Wonderful, heartwarming film.
mubduh16 March 2013
I very much enjoyed this film - as many have pointed out, no sex, no violence, good acting, warm story line. The characters and story moved along pretty realistically. I say that based on my experience of raising a son whose father did not participate in his life.

I am sorry that ludovica36 made such awful comments about it. I find it hard to believe that anyone who actually watched the movie would have things like that to say. And take the time to post something so extreme and nasty.

You know what they say about reviews - toss out the highest and the lowest and go with those in between. Obviously, the other reviewers here saw the same movie I saw in the light it was intended to be seen in.

Pen Pals
bkoganbing10 May 2018
Both newly divorced Lori Loughlin and her small son Charles Henry Wyner are moving west to live with grandmother Stefanie Powers who looks mighty good for a grandma. Both have some adjusting to do, Loughlin at a new job and Wyner with a new school and no friends. But a teacher's assignement to write to a soldier whose unit is headquartered at nearby Fort Sebastian, but whose unit is on peacekeeping duty in Kosovo starts a nice change of events.

The soldier is Sgt. Johnny Messner who's had his own relationship problems, but the unit is recalled back to their base at Fort Sebastian and this gives Messner a chance to meet the family of his young pen pal.

As this is a Hallmark romance movie, need I say more? Both Loughlin and Messner have a lot to work through, but they are getting all kinds of encouragement from everyone around them.

This one's a winner from Hallmark.

Simple and wholesome
Jackbv12317 March 2021
Here's the premise. A recently divorced mom takes her 10 year old son and moves in with her mother in California. The kid's dad was mostly absentee. The kid wants to play baseball, but stinks. For a school project he writes a Army sergeant in Bosnia.. In one letter he tells him about his problems with baseball. The sergeant gets shipped home and ends up where? You guessed it. 20 miles up the interstate from the kid. Now sit down and write the plot outline for the rest of the movie. Say maybe 5 or so plot points. At least half the people who do this will write the exact outline of this movie. The rest will miss only a couple plot points.

So why did I enjoy this? It's simple and wholesome. Forget about Lori Loughlin's criminal history. Unfortunately that hurts her reputation as Miss Wholesome, but it does change the fact that she fits that part 100%. This is a nice feel good romance with decent chemistry. I thought it interesting that there was a whole lot of kissing, but even the kissing was simple.

There's no surprises. The only tension is Vince's looming deployment.

Meet My Mom-When the 2nd Time Around is So Perfect ***1/2
edwagreen1 June 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Despite being highly predictable, this is an absolutely wonderful film where a lonely boy, a product of a divorce, whose father totally ignores him begins to write to a soldier stationed in Bosnia. When the guy, Vince, comes back to the U.S. on leave, he finds love with the mother of the boy, played by Lori Loughlin.

Everyone in the cast is just great as the 2 people fumble their way to love. The best part is that this film doesn't become tragic with someone getting killed at the end. That was a welcomed relief.

Though the two wish to part company when Vince is to be shipped out, they thankfully come to their senses.

You're left with such a good feeling when the film ends. Here are 2 people who never thought they could love again, how wrong they were and how lucky we are to have this film.

What A Pleasant TV Film!!! *Possible Spoilers!!!*
TheFabulousThomasJ8 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Usually I'm very wary with most TV films, especially those coming from the Lifetime, Oxygen, WE or Hallmark channels. Most are either the violent poor-poor-pitiful-me womens variety or they are so saccharine and preachy they make me gag! But "Meet My Mom" is a most pleasant film that didn't insult my spirit or my intelligence; I really cared what happened to the people involved.

The plot, in short: 7 year-old Jared Marshall (Charles Henry Wilson) strikes up a school project pen pal in the form of Army Sergeant Vince Carerra (a genuinely warm Johnny Messner). When Sgt. Carerra returns from overseas, he decides to look up the young Jared and in the process makes friends with the young lad's mother (a fine Lori Loughlin). Very gently, with little moments of every day life, these three people begin to bond.

Granted, it's not "Meet Me In St. Louis" and yet it is; there's a kindness to these characters that has been long missing from television (or films for that matter). It is so very nice to sit down to a film and watch it and care about characters without feeling like your soul has been sullied or your emotions masturbated.

And it is always a delight to see the wonderful Stefanie Powers, this time as Lori Loughlin's mother, Louise Metcalf. Ms. Powers is a great anchor for any production and "Meet My Mom" is blessed to have her.

