This is television in touch with humanity, a masterpiece
karenpretzer19 September 2013
If you live in fear of aging, this show will terrify you. If you understand how fragile and alike we all are, this show will touch you deeply. It grabs you when you're least expecting it and leads you to beauty and love and laughter. This is television like I have never seen before: stripped of shame, self-consciousness, pretension and full of heart-hugging poignancy and compassion.

Derek's characters are not exceptional in any way. And yet they are heroes. The elderly residents have minimal roles and yet you get to truly know them. And care about them. This is a show that asks, no demands, that you open your heart to others.

Brilliant, but certain to frighten many and be misunderstood.

very enjoyable and heartfelt too
Jamesbgrim13 April 2012
I must say that I wasn't expecting to enjoy this as much as I thought, but I actually very much did! I went in just expecting the usual funny Ricky with the added bonus of Karl Pilkinton in the mix but was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't just humorous, but unexpectedly very touching and heartfelt. Ricky is obviously a very intellectual and talented individual and even though he does take the mickey out of many people at the best of times, he truly is a very caring person and would never offend people with disabilities for the sake of a good laugh. For those who are as skeptical as I was, don't be, give it a try, its not what you'd expect.

brilliant

Good comedy makes you laugh. Great comedy makes you cry. Brilliantly done once again, Mr Gervais. Ricky has always been more than a funny man; he's been an observer of funny, a discoverer of funny, a philosopher of funny. Beneath all the ridiculous and the offensive, there has always been a very kind soul and Ricky's work has matured over time from the wacky Brent dance into the tears of a not clever, not handsome, but kind young man. Ricky's work covers the entire emotional spectrum and he gets each color spot on. This unexpectedly touching work is a natural progression of his brilliant career, a fitting link in a chain of works that he can one day look back on and be proud of. Thanks for sharing yourself with the world, Ricky. You should be the president of the world.

One of the best things Gervais has done
Scudpipes13 April 2012
The pilot was touching, humane, painfully sad, sometimes hilarious... make the series NOW Channel 4... Gervais proves that behind all the bluster and arrogance he is actually a rather sweet, sensitive human being... and Derek is a delight... it is not easy to blend comedy and poignancy - and even if the Einaudi piano was laid on a bit thick at the end, this was magnificent, heartfelt stuff. Great moments include Derek charging naked through the old people's home and the Karl Pilkington character saying, with spot on timing "Normal"; and Hannah's head butt in the pub was the best 'attack on plebs' scene since Richard Gere kung-fu-ed some punks in An Officer and a Gentleman. Thank God for Ricky Gervais, doing it his way. And remember, we're all getting old folks...

Derek
tyreeewebster13 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Where do I begin? Ricky Gervais is one of the funniest and influential people in comedy. He's up there with Ronnie Barker and Tommy Cooper. But with his great comedic talent, comes his hidden talent of offering us a good drama with a hint of comedy... that was 'Derek'.

In this TV pilot, Gervais went back to his 'Office' roots with a scripted documentary show, which centers around a mentally disabled care home worker named Derek Noakes (Played by Ricky Gervais, who also wrote and directed it)

PROS: To start off, Ricky's portrayal of the disabled Derek is NOT offensive in every sense of the word, Derek is played with such realism and humour that he becomes sweet, lovable, relate-able and also funny, too. Derek seems like the sort of character who can carry an entire series. He makes you laugh and makes you cry in different scenes and THAT is what makes a good character in something like this. Kerry Godliman was a nice touch as Hannah, but I'd like to focus on Karl Piklington, the round headed accomplice of Ricky Gervais. This was his first acting role, and he did a pretty good job as Douglas, he was moody and was complaining as usual, but he was still funny as the character. The story was good, as you get great comedy AND brilliant emotion.

CONS: The fact that it was just a one- off. IT NEEDS TO BE A FULL SERIES.

Gervais' best work since David Brent. Watch it.

DEREK Written and Directed by: Ricky Gervais

Starring: Ricky Gervais, Kerry Godliman and Karl Pilkington

Great drama - not so great comedy!
mark-newman-112 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The work of Kerry Godliman (especially) and Karl Pilkington save this short drama. But, naturally, the focus is on Ricky Gervais... and he, too, has moments of greatness here.

