directer is horrible, either the girl is the stupidest person alive(well dead now because she had no intelligence at all) or she wants to die because her logic when handling the gun that was stored in the house makes no sense at all..... she has a chance to kill him and decides that its smarter to rush him with the gun trigger still locked... even though she could have easily unlocked it downstairs where she was safe... but no she had to run upstairs BEFORE she unlocked it. makes no sense at all. Although the mask was pretty unique and the movie did have a twist at the end but the killer had no motivation at all. NONE whatsoever.

Great
arfdawg-118 February 2014
A young married couple comes home from a date night to discover that they are imprisoned in their own house with a methodical killer inside.

Very slow build up while the dude is alone in the house. Directed so that you don't see his face as he roams from room to room getting the lay of the land.

The entire front end is creepy. Then the people come home and the tension is high. Especially the entire scene where the wife is in the shower.T this point we were about a little more than a third into the film so I wondered where the movie was going to take us when mommy gets in the cheerleader outfit.

Let's just say it doesn't go well.

Much of the last quarter of the film is relatively predictable. And how could it be otherwise? It's hard to pull off this kind of film in a unique way. But they get points for trying. And guess what? They pull off the surprise ending of the century.

American Psycho meets Halloween
bookwormdrews22 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
What a creepy movie! This is different than a lot of horror movies because it opens on the killer, who is already in the unoccupied home. It follows his elaborate preparation ritual where, much like Dexter, he turns the entire house into a kill-room. His American Psycho-esque preparation, from putting on his kill-suit and smearing the cruddiest, nastiest vaseline on his hair (to prevent loose hairs from falling?) really shows the killer's experience, and desire NOT to get caught. I love the mask that he wears, much like Michael Myers, that dehumanizes him. The actor does a lot of great physical stuff in a mostly-silent role, much like a mime, and he really makes the most of his time on screen. Once the husband and wife return home, the movie kicks into high gear and the tension, and blood loss, kicks into high gear. The movie has a great twist-ending that I won't spoil, but I admit I saw it coming about ten minutes before it happened. Great movie!

Movie is Not Good
jetsfanatic-4073121 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Dumbest victims, especially the wife. Dumbest security guard and a killer with absolutely no motive. How the wife doesn't unlock the gun while still in the basement makes no sense. Why she recklessly runs up the basement steps with a locked gun makes no sense. Why when finally given the opportunity to kill the killer she instead stands vulnerable right next to him allowing him to stab her makes no sense. Really just a bad movie!!!

Uniquely terrible..please give it a miss.
pratima3473 August 2013
I read a few good reviews about this one and decided to watch it. Now I want those 80 minutes of my life back..those 80 minutes that I spent on watching the disaster of a movie, which is Home sweet home. The beginning shows a mysterious man ,who is the invader and whose face is revealed only in the end, that too for a split second. The beginning itself drags for so long..if I'd known this earlier,I'd taken a quick nap through it. You feel the pressure build up a bit, then you are on the border of getting bored, then you are just plain bored..and even then, the movie is still dragging towards some "twist". An hour into the movie, and then you see some action, which is quite horrible ,but by then, you are so fed up,you don't care. There's "the" twist in the end,but I don't think even the actors cared about that one. It tries to give an art house film feel and that too,a boring one and yes,it succeeds at that.

What A Stinkeroo
clintstevens29 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Some reviewers liked this pile of doo-doo? Really? There is no reason whatsoever this movie should have ever seen the light of day. Here is a quick synopsis so you'll be spared wasting your time. Bad guy breaks in. Dons mask and jumpsuit. Makes himself at home. Couple comes home. Man gets blindsided with a golf club. Woman is tied to a radiator, and demands to see her husband. Bad guy scalps husband, evidently killing him. Woman gets free, finds husband's gun, shoots bad guy in neck. Bad guy gets husband's sword, cuts off woman's hand, still bleeding profusely, bad guy stabs wife repeatedly, killing her. Bad guy takes off jumpsuit and mask, calls police department to report death of 2 people, dons his sheriff's badge and waits for the cops. That's it. You're welcome.

absolutely pointless waste of time
sonofabit12 September 2016
I'm the kind of viewer who can suspend disbelief for even the worst of movies, as long as there is SOME kind of redeeming quality by the end...

there was absolutely none in this utter time waster.

it seems to attempt to create "tension" by dragging out useless scenes throughout the entire movie, and just creates a frustrating experience, where even the simplest scene takes like 15 minutes to get through.

the infuriating pacing set in the intro does not improve or pay off in any way, so if you hate it by the first few minutes, don't bother wasting any more of your time; it does not get ANY better.

not the worst movie ever made, but certainly the worst movie I've seen in at least the last two years.

Surprisingly entertaining with a Sweet Ending
ihearthorrorfilm22 May 2013
The first 20 minutes of this film are incredibly tasteful. I can't stress how perfect the shots and camera angles are. As you watch, you can feel the fear building up inside you. The stress of the situation just completely floods your brain as you watch and wait for whatever your imagination can come up with. And then, all of a sudden, I saw the cheerleading outfit. I started to remember the trailer I posted for this film about a month ago and my excitement for fear quickly faded. But I kept watching… First off, the dude's mask, not gonna lie, pretty creepy. Secondly, the scenes with the killer doing his thing, slowly torturing and humiliating his victims were pretty terrifying. So I kept watching and to my surprise, an ending that knocked me right off my feet. I shook my head, shrugged my shoulders and realized I could only say one thing. You can't judge a film by its trailer. Home Sweet Home is surprisingly a good little indie thriller/horror that definitely deserves a little attention.

