Eye for an Eye
BandSAboutMovies11 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I saw a tweet the other day where someone was amazed that there are modern westerns that still come out. These are the same folks amazed that Trump won, that middle America outnumbers the cities and that DVDs are still for sale at WalMart. I mean, come to Belle Vernon, PA to my America's Super Store and you'll discover several aisles and bins just overflowing with movies like Eye for an Eye.

According to his IMB page, writer, director and actor L. J. Martin is the author of over 68 book length works from such major NY publishers as Bantam, Avon and Pinnacle with titles covering genres like westerns, thrillers, mysteries, and historical; two cookbooks, two how-to write books, a cartoon book and even a book on how to kil cancer, because L. J. hasn't just beat cancer once, he beat it twice. He's been a wrangler, camp cook, draftsman, water company manager, sailor, printer, real estate broker and developer, appraiser and contractor. And now, well, he's making a movie.

With John Savage from The Deer Hunter as one of the leads, this is the story of Quint Reagan (Shane Clouse, who also composed the music An Eye for an Eye), whose small ranch runs afoul of men who kill his wife Consuela (Ashley Rae McGee) and take his land.

Sold as "a classic western revenge tale," just go in knowing this is a modern shot on digital low budget movie where some anachronisms seep through. But if you've been renting modern films like this at Red Box or buying them from a swimming pool-sized container at WalMart, you already know that.

well, at least they tried

Westerns have lost a lot. It's basically the same plot as any other western only with pretty amateur actors, even John Savage was lacking. At some point, maybe folks ought say " If you don't have the resources to make a good film, just don't make one". I applaud their effort, I just wish they had saved more finances, gotten better at everything and then shot the film. The scenery was fantastic, but the buildings, the bar, the sets in general just didn't work. The actors were robotic and didn't hold my attention at all. The story itself could've probably worked with better actors, wardrobe, sets, etc.

Somewhere in this...

Warning: Spoilers
Movie is a good western trying to get out. There's little to recommend. Shot on video which is a big negative, the story of a sheriff hunting down those who raped and murdered his pregnant wife (terrible effects at the beginning of the movie), is far from original and this has no new twists. The acting is mostly amateurish at best, though the scenery is beautiful. It's done on the cheap and the lead has zero charisma. Direction is pedestrian at best. It's too long for its material. John Savage is the high point of this dull movie.

Scratch my eyes out!

Lord how mercy sakes! This is just to clean. All the actors look as though they just came from a weekend at the local spa. The dialog sounds like a few middle schoolers got together and decided to figure out how to write a movie screenplay. Let us not forget the music score that sounds like it's from a '60's bikers movie. Someone should have noticed that when you shoot a lever action rifle and Jack the lever back, a shell casing ejects in the air. Director John Ford is rolling over in his grave.

All the outfits look like someone went to Walmart and spent a few dollars in clothing section.

I have been watching westerns for 65 years and this one needs to be removed from view. Even an old bored man like me, had to fast forward through it. It's also amazing that the log house had insulated glass windows. Cowboys didn't wear shirts with buttons. All I can say is, watch paint dry or bread bake, but skip this terrible attempt at acting, directing, writing and trying to read a cue card.

Ok Western

Warning: Spoilers
Eye For Eye is an okay western I saw on Amazon. It does not deserve 9 or 10 star reviews like it is Shane or The Big Country, but it is not a dog of a film that deserves 1 or 2 stars either. It falls in between. If someone has seen westerns before, they know the story. Bad guys sent by a wealthy man kill a wife and her husband ( Sheriff Reagan) seeks revenge. He also very quickly falls in love with a widow named Lola with a son. Gunmen From Laredo immediately comes to mind ( except there it was a half Indian/Mexican woman named Rosetta ( played by the beautiful Maureen Hingert) instead of a Mexican-American that Reagan falls for). The best part of the movie was the scenery that was very well done. Finally Does Reagan end up with Lola? Spoilers ahead. Of course he does and the bad guys are taken care of ( although not all by Reagan ( including one killed by Lola)). Again an ok western but not as good as Gunmen From Laredo, which is a classic "B" Western. Again as an ok movie Eye for Eye gets 5/10 stars from me.

The acting, music, dialog, cinematography, and storyline are amazing! This is LJ Martin's first movie but no one would know it! The awards are piling up and all are well deserved! Don't miss this wonderful film and be sure to share it, with family and friends!!! I know I loved it!

Classic Authentic Western
frank-5341825 July 2022
How cool is it to watch a film which reminds us of so many big screen and TV classics from our childhood? This genre was very popular featuring big Hollywood stars. "True Grit," "Chisum,"Tombstone," "Magnificent Seven,"and "Once Upon a Time in the West" were among dozens of great Westerns. The genre was also very popular with weekly TV series like "Gunsmoke,"Have Gun Will Travel (Paladin)," "The Lone Ranger," and "Wagon Train."

The film location was on beautiful Montana ranches showing glorious Big Sky venues reflective of rugged simpler life in the late 1800's. While obviously not a Big budget Hollywood production that is in fact part of its appeal. The revenge plot line of ex-Sheriff (Shane Clouse) versus land baron (John Savage) is epic. A subplot of the fate of widow McLaughlin (Blanca Blanco) and her son adds an additional dilemma in search of a solution.

Other reviewers seem overly critical of the production values, edits and dialogue. I suspect most of them have never watched an old fashioned western thus base their misguided opinion on expectations of 21st Century technologies in movie making. This is an Indie Film and should be viewed as such. In that perspective I found it a terrific representation of the genre.

Classic western, classic John Savage
Savage and new comer Shane Clouse (who also did the score), carry this tale of revenge and retribution beyond the norm. Although a low budget avoiding expensive sets and costumes, the story carries you back to 1878. Adapted from his novella, the film was also directed and produced by bestselling western author L. J. Martin. Don't miss it.
