Do you like your Santa to wield a flamethrower?
culturedleftpeg5 December 2012
With the festive period now upon us, it's the time of year to bring out those films that are best watched at Christmas time. You've got Home Alone, The Muppets Christmas Carol, Scrooged, Miracle on 34th Street, It's A Wonderful Life, The Empire Strikes Back, Batman Returns, Bad Santa and a slew of others that give that special festive feeling. Quite how much of a festive feeling the last three in that list give to people is open to debate, but they're regularly on my list of Christmas viewing. One thing that you don't see that much of these days, bar 2006′s Black Christmas, is festive horror films. With the release of Silent Night, we have another festive slasher to add to this small collection.

Loosely based on 1984′s Silent Night, Deadly Night, the film tells the story of a murderous Santa on a killing spree on Christmas Eve in a small American town. Complete with classic tag-line – "He knows if you've been naughty" - the film is an unashamedly kitsch, cheesy, brutal hark back to the days of the traditional slasher flick. The kills come thick and fast, with Santa showing no remorse to those that have been naughty in his eyes. Each kill is different to the others, with the brutality and gore plentiful. Ol' Saint Nicholas uses a variety of weapons – an axe, hatchet, knife, flame thrower, a wood chipper (hey, Fargo!), deer antlers and Christmas lights amongst others – as he tears his way through his naughty list. Out to stop him is the local Sheriff's department, with Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange, Gangster No 1, Rob Zombie's Halloween) in the role of Sheriff Cooper. Cooper's team is made up of Jaime King (Sin City, The Tripper, The Spirit), Ellen Wong (Scott Pilgrim vs The World) and Brendan Fehr (Roswell High, CSI: Miami). Early on in the film, Jaime King's Aubrey Bradimore is firmly established as the lead of the piece, with the nervous, unsure of herself Bradimore leading the hunt to track down the dastardly Santa.

To complicate matters, with the film being set on Christmas Eve, there are Santas everywhere. The small town has a seemingly endless amount of people dressed up as Kris Kringle, most of them having worked as Santa for the festive period and most of them having an attitude. One such Father Christmas is played by the naturally charismatic Donal Logue (Grounded For Life, Blade, Shark Night 3D). Logue plays the part of a blunt, aggressively honest, down-on-Christmas Santa. Along with Malcolm McDowell, he chews up every scene that he's in. With McDowell, it's a very fine line between whether I like his performance or if it's just horrendous. As a McDowell fan, I'm inclined to lean towards the former. The problem is his delivery and his accent; at times he sounds English, at other times he sounds English with a far too forced American twang. Hearing him deliver 'ass' and 'garbage' just sounds wrong. That said, the same could be noted of his performance as Sam Loomis in Rob Zombie's visions of Halloween and Halloween II. It also doesn't help that some of the lines that McDowell's Sheriff Cooper comes out with are just pure unadulterated, cheesy one liners. At first they sound cringeworthy, but they get better as the film goes on. That may be down to the fact that I grew up on action films riddled with embarrassingly bad one liners. I'd fully understand if others found this to be a major annoyance though.

So, with the majority of the dialogue and performances seemingly tongue-in-cheek, the film could be nothing more than a fun, gory, Christmas slaughter ride. The direction by Steven C. Miller (Scream of the Banshee, The Aggression Scale) is actually surprising for a film of this standard. At times, the direction is fresh, crisp and detailed – much like a Christmas night. There's also a well utilised festive soundtrack to accompany the bloodsplattering action. Jaime King in the lead role is sympathetic and fine for what she needs to be. The performance doesn't set the world alight, but it gets the job done. In fairness to King, she does seem to be one of the few that is playing the film straight. It's just a shame for her that the rest of the cast are hamming it up. There's also the slight problem of finding yourself cheering on Santa at times, especially when it comes to a slimy, perverted man of the clergy that he takes out.

Personally, I like that the film is a little tongue-in-cheek. At times, particularly with the relatively innovative deaths and the gore used, the film gives an almost Troma-lite feel. Anybody familiar with myself or my interest in film knows where I stand on Troma, so that is another plus point for Silent Night.

