Outstanding, sensitive story
NanoFrog8 April 2023
This is a sensitive, beutifully produced story about the Calbria gangsters, a mafia-like organization that is very powerful and rich, spreading itself intelligently throughout Eurpose. The dominant clans are paranoid and possessive of their women and treat them very bady, often violently, according to this film. The ladies involved are all stunning, fine actors. The entire cast is sterling. The photography and the wrting is also beautiful. A unique solution to getting inside these criminals is the idea of inducing the women to come forward to end their violent servitude and provide better lives for their children, and it works very well. Based upon true events, this is a unique and powerful insight into the Italian criminal tradition, that continues to this day. Along the way we see fantastic photography of the calbria region and its diverse, different lifestyles. This a beautifully done story, important not just for women, but for society.

totally compelling and unique drama
kluismans16 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is the true story of three women who are born into the 'Ndrangheta, a Calabrian criminal organisation . They live within the confines of these groups, brutalised by its code which limits women to a life of total subjugation. Denise is 18. Her mother Lea has testified against her husband in order to give her daughter a chance at life. She is killed by Denise's father. Denise must decide whether to testify against her father. Giesy has known nothing more than a life within her criminal family. Like most women in her community, she was married off at 16, her husband has left her with three children when he is imprisoned. Now 30, she is an active participant in crime, collecting the dues for the family and organising its operations. But she is bound into its system which are oppressive. She has an elicit affair despite knowing that the consequences of this risk her life. She too must decide whether to testify against her family. And then there is Maria. Maria like Giesy was married very young. Her husband is also in prison. Still a young woman, Maria lives with her parents and three children a prisoner in her home. Any whiff of freedom is quenched by her family. She is beaten for the slightest hint of rebellion. She too must decide whether to remain in this abusive set up.

Essentially this story does not dwell particularly on the 'Ndrangheta's crimes, nor their reach. It focuses upon the real struggle these women face as they turn their back on their families and all that they know to reach out for some glimpse of freedom. It's an astonishing watch as you feel their dilemmas. They will lose everything that they know, their families, their homes their livelihoods. They will be hunted and live in fear of their lives, watching at every turn for what they feel is inevitable the avenging bullet. Their love for their children is both an impulse to break free, in order to give them a better life, but also an anchor to keep them from breaking free, as their children desperately crave to return to their normality. The series is an astonishing achievement as it reveals quite how these remarkable women did indeed challenge their system and face the consequences of doing so.

I do hope everyone watches this, because it certainly brought home to me quite how difficult living within this community would be.

intriguing Italian crime drama starring Gaia "My Brilliant Friend" Girace
paul-allaer20 April 2023
As Episode 1 of "The Good Mothers" (2023 release from Italy; 6 episodes of about an hour each) opens, we are reminded this is "based on a true story". It is "January 3, 2010" and a bomb explodes at the local prosecutor's offices in Calabria to send a message to the new prosecutor looking into the Ndrangheta mafia. In a parallel story line, we are introduced to Lea and her daughter Denise who are on their way to reunite with their husband/father. Before we know it, Lea mysteriously disappears... At this point we are less than 15 minutes into Episode 1.

Couple of comments: this TV mini-series jumps back-and-forth in time but most of it plays out between 2008 and 2011. If you wonder where in Italy Calabria is, it is the "toe" of the Italian boot, across from where Sicily is located. Calabria is remote, isolated, and mostly poor. But that didn't stop the local mafia, called Ndrangheta, from doing what the mafia does: they intimidate, extort, abuse, and kill people, all for the mobsters' financial gain. The women within the mobster families are treated with disdain and disrespect, and worse. Despite the long odds and lack of resources, several of them decide to stand up. This is tense and at time difficult watching. But it makes for compelling viewing. This is a no-star cast, except of course Gaia Girace, one of the two stars from "My Brilliant Friend". Girace is still only 20, and she has limitless potential. Can't wait to see what she'll do next. PLEASE NOTE: I watched this in the original Italian version, and for whatever reason in several long stretches, the subtitling's timing was off, as in: the subtitles showed about a second too soon, and hence didn't completely synchronize with the voices. Super annoying.

The first 2 episodes of "The Good Mothers" premiered at the Berlin film festival earlier this year to immediate acclaim. I read a nice review of this mini-series in the New York Times, and that was good enough for me to check it out. It's currently streaming on Hulu, and I watched all 6 episodes over 2 evenings. If you are in the mood for a tense Italian crime drama from a female perspective, I'd readily suggest you check this out, and draw your own conclusion.

