Emotional and redemptive
debonator2 May 2023
The film has a bit of a slow start but stick with it, it is worth it in the end. The casting is great! What an amazing story of these two men's lives and such a powerful medium in film to tell the story to millions of other humans on this journey. It is the kind of film that will linger after you've watched it because the characters touch you so deeply. I hope Poland is going to be making more films of this caliber. The music is so good that I hit Shazam several times, but they must not have much of a Polish database because it couldn't find several of the pieces. So glad that Netflix is offering more international television and film.

Outstanding.

It's difficult to know where to begin. This is not your ordinary con meets mentor and makes good film. It goes much deeper and deals with life, death, human failings and the difference we can make to someone living with a terminal condition and what we can do or can't do to make their remaining time better. The acting is very good, the story flows nicely and you don't realise that it's based on real people until you're at the end. The actor who plays the priest gves a stellar perfomance and the other main characters and supporting cast just fit in so well. This is the best film I've watched this year and whilst it was a difficult watch in places I would recommend it.

Easy(how it possible) about not easy important events
andreyboolgakov3 April 2023
It's about real God's mercy through ordinary, really may be not saint people. Its not about religious life and rules. Its about real values, checked by time. I was crying like another reviewers, because its about people with whom we don't want to cross, and, someone can cross and can serve and help and can do it with open heart. And can teach how to do it. Its not a very famous but good actors and good playing. Its about hard events in life, but I watched it easy. There was not hard afterfeelings. Really want to recommend it. I'm not sure that you will be enjoyed but I believe you will be inspiried.

Heart warming movie...
ethanaf32 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I don't usually watch the typical drama... but damn this kind of movie, I can't hold my tears, to be honest, (I almost forgot that Im man enough im sobbing like a child, good thing I watch it alone, lol... I don't wanna go on the details with the movie plot, but this emphatic movie from being a delinquent persona to transform into something worth living for. Everyone of us deserves a second chances, and somewhere along the way in our life. We meet someone who could show and teach us the real purpose why we exist. The movie is commendable that deserves to be watch from all the cast actors, writers, directors and the rest who made it possible.

Magnificent life cut so short.

Warning: Spoilers
What an incredible inspirational and incredible story of this humble beautiful father, gives hope to anyone in any state. I hope one day he ends up In sainthood as he was a saint on earth. Rest in peace father Jen you are with Jesus now. What a massive loss to all of us on this insane planet. I wish they had told us more about the time since he was ordained even if they had made it 4 hours long. A true person of god and a follower of our lord and it also helps restore faith in us struggling with faith and suffering to find the righteous path. I would definitely recommend this movie to any open hearted and minded person.

Well worth the journey.
kieronpconnolly6 April 2023
A lovely movie, that doesn't shirk from the reality of dying; and it's all the stronger for that. For me, it's about two journeys of the human spirit, both physical and beyond. And although the priest is Roman Catholic, it's a story that includes - and goes beyond that. Muslim, Jew, and so it goes, goodness exists in all of us. The acting was magnificent, and the two leads played off each other with a professional ease that was a joy to behold. No spoilers. Just watch it and take from it what you will. This isn't a 'message' movie, just a journey that's well worth partaking in, and to cast and crew: well done.

Immensely Beautiful and Sad in equal measure
InnerWisdom100028 June 2023
This is probably a very difficult film for most to watch. And that is completely understandable and OK. But if you can persevere, this film will reward you with how true kindness, love and selflessness really is. It shows us that all of us have the capacity to give of ourselves to othes at some point in our lives, no matter how small in measure. And that love and kindness no matter how small we might think it might be to us, can have an enormous effect on those who receive it.

This was a giant of a man, who happened to be a priest, who inspired and uplifted all those who knew him. And many who didn't.

In a world that is dark and much divided in so many ways, this film gives us the hope and chink of light that each of us has the ability to make a difference. And that we should never forget this.

Thank You sincerely to all involved in the making of this heart-warming and deeply powerful film.

I'm not a recovering Catholic, so I loved, loved, loved it.
josiahkwhite20 July 2023
If you despise the Catholic Church, you might have difficulty with this movie. If you don't want to face the topic of dying, you also might want to skip this movie.

But I'm a recovering Protestant, so I'm a lot more likely to have problems with so-called "Christian" movies done by American Christian conservatives. In fact, as a Christian, I consider it a special treat when I find a good Christian movie which is NOT your typical movie made by conservative Protestants. This is one of those rare treats, and it's the best of them all.

I also love those ennobling movies where the hero of the movie lives a life where his actions are far more praiseworthy than the life of a typical Christian -- even when the movie isn't about Christians at all. For example, Schindler's List; can you possibly have a better hero than Oskar Schindler? This movie isn't a blockbuster movie like Schindler's List. No, this is more of a "little" movie. But it might actually be as good as Schindler's List. I also liked My Name is Khan, which is far less realistic than Johnny or Schindler's List. But in that movie, a Muslim acts as heroically as any Christian ought to act. And don't actions speak louder than words?

Actions certainly speak louder than words in this movie. While the real saint of the movie is Johnny, the movie's main protagonist is Patrick. By the end of the movie, you'll love them both. A lot.

Stunning Cinema
cfarrell2926 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
A beautiful and deeply moving piece of cinema. Johnny is based on the life of well-known young Polish priest, Jan Kaczkowski, who dedicated his life to helping those discarded by society. We see Jan fight to build a hospice before encountering Patryk an ex-criminal sentenced to community service at the hospice. An unlikely friendship develops as Jan continues to teach acceptance and forgiveness even in the face of his own terminal diagnosis.

The film is extremely well shot with exquisite performances from the entire cast. The soundtrack, lighting and real life footage take the lead at all the right moments. The film never forces anything on the viewer which is extremely refreshing. If you enjoyed the French film The Intouchables, then I highly recommend Johnny.

Jan Kaczkowski's story deserved a stunning portrayal and the production team, cast and crew should hold their heads high. A job very well done.
