Where is the "ending"?
Vancouver7719 March 2023
I don't normally give such low scores to movies - I try to focus on the positive instead of the negative. And certainly this movie offered solid acting, good production quality and what seemed to be a good script. I was engrossed by the various mysteries which were the subject of the movie. I *almost* enjoyed this movie, but the ending ruined the enjoyment of the rest of the movie because nothing got resolved at the end. There is the build up of these different mysteries, but they literally went no where. There is a rather non-sensical ending which did not address the outstanding questions or wrap up the mysteries in any way. Ultimately, it felt like the time I spent watching the beginning of the movie was a waste. I would love to watch this movie again, with a proper ending!!! So viewer beware - you will get sucked into the suspense of this movie, but IMO it ultimately goes nowhere.

Weak, incoherent writing makes this a senseless fare! [+28%]
arungeorge1317 March 2023
I keep wondering about the rationale behind Netflix producing films with such weak screenplays. The little intrigue that the film offers quickly evaporates once the second act comes on, and the hallucinatory visions the protagonist (Ward Kerremans) keeps having, lack purpose. The protagonist's wife (Sallie Harmsen) takes the perspective of the audience, trying to make sense of it all - hers is the only performance that I took fair notice of, in this mess. The mystery (or the lack of) is so terribly sketched that I felt it had nothing to achieve, even though the protagonist keeps making such a big, nonsensical fuss. The makers also add a couple of pointless jumpscares. In the end, it just feels like you wholly wasted 90-odd minutes.

If you want to hear a lot of baby cries and other irritating sounds, this one's for you
paul-allaer18 March 2023
As "Noise" (2023 release from Belgium; 90 min.) opens, we are introduced to Matthias and Liv, a young couple with a newborn son. They are moving into the house where Matthias gre up with his dad. His dad is now in a seniors center. Matthias is having a hard time coping with the baby waking him up every night. Then one day, Matthias finds out that his dad was the CEO of a nearby chemical plant, which now stands abandoned. Why? At this point we are 10 min. Into the movie.

Couple of comments: this is a full-ledged production from Flanders, Belgium (the Dutch-speaking side of Belgium). I hail from Flanders, Belgium myself, and when I saw this in the newly added titles of Netflix, I just had to watch it. Alas, this is not a great movie. For that, the story line is simply too thin and scattered. This is not a "mystery" or a "thriller" or even a "psychological drama". It's a hodge-podge of lots of genres but in the end can't decide what it really wants to be. The most interesting thing about the movie is the sound construction, piecing together all kinds of irritating noises, none more so than the baby cries, again and again, and again, but also things like the car wash sounds, a fruit blender, etc. We get the point: Matthias is overwhelmed by noises. The cast features Sallie Harmsen as Liv (she also starred in "Blade Runner 2049").

"Noise" started streaming on Netflix just this weekend. Unless you are from Flanders, Belgium and are simply curious as to what a Flemish movie can do, I don't know that I can recommend this film in good conscience to anyone. Of course don't take my word for it, so check it out and draw your own conclusion.

What did I just watch?
zombienic19 March 2023
This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. It's like a bunch of people had a bunch of ideas and they just threw them all into a hat and put them together into a movie that makes absolutely no sense! There is zero backstory so you have no clue what's going on. The main male character is trying to figure out some sort of mystery about his father's old factory that has nothing to do with the other theme of the movie. People in town are rude to the main female character but we are never given a reason why! I've never seen writing this poor on the screen! I wish I could get the time back I was waiting for the story to come together and make sense but it never did. Skip this one!

