The Five Juanas
Tweekums3 November 2021
This Mexican series, a remake of a Colombian show, opens with five women having a rather surprising meeting at a resort in Cancun. Each of them is named Juana and each of them has an identical birthmark on their backside! They soon learn that they have the same father but different mothers. The more they learn about their father, a powerful politician expecting a major promotion the more they determine to take revenge for how he threated their mothers. Along the way they will face many difficulties and some real danger.

It must be stated that this series is based on an unlikely coincidence but if you can get past that and don't mind plenty of melodrama it is rather fun. The five Juanas of the title are suitably different in character; one is a trainee nun another is a stripper for example! The other characters are interesting; some appear good, some are good and some are obvious villains; as one might expect from such a story. If you want lots of action you may be disappointed but there is often a sense of threat; sometimes the danger is physical other times reputational. The villains of the story are suitably wicked, even if it isn't always immediately obvious. There is a fair amount of sex and nudity although for the most part not too much is visible; just the occasional backside or glimpse of a breast. Overall I thought it was a fairly entertaining series; perhaps not a must see but still fun enough for me to be glad I chose to watch it.

These comments are based on watching the series in Spanish with English subtitles.

Did I say sexy? Yes, finally a sexy show on Netflix that actually has a good story and writing! And the acting's fair as well.

I enjoyed it. Worth a watch for sure.

Bingeworthy drama about five Juanas.
helenfredriksson18 October 2021
The first four or five episodes may be hard to go through, it took me two times to watch, but when it got interesting I couldn't stop watching. If you want a logical, totally correct show that would be an exact to real life, move on to another show. This web of sisters, lovers, relatives is not that.

All descendents of a conspiring man, have not just an identical birthmark, but it is also located at the same place on the body. Five women with it, half-sisters by the name Juana, are the leading roles in this mystery.

The show have a little bit of everything, a bit of paranormal, incest, transition, family ties, sex (not too much and not showing too much either), gay, love, evil, trust (or distrust), trafficking and a million other things.

The plot unravels really well and it's not hard to follow the creators vision. Intriguing drama of five sisters bonding not only by the same father.

Predictable and easy watch

Warning: Spoilers
I like Spanish shows for their thrill, the language and good looking people. Few things about this show: Why are all these women constantly getting harassed and assaulted???

I kept watching because I liked Manny.

Even though it made no ducking sense she didn't put up a fight when getting assaulted. It does not fit her character at all. The guy wasn't managing her anymore. She could have slammed a bottle to his head. At the very least kicked him or slapped him.

A remake of a Colombian telenovela, La Juanas (1997) originally written by Bernardo Romero Pereira. Modern high quality cinematography in Dolby Vision HDR. Setting in Mexico. Lots of eye candy.

Worth watching series with good storyline and full of suspense & thrill moments it gives in every episode. It's totally a different one as compare to other thriller ones. It has unique story unique characters and a unique villain. Cast are damn good if this series so perfectly acted by all the members of the cast. If you are looking for something different just give it a try to this series. I know it's long but it won't disappoint you....

I really liked it! Worth watching!
MARBLELEMON9 October 2021
I watched this on Netflix and it was really intriguing. The storyline was different to what I've ever watched before. If you like drama and mystery, this is def a watch!

One thing, which is not a spoiler. If you decide to watch this, even though it's season 1 of 19 episodes, it seems to be two seasons. After episode 9, you'll know what I mean.

Interesting puzzle
fab8826 January 2023
Good series and exciting mysteries or should I say puzzles to solve. The first half of the series I really liked and the mystery keeps you interested.

In the second part it seemed like everyone lost their braincells. What happened? Did they switch writers? It gets a little boring and very frustrating because everyone seems so naive and the decisons make zero sense. It gets good in the end again.

It's worth watching if you can endure the stupdity in a couple episodes you'll enjoy it even more. Beautiful actors and nice pace of the series. You'll grow to like some characters.

7.5 for season one. Would have been 8 if it wouldn't have changed so much in the middle of the series.

Lovely cast

Warning: Spoilers
I love the acting! The story is fun and interesting, not too believable but very entertaining.

I love the diversity they used in the actors, definitely showing some the different faces of Mexican people.

Love the inclusion of a trans character.

The only thing why didn't they shaved Frederic,s face? He didn't strike as a "pijo"

This whole show is written poorly
hamnaazeem17 October 2021
There are mistakes in some scenes. Showing too much rape like it's normalizing it and the girls reaction to the rape in the series shows like its not a big deal. How will it affect other boys watching it? As we all know young boys do watch these things. Focused more on nudity, sex and Yes there are rape scenes in many other shows but this show was poorly directed. A typical spanish series that the whole story was predictable.