The ending I won't spoil for you; Sgt. Carerra finds himself, after building a relationship with mother and son, ready to ship off once more overseas. Will they or won't they marry? The finale does satisfy, but don't bet the farm on a M-G-M happy ending.

Not much not to like here
juneebuggy24 November 2017
I enjoyed this one quite a bit following Lori Loughlin as a divorcée who falls for a soldier home on leave who through a pen-pal friendship becomes a mentor to her 10 year old son. Despite their mutual attraction the pair are hesitant to start a romance in light of the soldiers upcoming deployment overseas.

This was just one of those nice romances where by the end you are really pulling for the couple, very sweet and slow burning. Johnny Messner as the soldier is easy on the eyes and plays a super nice guy. I also enjoyed Lori Loughlin as the mom and fun to see Stephanie Powers again as grandma.

Not much not to like here, everyone is likable and nothing terrible happens, no violence. Except for some repetitive dialogue and the lame military scenes at the barracks this was a sweet little movie. Contains a small amount of prayer and god talk as most of these Hallmarks do, nothing too in your face though.

Heartwarming Movie
cistymac13 August 2011
I loved this movie. I was supposed to go to a dance tonight and got caught up in this movie and never left the house! I hope there is a sequel. The story line was great and the acting was so natural. It's coming on tomorrow and I will be right here to watch it! It was great to see Stephanie Powers acting again. The movie was just so down to earth and wholesome. It was great to see a story that had no cursing, no violence, no sex, no police, no crime - just a genuine story of love, caring and affection between people. I certainly hope the writer is working on the second part of this movie because there certainly should be a follow-up to the story. It also helped me to appreciate the sacrifices of our military families.

100% the worst movie I have ever seen in my life
ludovica3611 July 2012
Trite, hackneyed, badly written, diabolically acted vomit fest of epic proportions. Every cliché in the book, with unrealistic characters who are totally unlikeable because they are just too perfect in every way. This film offers no plot, no incident, no interest and I'd assume it was written by a ten year old Barbie obsessed girl if I didn't have more respect for children's imagination..I love a good romance as much as the next person, but the characters seemed so unrealistic I simply wasn't able to believe a single word of it. Stefanie Powers was the only thing about this movie I liked, and even she has done much much better things in the past. Watch this film if you love to be talked down to from a fantastic height.. otherwise, avoid like the plague

Wonderful moving film
tottondude15 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I have joined IMDb just to review this film, this is how much I loved it. A lovely, moving, heart-warming film. The chemistry between the actors playing Dana and Vince was very good, you could really feel the love there. Also wonderful to see Stefanie Powers in action, she is still a beautiful lady and a pleasure to watch.

I normally record these afternoon movies just to watch in the background as I do more important stuff, but this movie I was gripped from the start and I watched it fully.

Its sending out a very important message about the sacrifices that armed personnel have to make about leaving their nearest and dearest for months or even years at a time, going overseas to risk their lives for their country and having to face the daily prospect that their chosen loved one may not want to hang around and wait for them to get back.

Jared was a great little actor too, I really felt for him with his genetic dad being a moronic twit and abandoning him, then he connected with Vince and life got good again. It was great to see Jared and his grandma teaming up to get Dana and Vince together, committed and happy.

All I can say is if this film comes along on your TV schedule, make the effort to record and watch it, you will not be disappointed.

A very warm movie about the power of love and family values
marko-v22 August 2011
Warning: Spoilers
After seeing a lot of Hallmark-made movies, this one really stands out. The story is somewhat original, but is very realistic at the same time. Here we have a 10-year old boy Jared (Charles Henry Wyson) and his mom Dana (Lori Loughlin) who have just moved to her mother Louise's (Stefanie Powers) house after Dana divorced Jared's father. As a school project, Jared writes a "support letter" to a randomly selected soldier who is in Europe on a peace keeping mission. Little did this boy know that this will be a start of a wonderful friendship with sergeant Vince Carrera (Johnny Messner), an oversea soldier he was writing to. Vince also has one bad marriage behind him, after his wife left him while he was on a mission. Jared and Vince strike out a good time while training baseball after meeting each other in person. Vince soon starts to fill in all the emptiness in Jared's life induced by his biological father who never had time for him. The story then puts a romantic flavor between Dana and Vince, who soon start dating. Even though a romance is involved, there are no sex scenes. Vince is a soldier, yet there are no violent scenes shown. All this adds to a very likable story with unnecessary sex and violence parts. The characters are highly likable, the act is very natural, although with a bit too fast-paced scenes sometimes, but it also adds to the realism and natural performance. Vince is somewhat presented as a very positive male figure in this boy's life, and an understanding man for his mom Dana. You can really connect with the main characters and care for what will happen to them. Also, the movie is very well orchestrated, the soundtrack is nice, and the movie gives an ever-present sense of gratitude to God and thanksgiving. A wonderful touch, and a really lovely family values themed movie showing that love can overcome any obstacles.

