Problematic
matthewofdunedin13 June 2022
Deception is rewarded and everything else in this film is vaguely incoherent and incomprehensible. At times the characters come across as if the screenwriter had never met a human.

Cast diversity is nice for pride month, just wish the film was better.

My Illogical Boyfriend
cahidi17 June 2022
I got intrigued when I read the synopsis. Creating a fake boyfriend to keep away a toxic one? That's interesting and potentially funny. And while it was pretty funny to see the reality of social media users portrayed in this film (dumb and quick to judge something or someone), but I still can stop myself from thinking that the story isn't acceptable or logical. In real life, you couldn't actually get away with creating an imaginary person, especially when it involves money. I'm not an expert in law, but I'm pretty sure it can be called fraud and it's illegal. So why did I give it a 6? Because it's not an amateur work and the comedy is still pretty good, not to mention that it's decently acted and has a good ending. I'm a sucker for good endings. So in my opinion, this movie is still good enough to watch.

CRINGE-TASTIC
adansantos15 June 2022
Every stereotype is here. The acting is so bad, you can tell they are only doing this for the paycheck, and the story is totally predictable.

You're not doing the lgbtq+ community any favours with this kind of garbage.

And as usual, the 10/10 "insurrectionists" are all out in force.

Ouch

This was a hard watch. Terrible acting by all apart from the hot chef. The whole thing exposed the superficialness of young people today. Everyone is insincere and fake. Lies are their currency. As is showing off. The main gig is in every gay show out there since coming out himself. I guess he ticks a few boxes just not mine.

Just Don't-
luismateomendoza13 June 2022
The plot in general is lousy, there is no common sense, it is all so unreal and dramatic in a simply absurd sense, the only good thing are the actors who participated, many have had an excellent career, and others who are not so well known did an excellent job but the film itself, and the organization everything was just horrible.

Funny RomCom
Hadytangible15 July 2022
This movie don't deserve the hate, it is a good lighthearted romantic comedy, lots of laughs, bromance, good acting and of course it is not realistic. I haven't watch a realistic romcom 🤔

Anyways, it is on prime video!

Low budget garbage
qui_j23 June 2022
This is a low budget Canadian movie that pulls together a bunch of bad actors. The script is childish, and the production at the level of a high school play. Why do people make garbage movies like this? More importantly, who funds this garbage!

Good laugh, although a bit cringeworthy
paulterrzz8 January 2023
So, I watched the movie because I like Keinan and Dylan. The movie's goofy, cringe and certainly interesting, but could be better with portraying stereotypically gay behaviour or actors (because queerness is always been used as punchline, butt of the joke, especially effeminate men)

You can't expect it to deliver logically, as there's a character that gets away with serious cyber crimes and not only that but gets rewarded lol. So, it's definitely comedy. But I likes the trio. And the storyline was also decent. Overall it's ok, considering it's a low budget independent film.

If you like goofy characters, friendships and anything young adult set in an urban landscape. You must watch it.

Do not watch
bobby-ducharme12 June 2022
Honestly don't waste your time on this movie. The good reviews are 1000% fake lol. Just hard to watch overall. Too cheesy. Too awkward. Too far from reality. No chemistry whatsoever between any cast member.

cute

Not going to win any awards but it's a sweet movie with some silly twists. Samer Salem and Keiynan Lonsdale were very believable in their meet-cute moment. Dylan Sprouse and Sarah Hyland were fun side characters.

Fun but very surface level
adamjefferson201018 October 2023
This movie has an entertaining storyline with characters who are a lot of fun to watch. Where it falls short for me is the lack of depth. We know that the two best friends, Andrew and Jake, are insecure and lacking confidence, but we never really learn why that is. And at the end when everything comes to a head, there's not really any self-reflection. The consequences come as a result hurting the people they cared about, but not really for lying to a ton of people. So for me, it was just missing that extra layer to have me invested in the characters. I feel like I didn't know much about them other than what was happening in their lives in that moment. Overall, the movie was entertaining enough, but it made no sort of impact on any level, at all.

