If Dr Who went darker
Hallelujah2894 November 2022
"The Devil's Hour" is a binge-worthy Amazon Prime streaming series that is almost like an exercise in thought: what if the 12th Doctor Who, played by Peter Capaldi as well, did not have the moral not to kill? What if he did not have the same capabilities, but the same motive to stop chaos?

The limiting factors produce a darker tone as well as a doctor who is not a doctor, but a fixer who often gets it wrong, because he cannot see as far into the future as Doctor Who can.

But at any rate, while Peter Capaldi is surely a main attraction to the show, he is not the starring character or the one whose journey we follow.

That credit goes to an almost single mother named Lucy Chambers, whose son and mother has the same disconcerting issues of being able to see what's not there. And Lucy Chambers, the most socially functional member of the family, is starting to struggle with the same psychiatric issues (or could they be abilities?) herself.

And once she comes to terms with what she can do, or not, we see her struggle along her own motivations to fix things, namely her son, who can be the most gifted and the most impaired of them all.

Overall a beguiling series with a bit of muffled impact for me at the end, with some curveballs throughout that strike me as somewhat improbable as too many tragedies of similar nature were set to occur. It's difficult for high concept thrillers to totally land, so I can make allowances there for what still is a thought provoking series. Commendable acting from the child actor who plays Isaac.

Interesting, clever, and entertaining
mbell-562143 November 2022
Peter Capaldi makes for a very creepy sinister character indeed, as does the boy with no emotions.

I loved the way this show told it's story, it never felt slow or rushed. And I didn't really know exactly where it was going until the very end. All the cast were excellent.

There seems to be too many shows out there today that are predictable or treat their audience like idiots, thankfully The Devil's Hour is neither. The show asks you to follow what is happening and leaves you to figure it out as it progresses. At times it had the feel of supernatural dread to it, at other times a clever whodunnit.

Absolutely Top Notch
herecomesjuan30 October 2022
Some reviewers on here wouldn't know a good series if it slapped them on the face! This is a quality thriller all the way through that keeps you guessing and wraps it up with a decent ending. People say you have to pay close attention, surely if you are putting on a series or a film while doing the hoover or got your head stuck on Social Media on your phone then it's not worth watching, is complete trash and requires the attention span of a 3 year old.

Of course you need to pay attention to the detail and concentrate on it to be able to enjoy it and not get lost in the story this is telling. Pay attention as it actually requires some concentration on your part! As long as you do that, and stop looking at your phone at the same time for 5 seconds you might actually enjoy a good series for a change. Not going to give it away but it draws you in and doesn't let go till the very end. Brilliant!

Stay for the ending as it all makes sense, great story
rosemaryandthyme30 October 2022
WOW just finished this and can't stop thinking about it. It's a LONG time since a series has had this effect on me. A fantastic story and everything ties up in the end (as much as fiction can). Acting is exceptional, especially from Peter C and the child who plays Isaac. Be aware that the first few episodes won't make much sense, they keep moving time frames, certain characters come and go, situations change drastically and so on. Another reviewer has suggested to watch intently and not to scroll lazily at your phone. I concur, you really have to watch and take notice so as not to get confused and also to enjoy the wrap up in the last episode when it all falls sadly into place. I really loathed one character and can't say who without spoiling it but I'm sure you will know who I mean when you watch. I feel this series deserves a second viewing which I plan to do. Congratulations to all involved and especially to the writer/s for thinking outside the box.

Very well made, tense thriller. Pay attention!
mazbutt-1604128 October 2022
I'll keep this review brief!

I've just finished binging this series and i can honestly say i was pleasantly surprised! It's a perfect mix of eerie and intriguing.

Directing and acting is top notch and the story is very engaging and intricate right from episode 1. There's plenty of unexpected twists and turns as the story develops but you must pay attention!

There are small details in each episode that are very relevant so bear that in mind before starting this series.

9/10 for me. One of the better tv shows released this year. Definitely worth a watch if you like a good psychological thriller!

Pay close attention
thejdrage28 October 2022
This is not your put it on and do some cleaning around the house series. If you're not paying attention, well, you will be lost. I was meandering a bit and I actually did pay attention - I rewound a bit here and there.

I watched specifically because of Peter Capaldi - Who can resist a retired Doctor Who??

Actor Benjamin Chivers, who plays Issac, the young son, is nothing short of incredible. There's one scene where I found myself with my hand over my mouth and I had stopped breathing. This child was brilliant in his delivery.

This is NOT a series I would usually watch. It seems to be a concept that I have seen before, but can't name the program. I don't think this one was particularly well done, but it is very entertaining --- especially for the week before Halloween.

Enjoy! But only if you pay close attention.

