One of, if not the best Chinese costume dramas in recent years
jinnisme24 January 2022
The visual aspect of the drama really stands out, they paid a lot of attention in designing the filming sets, just Baili Hongyi's room alone is enough proof. The costumes and tools were made with considerable attention to details, and in accordance to the time period as well.

As for the plot, Baili Hongyi's storyline stands out the most for me. He has great character development (thanks a lot to Wang Yibo, he made a lot of alterations to perfect and help this character stay true to himself), starting from a foodie with not much knowledge of the world surrounding him to someone who loses the people close to him and has no one to rely on as he sets on his mission to find out the truth. His loveline is a joy to watch, with all the lovey dovey scenes, but he doesn't get himself lost in that. Rather, he is the only character in the main trio to have been focusing on discovering the truth all along, he's the one who pushes the storyline forward.

Although the drama still has some defects, it is definitely worthy of your time.

I really love this TV series 😍 All the characters have their own sparkling light! And the storyline is very exciting too. But the end is a bit too rushed.. Wang Yibo has acted superbly!!

Where Does the Ultimate Good Exist?
ENIGMA0517 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I had been looking forward to seeing this one as it promised to be something intriguing. While by far not my favorite costume drama of the year, it kept me coming back for each episode. It had its pluses and minuses; I do however want to say that nothing I write below is to reflect poorly on any actor. Actors work with what they are given both good and bad.

Pros: My two favorite characters of the entire series were Gao Bingzhu and 16th Night. Both actors did a superb job in their characters. Huang Xuan was brilliant in his portrayal of this rogue badass who was hellbent on avenging the deaths of his friends and taking care of all of the people in the Unwelcome Well. His evolution into a more refined badass, didn't take away from his almost psychic notion of who the bad guys were even when they counted in the double digits and could be your closest friends if not family. When meeting Wu Siye and Baili Erlang, these two characters only expanded his already unbelievable ability to digest information that seemed like something in passing to someone else. He also seemed to be extremely lucky in survival no matter how many times he was practically pin-cushioned by 16th Night and others. GBZ was in the thick of it from the moment we met him in the first episode to his absolute last second on screen in the very last episode. This man is absolutely a class act and I would look forward to seeing him in other dramas particularly gritty ones.

Then comes probably the greatest antagonist I've seen in a very long time; 16th Night was absolutely a soulless, brutal killer, who took out adults or kids alike with her creepy three-sided weapon of design, using alleyways and rooftops to showcase almost immortal martial art skills. What made her character particularly amazing was that it wasn't until the episode of her reveal that we even knew she was a woman! Furthermore, she was totally hiding in plain sight and a friend of GBZ, who saved his life on numerous occasions while putting both herself and her "regular" business at risk. Her complete and total double life immersion was very impressive. Sadly, when she killed herself once she was exposed to GBZ, no other antagonist in the show, even the higher ups of the Four Seasons cult were able to replace her brilliance and brutality. Zhang Li who played her was a pleasure to watch.

The two other leads held their own. Victoria Song as Wu Siye had really great martial arts skills and her unfailing loyalty to those who she cared about most was what made her a solid character and leading lady to GBZ. I watched this for Wang Yibo originally as he's the only one I knew in the cast and though Baili Hongyi/Erlang was in a way the brain of the 3 musketeers because he could decode things and figure out maps and plans, his character took a while to thaw out and was reminiscent of his break out role of Lan Zhan in CQL because of his tiny facial expressions even though he had a lot more lines here. However, I appreciated his smarts and solving puzzles and when working together with GBZ and WSY, he was an integral part of the team. Though he couldn't fight and would constantly need rescuing (as the other two would often say to each other "Baili Hongyi is in danger"), he figured ways out eventually to save himself for the short term if nothing else. His and GBZ's hinting towards each other to solve a problem or get someone out of danger was a nice added touch. Showed that they had developed a very good relationship of trust with each other.

Other characters that were notable in good ways were Master Chu, Shen Fei who sadly perished saving BH's life and the sacrificial lamb or scapegoat Li Beiqi. The last was murdered sadly and only at the very end did people find out that he was innocent of all of the crimes against him. And the first always had the best interests of the Empress and people at heart so was reinstated; I actually hope that GBZ returns working for him again.

The last pros were the OSTs, some of the costumes, badass fighting scenes, and the set designs, plus CGI which were simply gorgeous. It was quite obvious where the large budget went.

Cons: In the very first episode, you felt like you already landed into the middle of the series and had to run to catch up. Now some people might like that but to me that's a rather messy start to a series. Furthermore, the amount of characters that were introduced was done at the speed of light and many died before you even had time to blink. You didn't know who was good or bad or why certain ones were killed until maybe the 6th episode in. It was all too hasty and had little cohesion.

