A shame Blue Sky Studios never finished it.

Nimona has become a somewhat unique and troubled production, partly because it was based on a web comic that got its film rights picked up by Blue Sky Studios (sometime after Disney bought Fox I think) only to be cancelled after 75% of the film was completed; then Netflix and Annapurna Pictures came into the rescue and saved the film from oblivion. And it's become a success too: people are already making fan-art, remixes, and reviews are glowing for this unlikely underdog of a film.

Now the film itself is like a cyberpunk Legend of Zelda mixed with trace elements of Blade Runner, Zootopia, Monster's Inc, Kick Ass, and the subversive fantasy tropes of Shrek (with additional satire for society and government institutions). It's also a good, briskly paced time in this medieval cyberpunk land of flying horse carriages, glowing swords and doe-eyed children evoking anime kids and Disney heart melters too. The vibe of this film... it's unlike anything from PIXAR, DreamWorks or even Blue Sky; and maybe that was part of the reason the project suddenly ceased to be. It's good that Netflix picked the film up RIGHT from where Blue Sky left off.

Nimona has a world in it that's just begging to be explored even further, because the film itself is like the tip of an iceberg in a self-aware way with its in-universe life of dragon-themed cereals, toys and of course the soldiers being the Gate Keepers of a world dictated by myth. So what other myths exist in the world of Nimona? Who knows?

As a film Nimona is un-pretentious entertainment that knows it's audience likes multilayered worlds that live beyond the screen, that animation is best when it's a remix of long-standing tropes and styles making for an experience that's unconventional yet it becomes a foundation in itself.

Nimona gets 4/5 stars. 8/10 IMDb points.

I didn't know what to expect, but it wasn't that!

I went in knowing nothing of the comics or the troubled production history, so I didn't have any expectations. I thought this would be just an entertaining animation movie on par with most Pixar products as I thought it would have more of an edge than Disney movies. So I was very pleasantly surprised by the originality and quality of Nimona! Yes, some parts are a bit predictable but in this day and age that's almost impossible to avoid so that's not an issue for me. But the rest, from the story to the directing and of course the gorgeous animation, is top notch and made me sad it was already over when the end credits rolled out! Highly recommended!

Surprising, Quirky and Heartfelt

This was a huge surprise. Nimona won my heart with its spirited story and well thought out characters. I loved how it sneakily introduced so much humour into the story while maintaining a heartfelt plot that asked its characters questions regarding trust, belief and justice.

One might argue that the story is predictable. But honestly, why even predict this storyline? The entire movie is so well executed - the characters are great, the chemistry between them is great, the direction is great, the soundtrack is great, the animation is artful, I honestly don't have the time to predict what's going to happen. All of it was easily enough for me to stay in the moment. If the execution was mediocre or bad, then yes, my mind would've started predicting and nitpicking the movie. This is the exact reason why a movie like Avatar works perfectly for me. That's the importance of executing a story perfectly.

In fact, I actually didn't think the movie would take the direction that it did. And the emotionally-heavy final act of this movie, just tugged at my heartstrings.

Nimona's character is actually brilliantly written. Her body language, mannerisms, touchy opinions about specific topics are the little things that are always really important to make a great character. This script did that very well. And some humour, I thought, was actually very innovative and that made it more hilarious. The fast pace, and the gutsy plot just elevated the thrill and entertainment. The chemistry between the 2 main characters is brilliantly done.

This movie was a very surprising, entertaining and heartfelt experience and I'd highly recommend watching it. It's a Netflix original so it's available there.

Saved from cancellation, Nimona overcomes its production challenges to give us something funny, heartbreaking, and masterful

In a technologically advanced kingdom, the kingdom and its citizens are protected by an institute of knights who carry on the traditions set forth by their heroine Gloreth who as legend held slayed a monster to protect a village. Ballister Blackheart (Riz Ahmend) has trained to be such a knight despite his lack of noble heritage but has been given the opportunity with the support of the Queen (Lorrain Toussaint) and his fellow knight and lover Ambrosius Goldenloin (Eugene Lee Yang). When Ballister is framed for the Queen's assassination he finds himself a wanted fugitive and loses his arm at Ambrosius' hand. As Ballister starts making plans to unravel who framed him, he attracts the attention of shapeshifter Nimona (Chloe Grace Moretz) who wishes to be a sidekick to a "supervillain" and believes Ballister fits the bill, despite Ballister's assertions that he's not one. With Nimona's help, Ballister unravels revelations about what truly happened.

