better but still stupid
fountasalexander1 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
If you read the other reviews many point out how stupid the characters have been acting this season, and that would be completely correct.

Why didn't john sr just kill strand?

Why did strand turn his back on john?

Why did strand kill the only trustworthy person in his tower?

Why do they mention how dangerous the radiation is and the exposure of the walkers, yet walk into a massive horde of them?

I liked Johns sacrifice though, he tried fixing what he couldn't with his son, and that is noble.

5/10.

What's with the (fake)baby switching??
annikayo30 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I am losing my mind over this season hahaha. That is the most ridiculous CGI baby in the tunnel. And then the sudden baby switch. I mean Mo has been crying non stop, but there must be another solution than just switching to a different baby. It was too obvious.

Also I am not following any of the characters, I don't feel connected to their stories. It is so different from the other seasons.

I miss the old gang and John Dorie.

I mean I get that people need to be killed off to make it believable.

It feels rushed, this whole season.

Morgan trying to kill Strand... Just get on the road and find something else. Stop wasting time on trying to control people. People will be people (just like Wes thinking "o, well, someone I know to be a good and decent person does something desperate, let me just switch teams to THE ULTIMATE PSYCHO WITH A GOD COMPLEX" loser, wtf dude.)

Meh...
nicflam1 May 2022
I watch it only because I wanna know how all this catches up with the main show. I'm pretty sure they're going to re-introduce CRM in some way and that is the only reason I keep watching this.

I know I'm not the only one.

What?!
marttito2422 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is by far one of the stupidest episodes I've ever seen. Howard, John SR, June are all idiots. So we have wes here who left Morgan's group because Luciana is using Daniels dementia to fight strand, yet he joins a psychopath that throws people off the roof for no reason.

Victor tells John SR to throw howard off the roof and does it with no problem, but when John has a chance to kill Victor he just hits him over the head So he can take baby mo on a suicide mission to Morgan? Killing Victor would've ended the whole war. Also that CGI on the baby face was horrendous.

This show is a mess, nothing makes sense, characters are making stupid decisions for no reason. This whole story line with the nuclear fallout is ridiculous at this point because they all would be dead already. I thought season 4 and 5 of Fear the Walking Dead was bad but season 7 is by far the worst. The fact that Scott Gimbel still has a job is amazing.

What is happening to the dialogue
traffordbage2 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Time to leave another review on a show I keep watching but am losing patience for.

I'll start with what I liked about the episode.

  • Actual consequences for actions
  • Walker design
  • Set design for the Tower.

  • Strand.

I'm afraid.. that's it.

What is going on?

1. As many have mentioned, irradiated walkers. John is on his deathbed, so thats fine, but June and Mo arent in danger - stop forgetting your own rules! June stabbed an irradiated walker at the start, and then is afraid 5 minutes later!

2. Convenience
  • Isn't it convenient, they didn't catch June OR John going in the elevator (especially since June went through often) but catch Grace immediately (who isn't on screen) ?

  • Isn't it convenient, the gate perfectly fits into both openings and can be pushed through by walkers?

  • Isn't it convenient, dory can both feel and find his soaked gun in murky water after a zombie literally disarms him like a wild west movie?

3. Dialogue WHAT were they thinking. We get constant mentions of the word legacy, i'm surprised the episode isn't titled Legacy - thats the only surprise this episode. Then suddenly John is all about legacy. His response to a genuinely good comeback "This coming from a man who abandoned his only son" is "We aren't talking about me right now".

Strand throws -nerdy-2nd-hand-man- off the edge of the building for being framed (knowingly) but trusts John for no reason after he's found WITH june and mo hiding the baby. WHY?

4. Just General Stupidity
  • WES is now the second leader of the tower? WHY WES?

  • Scene with charlie made no sense, why did john ask if those were radiation burns on her.. he also had them!

  • I'd like to add, he got hurt before charlie. Charlie is rotting away but John only gets ill once the audience knows he's burnt.

PLEASE, AMC, do whatever you did with season 6 - to season 8. Dont let it continue like this, its falling apart.

I love this universe but this is truly terrible writing, we're going backwards to season 5.