A feel good movie
4dbirds7 June 2013
I don't write many TV related reviews. In fact I have not written one in many years. Having said that, I was clicking my way through the 350 or so FIOS channels on this rainy and cold day and caught in progress (I missed the first 10 or so minutes but it was easy enough to pick up the plot) this movie on the Hallmark Movie Channel. The HMC is not one of my favorite channels and I always thought of it as an LMN type channel with silly plots with outrageous detours along the 2 hour route.

What a pleasure watching a movie for a change without cursing, screaming, sex, etc. OK so it has a nice predictable ending but it was even nicer the way they got to the ending. How great it is to sit through a 2 hour movie without the usual distaste along the way. See it for yourself.

Great Movie
bmulford-969-8201515 February 2011
A great movie - plot moves along well, positive portrait of a real dad, enough romance without the sexual junk. Clean, family oriented, my whole family (wife, kids, in-laws) loves it. The actors and actresses are wonderful. Would have liked to see: - Chapel scene - the plot talks a lot about God, yet there is no scene depicting worship, I think a simple chapel scene would have been a great way to build the spiritual commitment to each other. - Family Support Group scene - the military is very good at welcoming in the new family members, especially those new to the military and pairing them with other women to support one another during deployments.

Other than that this is one of those movies we will end up buying and watching many times. No cursing, no sex, no violence, just a plain, simple yet moving - movie. This is what film making is all about!!!!

Sweet chick flick that deeply hit home for me!
huggibear25 March 2017
I loved this story because I served in the military and I know how lonely it can be for many who haven't any family that give a darn to send their very best, so they don't send anything at all. It was like that for me, but now I realize just how badly I wanted to leave my home state and head into the service to get so far away from them that it didn't matter. It stinks to be that way, but what use and good were they to me back then? They proved the same while I was in the service, so I stayed away and rarely looked back. Now I'm back home and most of my family are the same as they were back then, go figure! You think all those years would have made a difference, but not really. But back to the movie, it hit home for me because I could relate to the service member. He found love in a very unique manner. It was a heart-felt, touching Hallmark beauty! Without going into any details, it's just one of those movies you have to see to appreciate. I've experienced love during my military career, some the best ever and some like 'what the heck was that?'. Regardless, I never had a pen-pal like the service member in this movie did. We need more of this in our world, helping find unique ways to truly pour our hearts out to those who join our military and risk their lives by going into harm's way. We could be thinking outside the box about things we can do to support those who fight for our country's freedom. It's paramount that we stand for this. Most don't understand how important it is to support our military forces. Don't take what they do lightly, as that would be taking them for granted here. Some of them truly have a passion to put an end to the resistances against us in foreign lands. These movies, touch me deeply because of the duty I gave with my service commitment. But I hope you enjoy the movie as much as my household did. Lori Loughlin is a natural. She has been in many Hallmark movies that I've loved. And Johnny Messner, what a phenomenal actor! He has the best eye contact I've ever noticed in a movie. I definitely have to see what other movies he has been in. There's a wonderful display of emotions just in his eyes.

Ten years before Aunt Becky went to prison...
Racingphan231 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Lori Loughlin made some really good tv movies before she sacrificed her career for her daughters. This movie is now on UPTV, and mixes faith with patriotism in a refreshing way that you don't find in any media anymore.

Saw this years ago and just rewatched. Even better!!
smithduke16 August 2022
This is one of my top 10 Hallmark movies! The chemistry between the two leads was wonderful that you could feel it!! I'd hoped the ending would have had a follow-up or a sequel. The story was realistic and believable and it was a joy to watch!! Unlike today's Hallmark movies, the kiss came in the middle of the movie along with several more. Plus, they weren't interrupted. LOL.

Cross generational restart in life
SunnyDaise31 July 2021
Restarting life is never easy so this movie gives a boost of confidence. As well as including three generations in one home, this film looks at break up and new relationship, school, work, the army - so every viewer will relate somewhere.
