Nice slow thriller
Rodrigo_Amaro24 April 2023
"Chokehold" is an interesting slow-burner with some fine thrilling elements that has everything to please its audience, yet it doesn't bring anything new to the genre neither manages to bring anything that can make viewers discussing much about it afterwards. Thanks to the critical character played by Kivanç Tatlitug is that keep ourselves slightly glued to the screen just wanting to know how he's gonna solve all the problems he causes or are thrown upon him. The guy is like a magnet to attract problems, and he always needs to be quick on his wits to find ways and means to solve everything.

Tatlitug plays a Yalin, a businessman involved in some shady scheme in Istanbul that he needs to retreat himself and his wife (Funda Eryigit) to a distant location area in the Aegean area to avoid conflicts as the charges against him are pending in court. Peace and quiet cannot be found since all the locals know exactly who he is - some because he lived there during his childhood and his father is a wealthy man; others know him because of the finantial scandal they think he caused upon them, and because all of that he needs to find ways to fight for his life, becoming a hunted man, but he also needs to assure his wife that everything's under control and they can live quietly.

Story keeps a very slow manner, everything keeps unfolding in a quiet manner and the more we discover about Yalin, our hero initially, the more we find out he's not all that good a person. Surely, the violence can be excused in a way since he's just defending himself from the vicious attacks he suffers, but one may wonder if he's all that innocent from the crimes they said he committed with his company, why he never manages to say anything for himself, or try some argument?

Through the whole ordeal, he just run away and hide until the breaking point comes and murder becomes the sollution.

I went in without much expectations yet I was satisfied with most of what I've seen. The way Yalin's scandal is treated is interesting for the time being, since it's a frequent thing that's always on the news, and to mix that with a revenge from those he harmed makes up an interesting concept. The few obstacles that prevent "Chokehold" in becoming better than it is comes from some less realistic elements, implausible moments or some lack of following things through (lousy police work and there's no way it could be said they fail on purpose. Script error indeed). And there are so many elements that could be added into the mix, to make Yalin's crusade something even more dangerous could be included yet the script fails for not spicing things up, for the benefit of a story that has many good things to show, yet it makes things all a little too simple.

It's a fine thriller that can also works as a dramatic character study about a pathological liar who lies so well and so good that everybody belives in him.

But knowing he can't escape himself and neither others for too long, that challenge is more difficult to solve than all the web of lies, hurt and deception he left all the way behind him. Is there actually a way out? 6/10.

Suspense-Slowburn-Plottwist
evolynogard24 April 2023
First of all the movie is very slow and most of the scenes consist of Yalin (Kivanc) being paranoid. He basically forked a lot of people over by stealing their money and he actually got away with it. So naturally Turkish people, being extra spitefull and triggered, have to have their revenge.

The funny thing is that even the police tells Yalin that the whole village will be hunting him down and that they will not help him. And that is basically the summary of the movie: angry village people trying to kill Yalin amd how he deals with it.

The suspence scenes are good. Eventhough there are a lot of unecesseray scenes Kivanc and Funda's acting remains well-round. The ending has a plottwist that tries to invite the viewers to a discussion about the power of money in Turkey.

It was too Guy deMaupassant
eandmshafer26 April 2023
Definitely a noirish film, not one I could appreciate. I am curious about the writer and what other movies he has written. The main charactor was not the aggresser in his bad deeds, he was just defending himself; except in the end. That was a shock! Interesting how the writer wanted us to know that money talks and can forgive bad deeds. Watching films of locations where I have traveled is always rewarding. The actor is talented and very good looking although they protrayed him as bedraggled and certainly not walking a runway. As I am writing this, I have gone from a 2 star rating to a 7. Just because it was not my cup of tea, I should be fair and reasonable.

It could have been better.

Warning: Spoilers
The movie "Chokehold" is a thriller and action-packed production full of violent scenes and impressive fight scenes. While the lead actor portrays a character specialized in martial arts, he manages to impress the audience with his acting performance.

However, the movie is a bit weak in terms of story and character development. The script can be criticized for being a bit shallow and predictable. The relationships between the characters were not deepened enough and the motivations of some characters remained unclear. This can make it difficult to connect the audience to the story.

Additionally, it can be said that the movie moves away from realism a little. Although the action scenes were quite surprising and successful, some of the physical struggles were forced to be believable. This can make the film feel a bit artificial and fake.

However, "Chokehold" offers a fast-paced and energetic movie experience. Well-constructed action scenes and fluid cinematography keep the audience glued to the screen. If you are going to watch it just to watch the fight scenes, the movie will give you the taste you expect.

In conclusion, the movie "Chokehold" can be an enjoyable option for action lovers. However, if you are expecting a deep story and character development, this movie may be a bit disappointing for you.

Boga Boga (2023) An interesting turkish film
claszdsburrogato13 May 2023
Netflix presents us with many international movies, some good and some bad. In the case of Boga Boga, it's a very divisive film. Some people will love the movie because it's so different, but others will hate it for that very reason. However, I neither hated nor loved it, I found it to be an average film that has some highs and lows. He's pretty slow and that's something that will put some people off. At certain times the fact that it is slow helps a lot in the immersion and development of the film, on the other hand, at other times it becomes tiring. When a more frantic scene occurs, the director manages to do it in a well-executed way. The story is very interesting and thought-provoking, but the plot twist is pretty dull and its revelation leaves something to be desired. It's a movie I loved watching and most likely I'll watch it again in a while.

Unfortunately the plot is deficient
olcare22 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I really had expectations for the movie, both the cast, the director and the writer, they all promised a lot, but the movie is definitely lacking.

