Never been a more killable character!
davetotherescue852 October 2022
I watched the first episode and was a little hesitant to keep watching but gave it a shot anyway. By the second and third episode I was hooked...mostly by my own desire to murder JP myself. Out of all of the shows and movies I've seen in my life I don't think I've ever seen such a well written character as JP. The vile, evil things this character says just blows my mind and I really have to applaud 👏 the writers of this show. Claes Bang (JP) is amazing in this role and delivers each of his cutting, stinging, hurtful lines perfectly with the facial expressions to match. I would have given this show a 9.5 or 10 except the first episode didn't really hook me. So just stick with it a little.

To kill or not to kill Jean-Paul...
DukeEman20 August 2022
What a nasty piece of work is the brother-in-law, John Paul (a very effective portrayal from Claes Bang). You just want to kill him yourself! There is always one of those nasty horrible kinds in a family. So watching the sisters plot and enact Jean Paul's demise is such a pleasure in the most macabre way!

The magic is the relationship between the sisters that feels so authentic, the way they look out for one another and bounce of each other with convincing banter. I just want to be part of this wonderful twisted family. The extra bonus is the bumbling insurance half-brothers who add the entertaining value as they attempt to break the mysterious case open.

Haven't seen the Belgian version, but this UK remake looks like it's going to stand on its own, thanks to the performances, playful direction and a script that has so much on offer after the first two episodes, enough to get you addictive to this dark comedy thriller.

A gem
rich-mac3 September 2022
Bad Sisters is brilliantly realised in every detail, starting with its crackingly good script.

But it's also technically superb, with a great sound track and cinematography, coupled with really good locations.

The ensemble is terrific, clearly having a really good time with their material, and deliver plenty of laugh out loud moments, but quite capable of the requisite pathos essential for a show of this nature.

Bad Sisters is a true black comedy in every sense of the word - but a sympathetic one - with a rich vein of Irish humour that bubbles to the surface and keeps us invested in the Sister's fortunes. So even though the girls are up to no good, there's always the hanging question - 'but are they, really?' - cos we identify with their predicament and the judgements they're forming. So we all end up conflicted - brilliant!

If you're an overly sensitive male ie. You don't like it when the worst traits of male behaviour get exposed and a corresponding comeuppance, ... then you really need to watch this show and desensitize, it'll do you good and offer some perspective on how everyone else gets left in the wake of selfish male boorishness.

I'm cheering for the Sisters! Way-to-go!

This show is so funny and clever, 10/10
bruce-1291 October 2022
Having seen Sharon Horgan in the series "Catastrophe" I respect and admire her writing, comedy and performance so much that I will watch anything she is in at this point.

"Bad Sisters" is a wickedly funny, brilliantly written, brilliantly acted, and brilliantly directed and just all around clever and so human - both the good and bad, that it stands out immediately.

There is no real violence, car crashes, special effects, it is all very human, the real drama and agony of what some people do to others, smoothed out with hilarious circumstances and comedy. I love this show.

John Paul, one sister's abusive husband otherwise known as "The Prick" to all the sisters is so marvelously and diabolically written and acted that I don't know if I can ever see this actor again in anything else and not hate him for being so evil in such a banal role. Two minutes of watching him constantly call his wife "Mammy" ... it's honestly, just upsetting, because he is so realistic you want to kill him yourself or see to it that he dies.

This series walks the fine line between comedy, drama and tragedy so perfectly, I have to rate it a 10/10.

I love these types of shows

In your face and borderline offensive. I loved it. I had no expectations but after two episodes, I'm loving this series. Give it a try, you'll love it. Dark comedies with a tinge of drama are my favorites. A+!

My #1 Pick For 2022
cnsmkzvs7 October 2022
I'm not sure I understand ANY other rating than 10/10 for this spectacular comedy/thriller/drama. I hate waiting a week til the next episode. LOVE every cast member. Love the writing, the plot line, the acting, the scenery. Besides Severence, Bad Sisters just blows everything I've seen this year out of the water. I'm a huge Sharon Horgan fan - it's hard to say if this is her best work, but if not it's certainly close to it. At the end of every single episode I'm amazed at the cliffhanger ending. Not sure how they do it for EVERY episode, but they do! If you're not watching this show now...hurry up and start watching! It will NOT disappoint. LOVE this show!