A boneless story
anurajchaudhuri19 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Have you seen those fireworks that go up with a whistling sound but never burst into a colourful spectacle and you feel disappointed? This movie feels exactly like that. It builds up a sense of suspense and mystery in a slow but bearable pace but then it leads you to nothing. No answers to all the questions that rise in your mind. What exactly was the protagonist trying to prove regarding his father? What deaths they were talking about? If that investigation part was not core of the story and was added just to trigger the paranoia and anxiety of the protagonist that he got from his mother as a hereditary trait, why did the director make the audience feel it to be the backbone of the story? When you realise that the investigation was not going to get any conclusive results because that was never to be the core of the story, as an audience, you feel cheated. Then again, why were the townspeople so rude? If they considered Pol (the protagonist's father) to be responsible for the deaths in the town, why vent it out after so many years on a girl who had nothing to do with it? And, if the movie was supposed to be about the psychological condition of the protagonist, why make us feel it not to be so until the end? And just by his father's intervention and his saving him from supposed drowning, the protagonist got cured? Just like that? Well, the story is so unconvincing and you feel cheated.

Even watching it at 1.5x it is boring and draggy
MTonyS19 March 2023
Even watching it at 1.5x speed and skipping 10 seconds every time the movie is boring and draggy. The supposed mystery is ridiculous, the protagonist is a terrible actor and there are a series of scenes of people in the city being hostile that make no sense and are not even explained. One of the worst scripts I've seen in a while, if there ever was a script. I assume that maybe there were more scenes but the movie got so much more boring that they must have cut it because there's a lot of nonsense. All in all, one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Don't waste your time, watch any 1959 Twilight Zone episode that in 25 minutes has more emotion and mystery than this movie pastiche.

It's a hell nah from me...
cryswilliams19 March 2023
This movie was a stream of non-coherent thoughts thrown together in a movie. There's nothing to follow because there is nothing there.

I watched this movie and still have no idea what the hell went on because It didn't make ANY sense... and where is the brother? We see that he hanging on for dear life then... nothing. Does he make it? Does his sister find out what happened to him?

How in the world did this movie get green lit?

If you need some noise while you vacuum, give it a go. But don't bother sitting down to give your full attention to this mess of a movie. You will be disappointed at the loss of 90 minutes of your life that you will never get back.

Slow paced, monotonous and boring...
paul_haakonsen18 March 2023
I stumbled upon the 2023 Dutch mystery thriller titled "Noise" by perusing the Netflix catalogue of movies. And with this movie, from director Steffen Geypens, being a brand new movie that I hadn't already seen, of course I opted to watch it.

The synopsis sounded interesting enough to catch my attention. However, I didn't know what to expect from writers Steffen Geypens, Robin Kerremans and Hasse Steenssens.

However, the storyline was rather slow paced, dull and monotonous. Running at 89 minutes, there was surprisingly little of any worth taking place on the screen. There was nothing scary, nor were there the least bit of thrills or excitement either. And that made for a rather boring movie experience.

Given my limited exposure to the Dutch cinema, then I wasn't familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list. The acting performances in the movie were fairly okay, though the performers had very little material to work with.

Visually then you're not in for anything grant or exciting. But then again, since there was nothing thrilling or scary in the movie, then there really wasn't much use or necessity for special effects.

"Noise" was a swing and a miss of a movie. And believe me when I say that I am never returning to watch this movie a second time, because it was struggle to sit through it the first time. If you enjoy a good mystery thriller, then there are far, far better movies out there to pick from.

My rating of "Noise" lands on a very generous three out of ten stars.

Yeah, it's bad
I love movies-120 March 2023
Super boring and pointless, as most reviewers noted. I can believe that some people liked the movie - different strokes and all that - but I cannot believe that all the 10-, 9- , and 8-star reviews posted around the same time are legit. I absolutely HATE it when people are enlisted to goose the ratings of terrible films. Why not just make a better film and not subject people to yours if it sucks? (sigh)

With 30 minutes remaining of "Noise," I realized there still wasn't a single point of action or suspense. The rude reactions of people in the village when the wife came around was interesting, but then the matter was just kinda dropped. And then, for some inexplicable reason, the wife got all angry at the shopkeeper - the only person who was at all welcoming.

There were a few "spooky" sight gags, but none of them figured into a larger story. I could give specifics, but don't want to risk people not reading my review due to spoilers and making the mistake of tuning into this turkey.

Oh, and that baby cried all the time. He'd drive me nuts, too. That baby sucked.

Not Great
chroberts-120 March 2023
I wasn't going to review, but then I saw all these people raving about it and realized....if real people don't leave honest reviews, movies like this end up with inflated scores that make no sense.