His Legacy
tristan_191 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Best episode of 7B so far. John's sacrifice is very noble. We have the pieces set, and Mo is back with Morgan and co. The battle is won, the war is brewing.

Of course, Victor would respect the move of planting the walkie. He is himself cunning. I liked the cinematography and camera shots in this one. It was more dynamic and creative, and the colors pretty vibrant.

Overall, good character study, and sad departure. It's a pretty tight story too, and the episode is well executed.

Almost a good epidode... Almost...
panamenito1 May 2022
I believe showrunners and writters have the incorrect impression that killing a character will turn an epidode into a good one. They are running out of New ideas and that's why this show is loosing fans every week. After watching this episode I wonder how the baby is looking Like Grace instead of Isaac and Rachel???

Nothing about this show makes sense anymore.
simianfriday1 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This show just keeps getting worse with every episode.

They've previously established - multiple times now, in the second half of this season alone - that even being *near* the irradiated walkers is massively dangerous and killing those walkers increases the likelihood that you will suffer radiation poisoning and die as a result. It happened to Charlie *and* John Sr already. Yet here they are - trying to sneak baby Mo out of the tower through a tunnel full of irradiated walkers. When the tunnel floods and the walkers come through, June and John hide behind a gate and have a little heart to heart while John holds Mo inches away from several irradiated zombies (many of which he shoots shortly after this scene, while still holding Mo).

Later, when John fails to convince Strand to change his ways, he decides to help get Mo out of the tower by calmly and slowly walking her through the moat of irradiated zombies surrounding the tower. Never, at any point in all of this, does *anyone* raise a concern that Mo might get radiation poisoning and die - despite earlier in the episode calling attention to how dangerous those irradiated zombies are by bringing up what happened to Charlie and showing what's happening to John. On top of all of this - everyone who helped get Mo out literally just stands around waiting to get caught by Strand and the rangers when they know full well that Strand will use them all as hostages against Morgan (if not just kill them outright) - it makes *zero* sense for them to stay in the tower at this point. All of them should have immediately left.

To make things even dumber - Morgan is standing on the stupid phone platform at the edge of the tower's parking lot this whole time. All Strand would have to do is have one of his people take aim with one of those nice long range rifles they're carrying around and shoot Morgan - all from the perfect sniper vantage point on the roof of the tower.

This show is easily one of the dumbest scripted shows on television but I can't stop myself from hate watching it. It's like a train wreck that you just can't look away from, each week bringing a new train barreling down the tracks to crash and derail on the remains of the previous train, over and over again.

A great man

Warning: Spoilers
RIP John Dorie Sr.

This episode is my favourite episode yet. It is not as great as John's death in season 6 but it's just great as it is. This episode shows me that the second part of this season would be awesome.

Warning: Spoilers
When I think this show can't get any stupider, no idea of radiation or fallout. One character appears only to die. Now this silliness. A zombie knocks johns gun out of his hand into murky water and he finds it in two seconds. Why are people working with Victor (who really needs to go) when the only punishment is to get tossed off the roof? I could go on, but why bother?

I can tell already this Episode is going to be hugely Underrated
ezzedd1 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
YES for starters I 100% agree John Sr should of just killed strand HOWEVER otherwise I'd say this is one of the better episodes of the whole series. Strand making the call to have Howard killed is not stupid, it shows how a person who is so far up themselves can completely screw up due to their egotistical Mental Gymnastics. I 100% agree the first 3 episodes of this half have been tragic and yes I may be even overrating this episode due to the drivel we have received from ALL TWD Universe shows these past 2 years but this episode will be a standout of the Series for me!

S7.E12 - Finally a Decent Episode [7/10]
panagiotis199314 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(S7. E12) My Reaction / Review for Fear The Walking Dead Season 7 Episode 12 ''Sonny Boy'': Episode 11 was ok and I gave it a rating of 6.5/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. Charlie is dying? I hope so, never liked this character. Wow John has radiation burns too? That sucks, I hope he wont die, I like the character. Wow Howard is dead? I didn't see that coming but im kind of happy he died, it felt good. Does Victor really think that he can trust John? John started drinking again? I mean he is probably gonna die soon so I get it. Victor wants to be Mo's only parent? Interesting. John got some balls, first attacking Victor and now getting Mo to safety. Its so sad that John is dead, I really liked him. He died like a hero. Finally a good episode. My rating is 7/10.

