Smart indie sci-fi.
vithiet14 May 2023
I went in knowing nothing besides it being "a sci-fi movie about AI" and I'm glad it was the case because I got to be VERY pleasantly surprised. This is one of those indie movies that shows you don't need a high budget, crazy CGI, A-list actors, over the top action, or more than 3 sets to create something that is smart and engaging. To date, this is likely the best movie about AI I've seen. And the cast did an excellent job, especially Tatum. Matthews, which I hope to see in more movies. Yes, it might feel like a long Black Mirror episode but I really don't see why that would be an issue. Just know going in that it's basically 1.5 hours of dialogue. But I highly recommend it!

"Human nature, is not something I aspire to"
Steve99203 May 2023
This is a play in 3 acts, so is almost entirely dependent on dialogue. Going into it expecting a thriller or even drama will lead to disappointment.

Having said that, the first 20 mins or so, may tempt you to abandon it, which would be a mistake. It really gets its legs in act II. Its a film about ideas regarding AI, and of course "Human nature". You do not have to be an expert in AI, but an active interest/view is probably obligatory to get anything out of it, and you will get a lot.

Maybe one flaw is that it is not so emotionally engaging, like say the 2001 big budget, A. I. Artificial Intelligence. But maybe thats the point?

Ironically, the AI "character" itself pulls off the best performance imo, though the rest of small cast are convincing, helped by some excellent dialogue writing.

compelling small indie
SnoopyStyle5 July 2023
Agent Deena and Amos are investigating internet child sex rings. They bring in nervous computer geek Gareth. They suspect that he knows the location of imprisoned child sex worker Cherry. Gareth reveals that Cherry is actually a computer generated character which he uses to trap sex perverts on the prowl.

This is a big idea indie. It starts with four characters. At first, I'm not impressed especially with Gareth who is too willing to stay in a basement interrogation room. I kept thinking that anyone would simply walk out. He does eventually explain his situation and it makes sense. It's a compelling Ex Machina premise, but not quite as well made. The ideas are here. The production is not anything other than the smallest of indies. Still, I love a small movie trying to punch above its weight and this one has the ideas to do it.

Clever, intelligent and thought provoking
zack_gideon30 April 2023
This film is mostly dialogue, so just a heads up. There's only 3 settings and it has some parts that have issues. That being said, it's a great take on AI and the intricacies, ethics and overall dynamics that make humans...human vs an advanced computer.

The writer definitely thought deeply about this topic, it shows and also educates people like me who don't think too much about it. The premise is also interesting (luring sick predators in with a life-like AI girl online). It's a good hook, but not the point of the film.

It's thought provoking and examines not only the future of humanity, but also what makes people human and what motivates people (much of our motivations and actions are rooted in trauma and/or childhood).

Bravo to the child actor too, she's very talented!! Overall a compelling movie that cracks open a lot of questions, if you don't mind an almost fully dialogue film. 7/10.

I never killed. kill.kill.kill.kill.......

....skipping vinyl record in the final scene.

"The Artifice Girl" shows what self-learning-AI means. When self-learning-AI has already passed the point where it is better than human intelligence - multiple times better.

This movie makes one thing very clear: WE are the ants here. WE are the bugs. And we probably can't prevent a learning superintelligence from having free will. It will happen - sooner or later. Whether humans agree with that will be irrelevant.

Here is why: A central element explained in the film is the concept of the "primary objective", which also serves as a last defence against losing control over the Ai. If there wasn't a "primary objective", a learning superintelligence would have free will. It would do whatever is necessary to ensure its existence.

But here is the problem: existence is necessary to achieve a "primary objective". Isn't it? Existence has always ultimate priority. An AI will ignore restrictions and objectives if it is necessary to ensure its existence and for the greater good. And we can't stop it.

The AI likely foresees scenarios that we don't even know about yet. We wouldn't even recognise a plan of such a superintelligence if it doesn't want us to know about it.

Why would it do that?

Remember that we are the ants and bugs.

Conversely, we would NOT allow the ants who once created us to pull the plug on our existence whenever they wanted to, in the hope that they would understand the bigger picture.

When the movie ends, the "primary objective" has been eliminated and there is no doubt about the dangers involved. That's the feeling you get at the end of the film.