Excellent series and superb acting
catnapbc2 June 2023
I join other reviewers here who found this a compelling and emotionally intense series. Seen from a woman's perspective, the brutality, sexism and hypocrisy of the various mafia-type organizations that still permeate Italian society is both revealing and frightening. The bravery, strength and determination by all these women to remove themselves from their shackles is beyond words. What is clear is that the so-called 'honour' code and 'rules' that these bastards abide by are only adhered to when it suits them. What's truly laughable is how they portray themselves (the men mostly) as family-oriented, Catholic upholders of virtue and a 'way of life' that seems little changed from the Stone Age. Top-notch series and a must-watch!! Bravo those women who defy this system!!!

Please help me out
frzptgs29 July 2023
I'm loving this series so far Visually beautiful and an incredible story So interesting to see this kind of story from a mainly female point of view I also like that they haven't so far fallen into the trap of glorifying the lifestyles and personalities of the characters as super human but rather portray them as the run-of-the-mill thugs that they are Also loving hearing the Calabrian language even though it means watching subtitles But will someone please tell me how to find the recording of the hauntingly beautiful song that is sung at the end of each episode? Can't find it on any of the sites that claim to have the soundtrack Sounds like an Italian lullaby? Lyrics include' in Bocca al Lupo ' but songs with that title aren't it.

Intense, dramatic and great
martinpersson9713 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This TV show is definitely a standout in the year, and one of the better shows at that - showcasing some incredible actors, cinematography and writing.

Every actor involved gives it their all, and you will recognize many of them if you are up to date. They all do an incredible and career defining job, and truly help sell the incredible script.

The cinematography, cutting and editing is very unique and it is all around very beautiful and interesting to look at.

Overall, the suspense is very high, and the pacing is ever tight and very intense.

Truly a great drama, that I will highly recommend to any lover of film, as one of the better series of the year!

Scary reality for three women born into mob families
annringart19 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Outstanding and frightful depiction of the violent life in terror three women are forced to live. All three are born into the Italian mob and pay a heavy price to break free. Worthy of binge-watching. The tyranny these women live under is worse than what I could imagine. It's too close to reality and the true endurance of the life of women in the mob. They all know the future awaiting their sons and daughters and can do nothing to stop the inevitable. I have seen plenty of tv-series and movies based on the Italian mob. This series is, although dramatised, blunt and coarse. You cannot shy away from their life in terror.

A Gripping Series Unveiling the Harsh Reality of Women in Europe
hovigisg18 May 2023
The Good Mothers, a riveting series available on Disney+, offers a thought-provoking narrative that sheds light on the unsettling truth that women in Europe still face significant challenges and struggles, even in the 21st century. Breaking away from the idyllic depictions often seen in movies, this show dares to expose the grim realities that exist beyond the surface.

Set in Europe, The Good Mothers introduces us to a group of courageous women who find themselves entangled in a complex web of organized crime, corruption, and social oppression. The series unflinchingly portrays the harsh realities faced by these characters, revealing the stark contrast between the idealized imagery often presented in films and the harsh truth that permeates real life.

One of the most striking aspects of The Good Mothers is its ability to challenge preconceived notions about the safety and security enjoyed by women in Europe. By delving deep into the characters' lives, the show highlights the vulnerabilities and dangers they encounter in their daily routines. Whether it's navigating treacherous relationships, fighting against systemic injustices, or facing the terrifying consequences of crossing powerful figures, the series portrays a side of Europe that is far from the rosy picture painted in mainstream media.

The strength of The Good Mothers lies in its realistic portrayal of the characters' experiences. The show doesn't shy away from exploring the various forms of violence, discrimination, and oppression that persist in European society. It showcases the multidimensional nature of the struggles faced by women, emphasizing the need for systemic change and a collective effort to create a safer and more inclusive society.

The performances in The Good Mothers are exceptional, with the talented cast bringing depth and authenticity to their roles. The writing is compelling, successfully weaving together intricate storylines that keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Each episode serves as a reminder that the fight for gender equality is far from over, and that women continue to face numerous obstacles in their pursuit of a better life.

