A much needed story being told
tanvi-hussain26 June 2021
Inspired by Satya Vyas' fictional novel "Chaurasi", the series "Grahan" is heart wrenching and spine chilling depiction of how brutal is brutal, unfolding two timelines - Ranchi 2016 and Bokaro 1984 and events of violence following the assassination of the then Prime Minister, Smt. Indira Gandhi on 31 October, 1984. Therein is a clear portrayal of how riots are provoked, how venom of hatred spewed by one person for self interest can blindfoldly turn people into mobs to walk on the road of vandalism. The horror, shadows of the carnage and violence of Bokaro Riots (1984) which blackened lives and aspirations of the Steel City. Without much spice this series has shown how people are fooled, instigated and driven towards hatred and violence by politicians and petty leaders, how neighborhoods, mohallahs, towns and villages thriving with diversity of people turn against each other.

It's cast Pavan Raj Malhotra, Anshuman Pushkar, Teekam Joshi, Wamiqa Gabbi, Sahidur Rahaman are apt in their characters. Zoya Hussain like always carrying her almost no make up approach since her debut film (Mukkabaaz) is organic in the role of the Investigating Officer. Amit Trivedi's music and Varun Grover's lyrics especially "Chori Chori" have made the series wholesome.

Grahan: Brilliant Story, Crisp Screenplay, Fine Acting, Melodius Music and Nice Direction
VishiSinha26 June 2021
Through his investigations, freelance journalist Santosh Jaiswal comes across a communal riot conspiracy. But before he could share the details with anyone, he got murdered. In 2016, the CM forms SIT to investigate the 1984 Bokaro Anti-Sikh riots. SP City Amrita Singh, who leads the SIT came across a photograph of one of the rioters and she recognizes the man in the photograph as his father Gurusevak. Gurudeva refuses to disclose anything about the photograph and his past. In search of truth, Amrita goes to Bokaro with the SIT, and the pages of the past start to unwind. And so does questions - Who was Rishi Ranjan, who led the violent mob in 1984? Who was Manu? Who was Pragya? Who was Saini? Who were Guru, Jhandu, and Chhabra ji? What was the role of Chunnu in the infamous Sikh genocide that swept Bokaro? And the most important and relevant question - why the people who used to stay together turned into blood-thirsty devils?

Inspired from Satya Vyas' novel "Chaurasi", this 8-episode series "Grahan" switches between two time periods - Ranchi 2016 and Bokaro 1984. The team behind the story-screenplay of Grahan - Anu Singh Chaudhary, Navjot Gulati, Vibha Singh, Prateek Payodhi, Ranjan Chandel, and Shailendra Kumar Jha has done a commendable job. Despite making many additions and changes in the story, the writing team has succeeded in retaining the soul of the original novel "Chaurasi".

Anshuman Pushkar and Wamika Gabbi have lived the characters of Rishi and Manu respectively. Zoya Hasan as Amrita Singh and Teekam Joshi as Sanjay Singh have been quite impressive. Whatsoever small role it was, every actor has done his part effectively, be it Raj Sharma (Saini), be it Sahidur Rahman (DSP Vikas Mandal), be it Satyakam Anand (Kedar Bhagat), or be it Saharsh Shukla (Guru). Last, but not least, Pawan Malhotra was the top performer. While portraying Gurusevak, who remains silent most of the time, Pawan Malhotra has acted wonderfully through his eyes and facial expressions. It is one of his finest performances.

Varun Grover's lyrics are beautiful and Amit Trivedi's melodious music does wonders, like always. "Jogiya", "Chori Chori" and "Main Hoon Teri Parchhai" (penned and sung by Swanand Kirkire) stays with you for long. The background music also suits the theme. The cinematography is OK, but the Editing was under par. The direction was superb. The production design is also among the highlights of the series.

Grahan is a must-watch. Go for it.

Fine story with brilliant acting, direction, MUSIC.
maximumriskk26 June 2021
Pavan, Zoya and Tikam very fine acting. Specially Pavan malhotra the underrated actor. He is brilliant as always.

Story packed with super BGM and sweet songs.

Zoya fit in IPS character.

One thing: Forcefully hindu muslim riots addition in different story leads to another track. Which should be ignored. However it's a short ignorable scene.

Overall good.