Unfortunately, for the most part, the title character is more annoying than affable. It's probable that this is even intentional. Derek doesn't need to trot around and the facial impediment is too distracting. In addition, a setback for the viewer is that we know the actor outside of this character too well and we can't escape from Ricky Gervais the man.

The fall in the pond is unnecessary and his wordy explanations to camera are also in need of a more pithy approach. It's unlikely that someone with Derek's personality would be so at ease with the documentary film crew. (Is it even necessary at all to film the program in this way?)

But that said; I love Ricky Gervais and despite my petty gripes, this is still masterful work. The music, direction and settings are perfect. Karl's office alone should get an award!

I hope the series gets made. I watched the pilot twice - the second time to study Godliman. She was absolutely perfect. My advice to Ricky (as an unqualified nobody who has done nothing of significance, ever!) is to dump the comedy in Derek and write a six part drama.

This show was fantastic! I thought at first it may have been about mocking seniors but it definitely was not. Social commentary at its best. Ricky is amazing in this; the mannerisms, the heartfelt reactions, everything was on point. I work with special needs students and this just tugged at my heart strings. I cried so much at the end of the pilot and I am hooked for the rest of this and any future series. I really think that this show can make a difference in the way people perceive and treat others. Well done, Ricky! Loved the head-butt, I was so on side with that. P.S. My husband wants me to say how awesome Karl is so: Karl is awesome! Done.

There is simply nothing here
bob the moo28 April 2012
The Office was a work of genius that will stand for time as such, that it spawned a successful US version and created a slew of comedies using the "fly on the wall" documentary approach just serves to confirm this. It was painfully well observed, all at once funny but tragically sad and it had great characters throughout it. And it seems such a long time ago doesn't it? I know this is because it is about 10 years old now but work like Derek just make it seem even more like a distant memory.

When it showed recently critics seem to be split but they were generally split on whether or not Gervais was giving a good portrayal of a simple type helping in his community or if he was being offensively insulting to those he was trying to represent with Derek. I'll comment on this but for me this was a side issue – the main thing was whether or not this half hour of comedy drama was any good. Frankly it isn't. In terms of structure, this isn't comedy/drama as in the two are merged together and play off each other like The Office, I mean it is comedy, then drama – and never the twain shall meet. This split is made worse by neither working. The comedy isn't funny – not even at all. I have read some reviews of it defending this saying "it isn't that type of comedy" as if it is more high-brow, but yet we have "high-brow" gags such as Gervais falling in a pond (a gag so signposted that it appeared in the previous programme on channel 4) and then running naked across the old people's home. Yeah – "high brow", sure.

Once we have had a chance to laugh at, sorry "with" the characters, we get into the drama in which the music is as obvious as it comes, Derek gets to stare mournfully from inside simple eyes and a "life goes on" message sort of comes out. It is terribly cloying and clunky to say the least. In terms of his character I do actually think that he is not being offensive – his Derek is recognisable as a real person and, although it conforms to certain clichés, it is not an unfair or cruel stereotype. However, this is not the same as saying he is a good character or that he is well written – because he is not. He has nothing here and nothing works for him – so his performance may well be "brave" and "well meaning" but it is also of little value to anything. Godliman is good even if her character is a bit exaggerated; I liked her and my only problem is that her "plain but likable roundfaced woman" character is the same as we have seen many times from Gervais now. Pilkington is OK but a bit gruff, while others in support are so-so. No character is particularly good and nothing really works here.

I have no idea why Derek exists and I mean that genuinely to the point where I could almost believe it is some sort of attempt by Gervais to put the whole "mong" controversy behind him and nothing more. It has no laughs, very little humanity, no real drama and instead is dull, emotionally simplistic and surprisingly poor across the board. I like Gervias but this was a terrible special.

A work of art that's hard to swallow.
b563606025 January 2014
It often seems the present-day landscape of TV and film is one of desolation where the most effort is in serving the lowest common denominator.

In comes Derek, a series that seems to embody mental illness itself though mental illness is said by the creator not to be a factor.

This show deals with loss, self-realization, and the lives of caregivers and those receiving care in a way perhaps never before seen in this medium. Anyone who has been in these real life environment may be stunned to a degree by just how realistic these characters and situations seem to be.