Nimona is the long awaited adaptation of the 2015 graphic novel of the same name by ND Stevenson that was originally published in a series of chapters on Tumblr. Nimona was acquired by 20th Century Fox's animation division shortly after publication of its graphic novel form and actually made it through a significant part of development until of course Disney bought Fox and shut down Blue Sky Studios and many in development projects with Nimona being among them despite being about 75% complete at the time. According to former staffers Disney pushed back on the film's LGBTQ themes and the same sex kiss which may have been a factor in cancelling it. Thankfully like other cancelled animated Fox projects like The Magician's Elephant the forthcoming Escape from Hat, and the in development adaptation of Eric Powell's The Goon, Nimona found itself revived as a collaboration between Annpurna Pictures and Netflix and after an 8 year journey and I'm happy to say it was well worth the wait.

First on a purely technical level, Nimona looks fantastic. The creative team have done a fantastic job adapting the simple but charming art style of Stevenson's comic and with the film's mixture of cel shading and shadows it really does feel like a graphic novel come to life with some dynamic movements and designs that are truly breathtaking to look at. The animation on Nimona is especially to be commended because the way she moves and shifts from one form to another is near pitch perfect in its execution which is further complimented by the expressive faces each of the characters has that offers a wide range of emotions. Artistically speaking, the Kingdom in Nimona is a really unique take which I can only describe as "Medieval Futuristic" and its very much a mixture of Princess Bride by way of Blade Runner in terms of its mixture of fairy tale iconography mixed with holographic billboards and hover cars that creates a world that's got some many amazing details intermixed to make this feel like a living breathing world.

But Nimona doesn't rest on its visuals alone and they're in service of a great story with compelling characters. While needless to say the creative team have made some changes adapting the episodic graphic novel to fit in a feature film narrative, the story's core remains very much in tact even in spite of little details and side characters having been excised for the sake of a more focused narrative. Riz Ahmed is quite good as Ballister and his relationship with Ambrosius equally well played by Eugene Lee Yang is an endearing one that you do get invested in and it's probably been slightly strengthened in translation as the film starts off more tonally consistent as opposed to Nimona which started off more anarchic and silly while gradually getting darker (not a criticism of the book, they're both good in their own way). But at the center is undeniably Chloe Grace Moretz as Nimona who is pitch perfect in her casting and delivery. Moretz does incredibly well in the role as her rapid fire and hard edged delivery is well complimented by the animation team in a manner that reminded me of the perfect marriage of animation and performance that went into Robin Williams' Genie from Aladdin. Moretz gets some solid laughs out of her appetite for destruction, but she also gives us a heartbreaking undercurrent to her performance that we see more of as it's revealed her abrasive edge is a shroud for her inner pain. All these characters and threads culminate in a really satisfying way and I won't dare spoil it for you.

Nimona is a great animated film in a year where solid animation hasn't exactly been in short supply. I really can't say enough good about this film other than you owe it to yourselves to see it. Funny, exciting, heartbreaking, visually interesting. At this point I'm just repeating myself.

Heavier than Expected, Unafraid to Break Stuff

Nimona is a heavier movie than expected, but for the most part in a good way. One character is severely wounded early in the film, which sets the tone for an animated film that isn't quite aimed at young-young kids but is more aimed at a "ready for the Lion King" age range. That was surprising given the trailer, but not bad.

The character of Nimona is fascinating; she's a shape-shifter character who doesn't clearly have a "base form" but takes advantage of that characteristic in the full range. Whale, Gorilla, Ostrich--it's all fair game, and she enjoys the transformations and causing chaos generally. If you enjoyed the shapeshifting in the Dungeons and Dragons movie, this will be right up your alley.

It's based on a comic by Nate Stephenson, who is the same creator that made She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. So, think the energy and vibe of She-Ra if you happened to see that, but with a much better animation budget. (And if you end up liking this film, and haven't seen She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, that might be a good follow-up).

a good concept with flawed pacing

Nimona was an interesting movie to say the least. A sci-fi/medieval kingdom walled off is a decent concept. The idea of a posh british knight who has to get along with an angsty teen girl with shape shifting powers is also a good concept.