If you're expecting a tension filled masterclass of suspense, Silent Night is not the film for you. Silent Night is not to Christmas what John Carpenter's Halloween is to Halloween. However, if you're after a unique, sinister, gory, festive film to kill 90 minutes, then this film fits the bill perfectly. In regards to the original, this is a remake in the very loosest of terms. There are a few nods to the original film here and there, such as the catatonic grandparent, but little else apart from the big bearded fella in the red suit.

Silent Night is a throwaway film in the best possible way. It's the type of film that you can just pop on without having to engage your brain. If you like your ho-ho-horror (bad Christmas pun) bloody, to the point, cheesy and with a dark sense of humour then I'd recommend Silent Night for at least a one-off viewing. For those that go into this with an open mind, I give this festive slasher a respectable 6 out of 10 stars.

Once the night do become silent, this movie will not linger on...
paul_haakonsen1 December 2012
I was initially lured in by the somewhat odd cover for this movie; having a strange-looking Santa there with a flamethrower. If that is not an eye-catcher, then I don't know what it.

Having seen the movie now, I somewhat sit here and wonder where the horror in the movie vanished off to, because this movie was anything but scary. And if anything, then the older movies in the same genre, such as "Silent Night, Deadly Night" or "Black Christmas" were actually more entertaining than this 2012 movie.

The story in "Silent Night" is about a mysterious and masked person dressed up as Santa Claws who goes on a killing spree in a small town during the Christmas holidays. And it is up to the local police force to bring an end to the murderous rampage.

Story-wise, it wasn't the most interesting of movies, as it was all something that basically had been seen before in other movies. That being said, I am not saying that it is all bad, because the movie does manage to entertain from the very start and up to the end. Sure, there were some questionable moments and goofy parts to the movie, but all in all, it did manage to entertain. However, this movie is not likely going to become a Christmas classic such as "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" is, nor is it the type of movie that you will most likely ever watch again after having seen it once.

If you enjoy horror movies, then "Silent Night" is not the best of choices, but there are far worse movies available.

Modern Slashers Versus 1980s Slashers? Not the Same.
gavin69422 December 2012
The police force of a remote Midwestern town search for a killer Santa Claus who is picking off citizens on Christmas Eve.

First of all, let me get this off my chest: the film takes place in the Midwest on Christmas Eve and there is not one flake of snow... and the grass is still green. Even when we have no snow on Christmas (rare, but possible) the grass is quite dead... not sure what these people were thinking.

And second, calling this a "loose remake" of the 1980s slasher "Silent Night, Deadly Night" seems to be just a way to get around the fact the idea of a killer Santa has already been done. The films have practically nothing in common beyond the title... and could be treated as completely unrelated without anyone noticing.

But comparing a 2012 slasher to a 1980s slasher is unfair from the start. The styles are different, the culture is different. And frankly, for as bad as most slashers are these days (particularly the remakes) this one holds up surprisingly well. We like seeing Santa chase people down, we love the ax... and we really love the wood chipper. Sure, I still prefer practical effects, but they did not go overboard on the CG like they could have.

Great practical effects, but clunky execution
wormtheace1 December 2012
Let me get this out of the way. I had not seen the original "Silent Night, Deadly Night" until last week. I am a huge horror fan and this one kind of slipped under my radar. The original is by itself pretty bad. The acting is bad and any shades of a good horror movie are lost in the mess of bad acting and nonsensical plot. This movie attempt to rectify the problems with the original by establishing a much simpler storyline. The kills are there for sure. The practical effects are for the most part pretty good. It's a welcome sign to see a horror film that attempts to take full advantage of the advances in practicals. There are some cool callbacks to the original and its sequel while at the same time the film separates itself from the original series. The major issue with the film is that it's just not very exciting. Kills happen, and they are cool, but there is just no tension built. Even though the storyline has been slimmed down compared to the original, it feels like they missed a lot of opportunities to develop some three-dimensional characters. Everyone is just kind of there. Malcolm McDowell is the weakest part of the movie. I'm not sure when he decided to start playing every character the same, but his crazy old man routine is getting stale. Jamie King is mostly okay. We really don't much of a back story on her character and her eventual transformation is kind of out of left field. Donal Logue is probably the best thing in the movie, but his character is also just another throw in. It's a weird movie because it looks professional enough to be a wide release movie, but the holes in the film are just too wide to overcome. All and all it's a fine rental if you have 90 minutes to waste, but it certainly doesn't break any new ground. The original is certainly not hallowed ground. It's the kind of movie that just begs to be remade. I'm fine with what we ended up with. This isn't The Exorcist, The Thing, or Halloween so I'm not going to go off the deep end over a classic being remade.