The viewer is best left to take in the series without attempting to confine it to a category. Though the cast contains players we have grown accustomed to making us laugh, I myself cried more than I laughed.

Ricky's character of Derek is hard for me to understand and represents what I find most difficult to accept and what may be to me a fundamental flaw in this production. Ricky claims the character is not meant to be mentally ill in any fashion but nearly every aspect of the character implies a cognitive, even physical faculty that is not operating at 100%. What makes this show particularly peculiar in this regard is that we are subject to monologues in the form of retrospective video interviews in each episode that expound upon the virtues of Derek. We are constantly told of how capable he is, how kind, giving and ideal a person he is. The problem is we never actually see this. There is no on-screen depiction of a capable man running a retirement care home. Most of his behavior is odd and much of his speech and thought processes seem indecipherable. The character of Hannah seems to carry the most load of work. She seems to be the one running the place and with the big heart, not Derek. We see Hannah in every episode demonstrating self-sacrifice and empathy. Yet Derek fuddles about barely able to walk himself across the room or comprehend the simplest thing in the world. Much of the time he behaves as a child. There is a difference between childish and child-like, and much of Derek's representation is the former. We are occasionally given some insight that Derek knows more or is keener than he lets on but this isn't enough to equal the endless praise he is lauded with in every episode.

In the end it feels very strange to me to be constantly told outright about the virtues of a character, but see no basis for those assertions when the character himself is featured.

Karl's character of Dougie is my favorite and always good for a laugh for me. Then, Karl P is one of the wittiest men in comedy. When Ricky said Karl was his gift to the world I am inclined to agree. However, not because he's an idiot, he's brilliant in such a practical, simple way that his common sense and instantaneous rational logic at all the little things we take for granted without question is the mark of a true genius. His character in Derek is Karl as we know and love him pure and simple with the addition of a wig.

Despite the glaring flaw I perceive with the character and representation of Derek himself, the show has heart and is simply unlike anything else I've ever seen. For laughs it's worth it just for Karl's time on screen. I could do without the dramatics, and like others have said it can come off as contrived at times. Yet the tears that fell from my eyes were real. It deals with love and death in realistic ways we rarely see in popular media.

I don't recommend Derek as a comedy, nor as a drama, but as a work of art. A real work of art has an emotional impact and gets people debating, discussing, thinking about the work and themselves and the world around. Derek does that, the proof is here in the reviews and forums of IMDb. It's not the sort of show I would marathon on Netflix, but take in slowly a bit at a time. It's worth a look.

Bittersweet, Empathic and Funny
jparmar-981-30975313 April 2012
Admittedly, I'm a fan-boy of the Ricky Gervais, Steve Merchant and Karl Pilkington gang; a fan since their early Xfm radio broadcasts. However, there is absolutely no bias in this as I say that 'Derek' is a beautiful mockumentary comedy drama. Those who dislike the show will undoubtedly draw misconceptions purely from the name Gervais, probably before they even see the show. Gervais has shown, again, that he has a brilliant talent for observational comedy, paying attention to the psychology and philosophy that defines the characters in the show. There is no cruelty in this; as he says, nobody complains about Mr. Bean, who is clearly more 'retarded' (for want of a better word) than Derek. Derek is a simple man and the show conveys an empathy towards the people we see every day and feel pity for. There's brushes of true sadness amongst the innocent comedy. Some touching moments from just a pilot episode and already I want to see more of this. Undoubtedly, there will be very close-minded people who will never be able to draw the funny side out of a show like this and will whinge about it. To those, I say the whole joke is on you and the best thing is, you'll never know why.

I have to say, i did enjoy it

Warning: Spoilers
as is often the case with pilots the characters involved, with the exception of the nurse could use a little work. The character "Derek" was not too in fact it just needs a bit of refinement, some of the quirky characteristics like the mouth thing and the walk are a little overdone but if they are toned down a little I can see it working quite well. This is a completely new character for Gervais really, it is pretty far removed from David Brent and Andy Millman. Karl has just had a wig put on and there is not much in the way of acting but it feels natural at least and that wig is amazing.I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with Gervais' emotional scene, which although we have seen glimpses of his serious side in the office and extras I found it quite moving and very effective. There weren't many laughs I must admit however as fans like myself, of all gervais' work can remember, not all the episode of the office and extras were hilarious, there were a few which were actually quite dramatic. I hope for more and I'd love to see a cameo role for Steve.