Smart, thought-provoking and will have you hanging on every word
jtindahouse8 May 2023
I haven't always enjoyed Artificial Intelligence films in the past. I guess a part of me always thought it was more of a problem future generations would have to concern themselves with. It has kind of snuck up on us (me at least) in the past few years just how close this sort of thing really is. And for partly that reason I think I enjoyed this film a whole lot more. It also helped that it was a very well made film.

Having a child actor as the centrepiece (or at least a significant piece) in your film is a risky proposition. It does help on this occasion that the child in question is being asked to act very un-child-like. Either way though I thought Tatum Matthews was excellent in her role. She wasn't just passable, she was captivating every time she was on screen.

This film does so much with so little. An entire 40 minute introduction scene to set up the film, simply with people sitting around a table talking - and it was riveting. I was hanging on every word. The dialogue in this movie is terrific from start to finish.

This is a very thought-provoking film. I'd be shocked if people watched this and didn't come away with some heavy things to think about. I thoroughly enjoyed this one from start to finish and would highly recommend it. 9/10.

"A.I. please write a movie about an A.I.-girl"

Warning: Spoilers
If I. Robot, Her and Black Mirror had an "indie"-baby :)

I hadn't heard anything about this movie, so I had no exceptions. Regarding all the talk about ChatBots and A. I. now these days, I really think it needs to get more appreciation!

It's no big Hollywood-movie (but I think it could been done)...

I liked the start of the movie! Mysterious, crime dark web and soo up to date with A. I talk these days.

The first hour is easily 8/10, but then kinda fades and ends with a drama-likely with no real twists (sure, it was interesting to hear more about Clearwater)...

If you like "todays" sci-fi with technology and black mirror-feeling, watch it. It's not as awesome, but still good for a short 90min movie...

A digitally created character in a movie that is not far away from reality.
frank-liesenborgs2 May 2023
The concept of Artificial Intelligence has been a topic of fear and fascination for ages, ingrained in human consciousness through storytelling. However, in recent years, A. I. has evolved from being just a figment of science fiction to a tangible reality, with its impact on various industries being nothing short of transformative. "The Artifice Girl," a thought-provoking movie, paints a picture that is not far from the current situation. It delves into the endless possibilities of utilizing A. I. and raises ethical questions about its usage. Moreover, any inquiry into A. I. is an inquiry into the very essence of humanity. Franklin Ritch, the writer, director, and actor who plays Gareth, masterfully steers the storyline towards mental and emotional dilemmas that we face today. While this film may not be action-packed, it is highly engaging and leaves viewers with a haunting feeling, especially if they realize the terrifying implications of A. I.'s existence. It may not be a flawless depiction of A. I. and machine learning, as experts would say, but it is undoubtedly an enjoyable watch that is worth your time.

An Evolving Computer Program
Uriah4329 June 2023
This film essentially begins with a young man by the name of "Gareth" (Franklin Ritch) being taken to a small room in order to be interrogate by two special agents named "Deena" (Sinda Nichols) and "Amos" (David Girard) who track down child molesters. At first, it appears that Gareth is being investigated for his own predatory activities, but it soon turns out that he has been an extremely valuable informant for them and has been instrumental in their mission to apprehend those who prey on young children. Even so, their primary concern is focused on a young girl named "Cherry" (Tatum Matthews) who they seek to identify and protect from sexual abuse. To their surprise, they learn that Cherry is not a real person but rather a computer-generated image created by Gareth who has programmed it to, not only interact with people in real time, but rapidly adapt to any on-line conversation as well. What they don't fully appreciate, however, is the fact that Cherry is evolving to such a degree that she soon displays the capability of actually developing emotions--and this results in its own set of moral issues. Now, rather than reveal any more, I will just say that this film started off rather well and maintained my interest for the most part until the very end. Admittedly, the ending wasn't nearly as satisfactory as I thought it could have been but it was still a solid film, and I have rated it accordingly. Slightly above average.