The amount of bad guys was ridiculous, most didn't matter and who they actually were more often then not wasn't even properly explained but because there were so many bad guys, you eventually lost track of who the dead ones were. There simply shouldn't be that many completely useless characters running around.

Probably one of the most upsetting things for me was the killer who "replaced" 16th Night was probably the polar opposite of anything I would expect a savage killer to look/act like. Robot Barbie that didn't blink was beyond a cop out. They would have been better off not having another one, because even without the original 16th Night, this chick didn't scare anyone. Nothing about her said scary or killer; Robocop walked with more fluidity.

And how can anyone forget.....EERRRRRRLLLLAAAANNNNNGGG! Dear lord, hold the wheel! 30 out of 39 episodes of this ear bleeding, shriek that happened 76 times per episode. Liu Ran was the clingiest, most cringeworthy, annoying, and dumb as a brick character I've seen in a long time. She was like a pet chihuahua that wouldn't leave her husband alone and wouldn't stop nagging. I was actually amazed they evolved her in 9 episodes into a mature and emotionally stable woman who stood by her husband and trusted him as opposed to running after him and calling his name as she messed up his plans nearly getting them both killed a few times; because those first 30, I wasn't alone in wanting to send her character along with her brother, and maid out of town on the bro's camel!

Romance was the one genre that was not needed at all in this drama. When these kinds of scenes came, it was like throwing a well-oiled machine off kilter. It was unnecessary and extra. The mopey, clingy scenes just poured cold water on a hot detective drama where they just didn't belong. Not every drama needs to have romance because it just doesn't fit; it's like trying to jam a square peg through a circle.

The entire Liu family were either major jinxes or just plain evil. Her brother was another totally unnecessary character and his puppy love for someone who turned out to be also part of the cult, led him down the path of delusion and the even more inconsistent ending to the one character who shouldn't have died as it made zilch sense and made the ending of this series very confusing. Like how did he know where Lord Rodent w/rug would be exactly (a character that was so obviously the big bad since he first appeared on screen, that that revelation in the last episode was beyond underwhelming)? The 3 musketeers work together that one last time was impressive but they lost one. How does one get away with killing a leading inner guard of the Empress and not even get sentenced to prison but to go up a mountain and repent as a monk? That makes as much sense as only 10 days after her death, there was no real feeling of mourning amongst those people who cared about her the most. Again very inconsistent; because GBZ spent 5 years tracking down the murderer of his friends but he won't go up the mountain and take out the moron who killed the only woman he ever loved who actually loved him back w/out strings attached?

And lastly, what was the "greater good" that the cult was constantly yakking about? The massacre of an entire capital? Sounds very Jonestown to me, but it was never explained to the audience.

Would I recommend this drama? Yes, I would. It's a good detective costume drama, but it comes with many errors. So just be aware of that and decide for yourselves.

Drama Of The Year - Saved 2021 from Mediocre dramas
angelinadebbarma-4182124 January 2022
I've been a fan of this genre since a very small age. And tbh I'm quite picky when it comes to the choosing my favourites. I saw the trailer of this drama last year and wow, it was a banger and as soon as I could, I added Luoyang to my watchlist. Here are some points which I found honestly amazing in the series- 1) Spectacular Production: Luoyang has amazing cinematography, high- budgeted production and magnificent editing that makes you crave for Vintage content everyday. One of the most important reasons why it was one of the best mystery and suspense drama of all times.

2) Plot and Cast- This drama was released before the novel and this very thing just added to the goodness and suspense of it. Moreover, the side characters played a very good role too. For eg- Shen Fei, Bai Lang, etc The leads Gao Bingzhu, Baili Hongyi and Wu Suiye has become my dream team now. They are a perfect trio - one who isn't scared of taking risk is GBZ, one who is always upto justice and superiorly intelligent is Baili Hongyi and these two need Wu Suiye who is sensible and strong. I really loved the idea of team of three people who has nothing to do with each other and have come from different walks of life coming together to save their hometown from corruption. I really love their acting, good portrayal of characters, amazing character development of Baili Hongyi's personality ( I used to hate him at first but he became my favourite at last).

3) Portrayal of Women - I still get goosebumps with the way Luoyang portrayed Women Empowerment. A strong imperial guard Wu Suiye taking charge of the administration as a head among all the males, and the way these women were powerful without anyone's support, specially the Empress and the Club women is just chef's kiss. Besides, Liu Ran was the sweetness of this drama. Altogether, these women gave the idea of "Women can be loving and caring as well as your nightmare if you trespass them"

4) Relationship development- This drama has everything which will make it an audience favourite! I became so invested in the way the characters were warming up to each other. Whether it is GBZ and Baili's enmity changing into brotherhood or the sweet sour dynamics of our husband and wife- Baili and Liu Ran, or the dream team of GBZ and WSY and the brother sister instincts from Wsy and Baili. This drama was so good.