Best Show I've Seen in a While!!
ilovemovies74316 September 2022
I can't recommend Bad Sisters enough! It's hilarious, cute, sad, funny and shocking. It's a bit of everything! These sisters have a strong bond and will obviously do anything for each other. Even when it gets messy they stick together. Each has their own story and character growth but together it's the best entertainment. J. P. Is a real a-hole and you'll hate his character but also feel a bit sorry for him at times.

All the actors are incredible. I just love Eve Hewson, Sharon Horgan, Sarah Greene and Cleas Bang. Together they all make it look easy. The landscape it beautiful. Makes me want to go to Dublin. I highly recommend Bad Sisters and crossing my fingers there will be another season. It's so original and smart. Watch it. You won't regret it!!!!

F-cking brilliant and fun!
johnmondeng29 August 2022
This is a great show!!! Heard about this in the NY Times and I've seen several series that Sharon Horgan was in and loved them all and this is no exception! It's got pieces of everything; comedy, drama, mystery, little dating/romance. Really enjoy the way this story is being told. I'm hooked. Highly recommended series.

Reminds me a bit of Big Little Lies or whatever that HBO series was but a lot more fun to watch and more relatable characters. Gotta check this out.

It will be interesting to see if this is a one series thing given the plot. The actors are great so I'm going they can do another season.

Entertaining
bobetjo25 August 2022
The acting is convincing. Especially Claes Bang, from Denmark, playing the controlling bully.

The story has some red herrings to keep us guessing. There is enough action and humour to carry along what could have been very dark.

Brilliant on all levels.

Warning: Spoilers
The writing, the directing, the acting, the music tracks, the plot, the humour and pathos. An absolutely amazing series.

Sharon Horgan writes and is one of the leads, the eldest sister who takes care of her 4 sisters when their parents die in an accident. The sisterly relationships feel so real, the squabbling mixed with love and the loyalty.

John Paul the brother-in-law they all detest, apart from his loyal wife, encapsulates the clever evil narcissist abuser manipulator. From the moment he addresses his wife as "mammy" I hated him. He is known as "The Prick" to the others.

It's challenging to write and direct a series which encompasses comedy and drama and breathtaking plot twists but this one succeeds and incredibly well.

A rare 10 out of 10 from me. It knocked my socks off. Colour me gobsmacked.

Less Good with each Successive Episode
levybob19 November 2022
The first three episodes of 'Bad Sisters' gave me hope. Funny, dramatic, a villain to detest (I mean it; this guy gets worse in each flashback episode), that same villain murdered, heroes (five sisters) to love and want to protect and to root for. The humor was provided by, of all things, a pair of insurance agent brothers. They're investigating the murder of the villain so that they don't have to pay out to the villains' beneficiaries. And it's them, the insurance guys, who add that extra bit of clout to the story, add a definite comedic touch, and add that extra bit of suspense each time they interview one of the sisters. It's a bit like a gender-driven horse-race; will the brothers or sisters prove to be victorious.

So, What more could one ask?

1. Brevity. One could ask for that. 'Bad Sisters' feels too long. Ten episodes? No. Better off with eight. Even seven. Or fewer. It could have been a great two hour movie. During my viewing I felt that certain events, certain kinds of situations, seemed repeated. And repeated again. And that might not be so bad if, with each repeated situation, the scenes' were faster paced. Think of Roadrunner Cartoons. We all know the Coyote is gonna fail to catch the Roadrunner. And with each successive attempt the failure comes faster, and, as such, it comes with greater 'punch'. Well, with 'Bad Sisters' each 'repeated type of situation' is awarded the same amount of set up time, though the viewer knows that each attempt is going to fail. And this problem began to take over the story. And my patience was growing thin.