The real gem is the last episode, which itself easily deserves 10 stars!
Erik_Surewaard29 October 2022
You are going to have to watch the first five episodes - which I each rate with a decent 7/10 - to be able to watch the real gem: i.e. The sixth episode. That sixth episode is just so extremely awesome, that it alone deserves a 10/10.

It is the first time that I have ever watched such an "assymmetric" show. The difference between episodes 1-5 and 6 is just huge! And after seeing episode 6, you will also appreciate more all preceding episodes.

Averaging the different scores (5 episodes of 7 stars and 1 episode of 10 stars) will give this show a score of 7.5/10. Rounding this, gives an IMDb rating of 8 stars.

But please do understand that the real gem is the last episode. And you will have to watch all the episodes before it to really understand what is happening in episode 6.

And a half
Headturner1129 October 2022
Which is high for me. I should of gave it an 8 considering what's been being released lately! Finally the UK may be getting back to their roots of making some of the best crime/thriller shows! This one is well done, all of the acting is good etc. I didn't love it tho. Like I'm not sitting here thinking about parts today or any one character( that usually happens tho rarely when I love something) but never the less it was good! Kind of similar to Shinning girls but better. I really liked Alex Ferns and I like Peter Capaldi in most everything he does. I just wished we had learned more abut the boy and the ending wasn't the greatest but it was a good series to spend the evening on and a good creepy Halloween watch as well!

A delightful Surprise
apixielife29 October 2022
Come on now, most of us movie watchers have seen just about everything. Its so lovely to have a thriller that keeps you guessing. That doesn't get lost in what message or idea they are sharing.

I did not like Capaldi as the doctor. He was angry all the time. With that being said I do try not to judge based on someone's last gig. So happy I did that as this was fabulous and Capaldi was brilliant in it. I only have about 30 min to go and I am done and wow, I binged it not meaning to but I couldn't shut it off lol. Wonderful cast and writing, scenery was stunning.

Of course I will not put in spoilers but this just made my Friday night happy. It was spooky, had a great plot that didn't snooze nor confuse. You only need to keep your mind open and watch carefully. Getting up to many times for laundry etc and you will miss things meant to be seen. Hats off to you all for a beautifully well done show.

I only took away a star because I wouldn't re-watch it. Not that it isn't re-watch worthy but I tend to only re-watch happy happy movies. So please do not let the missing star deter from any part of the show. It was a ten for sure.

One last thing, in the doctor Peter Capaldi looked so tired (and angry) but here he looks so much younger, more alive. No clue why but take a bow Mr Capaldi, well done :)

Gripping then it got lost
Steve4612 January 2023
Stayed with it for 5 episodes holding on to a futile belief that the deliberately disjointed story line would be rewarding for the patient viewer in episode 6. There is a good story in there but it gets lost in the screen gimmicks and editing. Peter Capaldi was decent. The others weren't quite. Patel was so boring that he made his character superfluous. Jessica Raine's presence and subsequent events in a police interview room was a stretch of credibility. Then the final explanation of how it tied together was so lame, inexplicable and unbelievable that I was actually mad. A limp screenplay and goofy directing suggests a rating of 6 is generous.

Binged this in 2 days, couldn't stop watching

Warning: Spoilers
I echo what others have said, episodes 1-5 are great, Ep 6 is insanely good and very different. Cipaldi plays his part so well that you genuinely want to see more of him/character beyond this series. In a weird way he's almost like a morally shady "superhero"with the things he is able to do.

Love a TV show with this level of depth to it, go read up on theories after I finish then I watched the last ep again.

  • all the acting was stellar
  • amazed they managed to squeeze all the different genres in over 6 episodes

So many great questions in my mind!!

  • "Mike" is a character you want to hate for the way he treats Isaac. There should be retribution on him during the final flash forward/back/sideways (???)
  • still wasn't clear why Gideon wanted to make Lucy "remember" and potentially reset her path going forwards.

  • were those flash forwards at the end or parallel "paths" where you see Lucy catching Gideon
  • I like having answers but a little bit of ambiguity adds to the mystery
  • where did Isaac go at the very end, Lucy ended up in burning building but in different??

  • bring back Gideon!!

Don't Give Up - it will finally make sense
vovers112 April 2023
The Devil's Hour is initially very frustrating to watch implementing so many cheap horror film party tricks loud bangs and flash backs that I was close to ditching the show. No really inspiring performances but always a hint of something better kept me hooked until finally what seems initially like just a cheap horror flick becomes worth the wait as the SciFi part of the script reveals itself very late in the game and the real twists and turns of the tale weave themselves into the story.

Here's to hoping that the series will continue and explore and expand on this theme so don't give up if the first half seems just like a typical slasher movie as there is a lot more behind the tale.