Very mature
sameerlodaya24 June 2021
The series is very mature in every aspect and is also on a mature storyline

Zoya Made a good come back after mukkabaaz she looked perfect on her ips character and played very maturely and seriously, teekam and pavan played their roles which gave a uplift to the series

The story is about 1984 riots which is connected to present, love, politics, father daughter relationship, killings etc which is nicely directed by ranjan with good background scores and soothing songs

The only drawback of this series is that it is very slow and lost in some segments but it ended in a reasonable climax and so it's a good binge on this weekend.

Average
madonnicallysony28 June 2021
The last episode is typical bollywood style. Story is not developed properly. The series only stands coz of the good acting by everyone. Amrita comes off as a dumb cop. The stars of this show are Rishi and Manu. I sat through this crap just to see the reason as to why they were separated. The riot backdrop was heartwrenching.

Average series.

Riots are designed and executed with malevolent intentions, and are neither accidental nor destined
msunando22 July 2021
SP Amrita Kaur (aka Amu, Zoya Hussain) is disillusioned by her humdrum Ranchi Police job, the lack of challenges and indifferent supervisors. She lives with her father Gursewak Singh (Pawan Raj Malhotra) who is a doting dad to the motherless Amu. Gursewak speaks little, but understands his daughter's dilemma. And one fine day, a Special Investigation Team is set up by the Jharkhand Government and Amu is made the team laid to research and submit a report on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots that rocked Bokaro, just a hundred kilometres away. Amu realises that it's not going to be easy because of the vintage of the case and believes that most of those who were impacted by the riots or those who were behind them, may no longer be alive. Albeit, she takes it up as a challenge, and almost against the advice of Gursewak, a staunch Sikh himself, sets out to do her best.

But the facts of the anti-Sikh riots in Bokaro are indeed shrouded in mystery, lack of evidence and unwillingness of people to speak up. On top of that, Amu is herself quite intrigued by a character from 1984, Rishi Ranjan, who she quickly discovers, was the leader of the carnage from photographs available. Here starts her problems - political and administrative pressures commence to pile up against her as she digs into the history and every time she starts working on a lead, things go out of control. Yet, she realises that the case has something to do with her family and as if out of a dream, chances to meet her mother in Bokaro, who Gursewak had told her that she had died when Amu was very young. From here on, Amu gets embroiled in a severe conflict of interest as a fact explodes on her face like a bomb. Whether she is able to find out who Rishi Ranjan was, what is the connection of the case to her family and if she is able to come clean of the blemish on her reputation is the crux of Grahan.

Grahan is not meant to be a documentary that researches and prepares a white paper on the anti-Sikh riots in Bokaro or for that matter anywhere. As such, it may leave viewers with certain expectations disgruntled, like Vidhu Vinod Chopra's "Shikara". Grahan is a drama about human values, sacrifices and a love sublime, quite reminiscent of Yash Chopra's "Veer Zaara". But that politicians and powerful people could rake up communal disharmony through riots to fulfil their own aspirations using religion as a divisuve tool, has been depicted in graphic details in Grahan. Pawan Raj Malhotra as Gursewak Singh delivers an understated yet indelible performance despite his limited screen time. Zoya Hussain is powerful in her essay of an individual torn between professional and personal demands of the case. But Anshuman Pushkar as Rishi Ranjan is downright delightful and credible and is aptly complemented by Wamiqa Gabbi as Manu Chhabra. Teekam Joshi as Sanjay Singh is sophisticated and poised in his demonic aspirations. Grahan is marked by some superlative performances, undoubtedly. Amit Trivedi's music is yet another asset of the series, unending its aesthetic appeal of this unmissable series helmed by Ranjan Chandel.

Wonderful background score. Powerful performances from Pavan Malhotra and entire starcast, what was exceptional was music and lyrics. They always take the story ahead and never come as hurdle. What may some people not like is its pace and total runtime of the series.

8 out of 10 only for last episode
yashcyclist1 July 2021
A good mixture of love, crime, suspense and drama. A little bit slow, but because of good storyline, it is manageable. All the characters tried their best to realise the story on the screen. Only unsatisfactory is the acting of IPS Amrita Sing. Something is missing in her acting. She is unable to express the real charm of a leading lady character of a film. She is even, to some extent failed to show the role of a IPS Officer. Direction could be a little better. The story itself somehow covers the weak direction. All the episodes progressed in a slow pace. The last episode is the key to the success of the whole series. It's so striking that it's very hard to dislike the series.