Social Media Hyperdrive Torpedoes This Marginal Romcom
EUyeshima1 July 2023
I can't imagine anyone over the age of 24 enjoying this hyperactive 2022 roundelay. The first half-hour is a confusing melange of social media machinations and superficial interactions muddied further by the overuse of trendy lingo. It eventually settles down into a standard issue romcom where Andrew, a twenty-something stuntman, tries to end a no-win relationship with a shallow actor named Nico. Andrew's best friend Jake creates a completely fictitious new boyfriend named Cristiano to make Nico jealous but instead creates a viral sensation. Andrew falls in love with a chef named Rafi, and complications ensue. The movie improves marginally when it settles down into a more predictable pattern but not enough. Memorable as the hidden love interest in "Love, Simon", Keiynan Lonsdale is an appealing presence as Andrew but called upon here to act ridiculously at pivotal plot points. Except for Samer Salem as the idealized Rafi, the supporting cast merely deliver over-the-top turns including a post-"Modern Family" Sarah Hyland as Jake's girlfriend Kelly. You can tell I'm really not the target audience here.

Are these people in junior high?
adamsandel22 June 2022
Because they all behave like they are. It feels like someone crossed the script of an ABC After School Special with a Disney Channel movie, changed the lead character to a gay man and slapped it up on the streamer just in time for Pride month.

Shallow, boring...

...& a huge waste of time, both for viewers and everyone included in this production. Not even worth the 150 characters this review system requires by default.

Equality in rom coms
vandeman-scott22 January 2023
MY FAKE BOYFRIEND could be considered a step forward in representation for the LGBTQ+ community, but not in the way one would like it to be. It moves the needle of gay acceptance forward but only insofar as it's equal in every way to similar B-movie heterosexual romantic comedies. It's illogical, stupid AF, and filled with cute nitwits making terrible decisions you and I would never make, all in pursuit of ever elusive love. The fact that it never once self-consciously strains to justify its own existence somehow feels like progress, so two snaps up to the filmmakers on that front.

Populated with characters straight from stock, this film never gets too deep into anything meaningful, relying heavily on stereotypes of gay and straight folks alike to drive the action, and in so doing, it mimics a thousand other heteronormative rom coms I've seen ... and enjoyed.

Because when you get right down to it, that's what rom coms are: far fetched potboilers with improbable premises designed to pull emotional strings in spite of their overarching silliness. Why should it be different when the primary focus is on gay men?

Keiynan Lonsdale is as always pleasant and relies on his 1,000-watt smile to connect with the audience. He delivers a creditable, sympathetic performance that's light fare to be sure, plenty entertaining, and most important, relatable to anyone familiar with modern dating wars.

Dylan Sprouse serves up a small dash of nerdy straight-guy realness as he battles deep-seated insecurities and feelings of inadequacy that are oddly endearing. Still, he stays blessedly close to the surface and keeps things light, which seems absolutely right for this vehicle.

Only one character in MY FAKE BOYFRIEND raises a red flag. Leo, the borderline psychopath, is over the top, could leave a counterproductive impression for those hostile to the film's intent, and doesn't serve a purpose outside of an attempt at comic relief that falls flat. This is not to say that "gay crazy" isn't a phenomenon. We all know it is. Leo's presence, however, doesn't add value and is an exaggeration that comes off as cringey rather than funny.

To be clear, MY FAKE BOYFRIEND is not a great romantic comedy that's destined to be a classic. It's a flawed, middle-of-the-road yet reasonably competent fantasy meant to be enjoyed by a limited audience and its allies, and in that respect, it somewhat succeeds. In years past, it might have been hailed as groundbreaking in its normalization of gay relationships and its portrayal of their wider societal acceptance, but since that work has already largely been done, it has to stand on its merits as a romance alone. In that regard, it's average.

One reviewer said this movie made him embarrassed to be gay. I don't dismiss that reaction. In fact, I even understand it to a point, but I don't agree, mainly because I don't hold MY FAKE BOYFRIEND to a standard I wouldn't apply to similar films aimed at hetetosexual audiences.

MY FAKE BOYFRIEND delivers exactly what it promises: a screwball plot and cute guys screwing up their relationships while doing stupid cute-guy tricks, all tied up at the end with a predictably happy ending. Sometimes, that's all you need on a Saturday night.

