Go in with low expectations, and you'll be good
ConchordsCanFly15 September 2022
After checking the rating, I was I initially turned off by it (anything under 6 on IMDB is questionable) and just skipped over the show. After a night of not being sure what to watch, I thought I would give it a go. Again, with the low rating, my expectations were rather low as well. It surprisingly entertained me and kept me interested. I personally like that they showed less of the actual cult, as those scenes were the worst in my own opinion, but I could see how going into the show based on the synopsis alone would set your hopes high. Go in with an expectation that matches the rating, and you'll be pleasantly surprised and have you a decent show to get through.

It's like a lifetime film with a budget!
lisajoann883 September 2022
It definitely wasn't what I was expecting from the trailer- it's definitely like a lifetime movie that's been dragged out to 8 episodes with a high budget! Now, I'm not saying that's a bad thing in the slightest, but you have to know what you're letting yourself in for! It's cheesy, overly dramatic at times but it's definitely entertaining! It probably could have been cut down to 5 episodes and would have been slightly better! It reminds me of the Apple TV show servant with regards to the cult aspect! Had the same sort of ominous vibe- just wasn't as well done. I can't complain, kept me entertained all evening!

Give it a go- see what you think!!

Borderline Teen Drama But Worth Watching
quartermile502 September 2022
The battle between good and evil often comes down to each person's perception. Experiencing abuse can have unpredictable results on those perceptions. Perceptions form our reality regardless of their accuracy. The characters in this series have their own personal demons to try and manage while dealing with a looming threat brought about by a stranger entering their life with a significantly dark past.

Based on what's been produced on Netflix lately, this show is actually pretty decent. It's not some super-deep writing masterpiece that's bound for glory, but it's worth watching if you're looking for something different.

Never gets beyond mediocre
james_burrill5 September 2022
It's hard to say exactly where this series goes wrong. Either durable to direction, acting or production. The premise should be one to grab your attention but it never seems to do that. The series fails to create any real sense of suspense or tension. Episodes just mosey along at their own pace. It relies heavily on the sound track to build tension but eventually it has the opposite effect of simply being annoying. Despite having some excellent actors the characters seem wooden and stiff. Half the time they seem to be whispering orspeaking in softer tones than the scenes demand. The sets often seem too bright and cheery for the dramatic tension they're trying to build. Overall the entire series feels as if someone described what an occult thriller is to hallmark movies.

Go in with no expectations
bianca-423-520024 September 2022
I think all the 1-4 Star reviews are a bit severe - perhaps by people who loved the book and expected something different. Don't get me wrong, this is no masterpiece, but it's a fun series that doesn't require much thought. I think the problem is that it was a bit too watered down, not enough horror, not enough thriller so often, it just meanders through - but still entertaining. Give it a try and don't pay so much mind to the 1-4 star reviews, clearly those people have never watched Sharknado which is actually deserving of 1-4 Stars. Bottom line, it's a Netflix original, it's only ever going to be that good.

Started strong but only got weaker...
jkanecoleman6 September 2022
Devil in Ohio was a show I watched on a whim. It sounded interesting and I do enjoy supernatural shows and true crime shows. It starts off strong enough with a fairly open story about a girl who escaped a cult and made it to a near by hospital. From there the first few episodes do a descent job at setting up what could be a really great and interesting pay off. The problem is, that pay off never comes. Instead the characters flatten out, become awful versions of their initial appearance and make flat out stupid choices that will leave you thinking the last half of this show was either not finished when shooting or written by some different from the first half. To top it off, the ending is underwhelming to a level that made me regret giving this show time in the first place.

It's not that bad
katiesimpson10 September 2022
I think the bad reviews are too harsh. I enjoyed this show and though it was unique. It did a decent job of weaving a wide range of complex psychosocial themes through the characters in a way that made each of them relatable and interesting at last once throughout the show. I particularly enjoyed not being able to get a handle on the true motives of one of the main characters, and changing my mind about her constantly.

True, it wasn't a masterpiece and there were predictable, tired tropes. Pacing was a bit off at times in terms of plot and character development, and there was some lazy writing around key events. Overall, I am still glad I watched it and would recommend it to people who are intrigued.

A cult of idiocy
mark-deckard-19675 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Well theres plenty to criticize and the other reveiws do it well.

So I'm going to use my space to talk about the last episode.

It was full of illogical nonsense.

Mom takes off to go chase the cult and when dad finds out he does what? He gets the girls to a safe location to spend the night and not so much as tries to call the police or try to call his wife. Instead he takes care of some paperwork. OMG.

