Too Slow
lisaferguson-7185030 January 2022
The movie is very slow paced and it was boring. This is a made for TV movie and should not have been a theater movie. I am glad we went during the day and did not pay full price.

What happened
d-ramseeey13 February 2022
We thought a movie with Dennis Quaid and Queen Latifah would be a sure bet, but their talents were wasted. The movie lacked direction and dragged for the most part. The three children in attendance were in and of the theater during the movie. Obviously, the movie failed to hold their attention (as well as ours). What started out as having potential turned turned into the hope that it would end soon so we could go home.

Bizarre Mixed Message
westsideschl16 June 2022
Posted sign on semi-remote Kentucky property said, "Trespassers Will Be Shot". Is that legal or ethical? Script was odd, perhaps because of mixed symbolism of children being bullied combined with a child's coping with loss of mother with both somehow connected to a caged tiger that is oddly located in a remote no where location. Ending bizarre.

Terrible screen writing
Sebi_K77721 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not entirely sure how this movie got to theaters. The screen writing on this was absolutely terrible. I took a class in college on screenwriting and I swear some of this kids in that class wrote a better script than this. The entire movie had no driving action or a clear conflict. Yeah the tiger in the cage is the conflict but it's not gripping whatsoever. The conflict should have been something like the motel owner was planning on killing it and Rob and Sistine wanted to save it. Or the Tiger was visibly sick. Anything would have been better than "feeling bad for it". Also, Sistine's character is very annoying, much rather have had her be another poverty type girl who takes a liking to Rob. Queen Latifah's character fell short as I thought she would have a greater impact. I have absolutely no idea why they let a TIGER out in the woods of FLORIDA. Not only is that a terrible mistake, tigers don't live in Florida woods. And the fact that Queen Latifah didn't intervene and help that get professional help blows my mind. The children actors fall short as well but I blame that entirely on the screen writing. The conflict between the dad and the motel owner literally was not solved at all in the end. They literally just walk away from each other after killing the tiger. The dialogue was way too on the nose. Especially Rob's mother's death. We know she died, you didn't need the doctor to cheesily say "she's passed" like yeah no kidding. Show don't tell goes a long way in screenwriting. Overall, nothing was resolved, the tiger ended up getting shot anyways literally 20 seconds after it was freed. And somehow the drawing Rob made of the tiger magically floated in front of them as they were walking away. I don't care if this was based on a best selling novel, whoever did the screen writing for this ought to be fired. Don't waste your money.

Uncomfortable and irritating to watch like the undiagnosed allergy/rash
traceytak6 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A tiger spends all its time in a small cage inhumanely, anyone can call animal welfare at any time but no one does. Two kids know about it and don't do the right thing. One child has itchy legs, another reviewer has decided this is psoriasis, yet it could be an allergy, or numerous skin conditions. The young female is irritating to watch, very unlikeable . Any male characters in the film are angry or passively aggressive. It's just a film which is annoying and senseless. If anyone watches this and thinks setting a tiger free, standing by and watching it is a good idea after it hasn't eaten for two days then they should stick to Pixar animations. A stupid concept all in all.

It went nowhere
hotmasamosir2 March 2022
Usually when Quaid or Latifah is onboard, it's a feel-good movie and worth watching. Somehow they missed the target and instead gave us a sleep-inducing snoozefest that meandered and never progressed into something meaningful.

I kept getting distracted watching this and total time spent was probably 3 hours to complete Such a miss...

Not good
atdipaolo13 June 2022
Quite possibly one of the wort movies I've ever seen. Don't waste your time. Queen Latifah, Dennis Quaid disappointing. Plot was ok at the outset but just sort of crumbled at the end.

Lost potential
agsconsulting28746 April 2022
Sorry, but this one misses the mark. I had great expectations going in, since there were some good actors involved. They did their best with a poor script, and some unbelievable scenes they had to try and make believable. The plot was thin and the plot holes were many. The story line was weak and poorly developed. I never read the novel this was based upon, but suspect it was cut down substantially, and lost a lot in the process. Consequently, there were a number of story transitions that were not at all smooth. I'm sorry if this analysis disappoints some, but I'm merely expressing my own disappointment.

abdelhoosen23 January 2022
Even the 6 year old kid wanted to leave. No plot. Poor storyline. Peppa pig is more interesting. It leaves you wondering what's the point of the movie.