Ludicrously long-drawn-out and utterly unconvincing
jennachaplinca5 January 2023
Please do not waste several hours of your life watching this. While the plot, when finally revealed, is interesting, it is rushed into a resolution missing all kinds of needed exposition.

As another reviewer has mentioned, there is maybe 2 hours of story here and yet the makers have stretched it out beyond all reasonableness. Endless 'weird stuff' happens over and over; like, get to the point, please!

It also wallows in the usual silly clichés: e.g characters make dumb choices that put themselves in danger.

Even though it does involve a police investigation, it does so in a way that you would never ever see in reality.

I say again, do not waste your time; let my wasted time save yours!

Absorbing mind bender
benaggie31 October 2022
I was expecting a halfway decent horror series, with maybe some psychological drama thrown in, but what I got instead was a near perfect blend of crime drama, horror, thriller, and science-fiction. To have the guts to try and blend all of these genres together and end up not giving too much time or too little of one or another was impressive. Seamlessly blended.

The story was completely and absorbing As a horror/crime series aficionado I've seen just about all of the best movies and series so it takes a lot to impress and surprise me, and let me just say I was impressed and surprised.

(10/10) for the child actor that played the Isaac. He was perfect.

Extraordinary
TheOther_29 October 2022
Finally another Amazon highlight that forces you to binge the miniseries! The Devils Hour shows how important a selected ensemble is. Not only Jessica Raine and Oscar winner Peter Capaldi shine in the nerve-wracking 6 episodes. Every role, no matter how small, is extraordinarily well cast.

No spoilers: if you liked the movie The Butterfly Effect, you will love this series!

A series with many philosophical questions: where do we come from, where are we going and do we really have free will?

Certainly, the speed at which the story is told is not for everyone, as you have to stay focused on the series. But you are rewarded with an in-depth story.

A "7" with reservations
vincentlynch-moonoi8 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I just finished this 6 episode British mini-series. I have mixed feelings.

It's another example of when I think they take a story and need to do tighter editing. 6 episodes of an hour each...could have been done in 5. This seems very common nowadays.

Another problem is flashbacks and flashforwards. I'm often not a fan of them, but in this particular story, you have to have them. Usually I feel there are way too many in some productions. Here they were too incomplete. It would have been better to have more complete flashbacks and flashforwards, even if it gave the ending away sooner. I felt that I was left too much in the dark.

But then, feeling a bit let down, the final episode was a humdinger! Once it all came together...fascinating story.

The acting...mixed. Nikesh Patel, playing a police detective, is fantastic; he is a fine actor in everything he does. Jessica Raine, the female lead...I can't tell if I just dislike her character here, or if I dislike her as an actress. It's the first thing I've seen her in. Peter Capaldi is creepy...as he should be for the story...creepy while ultimately being a tad bit of a sympathetic character. Benjamin Chivers as the little boy...appropriately weird. Phil Dunster...again...am I disliking the character (for sure) or the actor? Dunster's character is wholly unlikable. Barbara Marten and Alex Fern...did well.

So the question is: do I recommend this? Yes, with reservations that you've got to be quite patient for the big payoff.

What an ending
demaym13 November 2022
The last episode is one of the best finales to a mini series I have ever seen. It's commonplace for writers to flake out these days and use the old 'interpret it yourself' ending as a guise for not knowing how to end their story properly - that's certainly not the case here.

I'll keep this review short and sweet. At the start I wasn't sure where this was all going and didn't quite have the patience to carry on. I left it for a week or so and came back and was certainly glad I did. Things really start to escalate mid-series. If you're reading this after watching the first episode, I'd say carry on. The finale blew me away on many levels. Enjoy.

Interesting ending, but too many things still don't make sense
cliew5473-107-9179257 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This series does a good job of building up the mystery and keeping you wondering what exactly is going on. However, once I finished the final episode and "the big secret" was finally revealed, I realized that there were still too many things that didn't quite make sense. For example, at the end, it shows the neighbor family (with the little girl) being burned by a fire in what had been Lucy's house in a different life and in a timeline where Isaac had never existed because Lucy had never had him. But it was Isaac who had started the fire, so why would this other family have also experienced a fire in a life where Isaac doesn't even exist in order to start a fire in that house? Who started that fire? It just doesn't make sense. Secondly, if everyone's lives "loop" as the man at the end states, then why doesn't everyone experience "deja vu" as strongly as Lucy does, or in other words, why doesn't everyone have flashbacks of their other lives like she does? The police guy certainly doesn't, and nor did his partner. So why did Lucy have them so strongly? Again, this film does a good job of building up the mystery and keeping you waiting for the resolve, but it still leaves too much that doesn't really make sense, in the end.