2. Focus. There was a growing suspicion (in me) that distractions had been inserted into the story to stretch out its telling to ten episodes. Blind alleys. Red Herrings. Added motives. As I said, impatience was growing.

3. A better ending. Now I am not going to give anything away here. But I am going to tell you this. It seemed to me as though the ending were written and directed by someone who had little to do with the preceding nine episodes. Moreover, the viewer learns some incredibly important facts that had been kept hidden through those episodes. And, to me, that's a breach of contract with the viewer; since the sisters seem to share almost everything with each other, the hidden information would have been something discussed by them, and discussed frequently. But the director / writer believed that knowing that information would ruin the experience for the viewer. Except ... he's / she's wrong. We would not have felt as betrayed as we do with the final episode's exposition.

Anyway, Bottom Line: Worthwhile. Especially if you keep in mind some of what this review has stated.

Enjoy.

Original funny and black
tm-sheehan15 October 2022
Review - Bad Sisters Streaming on Apple TV plus My Rating 9/10

The last episode of this Irish ten part mystery black comedy thriller series was so worth waiting for no spoilers in my review .

Based on the Flemish series Clan this version was filmed in Ireland and developed by Sharon Horgan,Dave Finkel and Brett Baer .

The sisters are Eva Garvey played by Sharon Horgan, Becka Garvey played by Eve Hewson. Grace Williams played by Anne-Marie Duff ,Bibi Garvey played by Sarah Greene and Ursula Flynn played by Ursula Flynn.

The plot is simple and original how do these four protective sisters save sister Grace from her stifling controlling sorry no other word suffices arse hole of a husband John Paul played to poisonous perfection by Danish actor Claes Bang?

Various plots to eliminate John Paul are discussed as we find out in episode 1 that their nemeses is in fact dead but we don't know how he died or who killed him till episode ten.

The series main focus is how John Paul who detests the closeness of his wife Grace's sisters tries every effort to isolate Grace from their protective care and influence. He proceeds to cause hurt and havoc in each of these strong women's lives .

I cant think of a better example or justification at the moment to eliminate a toxic male like John Paul other than perhaps Vladimir Putin .

There are 2 other fine male actors that add to this entertaining series besides Claes Bang as John Paul Williams . Brian Gleeson as Insurance Investigator Thomas Claffin and Daryl McCormack as his adopted brother Matthew both are terrific and play very amusing characters. Those who have recently seen Daryl McCormack as Leo Grande opposite Emma Thomson in the excellent movie Good Luck to You, Leo Grande will be impressed I'm sure with his very different character role as Matthew Claffin in Bad Sisters .

I'm sure we will see more of this handsome actor ,although you couldn't see much more of him after Leo Grande where he spends most of the film naked in bed with Emma Thomson I rated that movie an 8/10 in my review.

Director Rebecca Gatward and her team of Josephine Bornebusch and Dearbhla Walsh have created a cohesive and entertaining series .

It's long at 10 episodes but I will watch it again now that all episodes are available as you tend to forget little plot twists waiting for another weekly instalment.

It's a very funny script considering the subject matter as mentioned it's been adapted to an Irish setting by Brett Baer and Dave Finkel from the original Flemish series Clan.

Good but could have been great!
Thinker36524 July 2023
Enjoyable dark comedy that drags its way through to its inevitable end. This is a well-made series with a good cast that has a number of moments highlighting how suspenseful and sharply funny it might have been.

I'd happily have rated it higher if the number of episodes were reduced to 8 with few changes. As it is, and as the story proceeds, the suspense fades and impatience begins to set in, and at times, the humour while probably never trying isn't particularly sharp.

It is still better than plenty of TV being made at the moment though, but it is hard not to watch it in its entirety and not think that there was a great high quality 6 episode series that has been extended to the detriment of the suspense, humour and storytelling. (I also probably could have done with one less sister as I never fully warmed to the two younger sisters).