The main problem with the movie though, is the pacing. From the opening scene the movies plot gets dialed up to eleven, and gets way too far way too fast. Now i know i may sound like a hypocrite saying that when ive trashed other movies for not getting started soon enough, but theres also such a thing as getting started too fast. It pretty much has the same problem that i had with "the mitchells vs the machines" but even worse. The movie has a lot of plot holes and forced moments throughout the script. Im trying really hard not to spoil anything here, but theres this one scene where the 2 main characters manage to gain a piece of evidence from another character, but its never explained why that character didnt just make it public themself, like why did they hold onto it and not tell anyone about it?

Also the 2 main characters bond just way too quickly. With a movie like this you know theyre going to go the route of "2 main characters hate eachother but eventually grow on eachother" but they again did that way too quickly. They literally go from resenting eachother to being the best of friends in just one scene.

The whole movie revolves around a mystery element where you wonder who killed the queen in the opening scene, but the problem is that its blatantly obvious who did it even from the beginning of the film.

Now to be fair, the movie does have its upsides. The animation is good and unique, im glad that studios are starting to explore more stylized animation styles these days. Although the animation and the way the characters moved looked a little stilted in some shots, it wasnt as noticable as it was throughout the whole movie but there were some moments where i was like "huh, that looks kinda fake". The action was fast paced and exciting, the voice acting was good, and thats pretty much it. Its a passable movie but just way too ADHD for me.

Super fun, super animated movie action.

I had to travel a very long way to catch this in the cinemas as it will only be a week and it's gone, but really worth the long journey for his super fun, super fantastic animated film from Annapurna and Netflix. Animation by Blue Sky Studios who were shut down, but finished by DNEG Animation.

Ballister Boldheart voiced by the brilliant Riz Ahmed, is framed for murder, he goes on he run, and a girl, called Nimona, played with such comic energy by Chloë Grace Moretz, wants to help, total chaos rains.

Like Spiderverse, it comes out firing, with such great fun, a simple great story along with some stunning great visuals, all thanks to the production design, which a mix of classic Disney of 'Sleeping Beauty" done in a French pastel like animation style, and it is just brilliant.

Chloë Grace Moretz, really went mad fun doing, the nutty but loveable Nimona, Riz Ahmed plays it cool and quirky, Frances Conroy is very stern, Lorraine Toussaint, is royal like.

The hour and 41 minutes runtime goes quick, it's very lean and does not, like a great deal of films need any editing. I just wish this was showing in IMAX as this would look and sound epic, some great action sets and great soundtrack.. Worth the hunt at the cinema. Based on a Graphic novel which I have to check out.

Could've been better

Honestly not as good as I was hoping. Still decent, but ultimately falls a little flat for me.

My biggest gripes are with the world and characters. Almost every single person in this movie is frustrating to watch, with misunderstanding and lack of communication being an annoying, ever-present trope on display. Everyone also acts very irrational and cruel, often where it doesn't make sense or seems out of character.

On that topic, it breaks my suspension of disbelief seeing literally everyone in the setting be ignorant and unquestioning of everything. They live in a futuristic society that's progressed 1,000 years, and yet nobody knows what's on the other side of their city's walls? The story seems to focus far more on symbolism and ideas than actually making logical sense.

Other than the writing itself, the rest of the movie is pretty decent. Visually it looks great, the shading and colors are quite pleasing to witness. And it's nice to see a movie not still following the uninspired style of most Disney or Illumination movies. Music ranges from great to serviceable, which I'll definitely take.

Overall not a bad film, but I think it struggles a bit where it really counts.

Gamechanger! They Created a Whole New Genre

This is the Lovechild of Dungeons & Dragons and Cyberpunk! It's presented so well that if youre wondering why every young person is going nutts for this, because it is groundbreaking! Coupled with facemelter guitar solos and double bass the overall product is so beyond Kickass! Its only ironic that Chloe Grace Mortez gave a voice over performance that will not be matched for a very long time! With all the dissapointing animations released lately I am so happy that I pushed through and got to witness something as funny and original as this wonderful movie! Thank you everyone that made it possible. Well Done!

"Small-minded questions"

This is VERY appealing visually!

Which is good to garner attention and make you sit down and give it a chance, which is its biggest hurdle.

It is well animated and energetic characters with decent designs and defined personalities (most of them), a mix of a Techno-Knight society and wonderful action. The movie is also a bit unexpected and quite different (which is a pro and a con, but enough to be interesting) and VERY fast paced.

