You can make great romantic movie without useless drama
chiaramariecapritta15 September 2023
And that's how you write a romantic movie that's different from all the predictable ones full of useless drama... I mean, the end is of course obvious but it does not make it less enjoyable.

It's a cute romantic movie, definitely not a waste of time, with well written dialogues, and the two protagonist gosh... how could you not fall in love with them, they're just too sweet! The chemistry between them was undeniable!

Haley Lu Richardson is such a good and underrated actress, she should have more credit.

A really nice and sweet movie that doesn't only focused on the romantic plot line between the main characters but also engaged through the other plots of the families of the protagonists.

The perfect remedy for a tough day.
B3ansOnToast19 September 2023
It has been a while since I've watched a rom-com and this was a lovely way to get back into it. I was taken away by the chemistry between Haley Lu Richardson and Ben Hardy in this film. I absolutely loved them both and hope to see them on screen together again. Some great work done from casting to performance and soundtrack to deliver every emotion possbile to us and this film is indeed an emotional rollercoaster but very much worth it. Every tear, every laugh and everything in between.. so so so worth it.

While some might call it "cheesy," it's cheesy in a good way.

Give it a watch when you need a pick-me-up!

Predictably clear cut yet still heartwarming
hazard11116 September 2023
There's no sort of twist in here you just go with the flow where you know the ending goal will be. The journey is what makes it good. It's simple, direct, and wholesome. No wishy washy drama. It has a quiet tone to it. It's like looking at a fire while huddled in your blanket and drinking your cocoa for the thousand time.

I was touched by a certain part of the plot since I can very much relate to it and I thought it was done quite well. The acting is believable. The song helped move it along.

The main characters are nice and sweet. Their lines were heavily dosed on cheesiness partnered with good chemistry and overall everything just screamed wholesome and fluffy...which really that's all I ask for when I'm strapped in my cheesy rom com mood.

Statistics and Love
yusufpiskin15 September 2023
2023 Netflix movie based on Jennifer E. Smith's book The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight.

Director Vanessa Caswill once again tackles a very simple scenario and once again does a watchable job.

I always say that it is not a problem if a work contains clichés, the real problem is that the clichés are not used correctly.

And Vanessa Caswill is quite successful in this regard.

Yes, the film does not offer you anything that you do not know or have not seen before, but it presents this simple and cliché subject in a very watchable way.

And with great songs.

I haven't watched a movie with Shazam in a long time. I missed this feeling.

"Love at First Flight" is what it should have been called
TheDome8115 September 2023
Just a sweet, well made rom com. I haven't seen anything like this in a while. I tend to watch a lot edgier films. But every once in a while it's a nice break to watch something that's a bit on the predictable side.

I thought the acting was above average. I especially like the fact the the female lead wasn't over the top beautiful. She was charming and had a girl-nextt-door quality. I'm a guy so I couldn't tell you if the male lead was handsome or not. But overall, I thought all the stars were quite good.

If you're in the mood for something that's fairly predictable, give this one a shot. You won't be disappointed.

50% chance you'll like it
SaidNDone22 September 2023
"Love at First Sight" was much better than I was expecting given its title and status as a Netflix movie. Mostly because it embraced being a low-budget romance and focused heavily on the characters instead of wasting time on drama / bad 'action' scenes like most romance movies do.

However it is still held back by an over reliance on convoluted situations moving the plot forward (batteries dying at the last second, broken seat belts, etc), a weak soundtrack (the 'I Want to Dance with Somebody' remix was especially awful), and mediocre editing. The film also drifts a bit too deep into 'realism' at times (with uncharismatic dialogue and characters) and can get awkward. And it may just be me but Jameela Jamil's role as 'Providence' was reminiscent of Quilty in Lolita, which was a bit unsettling (the statistics dumps were also mind-numbing).

Overall, 'Love at First Sight' is a decent movie that could be been better if some more thought had been put into it.

95% of all romcoms are irritating. This is one of the 5%
Boristhemoggy18 September 2023
I dislike rom coms for some very good reasons. There is rarely good chemistry between leads, there's always a childish huff involved, there's usually a cheating or suspected cheating that goes on, they're not really romantic.

This story is boy meets girl, they fall in love, fate parts them but they manage to get back together.

It's a beautiful, fabulous story, a true romance. I actually believed in every character on screen and could relate to many of the scenes. All rom coms should follow this path from now on.