A nutter dressed as Santa Claus is roaming around some sleepy town in America wasting people who have been naughty (starting with an adulterer and her lover), and it's up to deputy whats-her-name and grumpy police chief Malcolm McDowell to sort him out.

I was getting fed up with slasher movies since they, at their worst, are just the same things you've seen over and over again (see Bunnyman massacre, Mask Maker etc). Silent Night IS the same sort of thing you've seen before, but it's really well made, contains actual tension, and is a beautiful film to look at.

Of course, there are plenty of undesirable folk for our killer Claus to perforate, from the bratty kid to the pervy priest to the pornographers, and you've got plenty of gore to go with it too (including a head split in two with an axe and someone getting fed into a woodchipper feet first). I'm no worshipper of Malcolm McDowell but here he's pretty funny as the ignorant police chief who won't listen to his deputy. "Don't put avacado on the burger" indeed.

Just shows that a good slasher film can be made if people can be arsed.

Good Gore Bad Script
willis0661 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Yea not much to say here. Good gore some good Kill scenes. Cool looking Killer Santa Not much else. Sad to see this movie get put into production when way more plausible scripts are left on the shelf.

As I watched this movie I kept thinking back to the original and to be honest for a really low budget cheesy movie as the original was I kept thinking to myself how much better it is than this remake.

So to end this if your a gore fan and you want to waste an hour and a half on a new movie by all means but i'd suggest not wasting much or any money to do so.

all others avoid.

NOW SPOILERS

CMON PPl who praise this film! Terrible acting with good actors in the roles (or at least decent actors in the roles) Totally unplauseable scenes IE. Naked woman escaping through window running down street stark naked bloody screaming and instead of plausibly staying on a street she decides to run into a field with a woodchipper!!!! Terribly written is all that needs to be said to that Malcolm Mcdowells death was stupid your telling me he couldn't shoot santa before santa got the flamethrower off Please... I love horror movies and consider myself a Horror Geek but I need my movie to make sense or be plausible to some degree I can let certain things go but too much and the movie can suck right away. There are a lot more implauable scenes Little Girl Kill, How Santa Killer knows ppl are sinners? etc etc etc but no need to go through all of them

As I said good gore but no scary scenes period none! no pop out moments no killer stalking victims in dark corridors with eerie music everything is done with action music and in daylight mostly

Horribly developed characters what the heck was Donal Logue even doing in the movie? Killer was very little Developed to.

I could go on but really do I need to..

I expected a lot more from this movie. Yes these quality films upset me cause it will be a big renter and a big let down to a lot of people. and these are the kinds of movies that gets us only PG rated horror because big studio's wont shell out money on R horror cause they don't get big money at theatres (Mainly because adults see trash like this and think they are not going to get a quality film which in most cases they are right) and kids if allowed in will go see anything and pay. So praise it but its like the early 90's the death of horror. Thank god for foreign horror right now.. Thanks

old school slasher
trashgang6 December 2012
I have seen a lot of Steven C. Miller flicks and I liked them although they mostly got bad reviews. Automaton Transfusion (2006) and Cry Of The Banshee (2011) are a few examples.

Silent Night is another horror made by Steven and again some will hate it. The reason is simple, it's a throwback to the slasher era. That means a few things, a lot of blah blah and a few nasty killings. And that's exactly what this film delivering. Don't think that you will see a flashy horror like made nowadays with excellent CGI effects, no this is really a old school slasher and one with a season theme.

Malcolm McDowell is in it and he really plays the pain in the *ss copper. That adds something toward this flick. And it's really one for the boys because it do has gratuitous nudity for a few minutes with a girl running around with bare breasts. The first killing I saw i thought ooo nooo CGI blood but later on it becomes rougher and even a bit gory.