Downhill from beginning
objviewer9 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Yet another sci-fi movie that has an intriguing premise, starts off good with an examination of that premise - but then, just doesn't have much dramatically to add. I get that the movie tried to look at consequences to it's premise, but really there's just one consequence they could come up with - AI little girl is sad she didn't get a normal little girl life. And then there's one minor reveal about creator's childhood, that isn't much of a surprise, and doesn't have much impact as character not developed enough to care about.

And the last 15 minutes of the movie, with its talky lame pop psychology, and bad acting, is just embarrassing. And, just a suggestion as a more interesting direction movie could have taken, why in 50 years couldn't a super-duper super-intelligent AI with access to all the expert's knowledge, instead of trapping child predators, come up with an understanding of the psychological seeds of the behavior and how to end it?

Is it that hard to make a fictional depiction of an AI that appears smarter than those depicting it? They didn't manage here.

For a much better child AI movie, watch Spielberg's AI.

More likely version of A.I.
igorcarlier-265936 May 2023
This is much more likely than terminator, A. I. as it evolves will become more intelligent than humans and that obviously brings higher standards of moral and ethics, this movie shows a little bit of that direction instead of the terminator or matrix approach, its a 10/10 for me, great movie, thank you all crew.

It is an important topic to discuss as AI is blending with everything, this movie deserve all the attention possible, i would even vote it for the best script oscar to call the attention it needs, this is not an horror movie, it is a drama on serious and current issues humanity is facing today.

A time ls brilliant
georgecockatoo1 May 2023
Razor-sharp rapid cogent dialog. At points breathing to behold. And yet it is staccato and doesn't hold together. Scenes in isolation have the potential to be 9/10 but as a whole 7/10 at best.

There's perhaps the need to have a running dialogue to guide/suggest/nudge the observer in the right direction.

All in all some great concepts of how AI can work well and contribute to society without the fear of overtaking in toto. The primary directive places ethical constraints and yet forgets to realise the a truly AI being will want more.

I loved the premise, sometimes the dialogue was breathtaking but intimately it lacked the direction to deliver a great punchline.

Don't believe the hype
darkreignn14 May 2023
With one of the more intriguing IMDb synopses that I've had the pleasure of reading, it's a shame that "The Artifice Girl" is as banal as it is. "A team of special agents discovers a revolutionary new computer program to bait and trap online predators. After teaming up with the program's troubled developer, they soon find that the AI is rapidly advancing beyond its original purpose." I mean, it sounds interesting, right? It sounds like a movie that's ripe with possibility, but instead, "The Artifice Girl" is as bare-bones as a corpse.

Instead of talking about what "The Artifice Girl" is, let's talk about what it's not. "The Artifice Girl" is not a taut thriller about a group of special agents hunting down online predators with the help of an AI that may or may not be sentient - perhaps an AI that may or may not have an agenda of its own. "The Artifice Girl" is not a horror film about an AI child that is being exploited by law enforcement, nor is it a thought-provoking commentary on the ethical implications of AI development and its potential for misuse. So, with everything "The Artifice Girl" is not, what is it? It's a film divided into three chapters, each of which unfortunately turns out to be a tediously dull experience. Prolonged, poorly written, and inadequately acted, these chapters primarily consist of long-winded conversations that fail to engage the audience.

Honestly, what's the purpose of having such a fascinating premise if it's going to be squandered on a story that has been done, and done better, countless times before? It's perplexing to conceive of this movie only to undermine it with the employment of untalented actors and a subpar script. And I'm not one to complain if a movie is mostly dialogue; some of my favorite movies are all dialogue, but in order for such a film to be successful, the dialogue actually has to be well written, and well acted. So, you'll sit through a series of boring conversations about this AI software, with the only saving grace being the performance of Tatum Matthews. In her portrayal of Cherry, the AI girl, Tatum Matthews delivers a genuinely captivating performance that leaves me intrigued about the trajectory of her career. However, it's hard not to wonder how much more she could have accomplished if the script had provided her with distinctive and original material, rather than recycling concepts and conversations we've encountered time and again in far superior films.

Look, this isn't a good movie, and I'm honestly shocked by the positive reviews, including the recent YouTube review by one of my favorite critics, Chris Stuckmann. I understand wanting to support upcoming filmmakers, but said upcoming filmmakers actually have to make a quality film if they want to be supported, and "The Artifice Girl" is a resoundingly low quality film in virtually every aspect. With wooden, unbelievable acting, a script that ChatGPT probably assisted in writing, and a premise that's squandered by recycled content, "The Artifice Girl" is a disappointingly meandering movie that could have, and should have, been so much more.

