Who is the chicken ?
AvionPrince1619 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
A nice first episode that expose our main character to a new life and a new way to earn money .

We get introduced to his brother ( a little bit more stupid than the main character ). Who is in debt from a drug dealer family . And we have the main character who will own everything ( House ,money) and we got that surprised that his father was involved in the production of drugs in his own house.

I love also the fact that the episode alternate a few times between serious and comedy moments ( the brother who get completely hateful because he didnt earn anything from his father's will, the chicken dance that really reflect how the show jiggle between serious and comedy)

A nice first episode . I dont know what the others reserve to us but im quite curious how things will turn with the death of the drug dealer . And i like how they used the graphical elements to explain things : quite stylish and made the explanations more visual .

Clearly need to see more.

fireworks as expected. good.

Warning: Spoilers
One thing you can be sure with good old Guy Ritchie is: he doesnt fail to deliver what you would expect.

Solid pilot with a fascinating theme, comedic scenes with a touch of dark British humor, it's unfortunate the dialogues are a tad (a lot actually) forced/over the top.

Now: opening scene is glorious in its effectiveness and the smoothness of the camera movements. Our protagonist is a leader in the most exemplary definition of the term: flexible, responsible, understanding, caring, strict. Everything revealed in a matter of minutes without obvious exposition. Good scriptwriting guys.

The family reunion is the perfect setting to introduce our characters and their traits, especially the older brother who is a dangerously unreliable, hence comical. Fireworks coming.

Interesting how the weed operation under the mansion can be seen as either part of the protagonist goal of keeping the family estate or an obstacle to do that. Anyway... not really impressed with the lady relations with our hero, he seems too quick to accept the whole thing as "not a big deal" and the chat with the caretaker seemed more like a dream like state induced by the weed vapors than a real conversation.

Anyway: the theme. Ah some exposition perfectly cooked in a super cool environment (playing pool in a crazily luxurious mansion or whatever that is) with who most likely will be a fake ally bound to become an opponent later on. I digress: theme. It's in the title. Refinement and ferocity. How to balance the two? You wanna live in a zoo as a prisoner, or fight in the forest to survive? Obviously conflicts will abound and the audience will be served entertainment non stop

ending is a surreal predictable cliffhanger with unnecessarily repetitive scenes.

Overall a fun ride!

S1.E1 - Ok First Episode [8/10]
panagiotis199313 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
(S1. E1) My Live Reaction / Review for The Gentlemen Season 1 Episode 1 ''Refined Aggression''. Freddy is mad, its kinda funny to see his reaction. Eddie wants to sell the Manor so that his brother can pay for his debts? That sucks. Eddie's father was selling weed? I didn't see that coming. Eddie seems like a really down to earth guy, I wanna see how he will handle things now that he has everything. Eddie decided to keep the house, that's good. Giancarlo Esposito is part of the show? That's awesome. Johnston wanted to buy the house but ended up buying the wine, that's kinda funny. It seems like Freddy has a gambling addiction, this guy is a mess. Freddy shot the gangster? Damn, this is bad. Overall this episode was good and I enjoyed it. My rating is 8/10.

Masterclass in Comedy and Drama
nooapatjas13 March 2024
Absolute masterclass of an episode.

The direction and the ideas presented on the screen are fun and interesting and unlike the kind of thing you'd see on any regular show. The writing is where the story truly shines though; as seemingly every word to come from anyone's mouth is somehow perfectly fitting for each character and each moment. Top-notch dialogue with top-notch delivery.

The story never drags, instead going the opposite with twists and turns all-round while hitting you with roundabout kicks of wicked humour. Tension ramps up with every single scene, completely investing you.

As mentioned before, the humour is wicked and doesn't miss once, but that doesn't take away from the drama of genuine human emotion presented, especially in the final moments of the episode.

Bad acting makes it boring
albertinar18 April 2024
I find the idea pretty original but I am appalled by the awful performances of Theo James and the woman that plays Sussie Glass whatever her name is. They all look completely fake, forced dialogues, there is a general lack of sense in the story. It took me a whole day to finish the first episode as it was so boring and obvious. I expected more from Ritchie in fact. I love his movies but this story lacks solidity and the actors are poorly chosen, they are not funny nor dramatic or violent enough which seems to be the main theme of the series. Violence is so fake, the attitudes of the characters also fake. Truly disappointing.

Stale
roxlerookie23 April 2024
Stale from the first episode. Having seen the movie, the underlying plot obviously was no surprise. I'm a huge Ritchie fan, but this first episode made me question whether to watch the rest or not. He said in interviews he wanted to give a TV show a shot because it'd be a first. In his most recent movies there was a stellar cast. In his earlier work there was a novelty and a sharpness that made Ritchie so iconic.

Here there is none of that. The main guy looks like an underwear model, the lady arranges executions for breakfast but lack the shoulders to make it credible. The story is linear and stale from the outset.