The acting from everyone is sublime (Haley Lu Richardson always is), the dialogue is never cheesy, the photography is beautiful and the direction smooth and brilliantly paced. The narrator constantly popping up is a great idea and Jamil makes this work so well.

This is one of the best rom coms ever made, I love it.

Being predictable doesn't stop it being good
masonsaul30 September 2023
Love at First Sight is as generic as rom coms can be, reaffirming that something incredibly formulaic still works when executed with heart. It's a fairytale rom com for the modern age with a surprising amount of emotional heft in between all the charm.

The instant connection between the main characters can usually be an issue with these but Ben Hardy and Haley Lu Richardson are so good at having an affection for each other that feels genuine. Jameela Jamil as the narrator also really works and is utilised just the right amount.

Vanessa Caswill's direction really knows how to match the material. The balance between comedy and any serious moments is handled really well, it's so colourful and the needle drops are great. Arguably heavy handed but undeniably good at enhancing how emotional a scene can be.

An ABSOLUTE pleasant surprise
GoRangers716 September 2023
Another sappy rom-com? No, hardly. Excellent acting, great story, perfectly placed bits of comic relief, and touching, tearful scenes that make this film one of my wife's and my most pleasant surprises of the year. I remembered Ben Hardy from Bohemian Rhapsody and his heartfelt performance in this film was great. My first time seeing Haley Lu Richardson, all I can say is that so many of these 'rom-com's the female actor is simply not believable, unable to deliver a funny line, and quite simply, ditsy. Not here, her performance was perfect, you felt for her character and her struggles. One last word of advice and its NOT a spoiler: cue up The Buggles' Video Killed the Radio Star video before you watch the movie. Trust me, you'll be glad you did. Enjoy.

Loved it, but the math seems off
apgelbard19 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed it. It was a fair amount of fluff, but sometimes that's enjoyable. Reminded me a lot of Netflix's excellent Dash and Lily from a couple of years ago.

But the one issue I had with the movie was that some off the math seems off. There's a line where the narrator says that a couple will kiss 12,872 times in their lives together and be married for 58 years. Doing the math (12,872 ÷ 58) means that's 221.9 times a year. Breaking it further (221.9 ÷ 365) means they only kiss 0.6 times a day (i.e. Every other day). That seems remarkably low for a married couple that the movie is presenting as "true love".

While the writer did a good job, some basic math would have helped.

Lovely!

Love At First Sight

Love At First Sight has a title that portrays it as being predictable, on the nose and cheesy, and it is all these and more.

This romcom based on a novel (The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight) sees its lead characters, Hadley Sullivan and Oliver Jones, as they fall in love on a flight from New York to London.

The plot of this movie is new or fresh, but the journey is what makes it worthwhile; there's also a change in narration that happens midway that was unexpected but done well. Although it relies on happenstance for some scenarios, this flick has a good dose of heart and romance.

The cast gives fitting performances and the chemistry between the leads is very palpable. Jameela Jamil as Providence/the narrator is a subjective hit or miss.

I expected this to be an eyeroll-inducing romcom, and it being a Netflix production didn't help me raise my hopes for it, but I was thoroughly surprised.

7.5/10.

Great movie for Netflix.. you will sob!
livdnlp-227-44403617 September 2023
I am actually super surprised by how good this movie was. It was a very good rom com from Netflix, I went in thinking it would be very cheesy. It was really good with some very sad parts. Haley Lu was really good in the movie and had really great chemistry with the male lead which made it a very believable story for me. The story line was overall very cute but keep those tissues nearby I know I had to for sure! Overall, it's a life I wish I was living (fate love story with a British man). It will be a movie I will keep in my roster when I'm looking for a good rom com on a rainy day! If you made it this far, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

"Love at First Sight" Evokes Pure 'Awwww 😍' with its Drama-Free Charm
mendymariamKE22 September 2023
"Love at First Sight" on Netflix offers a sweet and often moving romantic comedy experience.

The film relies on the charm of its leads, Richardson and the equally endearing Ben Hardy.

The couple's chemistry shines, making them believable even amidst the film's occasionally overly sentimental dialogue.

While the plot is fairly predictable, it doesn't take away from the fun and heartwarming journey the characters undertake.