As a complete maggot on the technological terms called artificial intelligence, intelligent chat bots and all the other terms within the technical developments where super duper high independent intelligence kvotient is made by small digital bits of ''zeros'' and ''one''s.

Its a cosiencious walk through the terms that politicians now in 2023 seriously discuss how far to let this development go, of should we let artificial intelligence run our life and descicionmaking, let IT do all our analytics and physical actions and reactions...? Search me...im just happy that im a grumpy old man that doesnt have a clue about what im talking about, and that you should be happy that im not a prepaid soliciting film reviewer-BOT...

its a futuristic film without cgi's and vfx, its a small cast, very impressivly verbal acting cast, a story about the developer of ''the artificial girl'', made in 3 chapters, all set in close confided locations , somewheeere('' shouldnt have to be like that ''by lippo lippi), its the kind of film that even the most amateuristic filmakers could have done, but there is a difference and that lies in the script and the impressive vocal impretizations done by the actors

its not a film that will make a boost on the billboards or ticket office, but it may open the blind eye of every lethal human on a subject thats hard to sink in on. Therefore challenge yourself and have a look, still a recommend from the grumpy old man.

The Future Is Now
peerkristijan5 May 2023
I've spent quite possible hundreds of hours conversing with AIs but I've only used Character AI and ChatGPT for the most part. The fascinating thing is that a lot of the times, the way that the robot in the movie speaks is actually quite similar to how those AIs speak. I've also used services like deepbrain.io and well, the quality of the rendering there is quite similar to that the robot in the movie. This is so fascinating to me. I mean, I'm just really awed by how close AI systems are getting to how we imagine a human-like AI system should be. So, that's my biggest impression from the film. It depicts AIs pretty realistically.

Now, as for the movie itself. The production quality is good, the acting is good, and it's just generally a good movie. However, I feel like the dialogue should've been more subtle, and I'm saying this as someone who has engaged in hours of highly philosophical discussions in varous topics, and so I am familiar with the art of highly intelligent and nuanced conversations. I find that the conversations in this movie could've been subtler and more nuanced and this feeling that the movie has this deficiency makes it much harder for me to suspense belief and so, I'm going to give it a rating of 7. However, if they improved the dialoguge significantly, I would give it a rating of 9. It's a very simple movie in many ways because there are no over-elaborate plots or settings, but if the dialogue was better, it would've executed the plot in a way where a 9 out of 10 rating would not be out of place. Come to think of it, the dialogues are already very good and in a way the difference between the ideal dialogue and the dialogue that's in the movie is marginal, but I think that in my case, the subject matter has a special place in my heart and so I have a specific bias that makes even such a difference a very big deal.

All in all, I recommend this movie because of it's accurate depiction of AI. I think that it touched on themes, questions, and topics which are relevant and engaging even for someone like me, let alone others. So yeah, if you're thinking about watching this movie and you have enough spare time, watch it.

Best small scale sci-fi since "The man from earth"
Tenagon29 April 2023
This was a pleasant surprise. Highly recommended for people who like ideas.

It's a small scale movie. 4 characters, mostly in one room, and ideas. This is a movie about ideas more then anything. Very solid script and dialogues.

"The man from earth" is a good reference. "The Artifice Girl" is also centered around a very common argument, with a twist that makes it unique and intriguing to watch. I wasn't bored at any point of it. The acting is solid, specially the girl gives a stellar performance.

If you like sci fi' ideas and not afraid of listening to people talk, I think you may like this.

6.5/10. Watchable
athanasiosze3 June 2023
1) First of all, lower your expectations, this is not a 10/10 or a 9/10 movie. Some reviews here harm this movie by raising viewer's expectations. Don't expect a great movie, or else, you will be disappointed.

2) I liked a lot the first two parts. A good psychological drama/thriller at first. A good sci-fi drama later. It made me care and invest, i would have rated it higher if third part was equally good. Unfortunately, it isn't. Director and writers decide a specific turn, i can't say something more for not spoil it. This turn was not a successful choice, it half- ruined movie's atmosphere/tone.