Deathly Derek
VictorianCushionCat14 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
For some reason there seems to be an army of Gervais haters in this country who must of been delighted to hear he was tackling the situation of a simple chap in a nursing home, surely it would push Gervais over the boundaries of decency so far that he'd never recover.

Well for me 'Derek' wins on 3 fronts, firstly whilst it often works, it's nice to get Gervias comedy without the glitzy line-up of Grade A celebrity and Les Dennis sending themselves up. The characters in this are as downbeat as it gets.

Secondly it clearly is an attempt to wind up and give fuel to the Gervais hater bunch, by setting it in an old folks home it's not the most obvious setting for tastefull comedy but then good comedy should always touch on the dark side of life, and there is not much darker than a building full of humans at the end of their life.

And 'Derek' wins because whilst he is clearly one of life's losers, a low achiever you feel that ultimately the creators are rooting for him and giving his character a voice.

It's heartbreaking and cruel when the nasty young girls in the pub insult him, but heartwarming when colleague Hannah gives one of them a hardcore head butt.

In a world where James Corden is considered by many to be a comedy genius and 'Matilda' would appear to be our most popular mainstream comedy I'm just glad that there is still some kind of contemporary alternative to such drivel.

Another victory for the Gervais!

Laughably Bad
provenelk13 April 2012
First off, I want to say that I am for all intents and purposes a Ricky Gervais fan, I like (most) of his stuff, and his other new series 'Life's Too Short' was, in my opinion, brilliant.

'Derek' however, is terrible. I mean, really bad. First off Gervais goes in for another of the 'mockumentary' style, a format of television he is pretty comfortable in, and has had spectacular success in with series such as 'The Office', 'Extras' and 'Life's too Short'. However whatever charm or resonance these series has, 'Derek' has a severe lack of.

Ricky Gervais performance as the titular character 'Derek' is laughably bad. Truly, its awful, he literally just puts on a greasy wig and screws up his face. Honestly, it reminded me of Ben Stiller in Tropic Thunder in his ill fated 'Simple Jack'. It really is that hilariously bad. I think disabled people should be offended, not that Ricky Gervais is portraying disabled people for comedy, but that 'Derek' is Ricky Gervais's perception and interpretation of a disabled person. Seriously? I mean just look at him in the promotional picture, i hope for his sake that Gervais will look back upon this series with a personal shame and disgust.

Karl Pilkington is fine, though really he only just plays himself, but he is the only part of the whole series which really works. He comes out with a few quips and Pilkington-esque rants which might raise a chuckle or too, but thats the only source of comedy.

What most annoys me, is what people have labelled as 'profound'. Putting some piano music over a sad scene is supposedly the source of this profoundness. Oh but wait, hes so friendly and simple isn't that wonderful that hes sad. My god people, a nutless monkey (another Tropic Thunder reference) could have written this television pilot, its simple, mushy, sentimental rubbish. Gervais has literally thrown together some 'profound' or 'tocuhing' elements together and made this monstrosity, i'll name them right now. Disabled, Old Age, Death, Stupidity, Poverty, social awkwardness, romance. Seriously, watch the episode (if you can honestly bear it) and see that the entire plot rotates around this sentimental mush.

Instead of making a funny, tongue-in-cheek, enjoyable and charming series, such as 'Life's Too Short', the result is this grotesque, laughable and embarrassing attempt at a television series. I'm really not surprised this hasn't been picked up for a full series, it is truly, truly, awful.

Brilliant pilot, eagerly awaiting the series.
jogaskell12325 June 2012
Being a massive fan of The Office since it came out, and also a fan of the brilliant Extras, I was quite disappointed with Life's Too Short when it came out last year. It seemed to be a bit too similar to the Office, but did what the Office, just did not as effectively Derek though, I loved. It was brilliantly dramatic, sad, funny and simply a beautiful piece of work. The subject matter is treated very respectfully, putting many initial knee-jerk criticisms made by many to bed.

