Kajol gives a salute-worthy performance in Revathi's somewhat emotionally absorbing euthanasia drama.
SAMTHEBESTEST14 December 2022
Salaam Venky (2022) : Movie Review -

Revathi's latest directorial, Salaam Venky, stars Kajol as the lead actress in a feature film, which is no less than a treat for her fans and movie buffs who know what quality acting is. Salaam Venky is based on a sensitive topic like euthanasia, which we have previously seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Guzarish." However, the discussional sense is far different from that film. The legal battle and medical terms are used differently and are attached to a sentimental bond between a mother and her son, along with several other relatives in the film.

Salaam Venky takes you into the lives of Venkatesh, aka Venky (Vishal Jethwa), and his mother, Sujata (Kajol). Venky has a rare disease called DMD, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which has shortened his life span. Sujata tries her best to keep him alive by battling out all the mental and physical traumas and financial issues. Venky wants to quit his life and donate his organs, but he doesn't know how difficult it is to go for euthanasia, which is an illegal process. Sujata fights the world and the entire legal system to fulfil her son's last wish, with the help of her daughter, a doctor, a lawyer, and a journalist.

Based on Shrikant Murthy's The Last Hurrah, Salaam Venky is a very emotional and inspiring story for the people who have gone through or are going through such situations (in some other fields also). While doing so, it goes a little off track and picks up a few unnecessary dramatic angles. Sammeer Arora and Kausar Munir's screenplay could have kept it within limits, and the engagement metre would have been higher than what it was. Maybe the idea was outdated and needed something more unique and fresh for the novelty factor. It's a miss there, but Human Connect and emotional segments cover the shortcomings.

Kajol has remained one of my favourite Bollywood actresses since her debut. Watching her in an acting-oriented role is a big cinematic pleasure for me, and Salaam Venky provided that. There are so many great performances in her filmography, but she just doesn't feel tired and keeps delivering with her next films. Salaam Venky shows you again why Kajol should never stay away from the screen. If you are making the list of top performances by female actors in the lead role this year, then count Kajol's name in it. Vishal Jethwa stunned us all with his devious role in Mardaani 2, but you need not fear as he plays a charming fella here. His performance remains of the highest caliber, but. Even the supporting cast is so good, be it Rajeev Khandelwal, Rahul Bose, Maala Parvathi, Ridhi Kumar, Prakash Raj, Priyamani, Kamal Sadanah, or Ananth Mahadevan. Every single character counts. A special mention goes to Aamir Khan's sweet cameo, and I'll tease you by saying that his identity is kept a secret until the very end.

On the technical front, Salaam Venky struggles to bring modern-day phenomena to life. Every time that Guruji character speaks, you hear a devotional tone-something you've heard in almost every daily soap and are sick of hearing. The cinematography has some noteworthy frames but is otherwise strictly average. However, the music is soul-stirring. No matter if it's not a big hit. The compositions are situational and really good. There are some funny dialogues with filmy gestures. Revathi's conviction on the subject is something you want to believe, even if her storytelling transports you to a bygone era. Salaam Venky works because of emotions and human connection, and who can forget Anand's biggest on-screen lesson: "Zindagi lambi nahi badi honi chahiye..." Salaam Venky salutes this spirit, along with a mother's brave choice in difficult situations. Watch it to learn that lesson again and to see Kajol's heartfelt performance.

SALAAM VENKY:-an emotional ride with epic performances
puranjanbasak10 February 2023
Salaam venky is a drama film directed by revathi.

Vishal jethwa has given an astounding performance. He has picturized a pretentious happy and teary eyed character beautifully. Kajol too is excellent as sujata, her anguish and sorrow for her son is very clear and heartwrenching. The chemistries are pure, some very organic and some very forced.

The music is excellent. The songs are very soft, and melodious. The cinematography is good.

But the screenplay has major flaws. It is not able to hold your attention throughout. It looses its oace constantly and loses grip of its viewers.

I rate it 8.

Beautiful film - an emotional rollercoaster!
mannykhan-3086728 February 2023
Just saw Salaam Venky and it is an emotional rollercoaster and beautifully told film! Despite box office numbers, the film is fantastic. Kajol was superb and her son with the terminal illness performed wonderfully. Aamir Khan had an extended cameo; his scenes had a very powerful impact and his performance is outstanding! Loved the scenes with Aamir and Kajol, they both are such a great pairing on screen. Enjoyed Revathy's direction and storytelling. Though some parts are a bit slow paced, it is a must watch film for all ages. I'd highly recommend watching at night alone or with family. Hats off to the team of Salaam Venky.