The cult gets away scott free even though police were on site and they burned a woman alive. No cops were called in as backup by the detective?

Then when he finally gets a search warrant, the cult is long gone...but hey, he gets thier dog.

The mom actually leaves her family to raise the psycho cult girl because she is more interested in nursing her own issues than keeping her family. Then she finds out she has been trapped by the cult girl and cant escape the relationship...I guess...the end.

So utterly stupid.

Slow
sonila-1623530 September 2022
The girl playing Mae plays her role well. You are never sure if she is good or bad. Suzanne is a good character too. Man playing cop is also okay. But the rest of them are plain boring. The show could have benefited from a fast pace and more twists and turns. Its watchable but not exceptional. Definitely not binge worthy. Took me a while to get through all episodes.

And why they had to insert a lesbian character and an asian character and a gay best friend? Seemed force and an unnecessary effort for showing diversity which adds no value to the actual story.

The cult and its story is also kinda meh.

The show is just good enough for a one time watch when there's nothin else.

Devilish doings with good folk songs
Pairic6 September 2022
Devil in Ohio: A community of Devil worshipers control a county in Ohio and a teen girl Mae, (Madeline Arthur) escapes from them. She has a pentagram carved into her back. This is no lazy caricature of Wicca or other Pagan beliefs though, they worship the Morning Star in their anti-Bible is The Book Of Caleb, their first Prophet. Their rituals are cleverly imagined rather than hackneyed, they do however have a predilection for human sacrifice in extreme circumstances and setting fires to get back at their enemies. These devilish hotheads have a reach beyond their own County by bribing police and other officials. The series has some great folk music with lyrics praising the Morning Star. Through flashbacks we learn not just the young runaways story but also the history of the Satanic Sect, these interludes inform rather than disrupt the narrative. The main story line relates to the psychiatrist, Dr Mathis (Emily Deschanel) and her family who foster Mae and the trouble this causes for them. Gerardo Celasco is Detective Lopez who helps Mathis to investigate the mystery. Some scenes of outright horror but the terror is mostly psychological as an aura of dread and threat builds. Some interesting Scarecrows; one with a pigs head; the other with a head that turns. It also fulfills an old Halloween Urban Legend. Created by Daria Polatin based on Polatin's book of the same name. Eight episodes on Netflix. 8/10.

YA novel adaptation
norkomorko2 September 2022
I think Netflix marketing messed this up; the book it's based on is a very melodramatic YA novel about a self-obsessed "misunderstood" 15-year-old girl. The material is a very silly idiot plot. Netflix, by centering Emily Deschanel, has framed this as an adult horror story, and it just isn't. So people are furious at all the teen drama. But, well, it is a teen drama.

The script aligns with that context; people exclusively make stupid decisions. In the book, Mom and Dad's dysfunction was understandable through the lens of their teen girl child. When the adults are the main characters, it doesn't work. Dad refuses to consider an offer on his debt-hole property because his wife suggests the person? Psychiatrist Mom can't possibly at all be qualified, the way she acts.

The book is mediocre teen drama, fairly faithfully adapted. The perspective is off, and the marketing matches.

Not bad viewing for a silly light horror mystery. As a teen series, it's pretty good! Very few scary or gory bits (like, one jump scare? A photograph or two of a cut on the cult girl's back?).

Teen drama, not horror
ayameofazuma7 September 2022
This show is not thriller or horror; it's more of a teen drama. If I knew that going in, I wouldn't have bothered. By episode 3 I was ready to turn it off because still nothing has happened. They try to make Mae out to be so evil, but she doesn't really even do anything wrong, she's just kind of awkward seeing how she was raised brainwashed in a cult. She stole a photo and a t-shirt, oh no! Cue the suspenseful music! They keep on playing the suspenseful music, but nothing suspenseful even happens to match it. They lead you to believe she poisoned someone, but literally nothing comes of it. Later she does do some "wrong" things, but it's just typical teen drama stuff, still not evil stuff. I almost gave this a 5 for trying, but it did nothing but waste my time, especially after the lame finale. Netflix keeps canceling good shows that do well to make room for new garbage like this. Why??

It's Better Than Its Current Rating
jenniferkaydavenport4 September 2022
This is a solid 7 show. Not the best thing you'll ever watch but far from the worst! I don't agree with the low reviews, and they are pulling the overall rating so much lower than it should be. I'm solidly entertained! It's perfect for a rainy, boring day when you want to watch something mindless but interesting.