From chance meetings at the airport to shared adventures in London, every moment feels serendipitous.

Watching them chase love is genuinely heartening, and you can't help but root for their happy ending.

The film leaves you with a warm, "Awwww..." and an appreciation for its undeniable cuteness.

"Love at First Sight" is a light-hearted, feel-good film with a straightforward and predictable storyline.

It smoothly follows the expected trajectory, delivering exactly what you'd hope for. Overall, it's an enjoyable watch.

Why has this got such high scores?
tomcushnie18 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This a really poor 'rom com'. There is 0 comedy. I'm a huge fan of great rom coms like About Time, Four Weddings and Notting Hill. This is certainly not one of them. And doesn't even come close. How do people feel this is deserving of 7 stars? The plot is so far fetched but I guess that's is the writers idea of 'comedy'? They end up sat together on a plane after talking and eating together in the waiting lounge *rolls eyes at the predictability*. Then they both have important do's to attend literally straight after they land. She fails to get his number because her phone breaks and the proceeds to track him down. This is all a bit strange considering their meeting was fairly brief and their conversations pretty dull. The movie is also full of a female commentator mentionining dating statistics. Is this part of the comedy? What a waste of time.

Loved this movie
shbeach19 November 2023
This was a last minute choice while scrolling thru Netflix. Started the trailer and knew it was exactly what I wanted and we loved it. Clever story and such chemistry between the stars. The commentary by Jameela Jimal was great. Perfect compliment to this sweet story. It's a love story for sure but it's also a story about hope. You never know where life can take you. Taking chances can be scary but can take you to new and exciting places.

The contrast between the wedding and memorial service was like life, the highs and the lows.

Great acting, fun dialogue and really good music all in London at Christmastime.

Don't let statistic ruin the potential....
PerryAtTheMovies10 February 2024
7.0/10 (Definitely Recommend)

"This isn't a story about love. This is a story about fate."

I don't know how many times I've watched the trailer for this movie only to say that I'll watch it later. Every time I watch it I have the want to watch it. Well, it's later and I'm glad I watched it.

First off, it's definitely not as cheesy as I had imagined it at all. The pacing is excellent as it clips along at good intervals of intriguing and somewhat boring. My downside is that it hits too close to personal issues, but it's still enjoyable nonetheless.

The chemistry is perfect between Haley Lu Richardson and Ben Hardy. At least in the context of this movie they feel perfectly suited to find each other. The addition of Jameela Jamil as the narrator was comforting. She plays the role well and hits the intermittent marks just right.

With Valentine's Day so close I would almost dare to say that this would be a good movie to watch. It's not cheesy romance and there's good chemistry. The story is based of statistics so even if there was a bit of cheese in there it still holds true to what it is. I liked it and would probably watch it again.

That's all for now. Thank you for taking the time to read my review. Until next time.... Enjoy the show!

The Music is awful
michel-massing20 September 2023
Haley Lu Richardson plays it brillant and is giving the movie the spark the music trys so hard to give. Every 3 Minutes a cheesy Song is going to ruin the movie. But there is this charming, fresh and sympathic women, saving the movie. PS. The movie is inspired by four weddings and a funeral, thats for shure. Maybe its a New Version of it for a young Generation.

So, if you re looking for a heartwarming little romcom , this movie will do it.

By the way. Richardsen plays a wonderful Portia in white lotus. Portia was one of the characters in the ensemble cast that spent their vacation in Sicily in The White Lotus Season 2.

For the romcom thirsty
laura-dreamweaver1 October 2023
Is this a great movie? No. Is it predictable? Yes. Did I somehow thoroughly enjoy it? Yes. I think there hasn't been a great romcom in years, so watching a decent one pulled my heartstrings. It was nice to watch an easy viewing movie with no political agenda and no self awareness. The quiet directing and acting was a pleasure. If you go in with low expectations you'll have a pleasant ride. Now, I have another 200 characters so, let me say this is a great film to watch on a rainy Sunday afternoon, or on a flight, or when you're preoccupied, or when you need to just have an easy escapist couple of hours.

Better than I could have ever expected!
jenniferannkoch16 September 2023
I went into this thinking it would be your typical rom com just like all the others, and it was EXCEPT it was so much more. Definitely had some storylines that were unexpected and emotional, I had to get up for the tissues! I loved seeing the relationship not only between the leads but between them and their families. Overall the writing was a bit quirky which was very much refreshing! At first I thought the narration aspect would be annoying but it was just perfect for the story and especially for the ending. Definitely recommend giving this one a watch! Not only to have on in the background but to actually sit down and enjoy.

