Style way over
BandSAboutMovies6 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Lyla starts with a young boy running over a Mego Invisible Woman figure over and over again with a reflective toy care. Then his mother appears and tells him that things are going. To be different now that she has to leave. He begs her to stay and she reminds him that she will always love him before slicing open her own throat and bleeding all over the wallpaper.

Hugh (Clark Moore) takes his wife Lyla (Jolene Andersen) and son Lars (Mason Wells) on a getaway so that he can have the solitude that he needs to write his first book. As you can imagine, seeing that this is a horror movie, that escape from the distractions of modern society is short-lived. Have we learned nothing from every other writer who has tried to do the same and found strange people and familiar ghosts out to destroy not only his family but himself too?

Director and writer Gordon Cowie has only made this one film and it looks gorgeous. He definitely has skills as a cinematographer and unlike so many direct to streaming movies, this actually looks like a movie where someone has taken the time to make the colors rich, to think through the shots and to push things beyond just pointing and shooting.

As for what it's all about, I watched it twice and went back a few times to review things and I wonder if I've made it more complicated than it is. I didn't want to be one of the other people I've seen review this on Letterboxd and go off on it, because hey, I've watched enough giallo to make my way around a confusing narrative. Yet Lyla is so obtuse at times that I honestly can't tell you where the story begins or ends.

That said, it has one of the most beautiful depictions of someone smashing someone else's head with a rock on a wave swept beach I've seen, so there's that, right?

Come on...

Are you a fan of watching random sequences each about 2 minutes in length? Do you like watching movies which seem like they might be one long dream which is someone else's and makes no sense to you? Then this is must see cinema for you. I think the guy that made this little gem was trying to conjure up a modern day version of the Shining, if I had to try and explain it to someone but whatever the case, it's a huge fail. There is no way you watch this and say wow I'm glad I caught that one. It's not horror and it's so jumbled there is no real feel of suspense or it being classified as a thriller. Go on and watch it. You'll realize this warning to stay away was legit.

This made absolutely no sense

Warning: Spoilers
I watched the movie and was completely confused. I've seen some pretty bad movies in my 46 years and this one has found its way into the top 5. Who makes a movie that explains NOTHING? I've even tried to find an explanation for the film and can't. I looked at the screen a few times like wth am I watching. Who was crazy, him or her? Who was cheating, him or her? Did she kill her kid & him? Did he beat her with the rock? Who was the blonde chick? How did the dead guys wife find the house? This movie left more unanswered questions than I had when I started the movie and thought hmm... What's Lyla about?

Don't bother

Drawn out, confusing and I think maybe an attempt at 'artiness'?

The background music was discordant and annoying and as another has commented, the plot is so jumbled and piecemeal that there is no chance of suspense building. Just when you think something is going to happen in a sequence that makes sense it quickly switches to a totally irrelevant scene. It was as if the entire movie was a mass of unrelated scenes just cobbled together. Lasted about halfway in and then gave up. None of the characters appealed. I enjoy a movie that makes you think but unfortunately this one just wasted viewing time.

Arresting and Surreally Disturbing
WittgensteinNephew9 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Though clearly inspired by directors like David Lynch and Stanley Kubrick, this film creates a mood that's entirely its own. The plot's fractured and many of the scenes don't make a lot of sense, but that's not what this movie is about. Let it leave you with a feeling (try to describe it, the feeling-you can't) and wait a little while before subjecting it to interpretation or analysis. The cinematography is stunning, the acting is terrific (especially the actress who plays Lyla), and rhe dialogue is dark and sometimes deeply disturbing.

The best scene in the movie has cccurs in the boy's bedroom when Lyla's reading him some New Tesamwnt-inspired children's book which ends with something like, "God made your body and it is frail and easily broken." The camera pans to the child who's wide-eyed and terrified and then to Lyla, who just turns away and walks out the door.

Ultimately, it's an unforgiving account of unhealable trauma, distrust, and the impossibility of understanding between human beings.

Love the cinematography

Great film. I love the locations they used, the color is incredible and so is the camera work. Reminds me of a David Lynch film. The music is stunning as well! I love the film, it keeps you guessing and also leaves a lot up to personal interpretation. The lead actress does an amazing job. Looks like this is the director's first film and it's unbelievable as a very first film. It definitely gives the vibe of a more experienced crew. Considering only two people made the film and director did pretty much everything (except the sound design and music). This makes me look forward to see what he does next.