5) Special extras- I really like the idea of arranged marriages in series where two people fall in love gradually and close the distance of a respectable relationship gradually. So I will always be a fan of Bailiu couple.

Thanks for this long read if you could make it till here. Overall, Luoyang is a binge worthy series. Have a try even if this genre is not your taste, I'm sure it will not disappoint you ever. The drama team did a great job.

The drama is a good watch, and that the plotline can keep the audience captivated. I watched it while it was showing, and the days that they did not air a new episode feels like years. Yibo's performance hooked me in from the get go. His subtle display of emotion mad eme fall in love with Baili Hongyi and totally forgot about Yibo. I wish they have a second season.

Very intriguing and smart storyline
Coraline_IDN24 January 2022
I honestly was feeling bored with typical C-dramas which lately always having the similar plot or story, especially in romance or costume drama and I almost gave up.

Luckily I found Louyang! The story line and plots are very different with other drama. It explore more on the investigation and mystery.

The cinematography and visual on this drama were truly a blessings for my eyes - so beautiful.

I also loves the costumes. They really can potrays the elements in Tang Dynasty accurately.

Of course my favorite character here is Baili Hongyi. He is so smart and witty!

One of the memorable scene was when Gao Bing Zhu asked how did Er Lang know to open the snake key and then he simply replied, "I'M BAILI HONGYI" Awesome!!

Fast Pace at its best
wnnyh24 January 2022
Some people find a series drama pace are too slow especially for the series with more than 30 episodes.

Luoyang is different, you ended up watching this with your heart beats fast and out of sudden one episode ends.

The picturesque of Shendu city (Luoyang city back then) are so beautiful its jaw dropping, and it educate you on the custom during Tang Dynasty, during marriage, the kingdom. I also like the fact that they showed a lot of efforts of how a family member protect each other through their own capability and way.

Its really a good must watch drama and deserved a re-watch just to make sure we did not miss important clues the drama gave here and there.

Baili Hongyi always catch my attention
vielouis27 January 2022
All about this drama is interesting. The whole set, with all the details are very nice a beautiful. The story is kind of different that other similar drama. I love the chemistry between the main cast and also the progressive of the relationship between Er Lang and his wife. The most impressive acting off course Baili Hongyi. They way he stay with his character and portray it with such emotion is worth to watch. I wish he has more screen time coz the role of Baili Hongyi is very vital, the one that leads to the answer.

Great job Wang Yibo!!

Gorgeous and exciting
movieluvr9925 January 2022
You can tell a lot of money went into the filming of this. It's absolutely gorgeous. So many Chinese productions are awfully cheap-looking. This is the exception. Movie-quality for China. Acting is strong across the board and best of all, it's compelling. I was hooked on the mystery and enjoyed the detective work to uncover it. Very nice.

Mysterious and logical storyline, political views, magnificent cinematography
auniazman-7829624 January 2022
I'm one who stresses more on storyline when I'm watching dramas or movies. The storyline of Luoyang is very interesting, the mystery will get you invested more into every each of the characters. Other than that, the political and investigation elements are just what I'm looking for in historical dramas. I don't have any more words for the cinematography, camera work and the clothing, which I believe was back in the Wu Zhou period. If you love thriller, mystery and historical genre, this drama is promising 👍

I watch alot of Cdrama, I can say this drama is a complete art. Starting from the storyline, its not too slow and not too fast and there is no dragging moment. In every scene there will be some clue left for the audience to think. The cast also great and deliver their roles respectively. Every character have their own characteristics also the setting place was so beautiful. We can see how beautiful the place, the structure of the building in the historical eras.

Mystery of Shen Du
wyeobo24 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is the first C drama that my family got hooked to watch, usually only my mom and me watch C dramas.

The drama opens all out. It is apparent from details, costume, props even on the extras that this drama has a hefty budget. It also does not hurt to remember that this drama is made in conjunction with Luoyang City Tourism to boast the city's ancient beautiful landscape. Adding good action scenes and mystery intriguing enough to keep us on our seats, my family was declared hooked by the third episode.

To be fair there are scenes we did not care for, my mother said there were too little love stories while the rest of the family (3 males + me) felt the existing love stories were too forced and the time spent on them could have been allocated to the mysteries and case solving more. Still, it was a treat, camera angles, lighting and easy-on-the-eyes actors, and me being a fan of Wang Yibo can only feel proud because I get to see improvements in his acting through this latest drama of his, made it in all an entertaining 39 episodes drama.
