American Fiction (2023)
"American Fiction" is an excellent comedy drama
If you like comedy dramas and care about social issues, you'll love 'American Fiction.' This Oscar-nominated film mixes humor, drama, and satire to challenge societal expectations. The story follows a colored author who, decides to make fun of being labeled as an Afro-American writer.
"American Fiction", available on Prime Video, follows a Black author who is tired of being stereotyped. As a joke and without having high expectations, he decides to write a fake novel that plays into racial clichés in order to make a point. But to his surprise, the book becomes a real hit! While it brings him financial success, it also forces him to confront the compromise of his artistic integrity.
"American Fiction" is an insightful look at how the environment you live in and the "market" can limit and label people...and in some cases, how easy it is for society to offer superficial solutions to complex problems like racism. Through the protagonist's journey, the film explores themes of identity, commercialism, and true social responsibility. So get ready to be entertained and maybe have your mind challenged!
Unorthodox (2020)
Individualism in Contrast to Collectivism
It might be too late to review this show, but I'll do it anyway. Netflix mini series' "Unorthodox", is a very moving story based on, or more precisely inspired by, a bestseller autobiography by Deborah Feldman. The film/book is about the escape of a young woman from a very orthodox religious and closed community to freedom. It is a journey from collectivism to individualism, where individual rights matter. This is also a journey from Williamsburg, New York to Berlin. Even if the story is happening in a Jewish community but the happenings within the story line are universally understood. It is also worth mentioning that the writer, director and producers are all women.
The Kominsky Method (2018)
A remarkable balance between comedy and drama
I just finished "The Kominsky Method". Honest, charming, sad and so FUNNY at the same time. A realistic and refreshing entertainment. Lovely storyline and good acting.
The Kominsky Method is a comedy-drama series that follows the lives of Sandy Kominsky, Michael Douglas, an aging acting coach, and his best friend Norman Newlander, Alan Arkin, a widowed agent. It is about friendship, aging, death, and love. The show is an engaging and remarkable balance between comedy and drama!
This is one of my favorite comedy series. (If you are over 50-60, you will enjoy this show even more.
It has three seasons and 22 episodes.
Godfather of Harlem (2019)
Highly engaging and captivating crime and historical drama
The Godfather of Harlem is a very engaging, captivating crime and historical drama series in three seasons. It has an interesting storyline, and the characters are based on real-life individuals; the story is inspired by real events and people set in the USA in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It combines historical events with fictional elements.
Even though it's a crime story with Bumpy Johnson, the infamous crime boss, at the center of the plot, it successfully captures the atmosphere of the late '60s, covering themes such as crime, drug trafficking, racism, anti-racism activism, and even touches on socio-political conditions in the USA.
That's why we see a diversity of characters in this series: real mob figures like Bumpy Johnson and Chin Gigante, influential figures such as Senator Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Malcolm X, Elijah Muhammad (Nation of Islam), and Muhammad Ali, the boxer. The fact that these individuals fight against injustice, let's say racism in this context, in their unique ways, adds different angles to the film, making it even more interesting and captivating.
The Great Hack (2019)
How easy it is to hack and manipulate...
Do you want to watch an interesting documentary about how data collected by and from social media sites is used to manipulate people's minds and behavior? Then I recommend
"The Great Hack"!
Having access to the collected data, makes it easy for firms like Cambridge Analytica to influence a large group of people to vote against their own interests. Guess where this amount of collected data comes from?
On top of that now we have learned even more about AI and its abilities: both its threats and opportunities. It is now even easier to manipulate people's minds and choices. You can easily fake images, voices, and video clips.
Extraction 2 (2023)
Just action, nothing more
I watched Extraction 2, which seems to be Netflix name for a new action series. If you like action and more action, and the quality of the plot does not matter, if you like explosions, helicopter, train and car chases... killing and more killing, you will probably like this movie.
It reminded me, more or less John Wick movies but not as colorful as them.
I generally do enjoy watching action films but I also expect some quality, a good script...
To be honest, it was not really to my liking. I expected something more, even from an action film.
I expect a higher level of quality or elements beyond just action.
Bad Sisters (2022)
Bad sisters is a well made dark comedy
Bad sisters is a well made dark comedy on Apple TV. I very much enjoyed the first seven episodes and I'm looking forward to watching the next episodes.
Bad Sisters is a female-centric story about five sisters and how they deal with their annoying, self-centered .... and controlling brother-in-law, John Paul (Claes Bang).
John Paul doesn't miss any opportunity to humiliate and to control his wife.
His arrogant behavior with others makes him very unpopular, to say the least. That's why the sisters decide to do something about it!
Well made. Brilliantly cast. Excellent script. Well done the whole crew.
Great TV series, strongly recommended.

The Diplomat (2023)
Accurate political drama with comedy context
"The Diplomat" is a new Netflix, political drama, which is really funny too, TV show , in 8 episodes. If you have seen and enjoyed "The West Wing", you will enjoy The diplomat too.
If you liked Keri Rusel in "The Americans" you will like her here even more.
The plot is very timely and relevant to current political issues around the US, England, Iran and Russia.
A British ship is attacked somewhere in the Middle East, the first evidence points to Iran, but...
Good cast, good, accurate and reasonable plot and well made movie.
In order to fully follow and enjoy the film you need to follow the dialogues, and not just the "actions". And this requires more concentration.
So if you enjoy watching TV series, if you like political drama with comedy context, you will certainly enjoy "The Diplomat".