This movie is a hot mess.

It attempts to carry off two parallel plots but it doesn't, really, do justice to either. The "twist" isn't actually a twist so much as a bait and switch kind of thing, where you're led to believe the big mystery is the main plot, and then toward the end you realize it was merely a device to illustrate the main characters deteriorating mental health. And, you also discover, the actual plot is something that's only been hinted at (main characters relationship with his father), which they're going to withhold a key detail on until the end.... I guess as some sort of weak explanation for the ninety minutes of SCREECHING crying baby and shenanigans you've endured.

Maybe it would have benefitted from some flashbacks, IDK. At the end of the day, it didn't do enough to make me care about any of the people involved....and it definitely didn't make me care enough that I wanted to do the work to figure out two thinly stretched together plots.

But, I mean, at least Ward Kerremans is fun to look at.

Mental illness, realistically portrayed
bartvuur29 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
There seem to be very strong opinions concerning this psychological drama. Mental illness (i.c. Postnatal paranoid psychotic episode) is the key plot in this well executed and well acted movie.

We can slowly see the main actor Ward Kerremans getting oversensitive, loosing touch with reality and getting overly involved in paranoid schemes in the same way an actual psychotic episode can evolve (I worked for over 20 years in a psychiatric hospital so this was very recognizable for me). Getting oversensitive, loosing touch with reality (not thiniing of the consequences of the actions like unplugging the freezer), having a short temper, being overly obsessed with stories, losing contact woth the people nearby ... . All part of the dusease, same disease due to which the mother committed suicide.

Fortunately this time the main character gers saved and received medical treatment (cfr' medication besiees the bed at the end of the movie). I don't really understand the reviews who don't see the plot. All the elements are there in the movie and quite easy to link.

In contrary to other reviewers, I thought it was 90 minutes well spent.

It's not that bad to be honest
bekiwij19 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Well, after reading the reviews, I was actually worried that I will be spending my time watching. Absolute garbage! But I'm pleasantly surprised.

So it's a pretty straightforward story, and I didn't find it confusing at all! Movie talks about mental health issues, parental neglect, social media etc . I think Matt inherited the OCD like symptoms from his dad's side and depression/anxiety and paranoia from his moms side, which made him lose his mind after revisiting his childhood home. I believe visiting his birthplace triggered his anxiety and OCD, which gave him paranoia and hallucinations. And I think Matt has been blaming himself secretly for the death of his mother. And he was hurt by his dad's negligence and ridicule towards him. On top of that his wife was the only person with a legitimate income which fuelled his insecurities & convinced him that he's not good enough .I think Matt chose to become a social media influencer because he was craving the attention and validation he was getting through them. I guess being a house dad/husband is making him feel even more insecure about himself. That is why he was slowly turning into his own dad by neglecting and blaming the baby for everything that goes wrong in his life . I guess that's exactly what happened to matt's dad when he was left with a newborn baby, whose wife just committed suicide, and he just dealt with his trauma his own ways ,. His father (Pol)kept blaming himself for saving his son's life which made him a bitter person, and that explains why the Village People are not very close with his family. Seems like his father pushed everyone away including his wife's best friend who was offering to help with the baby. That part is not clear enough to me though!

Matt also did the same when his wife's brother expressed his concerns over his well-being and ended up attacking him and leaving him to bleed alone. But don't worry he doesn't die ha ha!

So at the end, what really happens is Pol comes into this realisation that saving his son's life wasn't a mistake. So he saves him for the second time again at the same house. And Matt also seems like he understood his father loved him although he never showed it. Matt's desire to find justice for his own father started as a way to bond with him quickly, became an obsession and made him a bitter father to his own son. And the fact that he is missing his wife, although she is right next to him, shows that you can be living in the same house but can also be worlds apart from your loved ones If your mind is preoccupied with issues. I assume that he realised it at the end... This brings us to a new day Where you'll find Matt looking at the lake and his wife joining him with the baby. I guess the message here is that they all moved on from past trauma and reconciled. Matt looks fine which suggests that he may have received some form of help/Treatment for his mental health issues. It also leaves the audience with something to think about mental health struggles that we often overlook/neglect and define as bad/selfish or useless!