I think this is actually the first review I've ever written. It just seems like a bummer that all of the 1 and 2 star reviews are going to pull it down so low that nobody wants to watch it. I'm glad I watched the first two episodes before looking it up because otherwise I probably would have passed on it. I would recommend giving it a chance if you want something easy watching.

Decent mini series
burgerman932 September 2022
I am half way done through the series, was amazed to like this storyline. Satanic/cult content is tough subject matter that hasn't always appealed to me. The episodes are quite thrilling and the actors and sound effects are spot on. While the show is sort of a mix of a teen drama and crime drama, it somehow works for me. This show probably won't reach a mass audience, but it's worth trying out.

One downside is that the story gets a bit segmented at times, and some of the high school scenes are a bit over dramatized. And perhaps Deschanel isn't the most interesting actress, but she worked hard on this one.

No Horror, Not a Thriller
chad-613134 September 2022
This series is a drama at best. The title of the series is deceiving, just like the Devil himself. But he definitely wasn't in Ohio. Like other viewers have stated, it does start of intriguing, but that does not last for long. You will begin to feel like you're watching a LifeTime movie. The whole cult storyline was rather lame. I mean, if I was in an actual cult and watched this series I would be offended. I really had my fingers crossed that just maybe, maybe, this series would be worth the watch, but for me, it fell short. I couldn't connect with any of the characters especially the parents. And the actors playing the high school kids looked like they were left back for 5 years. I got bored way to quick but did watch it to the end, fast forwarding through the unnecessary parts that made me want to stick forks in my eyes.

It's worth a watch...
Joeihannah14 September 2022
Is it the best limited series ever? No. Will it keep you intrigued to finish it? Yes.

It really isn't a bad watch. I will say it starts strong and then kind of has a lot of filler moments to push it to the 8 episodes it consists of, but I will say it did enough to keep coming back for that next episode and that's what matters.

I think the 1-3 star reviews are harsh. I don't know what they were expecting? I went in knowing exactly what this show was going to bring to the table. I also noticed a lot of those harsh reviews are from people who rarely ever give anything above a 5.

I can't give this a 6.5 which I believe is the fairest score, but I rounded up, because I felt a 7 was more of a fair score to counteract the bad ones.

If you enjoy who done it, shows with a twist this is right up your alley.

Devil in the details
gurumaggie3 September 2022
Standard hallmark, 5pm on a Friday but stretched out over 8 agonising episodes.

This milquetoast by the numbers snoozefest has more plot holes than a Swiss cheese factory.

Cookie cutter one dimensional characters move achingly slowly towards a vanilla climax of arse numbingly dull proportions. The tweens utter lines like they are being forced to say them or they've been generated by A. I. that hadn't met a human before.

If you watch this do horror shots bingo every cliché or tired old trope shots, it will ease your pain. I watched this so you don't have to dear reader.

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone ever, watch Halloween or something actually scary.

Carrie neighborhood
SnoopyStyle24 September 2022
Mae (Madeleine Arthur) escapes from a reclusive farming community in Ohio. Hospital psychiatrist Dr. Suzanne Mathis (Emily Deschanel) starts working with her. She moves in with the Mathis family. Suzanne and her husband Peter Mathis (Sam Jaeger) have three daughters. Helen (Alisha Newton) is the popular oldest daughter. Middle child Jules (Xaria Dotson) becomes Mae's best friend. Dani is the adopted youngest daughter. Detective Lopez (Gerardo Celasco) investigates Mae and her mysterious community.

This is an 8-part limited Netflix series. There are lots of references to Carrie. I wouldn't mind borrowing one more thing from Carrie. This needs a bit of supernatural injected into its story. I like the crows, but the show stops short. I was expecting the fire to go off at the dance. The Carrie vibe is strong in this show, but it always pulls back from that. There is an intriguing twist reveal at the end. That could be done earlier, and have it do something more. As it stands, it's a cliffhanger that is unlikely to go anywhere. I doubt that we're having a second season. I've never read the book. Maybe there is more to the story and it's planning to continue.

Written by a robot?
mysafetyemonline3 September 2022
Standard--yawn-- plot.

Girl running, busy looking back vs ahead, falls (why do the writers ALWAYS have them look back and then fall/mostly the girls)?

Lovely dr who has obvious marks from ...guessing ...identical trauma (yawn).

Husband makes a dumb business decision and no legal protection...yawn.

Tries to tell wife but she interrupts and spews compliments (hundreds of scenes like this...in hundreds of boring movies) then asks him what he was going to say. Hundreds of identical scenes in shows.