I think the creators should have considered it job well done and moved on as I don't think it warrants a second series. Perhaps a brand new story centring around the insurance agent(s) could be fun but the sisters are best off left swimming in the sea. Don't flog a rightfully dead JP.

Extremely bad
anu895210 September 2023
I was really eager to watch this show because of its high rating, but unfortunately, it turned out to be incredibly disappointing. I could only stomach a few episodes, and I couldn't bring myself to continue. The characters are all unlikable, and the romance between the lead actors is completely implausible and unconvincing. I'm usually a fan of shows with strong female lead characters, but this one had a terribly executed plot and was painfully boring. Some of the storylines in this show are so cringe-worthy that they literally make my skin crawl. The insurance agents trying to act like detectives is hands down the most boring and senseless time-wasting aspect I've ever encountered in a show.

Superb drama
FilmFreakForLife29 August 2022
Absolutely brilliant drama, gripping from the get go, and also very witty with lovely writing.

The Irish setting is beautiful and beautifully shot too with lovely cinematography. The characters are hugely relatable and we feel their pain and root for them throughout.

The baddie is so bad and played so well that you are desperate for him to die and rooting for the women who may or may not have killed him.

Lovely performances from all the cast but especially the sisters who are utterly believable as a family and have wonderful chemistry together.

Wish this was all available to binge - the week on week wait is unbearable!

Wow
kirbie218216 October 2022
I don't have anything important to say, but I think this show deserves more credit for how entertaining & smart & funny it was. All the characters were so interesting & played to perfection by all involved. I especially enjoyed the youngest sister & her insurance guy love interest. I thought they were really believable & fun to watch. All the sisters were believable in their roles, and they all had amazing chemistry. The dude that played John Paul was really good too because he was so fun to hate. He Musta had a really fun time playing that role b/c he was just so over the top bad. I like how it all played out. I wasn't sure at first, but after 3 episodes I found myself checking Apple + daily waiting for the next episode & eventually Friday became my favorite day of the week b/c I knew I could watch another episode of this show. It was really well done. I enjoyed the ending too. Really good show.

Upcoming Emmy Winner
mohebedmon-708-81076715 October 2022
This is hands down the best series to come out this year at least, everything was perfectly executed to the finest detail.

Rarely does a TV series manage to do more than one thing with such perfection, it does comedy really well, I laughed in most of the episodes more than once, it does drama really good as well I teared up in more than one occasion, it got suspense and mystery elements as well.

Combine all that with engaging storytelling, perfect time jumps, marvelous cinematography and breathtaking scenery of Ireland, and out of this world heartfelt acting masterclass and you get this masterpiece.

I am really sad that it is over, I know it is a limited series but I really hope they produce a second season, a work of this quality is hard to often find. Thank you for all this work producers and contributers.

TW: Coercive Control
Smartiebell27 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Anyone who thinks the main character of this show is merely just 'hateable' (and he is extremely hateable) doesn't fully understand how coercive control works. Coercive control is now a criminal offence in Ireland under section 39 of the new domestic violence act 2018 but still not enough is understood about it.

This show does a great job at showing the manipulation that goes on in a relationship where a partner is abusive and it could be triggering for someone who has experienced something similar from a partner. Despite the dark and serious subject the relationships between the sisters and the rest of the community is funny and also sweet. Gallows humour at its best. Would recommend, with caution.

Had me on my seat
DVK123419 July 2023
I can't say enough about this limited series. The likability factor was present for all of the characters with the exception of the antagonist, of course. I couldn't stop watching because I wanted to find out what happens to JP, does he actually die and by whom? The subplots with Becky and Matt, Beck's and Minna, Ursula and Ben, Eva and Gabriel, Gracie and Roger all held my interest. I rooted for them all and I cursed at JP. I haven't hated a character on TV with that kind of intensity in a long time.

If you like whodunnits, I recommend this series for you!

Apple TV has really been on point. Their shows are not filled with vulgarity and over the top unecessary smut, like Netflix. So far, all the series' I've watched in Apple have been great.