No, it is not The Office, and isn't as laugh-out-loud funny, yet it made me laugh and literally cry in parts. And things rarely do that, especially comedies. This is testament to the masterful piece of television that this is.

In addition, another massive bonus of this series is the inclusion of Karl Pilkington, who is always just a joy to see on screen.

Generally a warm, uplifting, funny and very powerful piece of work. Gervais and Merchant have evolved, and the work is different, but still brilliant.

Can't wait for the series.

Life has ordinary moments, too
nakrugt5 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
People are used to watching films/series full of interesting moments.

nobody, I'm sure, likes to watch a character sleeping for more than 20 seconds where in fact they sleep at least 6 hours a day, or, another character do the right thing right away in the beginning a movie and therefore causing no conflict, which would not be interesting enough to attract those who are addicted to popular culture...

Gervais spends his money for trying to make "watchers" taste some of the ordinary moments of life... with a slight layer of humor...

yet, as we see, the "watchers" are no longer audience since they have the remote in their hands, and have the right to refuse to be part of the work of fiction before them...

this pilot is disturbing, I might say, for those who prefer to see only the fun moments of life...

for those who like things closer to life, which is in "real 3D" so to speak, "Derek" is quite moving... and a brave step, as well...

wish they did the series...

Derek

This is amazing viewing folks. I have to say that i am a fan of Ricky, Karl and Stephen's stuff but not blindly and I would be quick to say that this is not a comedy but does have some very funny bits in it... i have an autistic son and Ricky has captured some of his conditions perfectly in this. For me the show really concentrates on how people with these problems are often 'more human' than us normals!!

I will watch this again and again i'm sure, however i kinda hope that he doesn't make a series out of it, it will gain a better status as a one of. This is such a difficult topic to make a show about and get it right but Ricky has managed just that.

Fantastically written and played by Ricky and the other members of cast
jonsta17 May 2012
Very touching short film and very well written, this short one off had me in fit's of laughter throughout the episode and there's also a touch of emotion which complements and episode as I've read so many critics blasting the episode as a "mockery of the disabled" - I feel this is completely untrue as Ricky plays a sensitive character who cares for the elderly. This episode gives a slight insight into what life actually seems to be like at a care home, as it would make sense because this episode is filmed in a documentary style.

Pros - Amazingly written story line, good balance of emotion and comedy , Had me in fits of laughter throughout the episode (Too good that I watched it 4 times in 2 days to show over people how touching it was and I was still in hysterics every time I watch it.)

Cons - No particular cons apart from I was expecting a series and was looking forward to another episode - Only to find it was a one off, Channel 4 should develop this into a series

Ricky Gervais has a deceptively huge heart. It's simple and beautiful. Roy Kent IS everywhere...he's even on Derek. I love the actors Ricky surrounds himself with. Their real life friendships feed his work. This is Ricky Gervais at his best.

Potential to be epic
riverstyxmail15 February 2013
This reminds me of the moment in time when Jennifer Saunders wrote Jam and Jerusalem. I'm not sure Gervais fans are ready for this. Overall, I think this show has the potential to be epic. I have a few minor criticisms (such as the maudlin music-it's just not necessary and sort of cheapens it).

I think Gervais is perfectly suited to play an adult with "'tism". And, if done right, this could really be one of those shows that makes me so excited about television right now at its best. Surprising story arcs, smart character development, honest emotional complexity and genius humor. Like someone said before "The best comedy makes you cry." And, I'll counter with, the best drama makes you laugh. I have all the faith that Gervais and Co. are capable of this. As long as it develops complexly and stays more light and smart than emotionally overwrought...I say put a stamp on it and ship it to the States. Put it on a cable network. No remakes, we'll take Gervais neat. TV execs would probably be too nervous to broadcast it here. But, I liked Gervais even more after the Globes. I don't think Americans really understand him. I think this is a vehicle he could be appreciated in, his depth, his humor etc. I've never taken him as mean spirited, which I think he has been unfairly categorized. He has a spirited humor in a world full of "Emperors" to be poked at (even when he is the biggest emperor of them all).

Right now it's an 8 of 10 based on the pilot.