The first half is good but the rest not so much
julieshotmail23 September 2023
This movie is carried solely by the charms of Haley Lu Richardson. She really knows how to convey hot chemistry with a dude using her vulnerable eyes and heartfelt facial expressions. Ben Hardy, on the other hand, is just OK. He has his charms, but I feel he looks too old for 22. Sure enough, he is really 32 years old. Back to Richardson - she can be the modern-day Sandra Bullock replacement. Very charming, very pretty, with an oozing girl-next-door vibe. The meet-cute on the plane is worth the watch, however, as soon as their personal lives are introduced, the movie goes quickly downhill, especially with the storyline of Oliver's parents. It's cringe. The horrendous soundtrack doesn't help either. Instead of having wondrous themes about fate, the movie devolves into contrived moments, so it's such a shame because the movie started out so well.

Well executed
paulpaul-2374219 September 2023
Well worth a watch on a night in. All you need for a good movie is a solid concept that's well executed. This movie doesn't break boundaries, but it is well done. Musical accompaniment is excellent throughout and crafts a tone and motif. It is more a rom-dramedy than a rom-comedy.

The lead couple is well acted. Both leads are going through family situations, but it doesn't feel too contrived. There are even a couple heartfelt family moments. However this movie is carried by the two leads. They are both well acted and their chemistry is excellent. The main couple feels authentic in a way 99% of rom coms don't.

Also mayo sucks so you get a point for that.

Light-hearted one time watch
Sexy-scientist13 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is very different from the book, so I will not try to compare it to the book and try to see it in its own light. Both the lead actors are not believable in their characters. There is not enough time given to the characters to develop the chemistry. Hadley's fear of closed spaces was picturized at the time of take-off, but then it did not come-up during rest of the flight, the cab to church, the bus to memorial, etc. Hadley's phone losing the charge right after she got down of a flight is also unbelievable. A grown-up getting lost is full-on fantasy. The movie is trying hard to be visually appealing and vivacious at the expense of emotions closer to reality, chemistry and continuity.

So much more than expected
clareemms15 September 2023
When I first saw the trailer I expected this movie to be cheesy, with bad acting, a predictable storyline and predicted that after watching I would never want to see it again.

But... I loved every minute of it. It wasn't dragged out as expected, rather each scene made sense in terms of the whole picture.

I thought the acting was excellent and extremely relatable and the storyline a lot more unexpected than I expected :) The plot and character development was so well thought out and I felt like I'd just watched a true story unfold.

Hadley (played by Hailey Lu Richardson) is an actress I've never seen before but will watch again for sure! And Oliver (Ben Hardy) captured the character's essence in such an authentic way.

I was in just the right mood to watch such a beautiful love story. A lot of heart and I will definitely watch it again.

Enjoyable, short rom-com
josh-hensel16 September 2023
We didn't have any expectations going into this movie, but it turned out to be very decent. One of the better Netflix offerings that we've watched lately.

While parts of the movie are absolutely predictable, there are other parts that caught us both off guard. Since this is a spoiler free review, I won't make mention of these reasons. I will say that the movie was quite sentimental though and it did hit me in the feels a few times.

I thought that Jameela Jamil's character was mostly unnecessary, although she is basically a human embodiment of fate and does help to push the plot along.

I would agree with one of the first reviews that I read that the movie should have been titled differently. They had mentioned "Love at First Flight", but I also think that "Love in Plane Sight" would have also suited it nicely.

If you've got 90 minutes to kill and are looking for a perfectly serviceable rom-com, I think this is worth checking out.

Boring and bland
the_mikatu16 September 2023
Not sure such a high score. This is the type of movie you would watch if nothing else is available and that 5 minutes later you would even forget you ever watched it.

This is just boring and bland.

There is no chemistry, no plot, nothing. It is supposed to be a rom-com but there is no comedy, or romance.

Just save your time and give it a pass.

The pair met in the airport and got seated together in the airplane.

They keep forcing a conversation but it is quite boring.

You keep waiting for something to happen but the conversation keeps getting more boring and when you realize you are asleep and regretting the time you wasted watching this.