Releasing caged emotions
Cover-Lover28 January 2022
THE TIGER RISING is an entertaining, magical, heart-breaking film. Middle schooler Rob Horton is an introverted boy who tamps down the pain of his mother's recent death. Alongside this grief, he falls victim to school bullying due to a skin disease and that he lives in a motel.

I connected with Rob very quickly and empathized with his loss. His loneliness is palpable, even though he disguises it with his quiet and polite nature. Initially, he deals with his grief as best he can, by employing his vivid imagination while he whittles wood figures-a craft his mother taught him. But it's when he discovers a caged tiger in the woods owned by the dark and offensive motel owner, that he truly begins to unearth his buried feelings.

Soon Rob meets Sistine Bailey, a new girl in town, who is immersed in her own bout of anguish. Though they have opposing ways of dealing with their pain (Rob is timid and sad, Sistine is sassy and aggressive) they bond over their love of art and their secret of the caged animal.

This isn't a swift-moving film, but I feel the measured pacing helps display Rob's loneliness. I was distracted by Rob's magical imagination, but I think this aspect of the film might appeal to younger viewers. The film holds a particularly surprising and intense scene (no spoilers here) that might be difficult for sensitive younger viewers.

The theme of this movie is releasing caged emotions, and the brightest lights are Christian Convery (Rob) and Queen Latifah (Willie May). Their characterizations, impassioned expressions, and believability outshine the rest.

Terribly slow

Warning: Spoilers
Filled with constant irrelevant flashbacks. Slows the entire movie down. Main kid is a good actor but other than that cast is terrible. Dennis Quaid with an awful joe exotic wannabe.

The Tiger Rising
amybooksy6 February 2022
I enjoyed watching the movie The Tiger Rising. As a fan of actor Dennis Quaid and actress Queen Latifah, I was excited to see this movie. I thought it was great movie to see with my children. They were instantly able to understand Rob's heartache and what he was experiencing. He is dealing with the grief of losing his mother and meets a little girl, Sistine, who is, also, dealing with her own emotions involving her parents' divorce. It is sad movie that I had to find my tissues throughout, but the story offers hope and coping with traumatic experiences. I do have to warn that the ending could be upsetting for younger audiences.

I am giving The Tiger Rising four stars. I recommend it for families of all ages. It would be a great way for them to bring up much needed conversations.

I received an early screener link of The Tiger Rising, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

Kids Movie with a lesson for Adults too....
rsridhar200510 February 2022
Decent movie about sorrow, anger among other feelings we harbor in our minds. Set them free. That's what the movie is all about. Kudos to the kids and Queen Latifah for their believable performance. Enjoyed it.

Sorry I bought this to show my students
charltonmwc16 March 2022
I've read this book many times over the years and my students were very excited to see it come to life. After watching it (or trying to-had to skip most of it) I'm hoping they forget about it! The acting, etc was way off; it may have quoted the book verbatim but it's delivery was flat, and so boring!!

The Tiger Rising Falls Flat On Flat On its Face! It's Horrible
stan_gee12 February 2022
This movie is horribly, horribly wrong, I gave it two stars, one for the Tiger and One for the little boy. The little girl is in seriously need of a reality check, her attitude in this movie stinks to high heaven, no way I'd let a child of mine speak to me the way she spoke to her Mother. The movie is slow, all the flashbacks are mind numbing. Whoever wrote the script for this movie, please somebody take away their pens, paper and computers. I can't see any child sitting still along enough to watch a movie this boring and unassuming.

I had better hopes
therollerbrat24 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Talk about needing to act in a movie because COVID made money tight. When I saw Dennis Quaid and Queen Latifa was in it, I thought it'd be pretty descent. I guess they had some mortgages to pay. It wasn't absolutely terrible. But the acting was subpar, even for Quaid. Latifa, was probably the best, even with the lines she had. The kids, well.. they're kids so can't expect too much. The story line is obviously a "lesson learned" story line. But this whole time, you're wondering why the tiger is still in the cage. The title has tiger in it, but the whole purpose was "setting the tiger free" as a metaphor to set your feeling, your troubles free and stop holding on to anger and sadness. Yet, the tiger slow mow runs through the woods and then just dies. So what's the metaphor? Set your fears free just so they can die? I don't get it. Don't waste your money unless you can watch it for free.