Would've been good if it wasn't predictable
alyj-7002113 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
SPOILERS

Like any other drama that has murder involved, there's always someone that coincidentally knows a detective ?? I don't understand how that concept hasn't been worn out yet. This show is pretty predictable and very VERY uncomfortable and cringeworthy. I really do not like how this was produced and the whole brother likes sister thing is very...disturbing. There was so reason to show over and over their flashbacks of each other like WE GET IT! They're into each other but they're literal siblings. I really do not like incest being thrown in my face. Characters are also very basic with typical stereotypes. Of course the bisexual sister is seen as the "tough" one of the 5. They also have the IQ of somebody yelling "is anybody there?" When they think somebody's in their home. This show was so frustrating due to their lack of COMMON SENSE. I feel like this series would've been 10/12 episodes had the characters been realistic. Any time someone speaks on a situation 9/10 it'll happen in the next episode or scene. I've gotten to episode 15 and I'm not even sure if I should finish, I feel like I lost brain cells. Everyone's hot though I'll give them that. Acting was fine. But Spanish novelas tend to be more basic, so to each their own I guess.

So Many Beautiful People!
mlt2219314 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I like foreign series and Netflix suggested this for me. I've never watched a Mexican series and was sure it was going to be a novela which means somebody was going to end up in a coma. This show is far better than I thought it would be. The women are all gorgeous and that's usually an indication they have no talent. But, these young ladies can act! Even the men are all good looking! This was a great way to spend a few evenings binging. This is a very long series, but it seems like it could have been two seasons starting around episode 9.

Yes, there's sex, but it's not over the top and filmed discretely. This is definitely a female driven series and you can tell in the sex scenes where the women are active partners if not initiators. There are a few rape scenes, but the women get payback in the end. I wish Manny, as a bisexual had continued her relationship with the woman, but we know they always end up with the guy. Each woman had their own story to follow. I think the weakest story line may have been Matilde's, but that could have been that her singing was faked and the thing with Pacho just didn't work.

Here's what surprised me the most....we have a bi woman and nobody cares. We have a trans man and nobody cares. In Mexico! If that trans man was in the States, he'd be beaten, if not killed and his bar would be burned to the ground. Is Mexico that much more accepting?

Anyway....really good show. Bravo to all the actors for a great story.

I Liked the Story but The Acting was Average
Abdalwahab-9320 October 2021
This series has great story-telling and unique style but the acting was not good (expect Manu and Simon they were OK)

Its a little bit predictable but overall enjoyable to watch.

I liked the way they show Mexico (not like US series and movies) and I give it 6 out 10.

Too much sex, not enough action
jaymedaw13 October 2021
The plot is decent and interesting, however there is just way too much sex. Some is fine, but every 3-5 minutes in every episode there's explicit sex scenes. This is not a family friendly show, watch it when you're not around children or people whom don't enjoy excessive sex scenes. It's frustrating when writers do not take into account all of their audience. I'm writing this review for people like myself whom are very intellectual and sex just doesn't keep me interested 24/7. I started to lose interest after about 5 episodes. If you were to take out the sex scenes, you wouldn't have much of a series which is telling. I'm also not interested in the idea of half siblings having sex all the time after they've found out. It felt like they're trying to normalize incest and non monogamous lifestyles. I hope that if there's another season, they take into account everyones reviews.

Binge-worthy series
Waltram29 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This Mexican series really keeps you addicted from beginning to end. The actors and screenplay are really good, even if the story itself is not that believable, but well that's a TV show, not reality!

It all starts when five girls on holiday in Cancun find by chance that they have the same birthmark (very unlikely, but whatever) and are all named Juana. They do a DNA test to find out if there are related and later find out that they share a father that to have never met and who is now a high ranking politician.

The main drawback is that the cast is not very credible based on genetics. The father of the girls could pass as North Spanish, Irish or British. He has blue-green eyes. One of the girls, Juan Caridad, has dark brown eyes, even though her mother has blue eyes. If both parents have blue eyes the child can only have blue or light eyes. Juan Valentina looks Spanish or Italian, but her mother looks mestiza, which is also impossible genetically. Juana Bautista (played by Sofia Engberg) looks Egyptian, Arabic or Jewish, and couldn't be related to the others based on looks. But the worst of all is that her mother in the series is presumably a Mexican Native American (with a tiny nose), which, apart from the skin color, does not match at all her phenotype. Why would the casting people do things like this?