Although the message of money poisons is very clear, I think it has not been conveyed correctly. I did not understand why the history of the character was not told to us, except for the small details, I could never connect with the character. All the characters were the same air, which takes the movie far back.

The plot was really a hole, the events seemed ineffective (for example, there is a disappearance case, the gendarmerie does not fall on it, but the gendarme is the enemy of the man). At the end, the splitting scene between husband and wife was also insufficient. The effect of the plot twist of the movie was very little.

In terms of atmosphere, the movie managed to be reactionary, and the fight scenes were realistic, but I can't say the same for the whole thing. I didn't have a problem with the acting. I also liked the use of music, the most realistic sex scene I've seen in a long time was good too. Although these details made me like the movie a little, it was very insufficient.

In short, the film that couldn't maintain its reality was a disappointment for me. Onur Saylak and Hakan Gunday are two very important names for our film industry, and the works they produce are generally aimed at advancing the industry. However, in this film, they were overly focused on the message and missed the overall direction of the film. This could be the worst production for both of them. The state of Turkey's film industry saddens and disappoints me.

Different!
efekan_kahya2 May 2023
I keep questioning myself is it worth to watch this movie? Well... Why not?

This is a movie that can be classified in the thriller movies genre. In some scenes, it really gives you goosebumps and makes the tension feel at a high level, especilally in the second part of the movie. The actors make the audience feel this tension at a very high level, especially Kivanc Tatlitug in leading role as Yalin Bey.

We're experiencing another great and also extraordinary scenery from Hakan Gunday mind. But that's the all surprise that the movie could give to audince. I don't wanna spoil too much about the scenery of the movie but there are two "shoking" scene in this movie. One of is right after the beginning of the movie and other one is in the finale. Yeah, and that's all. There is nothing else that can make you take your eyes off the screen. The nature is good. Camera shoots are allright. That's the all. Nothing more and nothing less that you can find in this movie.

It's an unusual movie among the other Turkish movies. The acting and the script are quite out of the ordinary.

I hope we can see more movies coming from the minds of Gunday and Saylak 'cause we really need to see but I believe it should be better than this.

Not as expected!
alooolwazwaz16 January 2024
Unfortunately it was not as i expected. There are two things i need to mention; Firstly, the blot and main moral of the movie is very poor and meaningless, for me i think it could be better.

Second, there are extra some sexual and alcohol that are non-neccessary. I do not know why they are still adding these scenes when they are not adding any value to the movie and is not related to the main story. My rating would be higher if the movie was free of these scenes.

Not forgetting that there are some adds and powers of the movie.

First, i choose this movie because of Kivanc, and as usual he did a great job.

Second, the filming and directing are sooooo amazing, it is way better than usual turkish series', and i am sure it is because of Netflix.

Third and finally, the filming site is such a beautiful place. Thanks for the one who choose it.

Summary of the hypocrisy of our society...
ffidan29 April 2023
It is one of those movies that will be loved or not loved at all. Although the beginning and the course do not seem to give the expected, it is a movie full of social message content that gets better from the middle to the end. Onur Saylak, who has beautifully scripted the hypocrisy of our society was great again. Could have been a 10/10 movie if he could get out of the series format a little more. Colors, camera angles and images are very very successful. He summed up in an instructive way that money is above ethical values. Kivanc Tatlitug and Funda Eryigit remind us many times that they are among the best actors in this country. Watchable 👍🏾

Very good movie!
yalapserhat26 April 2023
When you check the ratings in here, it's obvious that many people did not understand message. Its a great movie to show how our recent society is prisoning themselves. The dog at the end of the movie is the guardian of the hell gates. Good scenario amazing acting as usual by Kivanc Tatlitug. The movie are for those who loves slow but good ending movie that's leaves a lot of thoughts about life and society. I recommend to everyone to watch this without considering the rating of audience! Turkish cinema is as usual great. Amazing pictures and amazing acting and amazing message. Thanks for everyone for such a great movie!

I really like it
beyhangl23 April 2023
Kivanc was absolutely amazing, amazing, amazing in this movie! As we all know, he is a very talented actor in Türkiye, and this film was just another proof of his remarkable skills. Kivanc has an undeniable charm and charisma that captivates audiences, pulling them into the world of the characters he portrays. His ability to deliver powerful, emotional performances has earned him a special place in the hearts of fans all over the world.

In this movie, Kivanc showcased his versatility as an actor, as he seamlessly transitioned between a wide range of emotions, from intense drama to light-hearted humor. His on-screen presence was magnetic, drawing viewers in and holding their attention throughout the entire film. With each role he takes on, Kivanc continues to expand his range and demonstrate his commitment to his craft.

The chemistry between Kivanc and his co-stars was palpable, creating a dynamic and engaging ensemble that kept the audience entertained and invested in the story. The film's director and crew did a fantastic job of bringing the story to life, with beautifully crafted scenes and a perfect balance of tension and emotion.

No escape
kosmasp5 July 2023
No escape when it comes to my puns you say? It may be something different, but you'll have to watch the movie to know, so no pun intended. The title, the original one sounds a bit strange to say the least. Kind of dubious in a way. Kind of something you have to figure out - like the main character. Do you feel for him, having lost so much - or are you more sympathetic with the "others"? As the movie progresses you will know - actually some may be able to figure it a lot sooner than others.

If you like dramas with great performances, that deliver on ambiguity as well ... well you could choose worse than this movie right here. The movie may leave you with a lot of feelings, not all with a positive vibe ... you'll have to be aware of that and everything will be good ... well maybe not everything...