School scene where one sis doesn't help the other sis (sure...).

All fake, been there done that writing.

Worth a watch
PoppyMills16 September 2022
People are so miserable, they just like joining on the bandwagon hating on Netflix .

Yes it wasn't the best thing ever created but it certainly doesn't deserve all the rubbish reviews, I didn't look at the reviews before I watched it because of that reason , I know they are always going to be shocking no matter what it is .

I thought this was enjoyable and binge watched it in one day , and when it finished I was already hoping for a second series to see we're the story goes , it was easy watching with a good story .

I do agree though with it not being a horror or not really a thriller . Can't really put it in a genre I suppose lol . But still a good watch I reckon.

Not as bad as reviews make it sound
RandomTard11 February 2023
Of course there are problems with the show, just like any show. But I was entertained and I'm not the easiest to please. There are some illogical actions by the characters and some problems about how police would work in a situation but what show doesn't?

What really surprised me happily, was the lack of any superactiony criminal stupidity - no one got shot with a rocket launcher, there was no huge firefights between police and the villains. It was subtle.

Acting was good enough, it looked good and the musics were pretty good. It's not a horror show, there's no supernatural monsters or stupid jumpscares.

It's mildly entertaining and incredibly frustrating
caseypthompson4 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
If an actual girl is found on the road side and injured with cult scars on her back and tie scars around her wrists and is obviously traumatized...doctors, the police and psychiatrists in 'real life' would take the case extremely seriously. But that's the problem, no one in the show seems to take the situation seriously. First, they would have not kicked her out of the hospital so soon and been so annoyed and careless with trying to find her a home. Nothing feels credible - the acting, the way people respond to things, etc.

Suzanne should obviously know she's being stalked by an evil cult, especially after finding the note in her mailbox...but no, she just brushes it off.

The sisters and their friends are fake and the acting is atrocious. Nothing makes sense. No one is acting how they would be acting if this were a real life scenario. It's extremely frustrating to watch people just be so ignorant and dumb.

But is it entertaining to watch? I mean, I guess.

But does it make it good? No.

It's actually really awful and I hate to see Bones (Emily Deschanel) in a role where she just acts like a spaced-out dimwit. Everyone is completely apathetic and are delusional idiots. Why is everyone so clueless, unaware and/or mean? Why is the best friend of Jules so jealous and rude when it comes to a poor traumatized and victimized girl? Why is her older sister such an entitled brat that also has zero concerns for a traumatized human being?

Why do people just not seem concerned? Suzanne, the mother, seems to care but then completely plays ditzy and dumb 80% of the time.

And the dad/husband is just in his own selfish little world without a single ounce of empathy for the scarred traumatized girl living in his home.

There just aren't any real human reactions and emotions in the show so it feels incredibly hokey and fake.

Entertaining suspense/ drama based on YA novel
Tasha_Cambridge4 September 2022
I went in with zero expectations, and perhaps that's why I enjoyed the suspense mini-series Devil in Ohio more than others did. It's based on a YA novel about a girl who escapes a cult (not a spoiler- it's literally in the description) and a doctor who becomes over-involved and takes her in.

The story of Devil in Ohio is interesting, particularly if you have a fascination with cults. The acting is good, and while the themes aren't deep, many of the challenges faced by the characters are relatable. Who among us hasn't gotten obsessed with something or someone because of events in our past that we have yet to fully process? Haven't we all resented or suspected a sibling or friend and felt guilty for it? Doesn't everyone try to separate from aspects of our family or background that keep resurfacing in our lives or replicating in our own behavior?

Few caveats: If you are seeking a mature horror flick, heart-pounding thriller, deeply written characters or a complex mystery with unexpected plot twists- this ain't it. If you're interested in cults or looking for a series with broad appeal, give Devil in Ohio a shot. It's difficult to find much to watch that both adults & young girls can enjoy. I was glad this series was released so my cousins and our nieces could watch. Most of our family enjoyed it, but it's not for very young kids who get scared by suspenseful stories.

Good acting
fandanne-766-13365715 September 2022
I like the setting and the ambiance. The sound team also did a good job setting the mood.

But I would not call this a horror or thriller. This is more of a drama mystery.

There's a lot of symbolisms in this production and for someone who is into conspiracy and religious cults I found this interesting. It's very subtle, and I'm not certain if they're supposed to be of much note yet, but so far I'm on episode 4 and it's keeping me interested.

Understand that cults like this do exist and can live very isolated from the rest of society and I feel they captured that in this depiction of a religious cult.