Entertaining enough

Entertaining enough if you're not looking for anything too deep. Don't expect too much, then you won't be disappointed. And the girls are beautiful, so there's that.

Wonderfully done, a clever 'who did it' and such an anthem to strong women. Delicious acting and so many unfolding moments of genuine joy despite some of the dark themes.

Nice storyline - too much sex in later episodes
pjlooijen11 December 2021
Nice storyline and good to underscore the issue many women face in abuse and worse. In later episodes everyone has sex with almost everybody - this is a bit too much and doesn't add to the plot. To make clear that two people like each other it is not necessary to spend minutes of them naked enjoying themselves every time.

The Five Juanas: A Multifaceted Tale of Women, Identity, and Unity
joyrubayet31 January 2024
The Five Juanas" is a captivating series that weaves a rich tapestry of narratives, focusing on five distinct women, each named Juana. This unique premise serves as the foundation for a story that delves into the complexities of female identity, relationships, and the shared experiences that bind us together.

The strength of the series lies in its well-developed characters, each Juana portrayed with depth and authenticity by a talented ensemble cast. From the ambitious career woman to the free-spirited artist, the reserved homemaker to the rebellious activist, and the wise elder to the young dreamer - the diversity of personalities ensures that there's a Juana for every viewer to connect with.

The narrative unfolds through a skillful blend of flashbacks and present-day scenes, gradually revealing the interconnected lives of these five Juanas. The storytelling is both heartfelt and thought-provoking, touching on universal themes such as love, loss, empowerment, and the constant search for self-identity. The series brilliantly captures the essence of womanhood in all its complexities, breaking away from stereotypes to present a nuanced and inclusive portrayal.

The production values of "The Five Juanas" are commendable. The cinematography captures the essence of each Juana's world, and the soundtrack complements the emotional beats of the story. The series is not just visually engaging but also succeeds in creating a resonant atmosphere that draws viewers into the lives of these remarkable women.

One of the highlights of the show is its commitment to exploring social issues without becoming preachy. Each Juana's story serves as a lens through which the series addresses broader topics such as gender inequality, societal expectations, and the importance of solidarity among women. It manages to deliver a powerful message without compromising the individuality of each character's journey.

While the series occasionally treads familiar ground in its exploration of personal and societal struggles, it compensates with its authentic character portrayals and the chemistry between the cast members. The pacing is generally well-maintained, with each episode contributing to the overall narrative arc without unnecessary detours.

In conclusion, "The Five Juanas" is a compelling exploration of femininity, identity, and the shared bonds that connect us all. With its strong performances, nuanced storytelling, and a celebration of diversity, this series stands out as a commendable addition to the realm of character-driven dramas. Whether you're looking for relatable stories or a fresh perspective on the female experience, "The Five Juanas" offers a satisfying and enriching viewing experience.

This productions has no quality
malzarooni-9307316 October 2021
How naive is this production, people working on this show don't have mind set. I can't believe how could they produce such as naive show. How could you believe 5 girls have same birth mark on same spot, and they gathered in one location. So stupid.. this director never thought for a minute that we are living in 2021 and people understand a lot and know a lot. One thing just attacking people to watch this series, which is women feminist, showing their undies and beauties. Rather than that, it's a failure, and I must give credit to some actors performance. The director could discuss the men control and corruptions in much easy and realistic way.. I must rate this series to -4.

Very good
chexsmate20 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This show has it all: romance, murder, mystery, mayhem, etc. The voice over is decent as well. I do agree with other reviews, the incest thing was gross, unsettling and once they were caught on camera they acted like a normal couple and everyone seemed ok with it. I knew they'd end up not being brother and sister but they're still related. It was a sketchy subject to include. Other than that it was good, I would have rated it higher if they didn't include that story line. I hope they do a second season, it definitely left off with enough mystery for that.

too many plot holes
mpreci20 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Tried to enjoy this, stopped at episode 15. Don't get how sisters who slept with the same man, one married him, both have a child from him and have such an excellent sisterly relationship. Don't understand why the seer, can't see that her lover is going to try to harm her. Wanted to like this, but too many ridiculous plot holes. Like most mexican novelas the "girl gotta eat" trope is also present.

Worth Watching!
vishaljethva_21 December 2021
Well it's not just a story of 5 beautiful women but also includes women trafficking, money laundering and murders. One dialogue at the very end of the series "the real badasses aren't the ones who live at the top penthouses. It's those of us who live in the basement." concludes this series perfectly.