Still, I found that the lack of subtlety at times hurts it. The script's simplicity doesn't allow for such topics to be brushed aside, as the developments want.. Thankfully, part of the message they wanted to cover only takes a few minutes of your time and is not really intrusive or heavy handed, it's just in there in a way it might make some groan. The rest of the core lacks weight. Ore importantly, I do think the film in general is desperately in need of more depth. Be it character and their arcs, world-building, threats and tension, objectives and much more.. as if a layer of "something" cohesive was missing. Like it is afraid to linger on something specific.. or if it would have been better as a series instead? But I can't see that working from the story shown.

I'm still quite pleased with the overall quality of the projects. Hopefully, the scripts will one day match. Would recommend it, just because the animation is right up my alley!

Wonder if the comic it adapted has "more". Though, again, after seeing what this had to offer and the fact that it's appeal is mostly due to the animation.. the comic's style and medium doesn't really catch my eye to give it a chance. A one and done sort of entry.

Nimona.

When a knight in a futuristic medieval world is framed for a crime he didn't commit, the only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona -- a mischievous teen who happens to be a shapeshifting creature he's sworn to destroy.

Nimona is an example of why we love animations, we do love animations for being that fun and that dynamic, colorful and chaotic sometimes.

The story and it's build up were well presented, the characters too, it's just a lot fun than I can describe, it had some great funny moments too especially Nimona's moments...

The vocal performances were great too, Riz Ahmed and Chloë Grace Moretz were perfect as expected.

Today I watched Nimona and I apparently watched a different movie than everyone else

Like this movie is fine but in my opinion, it just isnt that special.

The voice acting, animation and fight choreography were all nice, but like...

after the first major event happens in the film and the titular character comes in.... the film is just so extremely predictable and feels like it lacks all forms of tension. One of the characters is just so insanely overpowered I can't help but wonder why they don't do more with that overpoweredness.

And yeah like every beat in this film feels like it could have been plopped from like 13 other disney or Pixar films, especially past the first 15 minutes. Btw this was originally a disney film that got scrapped.

The villain was not hard to deduce. The main backstory was incredibly obvious as to what actually happened it did not feel impactful at all. Characters act incredibly unprofessional when they're supposed to be extremlty well trained guards of the queen of this land.... there's a couple more cliches that annoyed me but to talk about them would be spoilers so, sorry

And yeah, I do like the the fact that the main character is LGBT but it doesnt add(or subtract) anything from the story. Its just a thing. Also since im on this topic, the boyfriend did some pretty bad stuff to the main character.

Overall, this is movie is fine, but I really don't see why everyone thinks this is like the best film ever. It feels like wallpaper, sometimes it looks cool in concept. However, it doesnt do enough world building for it to be anything more than just "in concept." It's medieval techno themed wallpaper.

Mid to High5/10.

MEEETALLLLL!!!

Directed by the makers of Spies In Disguise, Nimona is a film that had to face a lot of roadbumps before it saw the day of light.

To say that the fact this movie got released is a miracle, would be an understatement.

But I am glad to say that even after all those hiccups, they delivered with the end product. It's funny, heartfelt and everything you want from a movie about a shapeshifting-sadistic-sarcastic teen. Though the plot is somewhat predictable, the way it is directed and executed does leave you wanting more. The "2 and a half D" animation style that this movie features, might be my new fav artstyle.

Charming well animated film, fun for young and old

There is no doubt that Nimona is a movie aimed at a younger audience. That being said, I, as a 32 year old man, and enjoyed it thoroughly. Aside from the usual action packed high jinks you would expect from a fast paced story such as this, there are a number of twists in the story that I didn't see coming, as well as a few humorous moments that caught me off guard. Usually, movies like this fall under the banner of "fun, but predictable". That label does not apply to Nimona. The story feels refreshing. It takes things that feel familiar and gives them a new twist. Kudos to the writers.

Speaking of Nimona, the titular character of this movie, she is definitely the big draw of this movie. Watching Nimona, it's clear that a lot, if not most of the animation budget went into animating her character specifically. Add to this the voice acting of the very talented and experienced Chloë Grace Moretz and you have quite a gem on your hands. Her voice is like bubblegum. It feels like she can do just about anything with it. Her character is tragic in a way, and you really empathise with her sense of loneliness. All the other characters are well voiced and animated as well, with the character of Ballister functioning as the "straight man" (ironic term I know) to her wacky antics. This balance, though it's definitely been done before, works well.