It doesn't add anything to the genre but it's a great slasher for the older geeks to see, I'm sure you are going to pick up the other Santa slashers.

good not great, bad but not terrible
buckeyefanohiostate1 December 2022
Okay 1st off i have to say the kills in this movie are done pretty well but may be a bit much for some who are not into overly grosome kills ex like the kills from old school slashers like Friday the 13th or Fredy! This movie follows alot of the horror movie tropes like ppl making the stupidest decions ever that no real person would ever make but if you can over look that and some of the B movie plot holes there can be some fun! I love christmas horror movies to turn a holiday about love giving and family and turning it into a nightmare is always fun to see how the world they build for the characters is always interesting to me. Malcom Mcdowell is way over the top not to the point of Nic cage but sometimes he had me laughing thinking there is no way the was the best take lol the way the characters act and talk to each other sometimes is way too fake and even pulls you out of the movie cause its just not how a real person would act lol. When it does happen i just had to remind my self its a B movie! Over all i think this could have been a really fun movie but as is id say its just your avg scary movie not good but not bad either.

Remake probably sounded better than sequel.
shaun830512 December 2020
Silent Night is technically a remake of Silent Night, Deadly Night though it could have easily been Silent Night, Deadly Night 6 and have been just as effective. That said this movie is still a bloody good time that was better than expected.

Silent Night is about a killer Santa who is unleashing his wrath on Christmas Eve. It's up to the local law enforcement to stop him.

Overall Silent Night is a fun movie. It's got a lot of violence and gore, moves at a good pace, and pays homage to the first two films. Overall if you want a fun Christmas slasher, check it out.

A bearded standard slasher.
parry_na9 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
A small American town pays host one Christmas to a maniac dressed as Santa Claus. Rather like Salem's Lot, this town is frequented by often very flawed characters who one by one, succumb to terrifically staged, grisly fates.

My feeling at the beginning was that Sheriff James Cooper, played by the mighty Malcolm McDowell, who often seemed to magically turn up at the scene of the various crime, was somehow linked to the malevolent Claus. To cast McDowell as a mere Sheriff seemed unlikely to me. Maybe I was right?

Deputy Aubrey Bradimore (Jaime King) is the unfortunate who is seconded to the spree. Anytime any of the townsfolk are 'naughty' - and there are plenty who are - it seems Father Christmas isn't far behind. You can hear his heavy breathing behind his improvised, bearded mask.

The running time is made up of sinners hiding behind a veneer of respectability, suspected by none except Santa. This makes him a kind of red-hatted avenging spirit. The premise and outrageous killings are over-the-top and often quite silly, and yet this remake of the 1984 'Silent Night, Deadly Night' weaves in several plot moments from the real-life 2008 Covina massacre.

Director Steven C. Miller and writer Jayson Rothwell ensure that events are staged in a very television-drama style, and as such, the minor indiscretions of the characters have a soap-opera feel about them. For the ongoing fascination for a truly Bad Santa, this is enjoyable, but a fairly standard slasher.

In the mood for a great horror film who respects the genre and also delivers scares and cheese of the 80's slasher... check this out. it's a fun ride.
simpletreatment232 December 2012
oh wow. Steven C Miller's Silent Night (2012) was everything I wanted from a slasher film and more. I can't begin to tell you how much I loved this film. It's spot on with everything and really both embraces the cheese of the 80's but also keeps it scary. This is one of the rare remakes that is better then the original in every way.

Having seen the infamous original Silent Night, Deadly Night awhile back ago, I wasn't that impressed. It was a decent twisted tale but it didn't really live up to the hype. More could have been done and here the film makers have fully honored the original and not only build their own story on it but told it better. I have to give director, Steven C Miller a lot of respect not just as a horror fan but also as a film maker. I loved the fact that he actually made it scary. So little horror films, and even fewer slasher films, remember that not all the 80's slasher films were cheesy.