Stupid story

A 4 years old could write a better story and a more realistic scenario.

If the writer was 2 years old, then congratulations :)))

Lost precious time watching this movie.

If you can't get a decent performance out of Dennis Quaid, just quit. Horrible script and direction. I don't know how things like this get made. Just dismal.

Warning: Spoilers
Ok, let me just start off and say my English class and I watched this movie to compare this to the book, by Kate DiCamillo, and let me just say, it has poor acting, for example when a character the movie added on... Ms. Mills the art teacher? So she falls down boo hoo and she practically THROWS her papers and falls on purpose. What? Number two, sorry if this is a spoiler, but when the tiger dies, he... evaporates? Leaving the drawn tiger picture on the ground in place of the tiger, but the tiger was NOT A FIGMENT OF IMAGINATION! Ughhhhhhhh! The only good thing about this movie is the set. THIS. MOVIE. IS. SO. HORRIBLE!!!!

How People Handle Loss
stevendbeard28 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I saw The Tiger Rising, starring Christian Convery-Playing With Fire, Venom; Madalen Mills-Summering, Jingle Jangle:A Christmas Journey; Katharine McPhee-Scorpion_tv, The House Bunny; Sam Trammell-Homeland_tv, True Blood_tv; Dennis Quaid-American Underdog, The Intruder and Queen Latifah-The Equalizer_tv, Girls Trip.

This movie is based on a kids novel with the same name, The Tiger Rising and is about how people handle loss. Katharine and Sam are ten year old Christian's parents and when Katharine dies, both handle it differently. Sam doesn't even want to talk about Katharine-he tells Christian that he can't mention her name-and Christian suppresses his feelings so much that he breaks out in hives. Sam takes Christian and moves to get away from people that are trying to console them and gets a handyman job at a motel. Dennis owns the motel-and a big chunk of the town, as well-but is a sadistic boss. Madalen is a girl in Christian's school that befriends him-they are both picked on by the other kids-and Queen is a maid at the motel, who also becomes friends to the two kids. One day, Christian is exploring in the near by woods and finds a tiger in a cage. Who's tiger is it? What is it doing there? Should they let it free? These are burning questions that have consequences.

It's rated PG for language and violence and has a running time of 1 hour & 42 minutes.

It's not one that I would buy on DVD but it is good enough for a rental.

What a dreadful movie. Spoiler alert - a beautiful tiger dies so a dad stops being a terrible father, a boy's psoriasis clears up and a young girl stops with an attitude.

Worst movie I've seen in a while.

BEAUTIFUL!
saimariejohnson4 June 2022
This movie is absolutely beautiful. It is the perfect story for middle-aged kids, parents, and the dynamic between a hardworking father and a son who is navigating grief was delivered with perfect execution. It's funny, heartwarming, tear-jerking, and just all-around a fantastic family film. Quaid's performance as Beauchamp was spot on, and Queen Latifah was a no-nonsense truth-teller in the most beautiful way, per usual. This is an incredible film.

Meaningful storyline, just some poor actors
dvhrrld-9731022 May 2023
Kind of surprised this movie has such a low rating. It is not great but does not deserve a 4 rating. I gave it a 6 for the storyline but what really brought the movie down was some of the poor actors they chose for the parts. Shocking how bad Dennis Quaide was in the movie, he is a much better actor than what he showed here. The weak link was the girl who played Sistine character. She needs to go back to acting school. Do not skip watching this movie based off the low ranking but instead give it a chance for a storyline that had a lot of meaningful moments. Would I have paid to go see this movie in the theaters, probably not but was worth a watch from home.

Fight was kind of weird as well. Also there was not a lot of action at all there were small parts of it. The girl. I did not like the movie as much as I thought I would but that's just me.