As for the visual style and the animation. It's all computer work (no motion capture on the faces far as I could tell), and at times it does look a little "video gamey" to me. This seems to have become a standard in the industry, especially when it comes to platforms like Netflix, so I won't complain about it for too long. The animation itself is definitely very well done. It's always lively and never feels stilted. I read that Nimona faced some production issues, so I suppose we should all be glad it even got made. I must say I really enjoyed the soundtrack as well. It really hit during some of those more somber beats in the story especially.

I would recommend this movie to just about anyone.

The safest road. Not really punk rock, not really metal, and basically an average road of animated story.

I applaud the LGBTQ+ elements, wholeheartedly. But still... this is heartfelt-ish and also predictable. The brilliant indie shine of the original Nimona story was wacky and full of wry sarcastic humor, but here we have lots of drawn out feelings circling around tragic relationships, sorrows of being outcast and the issues that are stereotypical tropes of every single animated feature that has been made since the dawn of time... and to be on the level, this is unfortunate when considering what the punk-rock independence of the fabulously fun Nimona graphic novel could have been if it had been transferred to animation correctly. This show has almost none of the cheeky wink that Stevenson put into their brilliant graphic novel. This animated feature is 100% packaged predictability, and the characters follow right in line. Such a disappointment when you know what could have been... but out-of-the-box thinking is not what film seems to be about these days. Nimona is a form fitted script to appeal to a mediocre tween mentality, but where is the surprise, where is the unexpected? Yes there is enough visual appeal to keep you hoping it might do something more, but unfortunately it never comes to fruition. It's not bad, but... Why the "creative" powers behind this film didn't incorporate some of the key off-the-cuff moments of the silver medal Eisner winning graphic novel seems almost perplexing. Nimona as a movie is fine, but anyone over the age of twenty is going to know the story from beginning to end. Just telling it like it is.

Hits home hard

Long time lurker, first time reviewer.

I was touched by this film. First, by the gorgeous animation(reminds me of Arcane). Then, by the fully entertaining story. And finally, by the brilliant satire of our country and lives.

Below, is a mapping of the characters in the movie, and their counterparts in reality. (At least this is my interpretation)

Nimona - ( shapeshifter --- gender-fluid/LGBQT) Ballister - ( unorthodox hero --- those who fight for LGBQT) The Director - ( leader of the institute --- powers controlling our country) Citizens - (people of the kingdom --- people of the US)

Wrapped in this wonderful story, is a rare type of scathing criticism of our society.

Nimona reflects the struggles of those in society that don't fit the norm. Her treatment by "normal" people, is represented by her internal turmoil of wanting to be good, but drawn towards fulfilling the prejudices of the ignorant. A tragic self fufilling prophecy through no fault of their own.

Ballister represents the people who fight for equality, and for the people who find it difficult to fight for themselves.

The director, is equivalent to those who are in power. Be that the president, the media mogul families, or some secret group of powerful men/women pulling the strings. They appear benevolent, and on your side, but harbor many horrors and evils.

The citizens, well...that's us. In the movie, the citizens are lied to by the director, at a point where it is blatantly obvious who the true enemy is(the director). The lie causes the citizens to doubt the truth, and even start to mistrust each other.

The parallel to reality is the civil strife that plagues our country, Black against White, but who is the true enemy? Is it all a ruse for them to stay in power at the expense of exploiting the mistrust inherent within human minds.

If the divide within our society continues, it can only lead to our destruction. We were warned, in the most fun, entertaining, terrifying, and beautiful way.

Thank you for making this movie.

Nimona breakthrough character

Nimona is a film that strives to tell a story of misfits, of those who think and wish to live differently but aspire to be recognized by the society in which they live. Despite having a very childish cut, it has an adult reading and deals with very current issues about sexual and cultural diversity.

The setting is something that doesn't quite fit me. It plays with the anachronism of a medieval society in a modern world with advanced technology and it doesn't seem to be something that adds anything to the story. That said, it is a film that breaks certain canons and for that reason alone is very worthwhile.

Undoubtedly the character of Nimona will make a place in everyone's heart because she is incredible.

Tons of fun, with a detail for everyone

This animated movie is an adventure. The design of the world blends high-tech with mediaeval while mixing in a pop punk soundtrack that propels the on-screen action to a break-neck pace at times.

This leaves us with a fantasy show suitable for kids but with a deeper message regarding tolerance, propaganda and control that adults will find themselves reflecting on after the mayhem has stopped.