This film played it real and raw. I loved the fact that it looked like a real film. It was really well acted, well shot (loved the camera work and framing) and pitch perfect. Miller comes off as a real lover of horror and respects it, which is why this film works so well. Even though they play a lot of the horror in a realistic way... he still manages to give us outlandish death scenes, great gore, nudity and wonderful homages to the original. I don't want to give it away but if your lover of the original two films then you will catch them. I sure did and I screamed with joy because a lot of the film makers who do horror remakes, even more the ones who aren't horror fans, like to come off as snobbish when it comes to the original and Miller instead embraces them.

This film also works because it's not a retelling of the original film, instead it uses the original as a springboard to do their own version of the concept and in a lot of ways it stays really more true to the original's tone. Jamie King and Donal Logue really broke out for me acting wise because both delivered performances that really made their characters feel like real people with real emotions... that's rare in today's horror films. On the campy side, have to love Malcolm McDowell who totally hams up her performance in a great way. His character provides some great comic moments and really helps to remind us not to take this film too seriously and to have fun with it.

Silent Night is going to be high on my list of favorite films not just because I totally loved it as a film but also as an inspiration for me, as someone who wants to make these kind of films. This is a great example of why some films do need to be remade by people who love respect the genre and love it.

Good reboot of the old classic!!!
zombie19732 December 2012
Now this is not a straight forward remake of SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT, but it does pay homage in a few scenes, if you remember how Linnea Quigley dies in the original you'll know what i mean....its a solid film based on its own merit and storyline, some great gore and death scenes, and good acting by the most of the cast..unfortunately apart from Malcolm Mcdowell, who plays the sheriff, terrible dialogue and terrible acting, that was the only issue i had with it, because all round a great seasonal slasher, this will definitely be on the slasher/ horror list to watch every Christmas with all the rest, BLACK Christmas, Don't OPEN TILL Christmas, Christmas EVIL, SANTA CLAWS, THE Christmas SEASON MASSACRE, GREMLINS, SILENT NIGHT BLOODY NIGHT, BLACK XMAS, SINT (SAINT). Watch it, enjoy it.

A Modern Remake of Silent Night, Deadly Night is a Huge Mess
miguelangelo-225634 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
In 1984, Silent Night, Deadly Night was a success cause controversy because angry parents didn't like see a killer Santa Claus in a horror movie. It a overrated movie, but still is a O.K. picture. A remake was release in 2012, make many mistakes like a very boring and sad main character, Aubrey Bradimore and others not likable characters.

Other major issue in modern remake of classic horror, wasted too much time explain their reasons for being villains. Should waste time in creating a very good bad guy that explain him. Reason that most of people like villains in horror because they are played by good actors or actresses in a good history which is full of suspenseful scenes and likable supporting characters.

After watching ending, i was confused because history of killer is that he saw his dad being killing by a police officer, father of main character, because movie shows son having a burn scars that doesn't make sense he wasn't burn in face, that happened to his father not himself. Other thing, why killer kill random people before killing man who killed his daddy?

Reason that make his father want to kill everyone who being bad in Christmas because his wife is cheating and leaving him. Original gives a much better explanation,Billy saw his parents being killing and was abused by nuns for years, they always keep says to him that doing bad things is wrong and that why is being punched that why is killing people who is doing bad things.

If you wanna see a good Christmas horror movies, watch Black Christmas(1974),Christmas Evil(1980)and original Silent Night, Deadly Night(1984).

High on Kills, Low on Scares
skorkk13 December 2012
If the one and only thing you need to see in a slasher movie to find it enjoyable is plenty of graphic kills then you'll have a good time watching Silent Night. Someone gets bumped off literally every five-ten minutes, and yes the kills are brutal and gory.

However, if you like to see even the tiniest amount of excitement, scares, tension, character development or decent humour then look elsewhere.

The killer Santa here only murders people that he deems are "naughty". Now this is a simple idea, but one that could have worked quite well with some proper character and plot development that left us guessing who was naughty and who was nice. Instead what we get is a shower of one dimensional arseholes who are made out to be so extremely unlikeable that they simply become a set of caricatures. As a result of this we know who's going to get offed the second they appear on screen and we also don't care.