Struggle
Rob-O-Cop6 May 2022
I thought last weeks episode was a struggle to get through, this one was many levels worse. This time Dorie Snr makes a slow amble for the door. He acted well but the material was so nonsensical it hardly mattered. I've no idea wtf June was supposed to be doing, or the logic of any of these characters. They've got a African Nation level despot throwing people off the top of buildings on a whim, and June and Grace aren't running for the door?

They've got walkies to do their ranger work yet walkies are banned?

They do ranger work regularly yet getting out of the building is near impossible?

Wes wants to team up with Victor because?

Victor is a crazy dictator because?

None of this is established or makes sense.

And no one can hit Morgan with a rifle in their front yard?

And everyone plays this garbage with a straight face.

Inconvenient
JoaoPradoSilva30 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The biggest problem in this episode and this last season is the characters completely ignoring the zombie apocalypse, it seens like things just got normal, zombies are just a background for terrible writing and completely non sense dialogue.

The truly biggest problem however is the dialogues, why do we have 90% of the narrative happening through this terrible writing???

The last sequence still very watchable, John going dressed like a medieval/ww1 soldier is phenomenal and a well thought execution from the art direction...

While it may not offer significant plot progression, it excels in character development and thematic exploration
fernandoschiavi2 May 2024
As a paranoid Strand searches for what he believes is a "resistance" in the Tower, a radio is found amongst Howard's belongings and Mo vanishes, causing Strand to suspect that Howard is a traitor. Privately, Howard reveals to John that he is loyal to Strand because his family left him before the apocalypse and he hopes that they will find the Tower some day. John deduces that June kidnapped Mo and is trying to sneak her out through the tunnels to Morgan. While John is trying to stop her, a storm washes in a number of walkers, trapping the two. John reveals he contracted terminal radiation sickness while rescuing Charlie; John sees securing the Tower and Mo's future as his legacy.

Strand rescues John and June, and John confesses to planting the radio on Howard so that he could become Strand's new partner. Unmoved, Strand forces John to throw Howard off of the Tower's roof before revealing that Howard's family had already been dead for months, which Strand had hidden from him. Realizing that Strand is beyond reason, John dons a makeshift suit of armor and carries Mo through the walker moat to Morgan. John is bitten in the process, and with the herd closing in, he sacrifices himself so Morgan can escape. Strand threatens to kill June and Grace if Morgan ever sets foot in the Tower and broadcasts an invitation to everyone else to join him. With Howard and John dead, Strand takes on Wes as his new partner.

Season 7, episode 12 of "Fear the Walking Dead," titled "Sonny Boy," explores the complexities of trust, loyalty, and sacrifice in a post-apocalyptic world. The episode primarily focuses on the aftermath of the group's decision to trust Howard, a new character whose true intentions remain ambiguous. This installment effectively builds tension and raises questions about the nature of survival and human connection.

The episode opens with Howard proving his worth to the group by successfully navigating them through a dangerous area infested with the living dead. However, doubts about his reliability begin to surface as his behavior becomes increasingly erratic. This sets the stage for a series of intense confrontations and moral dilemmas, as the group must decide whether to trust Howard or abandon him to ensure their own safety.

One of the standout scenes is a heated exchange between Howard and Alicia, where their conflicting views on survival and morality are laid bare. This scene is not only emotionally charged but also serves as a microcosm of the broader themes of the episode, highlighting the fragility of trust and the lengths people will go to protect themselves and their loved ones in desperate times.

Thematically, "Sonny Boy" delves into the idea of chosen family and the bonds that are formed in the face of adversity. The episode also explores the concept of redemption, as characters grapple with their past actions and strive to find a sense of purpose in a world that seems devoid of hope. These themes are underscored by strong performances from the cast, particularly from Colman Domingo as Strand and Alycia Debnam-Carey as Alicia, who deliver nuanced portrayals of characters struggling with their own inner demons.