Good acting makes this emotional tear jerker watchable
madanmarwah27 March 2023
This is an emotionally charged story and people looking for entertainment over popcorn are advised to stay away. A bunch of tissues is required during most of the scenes and the soft hearted may be sobbing throughout. It is based on true events which took place some years back. It is essentially the sad story of the mother ( Kajol) of a young man ( Vishal Jethwa ) afflicted with a terminal illness. He wants to donate his organs and seeks to end his life through euthanasia. ( An issue which is being discussed at high levels). The mother initially objects to his desire for euthanasia but later relents. He had been abandoned by his father many years back, his mother watches helplessly, he has a teenaged sister, and a young pretty blind girl loves him. To take up the case legally enters a young lawyer ( Rahul Bose) who initiates a court case for permission for euthanasia. Prakash Raj plays the judge who presides over the case.

Director Revathi has made an emotionally absorbing movie without any diversions of any type. All actors have performed sincerely and audiences will easily relate to the behaviour of all characters. The pace is slow and there is an atmosphere of palpable sadness. However it all appears natural considering the nature of the storyline. The director has ensured that the movie does not slip into loud melodrama and the scenes remain subdued and underplayed.

Tear Jerker Throug &Through
magadalwarmayur9 December 2022
Based on true story this film dose what it was suposed to do it makes you sob .

Kajol and Vishal Jethwa's drama sets the tone right for an emotionally charged tale from the word go. And to its advantage, it does not let go of the momentum that is built early on. From the start, the viewer is made aware of the path the film is headed towards and that it won't be a happy ending of the conventional sort. But Salaam Venky builds up the expectations, turns them around, and treats us with a pleasant climax. Apart from its into-the-face dramatic and tear-jerking moments, it also gives us plenty of reasons to smile about. The movie is not on a one-way track to drain the viewers of all emotions but tempers the journey with light-hearted moments and holds our hand through an optimistic ending.

The movie sets off at a slow pace and builds the mood. Revathy knows that in order to invest in her story, the audience will need to relate to the characters and their world first. Thus, she uses only a few locations and lets her actors do their job. In fact, the entire film has a seemingly low production budget because the locations are just a handful. The viewers get immersed in the struggles of a terminally ill patient and the deep turmoil the mother and the family are in while they fulfill Venky's last wish of euthanasia.

Salaam Venky presents a deeply humane subject. It should be enjoyed with your near and dear ones.

Don't go thinking its light hearted film it will break you.

Good movie with average script
somenjana16 December 2022
Movie is good, but, it could be much better. Whenever, a movie is made on real incident, mature audience wants to know how much it depicts with the actual facts.

And here the salaam venky failed. Unnecessary synthetic emotions suppressed the originality. Some stereotype Bollywood masala killed an excellent show. As Kolavennu Venkatesh donated his eyes, so, the film forcefully introduced his blind girlfriend, who gets his donated eyes in the climax ! This is just one example. Aamir Khan's character is forcefully introduced. No ultimate meaning.

Acting is good, songs are good. Vishal Jethwa, after Mardaani 2, gives great performance. Riddhi Kumar is refreshing and really looking like Kajol's daughter.

Finally it's a well made movie but the script I'll rate very poor.

Kajol as Sujatha will stay in your mind
queenlinds11 December 2022
Kajol plays Sujatha, a mother whose son will die. She cannot changes this fact. She loves her son more than anything else but she cannot change the fact that her son is going to die before her. Not all these facts are mentioned in the film. But Kajol's emotions make it clear why she is so afraid, why she is feeling helpless. This is the most challenging role of Kajol's career and she scored star marks. Her performance is easily comparable to Cameron Diaz's My Sister's Keeper. Some will feel Kajol is even better.

For the rest, Revathy did okay as a director. Vishal is good but sometimes a bit.

Not that great !
Innacana1 March 2023
What a waste of time !!! There is no real message in the movie, nor anything accomplished through the course of the movie. The ending/resolution of the movie does not provide any satisfying or decisive scenario either. We don't understand what the movie is solely based of, other than a sob story of an attention seeker boy.