Another flaw is that the tone of this movie is all over the place. It desperately tries to be dark and eerie and occasionally it succeeds, but then the few attempts at humour are so OTT that it seems like the movie is making fun of itself. The director should have just abandoned any attempts at injecting bits of comedy into the plot because there were too many moments throughout where you're wondering what's actually supposed to be funny and what's just unintentionally hilarious! The main saving grace of the movie that stops it from being a complete stinker is the acting from Jaime King. She really does give a terrific performance and I sincerely hope that she gets to reach a wider audience in the future.

So in the end all you have here is a set extremely unrelateable and unlikeable characters in the most predictable storyline you could imagine. You'll basically just sit there waiting for the next person to die and won't care about anything else going on in the movie. The fact that the kills are slightly varied and inventive is what stops this from being a complete borefest.

Deck the halls with burnt up bodies, fa la la la la, la la la la!
Hey_Sweden16 December 2012
A pretty straightforward remake of the sicko seasonal 1984 classic "Silent Night, Deadly Night", this is all just insane enough, mean-spirited enough, and sadistic enough, to tickle genre fans looking for a no-fooling-around good time. Filmed in my own home province of Manitoba, in Canada, it's actually set in Wisconsin, as a demented moralizer dressed in Santa Claus garb is hellbent on punishing the naughty - insufferable brats, pornographers, slutty teens, everyone is fair game. A young police deputy (the lovely Jaime King) who's not sure she's cut out to be an officer of the law is among those following the mutilated corpses that Psycho Santa is leaving in his wake. Die hard horror fans will relish the high body count and the plethora of practical gore; digital bloodshed is kept to a minimum. They'll also be happy with the amount of female skin on display; Courtney-Jane White, playing Tiffany, is a real looker, but it's Cortney Palm as porno actress Maria who delivers a pleasing dose of extended gratuitous nudity. Palm also figures in what has to be the highlight of the piece. I won't say too much, but let's just say it's similar to something that happens in the Coen brothers' "Fargo". Commendably, none of this is ever played TOO seriously, and fans of the original "Silent Night, Deadly Night" parts 1 and 2 will love the nods to memorable sequences and lines from those two films. This makes for good no-brainer entertainment, and it's done with a reasonable amount of slickness; note the lighting and the atmospheric quality of the final showdown with Aubrey and the killer. It's also worth a mention how the filmmakers are willing to slaughter the younger members of the cast. Director Steven C. Miller keeps the action flowing, and the cast gives this a great effort. King, who'd pulled remake duty in "My Bloody Valentine 3-D" as well, is winning in the lead, and veteran Malcolm McDowell is a total hoot as her macho, posturing sheriff. Donal Logue as cynical Santa performer Jim, Ellen Wong as dispatcher Brenda, Lisa Marie as Mrs. Morwood, and Brendan Fehr as ill-fated deputy Jordan round out a good group of actors. The only real complaint on this viewers' part is that there's no wintertime feel to any of this. Would it have killed the filmmakers to at least have SOME snow on the ground? Overall, though, not bad. Seven out of 10.

Boring, crappy D list slasher
salmineo6 November 2013
I really wanted to at least enjoy this movie. This sort of/VERY loose re- boot of the infamous 1984 slasher, "Silent Night, Deadly night". Even if it was a "so bad it's good" kind of a film would have been OK. But this ultra low-budget crap-fest is just plain awful. Lots of scenes are filmed with a shaky camera. Almost like a youtube video filmed by a crack-head. Really bad acting by every single actor here. Malcom McDowel is officially in the "bottom-feeder D list club." The FX are a joke. And the movie stumbles with plot holes galore with a terrible pace. Really boring. Real pointless. A waste of time for all. Avoid it. Don't be curious. It's just a piece of crap.

One of the best
MikesIDhasbeentaken9 December 2020
It's not saying much.. but i think this is one of the best horror christmas movies,

it's got all the cheese, all the stupidity, all the screams and deaths that you need, even malcolm mcdowell..

it's up there with the best in my opinion, it's a little more polished than many of the others.

the biggest downside tho was the ending, massively underwhelming, so just don't expect anything and enjoy for what it is

Impossible to get your teeth into this routine slasher
Leofwine_draca27 December 2015
For a Christmas slasher, SILENT NIGHT isn't up to scratch. I've not seen the original SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT, but I have seen the likes of DON'T OPEN TILL Christmas and that memorable segment from TALES FROM THE CRYPT and both were much, much better. Director Steven C. Miller seems to vary broadly when it comes to the films he makes, for every trashy flick like UNDER THE BED he makes something superior like THE AGGRESSION SCALE. However, this is one of his worst.