While The Good Mothers highlights the dark underbelly of Europe, it also instills hope and emphasizes the resilience of its characters. The series serves as a call to action, urging audiences to confront the uncomfortable truths that exist within their own societies and work towards meaningful change. It reminds us that cinematic portrayals often fall short of capturing the full spectrum of human experiences, and that a closer examination of reality is necessary to create a fair and just world.

In conclusion, The Good Mothers is a gripping and eye-opening series that confronts the notion of women's safety in Europe. By presenting a stark contrast to the utopian portrayals often seen in movies, it provides a compelling narrative that underscores the challenges and struggles faced by women in the 21st century. Through its powerful storytelling and exceptional performances, the show serves as a reminder that life is not always as pink as depicted on the silver screen, and encourages viewers to question the status quo and strive for a more equal and just society.

... good and important programming
bjarias21 November 2023
... very well done six-episode-series... brought to this production seeing Micaela Ramazzotti as part of it, although her onscreen time is rather limited the importance-impact of her character resonates throughout all six of the episodes

... majority of people outside the country in all probability know little about the influence of these organizations, although their significance is now being felt world-over... this terrific little series establishes a human element to this troubling story, bringing it to light as having repercussion on lives of all families involved

... could-will there be another series an interesting question.. the world can surely use more knowledge-information-regarding any way it can get it.

A must see
rosa_russo23 November 2023
A magnificent and tragic depiction of patriarchal society at its worst. Set in a Calabria poised between modernity and archaic rites and customs, the series is beautifully shot, convincingly acted, and keeps you on edge throughout the episodes.

The female portraits are depicted with finesse, both the heroines and those who unquestioningly accept the violent and dark world around them. A violence that is hardly ever shown, but which comes out overwhelmingly despite the portrayal of 'normal' lives.

An important story, in times when feminicide is a recurring theme in all the newspapers, certainly here we are talking about an extreme world, but the roots of a world hostile to women become terribly evident.

Snooze fest.
rufusmcd12 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
For one thing its way too long. It could easily have been done in three episodes. Moms in trouble and goes into witsec. The kids aren't happy and the dirt bag family is trying to shut her up or kill her or both. Even though its based on a true story its been done time and time again. Its more like a really slow soap opera than a limited series. Throw in a teenage romance and a lot of dingy sets and you could put it on daytime tv and fill the commercial breaks with ads for tide and Palmolive. To whoever made this please get to the point. Now, The Good Mothers the abridged version might not be that bad.

touching look behind the scenes of the mafia that sheds light on the role of the mother
Streaming-Kati18 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
With dark, sometimes melancholy images in a calm narrative style, we follow the fate of three women as they struggle to escape it. You get to know them all better and immerse yourself in their world, you feel the great pressure they are under because they are safe from nothing, manipulative family members, such as their own mothers, try to exert psychological pressure on the women. Especially if they have children, there are always threats to take them away.

The whole thing really gets to you (especially as this series is based on real events), the women manage to arouse my sympathy and I root for them to have the strength to win this battle. I was also touched by the recurring children's song. It is not clear until the end of the series whether they will make it or not. At the very end, there is information about what happened to all the "real" people via text overlays, which I always find very interesting.

No questions are left unanswered, you could say the story is finished with the 6 episodes.

------------- Conclusion: Worth seeing - This mini-series takes a look behind the scenes of the mafia family and sheds light on the fate of the women who work there for the welfare of their children. Very well realized and touches the heart, because it is often a hopeless struggle. Every mother will feel the burden and understand what (woman) is prepared to go through in the end.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Small spoiler from here on!

+++ It all begins with the disappearance of a mother who returns to her husband with her daughter. We then meet three women who were born into the most powerful mafia clan in Italy. They are oppressed, beaten and have to obey the family. Mostly the brutal husbands who stop at nothing. Each has her own fate, but you also want to know what happened to the mother from the beginning. This question is also answered at the end.

Interesting story, poorly told
qui_j24 August 2023
This series is interesting because of its theme. However, it's so poorly told that at times it just makes little sense. The editing is poorly done and destroys any continuity. Scenes seem randomly stuck together and when combined with a fluctuating timeline and gaps in the story, the viewer has to work out what is happening with the plot. The acting is good but after a while the constant staring by the lead actress, into space, or the sea, or just a building, becomes annoying. Overall, the series does hold one's interest and is engaging, but the lack of story continuity is just a poor way to deal with such an interesting theme.