Whaaaat???
michele-231-43276225 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This takes place at a mansion with expansive grounds, but no gardeners or housekeepers appear to work there.

One adage of good plots is "if you introduce a gun, someone has to shoot it." So what was with the ram head on the wall that was discussed, and the freezer in the basement that was the focus of a couple of scenes?

Why was the freezer full of food if the owner had been in a retirement home for years and nobody had been living there?

Why were the very different ethnicities of the female lead and her brother not explained?

Why did the best friend of the woman who committed suicide (not a spoiler...there's a suicide warning before the movie begins) stop talking to her a year before she died, and have no contact with her son all those years?

How can someone keep digging a hole deep enough to drown in when the water covers their head?

Where were the bodies? Were there bodies?

And then there's the ending...what ending?

WTF were they thinking???
smoothstack-2131821 March 2023
I've never written a movie review before, but holy hell, what on earth was that. They had a few okay ideas, albeit incredibly cliche, and then proceeded to leave every single loose end untied.

The entire factory narrative served 0 purpose. The ending is a crime against film itself. Nothing was resolved at all, leaving every single plot line entirely pointless. I have no idea what the story was or what even happened. I went back and rewatched parts because I thought I must have missed something, but nope. I did not.

Even.giving this film 1 star is generous. They must've watched it back after ending filming and thought "this is utter garbage, but hey we've gotta put something out to appease out investors"

I'm genuinely mad lol.

Good start, bad ending
Cheapthrilluser25 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I rate 3 for the cinematography and 1 for the good start. From the beginning I was wondering how they are going to reveal all these suspenses in 89 mins movie.

It could have been worth if they made it as series for all the suspense they built.

Why the ladies in the shop have to be rude with Liv?

Why the factory story is abandoned when that was seemed to be the main plot?

Why his father is coming to the house in the end as if he knew this would happen?

Writers just messed up the ending so badly. Acting is all good. But with so many endless scenes ruined the film.

I agree not everything is explainable in a movie. But they didn't explain anything here. They wanted to finish the story, so they came up with some bad ending

Poor baby, neglected by both of them.

Watch if you are really bored and if you can accept the ending.

What happened?
Otte123 March 2023
This movie could have been so many things.

It could have been what secrets the town holds for the son who has come back.

It could have been the secrets of the factory fire.

It could have been about the secrets of the father and his previous wife.

It could have been the slow descent of a marriage.

But no, the director/writer teased several ideas, and just tacked on a nonsensical ending that did not resolve any of the questions. This was a complete waste of time. Throw in the fact that the lead actor graduated from the Kneau Reeves/Kristen Stewart acting class, meaning he had the same constipated expression regardless of the scene or emotion he was supposed to have.

Terrible plot, ideal if you want to get a good powernap
ingovdh24 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The movie visuals are well made. But the plot is just nonsense. I could not make any sense of it and for the first time in a long time I really feel like I wasted my time.

  • What does the wife add to the story?

  • The lead actor has a large instagram following but not clear what he does exactly.

  • His father was founder? Owner? Director? No clue.

  • He kills someone in the process for no apparent reason.

  • So what was with all the water at the end?

... There are just a huge amount of loopholes and missing connections in the story.

PS Why do they even have a baby? Half the time they are out and the baby seems to take care of itself.

Nothing to see here kids
tiana-1572621 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I was patient, having been drawn in with solid acting performances, a cute baby, lush countryside and a small town mystery promisingly enticing. I watched in hope that something would happen. That something would explain the spooky factory, the guilt, the chemical spill at the centre of the storyline, the floor breathing, the dead brother in the basement.. and then it ends with all the "noise" of a silent fart. Literally nothing is resolved, except that the film is suddenly not about an of those hooks, but about mental illness in the family. What?!!

The director obviously wanted to make everyone feel dumb after watching this. There is no other explanation for this lump of dung. How anyone in Netflix thought this deserved to be

Please please don't watch. You'll be glad you didn't.