While it may not offer significant plot progression, it excels in character development and thematic exploration. The episode's focus on trust and loyalty makes it a standout installment that resonates with the larger themes of the series, making it a must-watch for fans of the show.

Writing is trash
ubilstein19 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I hate the writing of recent episodes and this one is no exception. I think the biggest offense are 1. John not killing Strand although he had a bullet left and even said so 2. Magical walkie-talkie: John just immediately speaks into Strand's walkie and Morgan is on the line 3. WES BEING COMPLETELY OUT OF CHARACTER. He painted trees, had to kill his brother because of a cult. And now left Lucianna because she lied to Daniel, only TO JOIN STRAND AND WANTING TO BE HIS ASSISTENT???? Strand is a cult leader himself and how is this ANY better than being with Lucianna????

I gave 2 stars not 1 because at least I liked the look of the episode, especially the rainy first part.

"Sonny Boy" is lackluster in so many ways with almost no tension or logic
Holt34410 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Ron Underwood directed this week's episode of Fear TWD. The direction and visual storytelling is quite good, the camera work and cinematography were good but have certainly been better. I think the way they shot the interrogation and dialogue scenes were boring and nothing special, in terms of camera work and editing, too simplistic. The sound editing and musical score is fantastic. The flaws from season 7A are still present, and the writing is extremely flawed. Some of the dialogue and motivations are stupid and very forced, I just don't get why almost all the characters has to be so mysterious and not upfront with things, it continues in every episode and it feels like the showrunners like that kind of writing, well I don't. Andrew Chambliss and Ian B. Goldberg and the staff writers are unfortunately unable to write good dialogue. They come out sounding wooden and unrealistic, then again, dialogue can be hard to write. But these guys are poor at it, Fear deserves better writing overall, like the quality it had in S1-3. The overall writing were bad and the showrunners once again strove for the opposite of logic.

When baby Mo goes missing inside the Tower, Dorie Sr. Finds himself in a unique position to prove his worth to an increasingly paranoid Strand. That's the premise of the episode and it's clear how it's focused on Victor's community. In S7A I thought the only time Victor threw people off the roof, it was for a good reason, with people being scarce in the world, but nope it seems a regular thing in this episode. How could the showrunners character assassinate Victor Strand when they wrote him in a good way in Season 6, this isn't con man Strand, this is a different character entirely. His motivations and actions isn't the Strand we knew or the one Dave Erickson (the one who created him) would have written. I expected a great performance from Keith Carradine but the material he got was disappointing and lackluster, thus his performance was only good.

"Sonny Boy" was a step back in terms of quality regarding the previous episode, I strongly believe the individual stories/episodes don't work like they did in S6 when everyone was apart. As Fear used to be a serialized show and did it perfectly, I can't say the same with Andrew Chambliss and Ian B. Goldberg run. This episode doesn't contribute anything to the civil war, just what's been happening in The Tower. But it felt poorly executed as we haven't really spent any time with these characters, especially Strand and Howard in this second half. I think this episode would have worked better in a serialized format, with more intrigues and tension. Season 3 is a good example of a storyline being full of depth and serialized drama, and the civil war in this season had the potential, sadly it never hit its potential and probably never will. What is the goal with this season? I hope we get new showrunners next season, it's either that or a cancellation.

To the spoiler part of my review. The reason why my rating went down so high. When John Dorie Sr went out without the iconic zombie camouflage which he had time with by the way, I was thinking how stupid he was and then he died because of it. I'm pretty sure the actor wanted out of the show, too bad it was before Madison's reappearance so they would get a reunion from the Deadwood days. That whole sequence left a sour taste in my mouth not because of how he died, but how Grace and June and Wendell didn't leave The Tower when there were no zombies close to them. Honestly, the showrunners should get fired. John Dorie Sr's death was the final nail in the coffin, the writers went for a death and thought it would make the show full of suspension and tension again. But nope, it had the opposite feeling for me, it was poorly executed in every way possible. John Dorie Sr knew he was going to die by radiation, but dying that stupidly was not the way I ever expecting him to die. If the writers have made the decision to make Strand into this villain, why didn't John Sr kill him instead of knocking him unconscious. The more I think of this episode, the more I despise it.

