Derek: Pilot (2012)

Ricky Gervais delivers another slab of monotonous "comedy" once again with Derek. A mockumentary that's about as revolutionary as a Che Guevara T-shirt in a tourist shop in Carnaby Street. Essentially it takes place in an old people's home in which Ricky Gervais plays the character of a carer called Derek. Once again, the same Gervais routines are utilised. Slapstick moments like a pie getting stuck to his arse, falling into a pond and running around naked combine with cuts to each character delivering terribly scripted lines. All in all it's about as heartwarming as drowning in the Antarctic Ocean. The only beam of hope is Karl Pilkington who essentially plays Karl Pilkington and therefore balances Gervais' terribly painful limits as an actor. Ricky Gervais is no Robin Williams and his portrayal of "Derek" is stomach turningly nauseating and awkward. To conclude, for me Derek had no humorous moments, the predictable love story intertwined was terrible and the characters were unlikable. Ricky "one trick pony" Gervais should have called it a day after The Office because this is just embarrassing.