Good idea, bad and boring way of tackling it
diane_berger18 March 2023
This movie deals with the idea of post-partum depression, which is a recognized, unfortunately not enough understood pathology even in our modern world. Therefore I granted it a passing grade, were it only for its purpose and intent.

Nonetheless, the movie is pretty slow and I must admit I had a hard time watching it till the end, since the whole point is not made so clear, it unfolds very slowly and actually getting the point is not an easy task for the viewer... The actors are doing their best, I should admit, but the script is slow and hard to follow.

Good intent, I must say, but still not a solid script, not enough build-up...

Subtle, well done!
witchy_poo22 March 2023
Definately Watch! There are clues as to what, why and then where. Everything is there. All is answered. Just have to watch, pay attention and read (the translations of) the article headlines Matti brings up on his screen. Must read (the translation of) what Liv is reading in the photo album. Its all there. The reason why everyone in the village is stand-offish is assumed by what is in the articles' headliners. Very good movie... ending was complete... all questions were answered or assumed 'finished'.... (any other word here might give something away). Very much enjoyed this movie after reading so many negative reviews. Will watch again to see if I missed any other subtle clues. 8 out of 10.

Not bad for a Belgian movie
kuncarlos-8465321 March 2023
I think this movie was average, but seeable. Worst thing for me was when they ate those kiwis with skin, that was some really crazy stuff.

The actors did a very good job and this is maybe the best part of the movie. The story is a bit short and that is why it lacks a more background story, but maybe we are too used to series nowadays?

I would recommend this movie for a lazy afternoon, don´t expect too much, but don´t be disappointed neither, take it for what is is: an average European movie.

At some moments the movie was a bit predictable and not too original, that is why for me it is not more than a 6.

Obnoxious movie
kreatea22 March 2023
I have seen many boring movies, thx to Netflix, but this one needs a special mentions, the cry of the baby is made into a "Noise" that plays in your head..you automatically fast forward the movie, and the ending is so pointless.... If there is no good script, then people should avoid making films..... Few shots of the greenery and nature around is the only redeeming factor here...If you are planning to watch it, take aspirin with you... This is one of those movie where you think a slow build up with lead to something, but lo and behold the movie starts with a whimper, and ends with one... there's nothing to pull the plot... I am burning with the thought that this movie will be lost so quick that in the near future I may play it gain thinking it is some "new thriller"......hope that never happens ;)

Do Not Waste Your Time! You Have Been Warned
heykateforever6 November 2023
Many other reviewers in here have already pointed out the many completely stupid loose ends and terrible plot nondevelopments in this movie. Honestly? It had a great idea. Not sure what that idea was exactly. There were so many ways this bits and pieces of a story could have gone to make it make sense. Instead, it wandered all over the place, never once landing any movement of a story that could have developed. I am in awe at how bad this movie is! And I have seen some stinkers. But what was most annoying, and why I didn't turn it off like I normally would have, was that it kept going down interesting threads and then just dropping them.

In all my reviews of bad movies, at least I could describe a cohesive plot. This one just kept going down side streets with dead ends. I have no idea what the story was about, why ANYBODY would invest good money in this painfully absurd nonstory? Now THOSE are the most interesting things about this movie. Just save yourself the time and effort unless you have an overactive imagination and can make the plot up yourself. Us regular folks like a REAL story, with scenes that make sense and progress to some sort of if not satisfying, at least understandable ending. You have been warned! Pass this non-movie by and watch All the Light We Cannot See instead! Now THAT was truly wonderful movie-making. Flush this one away!

It's such a hot mess. There are 10 different plots going on that never have an ending to them. The whole time you're scared the baby is going to die. The husband fills you with rage. You have no idea what the old man is talking about. Is the friend dead? You'll never know. What about the chemical factory? You won't know that either. Idk why the meat place is so grouchy. Did the lady at the store have a thing for Matt's dad? Why do the parents NEVER interact with their baby? Poor guy spends the whole movie by himself. Why did he dig a hole in their basement?! There are no answers!

Seriously... do NOT waste your time.