Ricky Gervais delivers another slab of monotonous "comedy" once again with Derek.
christy_luuu12 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Ricky Gervais delivers another slab of monotonous "comedy" once again with Derek. A mockumentary that's about as revolutionary as a Che Guevara T-shirt in a tourist shop in Carnaby Street. Essentially it takes place in an old people's home in which Ricky Gervais plays the character of a carer called Derek. Once again, the same Gervais routines are utilised. Slapstick moments like a pie getting stuck to his arse, falling into a pond and running around naked combine with cuts to each character delivering terribly scripted lines. All in all it's about as heartwarming as drowning in the Antarctic Ocean. The only beam of hope is Karl Pilkington who essentially plays Karl Pilkington and therefore balances Gervais' terribly painful limits as an actor. Ricky Gervais is no Robin Williams and his portrayal of "Derek" is stomach turningly nauseating and awkward. To conclude, for me Derek had no humorous moments, the predictable love story intertwined was terrible and the characters were unlikable. Ricky "one trick pony" Gervais should have called it a day after The Office because this is just embarrassing.

The great mistake......
prowler0000-216 April 2012
This is a comedy that sets out to alienate the viewer.

Although it tries to pull heartstrings, All it succeeds in doing is creating a feeling of discomfort. The titular character is neither endearing nor charming, Those around him are either annoying or derivative, the direction is pitifully obvious & anyone involved should hang their heads in shame!

Not even the comic timing of Karl Pilkington can save this travesty, which is a shame, as Mr Gervais has created this "Character". The only redemption I can find is that it highlights the U.K's woefully lacking mental healthcare system. Oh, & Kerry Godliman should now have a long queue of agency scouts beating her door down. The only acting highpoint of the programme!

In a previous review, I castigated "Big Top", stating that it was unworthy of comparison to the sublime "The Office": Derek is on a similar level to "Big Tat", perhaps worse due to it's stablemates.

Another series of Extra's or more "Guest Star" roles would have been better advised.

Still, the "Gervais Money-train" rolls on, & my comments will amount to nothing in the great scheme of things. For IMDb readers: You have been warned!!!!

The Emperor's New Clothes
evilyuffie13 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I have a definite bias; I loathe Ricky Gervais. However, I do appreciate most of his work; The Office deserves it's incredible success, the XFM podcasts are hilarious, and Life's Too Short was saved by Warwick Davis' masterful leap into slapstick. Karl Pilkington makes an excellent addition to his foray of 'losers' who he so willingly casts out for our amusement.

Derek is a homely attempt to portray life in an old folk's home in Britain in the usual mockumentary style; classed as a 'comedy drama', there is little of the latter and even less of the former. Gervais' continuous attempts to cast himself in a key role have been his downfall with 'Derek'; Those of us that know his work well recognise Derek's jarring underbite and manner of speaking as Gervais' usual go-to affectations when mocking people for idiocy. Is Derek then a mockery, or a portrayal?

In watching the pilot, I couldn't help but feel a layer of cynicism and gloating that is so commonly present in his other work. This teamed with the overkill of Ludovico Einaudi made the entire show feel disingenuine. Had Gervais cast one of his motley crue of British stars, or even toned down the speech impediment, I feel Derek could have redeemed itself.

Derek (2012)
darshangood13 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
should have chose a different name there are too many characters named Derek like a common English name that we all have come across , i have only ever met 1 Derek in my life so far in England names like Tom, John, James, Richard, Peter or jack would have been better

well watching this was odd it was too dull so far that's why i gave it a 5 rating because there was too much musical involvement where it dose not need to be, its over the top where it should not be and its too subtle in places where there should be more substance

the main character Derek needs to be polished i guess this is like black adder where the 1st series was still trying to find the limits of the character to build the story around him this is what they will do i guess that is if they care , because Derek needs to only have a limited intelligence and have the story evolve around him and only give him lines that suit his mind set

i like Karl in it but his wig looks cheap and ridiculous like its from a joke shop , i think Ricky must have made him wear this silly wig its look awful am gonna enjoy see it and hope Karl's wig has a following , hahaha

i only laughed at two parts the line Ricky had at the end and when Karl dose not care about the painting

am gonna keep watching to see if the story get better