Doll..very doll
dctr66616 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
OK, no one is waiting for this kind of movie to win an Oscar...Thst's not the idea...but...man...give me a break...this is boring to the bone... First of all, "home invasion" script was made and remade lots and lots of times, with some great results...this one is boring, doll...good for those who have trouble sleeping at night...

Everything is stupid...the plot, the killer (there's no logic for the cop being the killer...)...there's no history, no character development... There0s only a psycho, who happens to be the cop, that seals every window in the house, and tortures psychologically and physically the young couple... No reason...only because he wanted to... Complete waste of time...

Finally A Film About A Villain Who Wins
FilmMan4720 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
we all have seen horror films that have a cheesy storyline sex scenes and usual predictable bad ending & comedy here the case is different its not about the hero or heroine its about a villain who actually have no background character or motive in the end its seen he is wearing a sheriff badge but one can assume he kills for fun and its makes you think more where this guy came from why would he do such thing its got potential to be a franchise but thats just me i liked it for what it was nothing more.

the plot:a couple comes back to their house and discover there is a killer hiding inside who just wants to kill them.

the cast:Megan Heffen plays Sara a lovely wife who tries hard to escape from the bad guys grip but fails.

keep in mind that there is another film called home sweet home with a woman taking revenge for someone getting inside her home both films are released in 2013 so if made a little confusion.

films like these should be appreciated its a low budget film and quite underrated.

overall home sweet home 2013 is a good film where villain is the hero it depends how you look at it my rating is 7/10:Recommended.

Pretty shell of a movie - but just a rotten egg inside
specialuse11712 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
First the movie looked good, nice lighting, camera movement, and no damn shaky camera. But that is all the good I can say. Acting was a little above amateur middle school, especially the lead female. Making cutesy faces to the camera is not acting. The other actors really had limited screen time made the least of it. The cat was the best actor. The plot was just stupid and transparent. Clichés are OK in a movie if done right but even the clichés were awful in this one. SPOILERS - Female standing over the man with a loaded gun while he has a long sword. A person would either run away or shoot again or go see if she can help someone else. The entire basement scene was overly stupid. Man is upstairs with no way to come down except for stairs. You have a gun. So keep the lock on the gun and go up, no run up the stairs. This movie was really a waste of time. It cam be summed up with the observation of stressing the female in a cheerleader outfit - pretty enticing covering but empty underneath. Just like the movie. To the director - keep your day job.

Very well done, and lots of little details
snipertrr811 January 2014
Lot of people pick on this movie because its low budget and has a small cast. It is definitely not as bloody as a lot of horror flicks, but the attention to detail is there if you like crime stuff. As far as spooky movies go, most gory horror movies don't do much for me, but this one is well acted, has good intensity and buildup. Damn good movie in my book. The start of the movie is kind of slow, but it needs to be to get the plot set up just right. All the characters were well thought out and played their rolls well. Props were good, and the set was very well done, it really made you feel like you were in the house. Definitely recommended.

Not as bad as people say. But still not the best.
lisitsincaleb-481226 August 2019
First off I need to say this, the cinematography is the best part of this movie. It's honestly better then it needed to be. The movie starts off with a bunch of annoying fake jump scares but they seem to die down and the real horror starts at the mid point. The gore is well done. The acting is fine for slasher standards. Overall, and okay horror film that's a good time burner.

I can't believe the high ratings!
cchornomud-755-1435863 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The beginning is promising. A lot of suspense is created in the opening. It's very creepy and you feel almost voyeuristic traveling through the couples house with the creepy soon to be masked man. Some of the scenes are really great like the angle that they show the masked man when he firsts put on his mask.

There is zero plot.... **Spoiler alert***

The husband is maimed immediately. He then half assedly tortures the wife. He asphyxiates her a couple of times. He randomly puts lipstick on her. The wife is borderline retarded. She openly walks around when she knows the killer is looking for her. She also is safely nestled in her sons room and rather than staying there meanders to the front door which has been removed from its hinges...yeah the killer is just gonna let you go... The movie moves extremely slowly and the climax stinks. There is no real resolution or clarifying of the motives at the end of the movie. I was not impressed. The plot also has major flaws. Like the security company stops by her house? And knocks on the door? And then says OK, we're going to call the police. Apparently there is only one police officer in the whatever city they live in. Stupid.

I cheered at the end
LaverneandShirleysucks14 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
After a very slow start, the film gets going with the invasion. but It took 45 minutes to reach that point and I think it should've been half that time. But once the invasion starts, things do pick up quickly. The woman being terrorized though was clearly targeted by the psycho for her complete stupidity. But then again, wouldn't a killer want a little more challenge than this imbecile if he's just killing for sport? I enjoyed it, but was so frustrated by the idiotic choices of the woman that by the end, I cheered at her demise. She was just too stupid to live. I mean, if you're trapped in an upstairs bedroom and psycho killer is trying to break down the door, for the love of God, open those shutters and break open the window and jump the heck out. Second floors in homes aren't that high! Silly, stupid woman. And don't even get me started on the loaded gun she had. Ugh!