A tad too slow for current times!! A decent watch!
valyriansteel-6834926 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Even though the plot doesn't digress with unwanted subplots, it's still a bit of slog to binge watch this series. The performances by the lead pair in the 80s is great. Zoya tried her best but she's a misfit for the role. She lacks the agility and the sharpness of a female cop. Her expressions for vast majority of the episodes are wooden although she does a decent job in the last episode. It's a predictable plot but didn't need 8 episodes to get to the point. I surely don't want another season to track down the corrupt CM please.

A Sensitively Handled Period Drama With Compassion !!!
cs_rahul_prasad4 August 2021
Grahan is set in the aftermath of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, also known as the 1984 Sikh Massacre, in which former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards, resulting in a series of organised atrocities against Sikhs in India. Even decades later, the memories of the horrific events remain vivid in the minds of those who had witnessed them.

Helmed by Ranjan Chandel, this eight-part series is a fictional drama that follows Manjeet Chhabra aka Manu (Wamiqa Gabbi) and Rishi Ranjan (Anshuman Pushkar) as they fall in love against the backdrop of tragic incidents that transpired in 1984, particularly in Bokaro. However, at present, it is focused on Amrita Singh (Zoya Hussain), an honest and sincere IPS officer, who is also heading the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that is tasked with investigating the 1984 riots. Amrita is adamant about finding what has happened decades ago and is taken aback when she learns that her father, Gursevak Singh (Pavan Raj Malhotra) was one of the prime suspects.

On the one hand, Shailendra Kumar Jha and his team of writers (Anu Singh Chaudhary, Navjot Gulati, Vibha Singh, Prateek Payodhi, Ranjan Chandel) have developed a mystery drama that explores how love blossoms in young hearts and reaches its zenith amid the constraints of a small town. And, on the other hand, it depicts the transformation of ordinary people into rioters- which is fueled sometimes by misleading exhortations and sometimes by individuals seeking personal gains. The screenplay features a multi-layered narrative that includes elements such as the naivety of 80s romance, gruesome violence and atrocities, and confessions, all of which combine to make this saga a compelling one. To keep the plot authentic to the one it is inspired by, Shailendra Kumar Jha keeps the names of the characters Manu and Rishi similar to those in Satya Vyas' novel 'Chaurasi'.

Kamaljeet Singh's cinematography deserves special mention since he has been able to capture the magic of the 80s era on screen and make it believable for the spectators. It's also well-supported by the background score, which complements the intensity of the story (for example, the melody of 'dhoom takit takit....'). And some meaningful songs by music composer Amit Trivedi and lyricist Varun Grover, such as 'Chori Chori,' and 'O Jogiya', captures the various facets of the plot and adds to its overall effect. The show moves at a slow speed, which at times feels like an ideal choice for a series of this genre. The various subplot, on the other hand, take far too long to unravel, causing the plot to lose its grip. Tighter editing (by Shan Mohammed) and shorter episodes would have had a greater impact on the viewers. Overall, it's a powerful, emotional experience, although the action sequences (choreographed by Sunil Rodrigues) don't quite reach the mark.

It's a simple love story with intriguing characters, especially in the way they're developed. With their believable performances, Wamiqa Gabbi and Anshumaan Pushkar as Manu and Rishi, respectively, bring purity and much-needed warmth to their romance. Manu's freckles, which change from scene to scene, are the only glaring inconsistency in the narrative, but, that again, is the make-up artist's problem. Gabbi, who is a Punjabi and has appeared in multiple Punjabi films, delivers her dialogues with a perfect colloquial accent.

The portrayal of an honest cop by Zoya Hussain who is struggling to work on her own terms, is remarkable. Amrita's character is loud even when she isn't speaking, and always sporting t-shirts and cargos while carrying an intense look throughout. She is well supported by her subordinate DSP Vikas Mandal (played by Sahidur Rahaman). Pavan Raj Malhotra as Gursevak outshines everyone with his powerful and riveting performance as Amrita's father. The rest of the cast lends good support in pushing the narrative forward.

Overall, 'Grahan' is an emotional tale that will leave you with a bag full of mixed emotions - love, hate, anguish, and betrayal. At times, it overwhelms too. But it's worth watching, especially for the handling of such a sensitive subject and its well-crafted, believable characters.