Hummm
gab-6759913 June 2022
Ok so maybe I am bias because I love Sprouse. I have seen him in a few movies and I do not think he is a horrible actor, he was in The Curse of Turandot and After We Collided (which was by far his greatest role so far! Is his brother better, yes! This movie was cute though, in a cute kitten way. This movie was more for boy loves boy rom. I do not like to label ppl gay I find the word vulgar when some ppl say it so same sex love, for I myself and bi. Now I enjoy a really good rom/com but this one just fell short on the comedy. When I say short I mean almost none existent! Other then then a few falls and physical pain laughs. It was at least half good as far as original story lines go. Loved the girlfriend, she is a great actress and hot! I do not recommend this movie but if you like Indy films this was not bad, I have seen worse.

Another Clunker

Will Sarah Hyland ever make a decent movie? Probably not. This one improves after a dodgy opening 10 minutes and she's OK in it, just deserves better.

Just for fun
smck-649845 August 2023
I see where some of the reviews are coming from, but it's nothing to take too seriously. It has the cheesy romcom formula we're all familiar with, and it adds in current topics to be relevant. We've all seen social media's upsides and downsides, and this might just be another friendly reminder to take things with a grain of salt - perhaps be a little more real. It's young and silly and what a romcom should be (to me anyway). It's easily digestible, maybe a little awkward at times, but nothing too real or serious. Pretty standard romcom, right? Put it on for an easy watch with some quick laughs, cringe, and cute ending.

Trash, trash, trash!
nebraskatim26 June 2022
Films often rely on its premise. This one is utter trash from the very first scene. Human beings need to start a self examination and throttle their immoral behaviors, starting with the tampering of pride when committing it!

Genuine laughs
gnkelly-9732216 April 2023
I stumbled on this by accident and would have been tempted to skip with all the negative reviews. But I know Lonsdale from his small roles in Love Simon and Love Victor where he was good so gave it a shot. I think the negative reviews are nothing to do with honest reviews of a comedy film.

This was a genuinely silly and funny film. The characters were all so OTT and ridiculous. That was the point! It's not bad acting, it's brilliant acting.

I initially thought we might be heading for a bad Weird Science rip off when Sprouse announced he was going to create a boyfriend but the social media twist was clever and had some serious undertones if you want to look for any depth.

The biggest point that the haters seem to have missed is that this film was funny. I was laughing all the way through and when so many comedies fail on that simple point I give it the credit it is due.

I look forward to seeing Lonsdale front and centre in more movies. Keep it up young man and ignore the negativity. It's a thumbs up from me!

Kitschy and full of clichés - but still
Waedliman26 October 2023
I'm an "old white man" and every now and then I just still need to believe that beautiful men are also just looking for true love. This film confirms that and in the gloomy here and now, where environmental groups are suddenly waffling about the evil Israelis and one European country invades another just like that and even finds friends in the world, I just need some positive impulses, even if they are not necessarily believable. What works best for me in this film is the chemistry between Andrew and Rafi. Both are incredibly likeable, even if Andrew naturally strays from the good path. But we forgive him for that, of course, as well as Rafi, who not only has a dazzling actor in Samer Salem, but also an irresistibly charming and attractive guy who I want to see more of - you get the idea. Yes, "My Fake Boyfriend" is not a cinematic pearl, but it is certainly good for an enjoyable 100 minutes, where it is clear from the start that it will end well.

Ugh 🤕
robert756726 June 2022
At long last, the queer community is being represented in rom-coms. Sadly, this was a very difficult viewing experience. The acting felt amateurish which was shockingly disappointing since these actors are professionals. The lines felt forced. And let's be honest, in the gay community, I don't see a muscled bound Mary falling for a scrawny self defense teacher (why didn't they flip the roles???). That may be harsh but it's the reality.

And let's not talk about the jail time for the massive defrauding monetary schemes. Honestly, is this is the best creative minds can peddle?

Makes me embarrassed to be gay
edwhilt21 August 2022
Who wrote this monstrosity? This is gay culture at its most superficial. Only watch this movie if you are a majority culture gay who hates anyone over 175 lbs or with skin darker than a paper bag.

How did this get Greenlit?
pierce-mn12 December 2022
The script is terrible and is basically a lot of nothing. The acting is mediocre at best, although when the men are in states of undress, they bring some interest to it, but is one of the most unbelievably ridiculous and pointless movies I have ever seen! The actors try but without anything to play, there's not a real commitment to this. There are far more interesting gay romantic comedies out there that aren't a waste of time! I wish there was something to recommend this, but there really isn't. Even Dylan Sprouse can't breathe life into this wooden script. Not even the sets and backdrops are good!