Absolute Genius, SharonHogan nails it again!
rebeccahughes-875506 September 2022
This is Sharon Hogan again, displaying absolute genius through her portrayal of a light thriller this time.

Saddled firmly to her comedic mind it's an excellent series NOT to be missed. I was completely immersed within her vision of how comedy within this genre can produce class drama and when Hogans team collide their talents together It produces impressive viewing. Stella storytelling through outstanding writing delivered by sharp and relatable characters and of course in true Hogan style she delivers humour precise to the nature of the genre, it's everything you can expect to expect from her.

Cracking casting also, AnnMarie Duff - superb choice for the 'not so amazing' Grace. Baby Becka is my personal favourite as the sisters go and Wowwww, could they have cast JP any better? I think not.... The actor himself may now struggle to walk the streets in safety.

Shazza nails it yet again. Simple as that.

Watch this and bloody enjoy, it's quirky without irritation and makes you want to be a sister of theirs too!

Bad sisters is a well made dark comedy
sasanVL20 June 2023
Bad sisters is a well made dark comedy on Apple TV. I very much enjoyed the first seven episodes and I'm looking forward to watching the next episodes.

Bad Sisters is a female-centric story about five sisters and how they deal with their annoying, self-centered .... and controlling brother-in-law, John Paul (Claes Bang).

John Paul doesn't miss any opportunity to humiliate and to control his wife.

His arrogant behavior with others makes him very unpopular, to say the least. That's why the sisters decide to do something about it!

Well made. Brilliantly cast. Excellent script. Well done the whole crew.

Great TV series, strongly recommended.

Good, but too long to keep your attention
mateakocovska2 February 2023
The show is good. It has an interesting premise, great performances and good writing.

My only problem is... it's too long.

The pacing is all over the place. The first 3 episodes managed to capture my attention in full but after a while, it was meaningless as I knew none of the stunts pulled was going to be the one that killed JP. So there was no suspense for me anymore. And I ended up skipping a couple of episodes just to get to the end.

And speaking of JP, we understood he was a bad guy from the first 4 episodes. Everything after that was overkill and made him seem fake in my opinion. He was just in your face bad.

So in short the premise captured my attention but didn't manage to keep it in full.

Finally A Dark Comedy!
eliaexmusic18 September 2022
Ok folks, this is dark comedy at it's finest! They are doing such a great job with character development, storytelling and plot lines! I am so impressed with the writing of this show, the acting and the overall tone. These sisters have been bonded by their hatred of their brother in law, JP. He is quite despicable and Honestly I never thought I could hate someone so much. The writers of this show are doing a great job! JP needs to die...and I can't wait to see how all of this goes down as I wait each Friday morning for the next episode. If you like to laugh and cry then I would say... Watch this show!!!

More Meh Mummy
bernardff-938-29727027 September 2022
Like so much content on streaming, pod and video ,this was suffered from being stretched and padded out.

Eight and a half hours of series could have been a superior 2 hour movie.

And its time producers are on notice :that the constant time jumping reversing trick is a give away that you don't have the substance, creativity to run sequential. Its like the emperors clothes:post modern excrement.

I'm a fan of Sharon Horgan's writing and performing but in this tale she was surrounded by stereotypical characters ; each of her sisters occupying a particular emblematic niche of current feminine function.

And ,if nothing else the character of Thomas Claffin would have destroyed the fun for me .In a script with integrity ,when the character approached them with intrusive questions, any of the sisters would have said :"**** off".

For me, the whole thing a near miss. Greedy Streamers!

Could have been so good but...
robertjwcourtney21 November 2023
Bad Sisters looses the plot with too many incredible twists. Shame because every other element stacked up. Lt's a shame because it started so well and the story was near perfect for the first 3-4 episodes. But spinning this out over 11 episodes was seriously stretching it too far. The acting is incredible though and the sisters pull off a near perfect act - as does the actor playing the vile character of Jean-Pierre. Direction is also first class. I can only assume the commissioning channel insisted on a 10+ episode and the production company gave in to that demand. Such a shame because I'm sure many viewers gave up as it dragged on.