A ridiculously written episode. I don't even feel sad when characters die anymore.
frankiesilver-9183611 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is the second episode this season focused on John Sr., which I found to be a weird choice since we still haven't gotten a June episode, but he is very likable.

Still, to be completely honest, this episode did nothing but piss me off because I'm sick of the illogically written characters and the lack of any realism in a once very grounded show.

Why would Strand trust John Sr. And not Howard? Why would he not kill both of them? If he was gonna die anyway, why didn't John makes his legacy killing Strand when he had the chance? Why is Wes on Strand's side?

John going back and forth on letting the baby escape makes no sense. Neither does making it through a horde with no guts. The level of dumb plot convenience with who gets radiation sickness when, and with Strand finding Howard's family is insane.

I honestly did think it was time to kill John Sr. Off despite liking him, but this is one of the most unbelievably stupid deaths - symbolism or not. I would've just had him go out killing Teddy at the end of Season 6.

But anyway, rant over. Aggravating episode.

So disappointed, horrible writing, this show is not making any sense anymore, complete stupidity in every situation the characters are put in, I personally love all the characters of this show love the performance of every single one, amazing performances, but I have no idea what the writers are trying to do here, it's just cringing and painful to watch.

Uncanny valley baby
rmmil1 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Before I get into this week's episode too much, I'd like to point out Baby Mo, in particular Baby Mo at the 17:55 mark and there about. Definitely a digital uncanny valley baby, some of the worse digital effects I've seen in modern tv. Indicative of the startling lack of quality control on this show.

A moment of silence for the actress who plays Charlie, idk what you did to make the show runners mad at you, but ending your time on this series as Radiation Girl Dying in Bed with almost no dialogue is a pretty thankless way to go. I'm sorry.

Speaking of thankless endings, when Howard and John Sr. Were given just the slightest additional backstory this episode I thought "Well, they are dead meat now". Sure enough!

I actually laughed out loud when they killed them off after two minutes of character development. FTWD just CANT give any character any depth without immediately killing them off. I didn't even like Howard or John Sr. (replacement John), it just becomes yet more pointless dead ends.

Oh, and remember how they said over and over again you just "can't" shoot or stab the radiation zombies? Guess you can if you really need to, seemed to have no ill effects when they did it this episode. Such poor writing.

Madison Watch: Zero sign of Madison, zero sign of her next episode. Still assuming we won't see her until the finale or close to it. So along with everything else the show-runners have introduced bait and switch to their repertoire of writing skills.

Started well but ended up as another failure
matp-476001 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This show is just exhausting lately. I struggle to get through every episode and Im honestly sad about how low it has fallen. Two of the only interesting characters left on the show are written off so easily. One of the deaths was kind of satisfying but the other one was so poorly executed it was almost insulting.

John Sr carried this episode really well in the 1st half of the episode which I actually thought was the best part. It is sad to see him go and in that way too it was just too dumb

Morgan really doesnt even try to help John Sr and just let's him get eaten? Really?

Plus that armour they dressed John up in was just stupid, ugly and corny as hell. Of course he got bitten how the hell was that going to protect him.

So far in Season 7B the writers have managed to ruin almost every character on the show and make them incredibly annoying.

I just can't, anymore
johncconnelly11 May 2022
I literally could not finish the episode and I think I'm officially done with the series. It's become unwatchable. I don't understand how the writers can be so untalented. Everything that made this series must watch TV in the first few seasons is now dead. The show itself is a zombie version of what it once was. Slow, mindless, and rotting from the inside.

Three episode arc crammed into one
stoners-29 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
John, he went from trying to reason with Strand using a talk, to which June says something to the effect of Strand will turn you to his thinking. By the end of the episode he has flip flopped on his mind set three or four times, has a heroic death and dies. I felt nothing, no tears, and by the time I watched episode 13 today I had already forgotten he died. John was my favorite character, he had a heroic death and I didn't get choked up. They forced all of this arc into one episode instead of developing it across three or four episodes, creating tension ..is he really betraying June...did he get bit....will he make it....nope none of that. Four episodes worth of story forced into one. Bad writing. I still cry when Abraham dies. Still horrified over Glenn. John SR I felt nothing.