Some of the decisions made by the characters were also very hazy or poor. What were the writer and screenplay thinking when they were creating this story? Acting was good, that's about it.

The movie is so slow and uneventful that it was very boring to watch. Completely wasted time watching this !

Brilliantly directed movie with stellar performances
privenkatesa10 December 2022
Saw this movie today. Excellent performances and heart warming. Be warned: this is not your typical bollywood masala type movie. The story is the hero. Performances are top notch. Direction is brilliant. Ravi Varman's cinematography is beauty and visuals are terrific. Brilliantly crafted movie. Again this is a emotional tear jerker/ intense and will touch your soul and you will value your life more. Every cast member has done justice to their roles. The little love story in fhe first half is so beautiful. Music is great and loved how songs were taken.

Hats off Revathy Mam, Kajol, Vishaljethwa and the entire cast and crew.

like other thousand Bollywood films
saru202025 June 2023
Based on the concept of thousands of Bollywood movies made previously and I'd say there's nothing special in it except different actors maybe.

The plot is too old but still, the characterisation of the protagonist & love for the visually impaired girl gives a good feel and Kajol's acting is like a cherry on top while doing what mom would never do to her kid, that's all, that's it about this film, nothing special at all.

This film is probably proof that Aamir Khan has lost his stature as a top actor and he needs to do something by giving a comeback or else his career might end up sooner than Amitabh's.

Kajol's performance was brilliant!!
shanalied11 December 2022
I had the pleasure of watching Salaam Venky today. Such a powerful, raw & heartbreaking performance by Kajol! She delivered this role & every emotionally charged scene within the film with such passion - I walked out feeling simultaneously satisfied & devastated.

Vishal took the role of Venky and ran all the way to my heart with his performance. I smiled everytime he smiled and cried when his heart broke due to so many shattering disappointments.

This duo and the relationship they portrayed between Venky and Sujata was truly heart-warming. Every scene was powerful and the message that was conveyed is truly an important one to take home.

Poor Script
sanjeevanwar15 February 2023
Anwar Says: Euthanasia- right to die, a subject needed research and probably a more matured director. Revathi has been a terrific actor but direction is not a cake walk. Story borrowed from The Last Hurrah by Srikant Murthy with additional input by Kausar Munir has an over- stretched first half and use of ineffective and unnecessary songs . When a movie has enough to move people, there is absolutely no need to add more into it.

I would call it an overdose of emotion in the first half to the extent you feel like taking a loo- break. Only powerful performance of Kajol and Vishal Jerhwa, a born actor, tries to save the movie. In the second half the movie progresses with court and electronic media and relieves the audience from monotony , but that too in parts. Kajol's backstory not properly explained and what are her sources of paying hefty bills of hospital is mystery . What Revathi wanted to convey to create Amir Khan as a fictional character, only she knows. It's a sheer wastage.

Overall, a thought provoking subject , real touching moments and bravura performance but insipid script, opulence of same sequence and love of director to songs spoiled the dish. Watch it only for the actors. 2.5 out of 5 from me.

Best movie of kajol so far...
deepikarangers9 December 2022
I am watching the movie right now and crossed half way.. this should be the best movie of kajol in her entire career. Must not only just watch this movie but should also experience it.. i just couldn't stop reviewing the movie midway .. as this is the first show and i think i should give a genuine review.

It's begins with a slow start and gradually filling with emotions, suspense, love and caring of a family.. this story is about a mother who goes to extra length to fulfil the dreams of her son who is dying of untreatable disease. I believe kajol single handedly made this movie a successful one.

Kajol is the heart & Soul of Salaam Venky
pnkjshrm-6275910 December 2022
Salaam Venky is a movie about the mother & son relationship, their bond, how true unconditional love means letting go & not holding back for another while because of own sake. The film deals with the concept of Euthanasia & organ donation therefore bringing more awareness about them. The film also sheds a great deal of light on disability, the plight of a single woman who faces a lot of hardships while raising her children alone, how the family suffers when one of its member is terminally ill.

Kajol plays a single mother who leaves her husband's abode when he refuses to treat their son as he's a dead investment in his own words. She faces a lot of hardships in raising a terminally ill son whose life is short but in turn of events, she accepts his incoming death and promises to make her son's life larger by fighting for his right to die with dignity and organ donation.