The tone can vary from Saturday morning cartoon silliness to the heartbreaking effects of isolation and loneliness, without inducing whiplash due to the carefully built characters on all sides of the story.

Highly recommended. I just hope they release the complete soundtrack soon.

Not for me

Nimona has its moments with excellent and breathtaking visuals and storytelling. I admire the diverese character gallery and some of the creative choices.

Nevertheless, the animation appeared stale (for 80% of the time) and cheap. However it is very subjective but bottom line not for me.

(Nitpick : The white "sparkel" (don't know if that's the name) in the characters eyes were too distinct for me subsequently I couldn't help being distracted by the noticeable square or triangle in the eye--designs)

The humour never landed not even once for me and seemed 2-3 years outdated (dab, rat with pizza, Bro). The story beats and "twists" has been done a million times before and better in other animation/family films.

Nimona was a fine film with moments of greatness however shadowed by mediocrity and cliches.

Emotional and Beautiful Animation Style

I loved this film so much from the emotional depth, and the warmth of the found family. To the more unique and expressive animation style. I love that it broke expectations of certain architypes, and certain characters are deeper than you expected them to be.

Some scenes were so real about just wanting to be understood for who you are, I literally cried. I'm not normally emotional over films, but this got me. As well as people aren't inherently prejudice, it's learned from society.

I thought it was a neat touch that it was fantasy, but with a modern twist too. I'm so happy this film got made, I know it nearly didn't. It's honestly amazing, and fun. All round powerful film.

Great animation, bad storytelling

It's an awesome world, with great potential, an amazing animation with fun moments.

But as the story goes, things just happens without any real justification, it's super rushed, and the magic in the universe is not completely explained.

If they had taken the time to develop the motivations of the characters, to justify their actions I think it could have been among the best animated movies.

For example, the protagonist duo lacks any justification for them to be stuck together, in Shrek donkey is the guide, in cop movies they are partners etc, in these movie the magic character just wants to be there because reasons.

The villain us just bad for the fun of it, without any real explanation etc

Great idea, so so execution.

Bundle of Bad Messages Executed Really Well

Let's get this out of the way first: the animation, extremely well done. I mean excellent. Very well done. The voice acting - also excellent. Very, very well done. This movie, from a technical standpoint, was executed with very high quality. Which I suspect has a lot to do with the high ratings. Because those qualities masked some very large flaws.

Specifically, no kids should ever watch this. I don't think adults should bother either. Let me explain.

The theme of this movie is Nimona, and NOT asking what Nimona is. The protagonist, Ballister, is taught to just accept Nimona at face-value. Bal even has several scenes where he attempts to ask Nimona what she is. Nimon gets pissed and calls him small-minded, eventually guilt-tripping Bal into not asking anything, because he thinks it would be "small-minded." I know what you are thinking. You are going say that this is a message of love, and acceptance, and what is wrong with me. But it's not. It's actually a message about being stupid, silent, and incurious.

Who, What, Where, When, Why. These are five seemingly simple questions that I would argue are the basis of intelligence. Without these questions, we do not learn anything. We do not discover the world around us, we do not build amazing things, we do not advance. Without these questions, we stagnate, and we decline. And Nimona wants you to stop asking the "What" question. Bal isn't supposed to ask What Nimona is, he must just accept her. In one scene, Nimona even says "I am not a people." - so Nimona is allowed to say what she is or isn't, but don't you dare deign to ask. Shame on you.

And this is what we want to teach children? Hey kids, you aren't allowed to ask tough questions because someone's feelings might get hurt. Kids, don't be curious. Or do - but if presented with a person who claims something (like we seem to have a lot of these days), don't ask what they are, don't ask questions. You aren't allowed. Instead, just accept everyone at face value. Because people never lie or have agendas or ulterior motives or are trying to manipulate you. Just accept. Don't question. Turn your brain off. No need to think.

Let's a take a good look at Nimona. She's some kind of creature thing, that can shapeshift into literally anything, including other people convincingly, and is as old as the kingdom that Bal lives in (and possibly older). So,at least 1000 years. To recap: a sentient creature that is near omnipotent and ancient. And Bal is not allowed to ask What she is because a human was mean to her 1000 years ago? Really?! Nimona is practically an alien god thing. Where did you come from? What are you? How old are you? What have you seen? Are there more of you? I have a million questions! Sorry, sorry, no questions at this time. Move along. Just accept.