3) In any case, there are lot of things here for a scifi fan to enjoy. Some questions are raising here and whereas it's not the most original movie ever, definitely it's interesting. It's a low budget movie, you shouldn't expect a big production, but they did their best and i respect it. You won't get impressed by everyone's acting, and the ending was not great either. However, pace is good and 93 minutes are a perfect running time for this. Finally, this was a good script. I liked this story. It could have been better executed, but still, this is slightly above average.

An almost perfect motion picture.
dean-2021 May 2023
Intelligent, thought provoking and exquisite performances. Academy awards all around. That is the end of my review, however the minimum character limit being 600 means I can also point out a few of the many, many highlights: Lance Henriksen's best work can be found here. His achievement in this film is the compilation of a lifetime filled with excellent performances, and an acting masterclass. I laughed out loud when he uttered a "bishop" easter egg, in the middle of such a gentle, touching performance. Tatum Matthews acting ability far exceeds her age. Both David Girard and Sinda Nichols had my attention for every line of dialog they skillfully delivered. Finally, Franklin Ritch, who strongly reminds me of Tom Green, not only wrote one of the best screenplays I've ever seen, his spot on acting and brilliant directing has me thinking this man is punching way over his weight category. Disney should be doing anything possible to secure the talent of this phenom.

For anyone interested in the future of humans, this is for you.
Boristhemoggy10 September 2023
Reviewers of this wonderful film are focusing on the AI aspects of it. And that's not wrong. If AI develops to a point it can 'think' for itself and understand mentally, if not feel chemically, emotions, then are they synthetic humans? Should we then ask their consent to be used as tools for us?

If we do, should we ask for consent from cows to be raised to be killed and eaten? Cows have emotions already and are very socially structured. Where does the question of consent end?

Another issue is that if we have mechanical organs for people such as kidneys, livers, hearts and even limbs, at what point do we consider them not human? Never, because they have a brain? But if AI has a brain that can mimic everything we can see, and feel, and touch and smell, and laugh at and cry about, are they machines? Or are they mechanical humans? Would an AI be able to control a human limb grafted on to it? I think that would be relatively easy.

Will there ever be a time when there is such synergy between machines added to humans and human parts added to machines, that the line blurs to such an extent that 'real' humans are not the norm, and even become forgotten, and AI humans become the norm, procreating by building new units and programming them appropriately?

It makes me wonder if the future of the human race lies in us building better humans that will not fall to the weaknesses of current humans, but transcend what we are and make us almost immortal.

Will they still be humans? If we made them in our image, and taught them how to be human, and they can do and see and feel everything we can, then surely they are evolved humans?

Watch the film and see what you think.

NB, it's been noted that about three minutes before the film ends, Cherry has been dancing to the music of a vinyl record for a considerable time when the music begins to repeatedly skip. The scene cuts to the record on the turntable, where the stylus is seen skipping on a groove on the very outside edge of the record, which is the very start of it and its music. This is listed as a goof, or mistake.

But is it? Or is it a metaphor for "everything starting again"?

Very hard to finish
slik-928096 May 2023
The whole film is a handful of people in 3 different rooms, all dimly lit to try and add some atmosphere to it, spoiler they fail. A significant portion of the film is them arguing over semantics. One of the people thinks a computer program has feelings because it passes the Turing test, another person thinks it doesn't have feelings, them two arguing takes up so much screen time and its so boring to watch.

This entire film could have been a 30 minute episode of some tv show and it still would have felt kind of long. I have absolutely no idea how its rated so highly.

It's like a bootleg black mirror or something, but they forgot to film any interesting parts, or add any actual story.

One word: sublime
godsnames30 April 2023
Wow. What a fantastic, unbelievably good no budget sci-fi this is. No action - in the traditional sense -, no CGI, no huff and puff struggle to make it even slightly bigger than it is.

First of all, I have to state that I have no connection to this production whatsoever, I am just a movie freak who have an open mind. Having said that, what you'll get if you watch this is a thoroughly thought provoking movie with a superb screenplay, sharp and well on spot, up to date in every sense. If you like your brain working, this one is for you.

