Tired and predictable despite a good cast
supermellowcali8 October 2022
While this movie has good overall production and actors, the script is too weak to deliver anything but bland scenes we've seen before and humor written by an elderly producer that has "always worked," which of course makes it drum-roll unfunny in 2022. The story is the same as always too, beginning with the Odd Couple scenario, but less funny, moving on to the Bad Boys routine, but tame and mundane, then finally the CW version of character growth ("I realize now I only wanted to be with ____ because I _____") offering nothing new. Even Mr. Dogg's appearance didn't save this trite muck, so I'd definitely avoid this movie if you have a life.

A depressing comedic sign of the times
stevelivesey6720 December 2022
What happens when you get a gay guy, a black guy, a brown guy and a typical millennial beta wimp all together (no really, this wishful diversity party actually exists in Hollywood and precisely nowhere else in the world) and make a movie based on stereotypes with no real evident talent in the writing, character or plot department.

In fairness, the black guy is quite funny on occasion but clearly he only gets work because Kevin Hart is too expensive these days.

So we are left with a gross out comedy in the style of the Farrelly brothers, but without the talent.

Today's review was brought to you by the word : implausible.

Barely Funny

Warning: Spoilers
I saw Bromates, starring Josh Brener-What Men Want, The Internship; Lil Rel Howery-Free Guy, Rel_tv; Jessica Lowe-Wrecked_tv, Blended; Asif Ali-WandaVision_tv, Wrecked_tv and Brendan Scannell-Bonding_tv, Heathers_tv.

This is a comedy that is barely funny. The cast is okay but the story and the jokes are just dumb. Josh and Lil are best friends-since childhood-that have a big life disappointment at the same time; their girlfriends break up with them. Jessica is Josh's girlfriend that is really into social media a lot-she is always taking selfies and posting them-but she runs off with a neighbor that is a puppeteer. After the breakup, Lil decides that he and Josh should move in together as bromates-roommates that are bros. Asif and Brendan try to console their brokenhearted buddies at a Karaoke bar, which leads to a redneck festival in Amarillo, Texas-where more unfunny stuff happens. There are a few cameos. I remember seeing Rob Riggle, Snoop Dogg and Marls Gibbs-I think Snoop was a producer, which explains a lot.

It's rated R for language, drug use and sexual content-no nudity-and has a running time of 1 hour & 38 minutes.

It's not one that I would buy on DVD. I wouldn't rent it either. Heck, I don't even think I would watch it on tv but if you have a different sense of humor than I do, you might want to watch it on tv.

OMG! It IS that Bad!

Put "Natioan Lampoon's" in front of this title and you get the idea wht level the humor has sunk to in this film.

It's quite simply HORRIBLE.

Strangely, the acting and cast are pretty good. I had no problems with the directing either.

The problem is the script. It stinks. The writing is below 8th grade level. Way below. I cant even say it's sophormoric. It's lower than that.

I don't think even 12 year olds will find this humor funny.

Not really sure how a flick this horrendous gets backing to be made. I mean anyone who read the scrit had to know i was a complete stinker. They HAD to.

And what did they pay Snoop Dog to be in this?

In DVD form, you'd find this movie in the bargain-bin at Walgreens

My expectations for Bromates were admittedly low (somewhat non-existent) and typically, that would afford a movie a few extra stars. I assumed it would follow the same formula as movies like Oldschool, The Hangover, or The 40 Year Old Virgin - you know, bro-comedies. Frankly, if Bromates had half the charm of one of the second rate movies of that genre (ie Neighbors) - I would have gone about my business and had no reason to write a review.

That said, I found the writing to be so formulaic, so lackluster, so void of any original characters, situations, relationships, hardships, etc that I felt compelled to write on it. I laughed zero times. I predicted all the punchlines. I found the friendships to be so unbelievable that it distracted from any potentially funny interactions.

In DVD form, you'd find this movie in the bargain-bin at Walgreens between a copy of Free Willy 2 and a box of Mike and Ike's that someone discarded right before checkout. The writers should have to pay to have their names expunged from the IMDB page.

Not a single laugh or smile in this "comedy"
ijglamgroup15 February 2023
The movie opened with all the new age tech cliché lifestyles and all new world problems. Terrible cringe comedy. The plot is very boring. I feel like they tried to make this funny by throwing Snoop Dog in and the old pot skit, but it was very redundant, I feel like I saw this in an another movie. Comedy is tasteless, the characters are pitiful. I wanted to turn in off so many times. The characters are so boring.

This is all I wanted to say but I have to write out all of the characters I guess.

So here are all of the characters filled out for you and I still hate this movie with passion. Don't waste your time.

It wasn't that bad . But wasn't that good either
yttxgvtx27 February 2023
There was a few funny scenes here and there so I won't say it was all terrible. The cast did a good job with terrible writing and production.... Even the set designs were very bad. Other than that the storyline was all over the place and seemed like there was no real flow. Although the cameos were cool they seemed odd and forced. The characters just had no fit in the story at all. The acting was not as bad as the writing but it wasn't great either. It was on par for other B movies in this genre. Overall it's worth watching if you have nothing else to watch and if you can get thru it once I guarantee you will never speak or think of this movie ever again.

A Good Bromance Film
cgmovie8512 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed this film. It wasn't groundbreaking but Rel's performance was hilarious and it was nice to to see a diverse group of personalities.

Yea it's a bit cheesy and underwhelming, but its a reemergence of bromances, good storytelling on friends being there for each other, and taking risks in life. How many people would actually take a next day flight for the possibility of romance?

The acting in hicksville tough to digest. But each of the different friends had something fun and unique. They were genuniliny themselves and didnt have to hide who they were. It's hard to find true bromance anymore :(. It's funnier than most people's lives.

Movie is so nostalgic for us that grew up in the 80's and 90's
hello-9345310 October 2022
From the music score and also comedic level of entertaining our entrusting moments of heart. This really reminded me that we can still bring comedy to so many things. For example picking on each character with ought being rude or predictable. I'm gay. The gay character happening to be hilarious but not in the form of a straight predominately male movie. All of it was hilarious. I enjoyed every bit. Mr. Lil Rell was amazing. The main actor held his so well. The entire cast was so damn good. I really enjoyed this!! I will also say it has a message of. How to get over someone. But the bigger message is how to have close friends around you no matter where they come from. Just embrace the support system you have. It's important.

Ok hear me out.

Warning: Spoilers
Now upon the first twenty minutes of watching this, I was surely prepared to calling this some bs. I was truly amazed at how stupid this movie was. I literally stated, " This is this stupidest thing I've seen in awhile, but I'm gonna finish." I'm glad I did, because when we got to that ( SPOILER ALERT) redneck festival, stuff started to click.

As the movie went along, I started to look at each individual character. Regardless of how stereotypical they were written or directed, by the end you find each have lovable qualities moments that many can relate to if not you.

I think this movie might someday become a cult classic. There's a lot going on. There's jokes that land, where I might remember forever. The chase scene alone floored me.