Furthermore, Nimona hates the establishment - I mean "institution" which I think they call it, because it was founded by the little girl that was scared of Nimona. Again, to recap: medieval-equivalent humans were scared of a shape shifting something that could also look human - and this is an unacceptable response? If that were you, modern day you knowing all the modern things you know, you would be terrified too - because a shape shifting human thing is not a normal thing. That's not saying there is anything wrong with Nimona. But like it or not, Nimona is NOT a normal thing and people will react accordingly - rightfully so. But the story has to vilify the people, because we can't just have people acting with common sense and Nimona being pissed about that. So the story has young Gloreth pick up a sword for some stupid reason and point it at Nimona. I mean, up to now, Nimona hasn't hurt Gloreth at all, and Gloreth was even accepting of Nimona - they were like best buds. So instead of asking questions which is what we should do (like What are you), the story has an adult tell Gloreth that Nimona is a monster, which makes Gloreth point a wooden sword at Nimona. How does Nimona react? Does she try to talk with her friend? Does she try to make peace with her friend? Does she try to explain? Does she take to hang out with them, do good things with and for them? Nope. She tosses her friendship aside, throws a tantrum and proceeds to carry a chip on her shoulder for the next 1000 years.

Come on, really? This is just stupid now. So anyway, over those 1000 years, the "institution" is created based on the notion of Fighting Monsters. Because they are out there! Even though we see...no monsters. There are no monsters roaming the streets. There are no dead monster carcasses hanging from gates. No huge monster skulls over the entrance to the pub. No monsters. That supposedly, for over 1000 years now, this kingdom has been battling, or I guess preparing to do battle? Is that right? "Hey everyone, monsters will be here any day now, I know it's been like 1000 years since the last alleged attack, but any day. Keep your lances ready." How stupid is everyone here? And this kingdom has a huge wall around it, and I guess we are meant to think that outside is Bad, lots of Monsters - and not one single person over the course of 1000 years has climbed that wall? Not one person has looked at that wall, and said you know, I wonder what's really on the other side? Oh, look, it is pristine forest, unravaged by monsters. Give me a break. It's not even a wall that's far away! No one has to travel years to get to it. It's Right There! And yet, no one has climbed it. Not once. Hmm.

See what I mean? Sheer stupidity. This story wants to tell you that you are just supposed to accept people, even if they are different from you. And you are not allowed to ask them what they are. That's the message. And it uses Nimona as the vehicle for that message. Nimona was wronged by the founder of this society - that the founder was wrong, and thus this society is wrong (now where have I seen this message before...?). Nimona wants to tear it to the ground. So what does this omnipotent god thing do? Does she infiltrate the leadership? Take control, bring it down? Does she become one of the most wealthy and influential members and pull the strings of demise from the shadows? Does she assassinate key members of leadership? Keep in mind, omnipotent sentient god thing here, that can change into ANYTHING. Nope. None of this. Instead, she turns into an angsty teen with a buzz cut, presumably being angry at the world (now where have I seen this before?), drawing pictures of death and dismemberment, waiting for her time to strike! (For 1000 years.) And all she needs is...a villain like her!

What? So wait. You are telling me this kingdom (which features diverse people - we see it immediately in the opening characters), all getting along, living their best life...and Nimona had to wait 1000 years for a villain? Are you telling me there is no crime in this kingdom? There were no bad or evil people that Nimona could have allied with over all those years? Dude! This place is a utopia! Diverse people, everyone happy, getting along, their needs are met, there's no crime, what a terrible place! And we are supposed to want to tear this down because a single god creature thing got her feelings hurt 1000 years ago and wasn't mature enough to actually sit down with the people that hurt her feelings and have a conversation with them?!? Or at any point along those1000 years? That's the reason this utopia must fall?

Yes kids. This is how you are supposed to resolve problems. Keep it to yourself, don't ask questions, let the sadness brew and simmer until you decide that the only choice you have is to break things (which Nimona says repeatedly, to the point of convincing good guy Bal that this is the way), equivalent to a child throwing a tantrum. And failing that, kill yourself, which Nimona also tries. The world is not fair and rather than learning how to deal with that, instead just break everything you can because how dare it not be fair to you. And if you can't break enough stuff, kill yourself. Okay kids, message over, go play in the street now!