The story is about a killer Santa Claus who goes around bumping off various victims while a local sheriff department attempt to track him down. There's little more plot to it than that, although attempts to raise the whole 'whodunit' aspect of the film fall flat because you never care who's responsible. The deaths are gory but somehow feel fake and overblown; it may be that the victims are all random and rather despicable in themselves, so it all goes over your head a bit.

Jaime King gives a tired performance as the protagonist of the piece and you get the sense that her heart wasn't really in it, and you can't really blame her for it. Malcolm McDowell is better, but is given little to work with other than play it gruff. The ending is as cheesy and over the top as you'd expect.

Surprised by this festive gem 🎄🎄
stevenjlowe8211 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by this wee festive horror flick. First off had no idea it was a remake until I had watched it and this really makes me want to see the original.

That is not bashing my enjoyment of this and believe me I am not normally a fan of remakes, particularly horror remakes as they don't have a great track record, well in my humble opinion anyway.

My favourite thing about this film was the death scenes, the music was amped up and the pacing was great during the many bloody scenes. My particular fave was the wood chipper scene. I mean it, I was genuinely aaagghhhh as that poor girl was stuck in alive, man that would not be a good way to go. The whole build up with the ratched up music was a great nod to old school slasher for me. The bad Santa was pretty creepy also so good job on that.

What let it down for me was the main girl, yes I forget her name already. I see what they were going for with her character, or at least attempting to. The actress wasn't great and the script was a little wavy in places. McDowell was OK but I found his accent odd and it seemed he slipped in and out of it on more than one occasion.

Ultimately it was a hit with me as it gave me what I want from a horror film and I was thorough entertained and a little creeper out so a solid 6/10 from me.

The movie don't do the trick.
m-4782612 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
As a slasher or otherwise. It's trying to go back to 80s slasher style, by only keeping what made some of it so hard to watch. With unlikeable characters that are either mean spirited or promiscuous, or both. You know won't last, and are here for writers to show how « inventive » they can be with their kills. You also have the selfless heroine you can't see being killed off, just by hearing her backstory. So half of the movie is easy to figure out, after watching the first ten or so minutes. When people start dying, in very ridiculous and violent ways, preventing us from being invested in thrilling parts, because there are none. Nothing suspenseful happened either, just blood and gore with two death scenes that would've been disturbing, if both actresses could act. The rest is probably the only decent part of the movie, which is unfortunately ruined by the killer's motive. That is supposed to make us feel for him/her... Not. Apart from Jaime King, who made me want to watch this, and a couple of supporting actors. The rest of the cast, including Malcolm McDowell, is here to kill time. So to speak. Of course, studios planned a sequel, but it never got one. And you can easily guess why, after watching this... Remake? Reboot? What is it exactly?

"Silent night, deadly night; all has come but somethin' ain't right!"
StevePulaski5 December 2012
Now here's a surprising little horror gem; Silent Night remakes the controversial cult classic horror film Silent Night, Deadly Night. The original 1984 film quite possibly faced more controversy and public backlash than any other horror film at the time, with the exception of maybe Cannibal Holocaust. Silent Night cuts down on the depravity and the sickening mean-spirit of the original. It's a rather enjoyably gory romp with a concept that, for me, will never get old.

The story is simple; in a sleepy suburban town, a tall man, baring a mask and a Santa suit begins committing several bloody homicides on Christmas Eve. Dispatched on the case is officer Aubrey Bradimore (Jaime King), who is constantly irritated by her needy, petulant, but also hilarious boss played by horror icon Malcolm McDowell. As she attempts to spend the holidays collectively, after losing her husband just a year prior around this same time, she finds it difficult when she is hunting down a crazed, sadistic killer whose footprints seem to be right under her's.