Good story let down by having the main characters be such a chore to watch
HJKFCMCD9 November 2022
You know all those shows with likeable characters and enjoyable plot lines? Those fools!

Here we take a different approach. What if the characters were all miserable and insufferable to watch? Wouldn't that be better?!

If you can struggle through the chore that is the main family's life there's an interesting story under there, but believe me, it is a fair old slog to keep motivated. It's not one you'll binge, it's one you'll grind through in several sittings because you want to know what the underlying story is, interspersed with something a bit more cheery.

Worth a watch, would have been better half the length, needlessly hard going.

Finally!
kkmgirl-448-1119886 November 2022
Finally something GOOD on TV! Fascinating, mind-bending and clever plot (perfect for sci-fi nerds like me), excellent pacing and cinematography, great acting, and just a much-needed wild ride after slogging through countless drivel (couldn't finish Inside Man for that reason). Thank you and pleeeaaasee bring us more! I was sad it ended so quickly, but appreciate the beauty of brevity and not beating a dead horse like so many bloated series being made now. I'm hoping the network bigwigs take note that viewers are generally intelligent and require quality entertainment a little more often than what's being fed to us. On that note, bring back OA!!

Great until the finale
memefactory1 November 2022
An truly excellent series, and with an exceptional performance by Jessica Raine, who manages to breathe life into otherwise hackneyed tropes (and also Alex Ferns). Having said that, it all falls part with the final episode, where we realize that many of the details that were tantalizing are simply that - distractions and red herrings to keep us engaged. A story doesn't necessarily have to conform to our world's logic, but it does need to fit into its own internal logic. And this one does not. Gaping holes, and frankly a lazy ending. It makes you wonder if there was supposed to be more but somehow budgeting constraints forced the series to be truncated. So, yeah - a bummer, in the final analysis.

Gripping, brilliant and worth a watch
Ronnie_mcdowell30 October 2022
Loved every bit of it. See some keek reviews but omg what a series. Full of suspense, guesswork and some great acting. Issac is fantastic. For a child of that age to be so good is brilliant. Nikesh Patel (Ravi) plays the roll unbelievably well and Peter Capaldi just speaks for himself. I was so engrossed through he whole series. Guessing and thinking. It has to be one of the best series I've seen on Amazon Prime in a long time. If anyone actually has bad to say they need to open their mind and get engrossed. Glad I watched it and it shows that there are still great shows out there being made. Especially British shows. A* for me.

Almost but not quite there.
TristanSilya2 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Needed more Gideon. Gideon was the BEST part of this series. Unfortunately, we mainly only get to see him in the last episode.

The show felt extremely long. It was hard for me to get invested because none of the characters were relatable or interesting. They were all pretty annoying. The main character, Lucy, is constantly throwing a fit and cheats on her husband without a single ounce of guilt or remorse.

Nothing made sense (I know it wasn't supposed to until the end) but it didn't have a good reason for you to follow it. It was just thrown in randomly. There needs to be at least some cause or reason, a more probable and relatable motive.

Yea, a boy disappeared but he was also extremely strange and never really does anything. I developed zero attachment to him and when he disappeared I felt nothing.

The shows really picks up on the last episode when Gideon revealed everything. The suspense and execution were more interesting than the actual phenomenon. It was a bit of a letdown because it wasn't anything consistent. It was more like Marvel type sorcery involved.

Apparently some people can relive lives and retain their memories and apparently some can travel between or see and interact with other timelines and parallel worlds. Decent idea but it would have been better if Gideon were the protagonist!

A series based on Gideon trying to fix his past and future by living different lives and having to deal with unforeseen change of events is way more interesting then Lucy, her weird kid, and her affairs.

A waste of 6hours of my life
pkacz-997362 November 2022
I began watching this because of the great reviews. I have no idea what others watched but it can't be this. This show, the lack of plot and the worst ending ever. I've never watched a show before that was so slow, I guess I thought it would come together in the end, but I was terribly wrong. The only decent thing was the acting of the little boy. Never again will I trust reviews of a new show. I can only guess they were fake to get people to watch it to the end, but trust me... DON'T.. just no...I'm going to just yammer like the show did to get enough words in here so it will post. Blah...blah blah.

Excellent
wolflorien-8116229 October 2022
This great series reminded me of when I first saw 'Life on Mars'. It has the character engagement and slow burn of those great stories. Benjamin Chivers, as the young boy is phenomenal, a great little actor.

The plot isn't difficult to follow if you have a basic grasp of the idea of fate perhaps, but it doesn't lay the whole thing out for you at the beginning like a kids book. - It keeps you guessing and re-evaluating. That is one of the reasons I found this so refreshing. The series slowly pulls all these disjointed pieces together for a great finale.

Excellent writing, great acting, absolute binge worthy material. Highly recommended!