Lastly, I am beyond sick of the hate for white people. Beyond it. It's racist and beneath us. We are reverting as a society. The "white people are bad" messaging has got to stop. The only two prominent white people in this movie are both the idiot bro knight who is antagonistic to Bal and a strong proponent of the "institution" that we are meant to be wanting to tear down, and the villain. Of course. The only safe race to make a villain anymore is the white person. It's always the white person. Next time you watch a movie or show, odds are better than 90% that the bad guys are white. There's even a scene here when it shows the billboard of the young up-and-coming promising people-of-color knights...being whitewashed. Literally washed over with white paint. And the "institution" is doing this. I think you can connect the dots.

This is a stupid movie (though animated and voice-acted extremely well), with stupid messaging. It pretends to be a heartfelt and warm presentation of how we should behave (and there were a couple good scenes of this), when in fact it encourages us to hold grudges, keep silent, don't ask questions, don't talk your problems out, and when you can bottle it up no longer, the proper course of action is to do everything you can to break stuff and tear it down.

Come on people. We are better than this. I know what the movie is trying to say. But it's wrong. This isn't how we deal with our problems. We shouldn't be teaching our kids that this is how we deal with problems. And if we are resorting to "breaking things" as a way of fixing stuff, we are no better than spoiled children who get angry when we don't get their way. We are becoming a tantrum.

1 star for the content.

Your time is better spent elsewhere.

A fun animated film inspired by the graphic novel of the same name.

It's funny how I initially read about Nimona (2023) as an upcoming animated film on Netflix, which inspired me to read the graphic novel, which itself made me watch the animated film when it came out. And while the movie was good, it was missing some of what made the graphic novel great. But that's always going to be the challenge of adapting a book into a movie. Using the source material as inspiration helped make this film a tight story that works for the medium.

Sure, I would have liked to have seen an animated film in the distinctive style of the graphic novel. The emotions and climax didn't have enough time to get deep enough-like they did on the printed page. Still, I can accept that movies like The Shining (1980), Ready Player One (2018), and Nimona are distinct and different, but just as good as the books they're based on. An exact adaptation is pointless when the source material already performed this service. Nimona hit the right amount of frenetic action and visual gags that could only work in the animated format.

As a PG-rated movie, they replaced the edgy bits of the graphic novel with some childish jokes to appeal to a younger audience. Even so, Nimona (Chloë Grace Moretz) was wonderfully sadistic and her "evil" expressions made me laugh out loud. Overall, the voice acting was superb, and the animation was clean-or at least as clean as the recent trend of "stylized" animation can be. Is it as game-changing as the book? Not really, but it's a fun film to watch. And, as I said in my review of the book, the more science fantasy stories we have like this in the world, the better.

A fun animated film inspired by the graphic novel of the same name, I give Nimona 4.0 stars out of 5.

An animated gem that refused to die

Initially planned by Blue Sky Studios, then discarded after the death of the studio and resurrected by Netflix, Nimona is the new animated gem of 2023 that manages to be a fun combination between an enjoyable children's film and an animated work with a mature story behind it. This animated film presents a world that mixes medieval fantasy with futuristic science fiction. The story they present to us about someone accused of a crime that he did not commit and who must prove his innocence is somewhat cliché, but it comes with something else. What the film presents to us is a story with messages about social rejection and acceptance. Nimona is several aspects, she reflects some elements present in those who do not fit into a society and that makes her a very easy character to love. Chloë Grace Moretz brings a great personality to Nimona, making her fun and endearing. The relationship between Ballister and Ambrosius may be somewhat shocking because it is a film to enjoy with the family, but it gives both of them enough chemistry to reflect the strong connection between them. While Ballister was a villain in the comic, here they decided to give him a spin. While in the comic Ballister becomes a villain because of an incident that made him lose the opportunity to be a real knight, here Ballister becomes a villain in the eyes of society because of a mistake. It is clear that this change is to give rise to one of the film's messages about who society seeks to blame when something happens and who they decide to turn into a monster. This change even serves to empathize with Ballister following the formula used in Megamind and Maleficent about villains also being people like everyone else. The animation that mixes 2D with 3D gives a certain identity to the film, making watching it a good visual experience. Mostly, it is oriented toward comedy, but it becomes dramatic when necessary and especially in the last act. What it does not make clear is the truth about the legendary history that served to found the city, leaving open possible interpretations. In fact, the film is ambiguous regarding several things and Nimona's past. Despite the differences from the original comic, Nimona is definitely an animated work of art and one of the best productions on Netflix. My final rating for this movie is a 9/10.