I grew up with twisted little genre exercises like this. As a kid, I feasted on films boasting outrageous killers and twisted setups. One of them was Santa's Slay, which, to this day, holds up as a complete film with scares, characters, quirkiness, and delightful black comedy, all while boasting one of the most entertaining horror figures of the 2000's. Going into this expecting a modest crossover between the original film and Santa's Slay, I was alarmed to find out that the film offers little humor, instead amping up the intensity and the bleakness of a horror film, all while maintaining its true nature.

One of the most notable sequences involves a nude model escaping a low-rent apartment after both photographers were killed and is left nearly helpless as she wanders throughout the back allies of the area. She runs into a crowded area with an active woodchipper and, while we see where this is going, we anticipate in an unsettling way what will happen and when it comes, we are thrilled and stunned how the film won't cop out and pull punches. It shows us just what we want and doesn't pull the typical "quick cut" move we've become so accustomed to.

Silent Night features quite possibly some of the goriest, most entertaining kills of the year, only topping it could be the gruesome lunacy of Marcus Dunstan's The Collection. To see this year's wide-releases such as The Apparition, The Devil Inside, House at the End of the Street, and Paranormal Activity 4 desperately try to to rustle up genre-scares and fail is a pathetic blow to the integrity and the capabilities of the entire horror genre. This is one of the first horror films of the year that I was proud to have sought out. It stays faithful to its genre and its cast and its crew seem to have had a lot of fun keeping it from straying into idiocy.

NOTE: Silent Night closes with a terrific revisionist anthem of one of the most iconic Christmas songs. It's fittingly called Silent Night, Deadly Night, and properly closes this quick , spontaneously enjoyable little film.

Starring: Jaime King. Malcolm McDowell, Donal Logue, Ellen Wong, and Brendan Fehr. Directed by: Steven C. Miller.

its ok
maxlewis-0564427 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
So this is a pretty decent but generic slasher but what can you expect for a Christmas horror movie. The acting is campy at times but also works quite well for the humor at times, the gore is fun at times as it seems to be taking the mickey out of itself, but overall an entertaining holiday slasher.

Yet another inferior remake
Wizard-84 December 2012
I am not surprised that someone decided to remake the controversial 1984 slasher movie "Silent Night, Deadly Night". I'm only surprised that it didn't happen sooner. The original movie isn't one of my favorite horror movies, but it sure looks a lot better when put up next to this extremely inferior remake. True, this remake looks a lot slicker and more expensive in most aspects - though for some reason there's only ONE scene where snow is visible! The biggest flaw of the movie is that it moves very slowly and sluggishly. Even when the movie gets around to killing someone, the feel of the movie isn't enlivened that much - the kills are so-so at best, and absolutely nothing special at their worst. It's not a surprise that none of the actors seems to be happy to be here - McDowell acts especially cranky and grumpy here. With the original movie (paired with its first sequel) just recently given a re-release on DVD, you'd be better off buying that disc instead of this very tired redo.

Nonsense
maximovlE27 October 2019
I'm almost speechless. Couldn't watch after the shredder scene, only because it was so bad.

It's not funny, it's not scary, it's not entertaining, it's just a cringe fest.

Malcolm McDowell... Really? What was he thinking???

Can't imagine the budget was much at all. College kids could have written that script, and probably filmed it better.

Lacks connection of the original
adam-grecco7 January 2013
I can't understand how so many people gave this remake such high reviews. Usually my feelings are right in line with the majority of the other users commenting. I found this film to be confusing with too many sub-plots running all over the place. This move lacked the character buildup of the killer, therefore leaving me feeling detached and unsympathetic to the killer's motives. In the original, the viewer may not agree with what Billy does, but you can at least see the psychology behind what "nurtured" him in to the state he ends up in.

What happened to Malcolm McDowell?? With titles like A Clockwork Orange, Caligula and even Blue Thunder, how did he stoop so low? Is he turning into a Michael Madsen "Need to pay the mortgage" actor?

I am a devoted horror fan with over 600 titles in my personal collection, not to mention all the ones I rent from Netflix. I prefer b- rated, obscure horror to mainstream blockbuster ones. This movie is bad, like the latest sequels of the SAW series. (I liked the first 3, just not any after that).