Kajol who plays Sujatha, is beyond great in this movie. Such a fine actress! Her eyes displays all the complex emotions she's going through within extraordinarily. No other actress in Bollywood can cry the way she does, her strength is emotions. She also uplifts the movie to a greater degree with a superb performance in each and every frame.

Vishal Jethwa acts good in the movie but his acting feels more methodical than natural.

Aahana Kumra as the Journalist is the biggest plus point for the movie, after Kajol. Her entry in the movie brings the right amount of excitement in the movie. She's superb in all her scenes.

Rahul Bose, Rajeev Khandelwal, Priyamani, Prakash Raj, Anant Mahadevan, etc. All acted good but again methodical, didn't feel natural and connected with me.

The girl who played Nandu is another brilliant part of the film. Loved her natural acting, same goes for the girl who played Venkatesh's sister.

The weakest link of this movie is the director Revathy. I expected a lot out of her but she falls short of delivering it. It clearly shows that she returned to direction after 18 years. The film could've avoided all these songs and invested more time in the storyline. The songs were a distraction to the story. Also, the film felt depressing most of the times due to the lighting, background and overall sets designed for this movie. Revathy's direction is outdated and it seems she has no idea of making a commercial film. This film better suits a direct OTT platform release.

Overall, Salaam Venky worked for me only and only due to Kajol's AMAZING performance, there's a reason why she's regarded as the best actress of this country.

Recommended Watch!!!
vpallasanderbooks16 December 2022
Salaam Venky is an offering coming straight out of the stables of Bollywood, and it is a great product, contrary to the string of flops or decent flicks that the public have been (not)enjoying the last couple of years. Salaam Venky is a neat movie with an impeccable script. Add to that, Kajol's fine acting and good direction by Revathi, and you really have a blockbuster.

The screenplay is just awesome. And this movie really showcases his writing mettle. The strength lies in the entire script. The story has its tear-jerking moments, which I loved. We paint a picture in our mind that all's not going to be well, but the story turns it around and there are some pleasant moments in the climax that I did not see coming. The dialogues are great. Hope more Bollywood movies learn from this. There's consistency in the momentum as well; the film just refuses to let go of the pace it has caught on from the start. Some portions of the movie can make you smile even.

The acting is spectacular. Kajol, especially. And the direction by Revathi, I can say it was great.

Overall, I recommend this movie. Do watch it and then review it. You will not be disappointed, I assure you.

LukaReshma18 December 2022
If you don't like this movie then I don't understand you.... I was not expecting this movie to make me feel the way it did. The acting was absolutely incredible and when I was watching salaam venky I was crying every 3 minutes because it was such a sad story but a story that has impacted me in so many ways and it made me think a lot about my future before I die too. I have watched over 1 million movies and salaam venky is the only movie that I can not get out from my mind, I still cry thinking about it and I keep reading the read story online. Vishal Jethwa and Kajol your acting was WOW well done.

CAN CHANGE LIFE PERSPECTIVE.
sumitkumarkarn13 February 2023
Many of the people would have recommended it to watch if it'd have been a holllywood movie or a South Indian movie.

Instead of reading my full review you can skip to the "NOTE" in the last

I can bet that in future many teachers, motivational speakers and even a spritual leader would ask you to watch this movie.

I would just like to ask you to watch this movie only if you don't expect Actions, Fake Melodrama, much twist or entertainment. Because it has predictable story line.

But if you want to see the motherhood, if want serious motivation then just go ahead and watch the masterpiece.

NOTE: For better experience I'd recommened you to watch it while being alone or in night.

A Masterpiece Movie according to me, after long time from Hindi Cinema. Loved everything but the Acting of "Kajol" and our most talented guy "Vishal Jethwa" Op. The whole feel, perfect lines, every clear Emotion...Oyee hoyeee Gajab bhai Gajab...

And and Damn Beautiful Music by Mithoon!

Really Underrated Movie, very less know about it, it should be SuperHit on Boxoffice just by Word of Mouth but unfortunately it doesn't happened, wrong timing I think, crushed in Negativity :(

I already Recommended it to my Friends, u too plz spread the words. /\

Salaam Venky already entered to my Fav Movies List (^_^)

P. S. It's also Full of Great Msgs, Learning and Motivation to live the life fullest. Stay happy, Be Kind!! :)