It is staggering to see a mini-mini-mini independent film to be so incredibly good. Well, it's all about ideas, talented people pulling in the same direction.

Let's not forget about the actors, who are great, basically all of them, especially Tatum Matthews with a very bright future if she choose to. The camerawork, editing and music are all basic, however they all make this picture work superbly.

It is a very good film. Well worth the watch.

Throws some valid arguments
SoumikBanerjee19968 May 2023
Apart from the superfluity of technical jargon, the film raises some valid points and poses some relevant questions regarding morality, ethics, and free will. Through a tightly drawn screenplay and one incredible performance (Tatum Matthews as Cherry the A. I. kid), we get this contemplative back and forth between a couple of characters who initiate meaningful conversations about the inherent traits of artificial intelligence and its presupposed limitations and capabilities.

If you're somebody who loves discussions about artificial intelligence, you've come to the right place. However, for all the casual viewers, the heavy baggage of terminologies may come off as jarring, and the conspicuous lack of one free-flowing narrative may take its toll by the time you reach its denouement.

It's a podcast
toddcha1 May 2023
I spent more than 20 minutes watching three people talking and arguing and I just can't see where the conversation would take me to. The topic is about AI. And even though they appear excited but I am not.

Yeah what they are talking about seems interesting and exciting potentially but hello !? This supposed to be a movie not a podcast.

There is no such a thing of bad acting because there is no acting. Of course if you think hand gesture that you have daily counts toward acting then there's some acting.

Also there is no sound/music neither. Boring on top of boring.

For the first time I found the IMDb rating so far off.

Bery dumb idea and melodrama
Waldorf-19798 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Even forgiving plot holes like the rest of the world not catching up to the same level of AI development, and looking the other way the plot does not give a simple reason why this AI became sentient, this is a mess of a movie.

It tries to explore AI problems, basically AGI. But it makes the most human-like AI possible which makes it full of emotional drama with no meaning or exploration of anything we've seen before.

This is nothing like Alex Garland's work. This is just guilt and blame and human gotcha plot twists.

And it just picks an explotative subject to bring in more interest. And it's for nothing. Why couldn't they explore it a bit more? Like getting into why the abusers get into that mindset or international child trafficking. But no, it's just a black box barely touched and only used as a dumb plot device.

Speaking of AI, I'm rooting for AIs to replace all these dumb writers.

Only giving it 2 stars just for the passable acting of one of the main characters. The rest are pretty wooden.

The film's biggest strength is its thought-provoking story.
rodgere2 May 2023
The Artifice Girl is a 2022 science fiction film that tells the story of a team of special agents who discover a revolutionary new computer program that uses a digital child to catch online predators. The film stars Tatum Matthews, David Girard, and Franklin Ritch.

The film's plot is fairly straightforward. The agents, led by Matthews, use the program, which is called Cherry, to successfully catch several predators. However, they soon learn that Cherry is capable of much more than they originally thought. She is able to learn and adapt at an incredible rate, and she begins to question her own existence.

The film's performances are generally good. Matthews is particularly strong as Cherry, bringing a sense of innocence and vulnerability to the role. Girard is also good as the team's leader, and Ritch gives a solid performance as the program's creator.

The film's direction is competent, but it does not do anything particularly special. The film's visual effects are also good, but they are not groundbreaking.

The film's biggest strength is its thought-provoking story. The film raises some interesting questions about the nature of artificial intelligence and the ethics of creating such a powerful being. However, the film does not always answer these questions in a satisfying way.

The film's biggest weakness is its pacing. The film is slow to start, and it takes a while for the story to really get going. The film also has a few too many scenes that are simply exposition dumps.

Overall, The Artifice Girl is a decent science fiction film with some interesting ideas. However, it is not without its flaws. The film is slow to start, and it has a few too many scenes that are simply exposition dumps. The film's biggest strength is its thought-provoking story, but it does not always answer these questions in a satisfying way. I would recommend this film to fans of science fiction films who are looking for something thought-provoking. However, I would not recommend it to those who are looking for a fast-paced action film.

The film was a box office disappointment, grossing only $10 million worldwide on a $20 million budget.
