I think you people are missing the point
ChaChangenge17 July 2022
I think you people are missing the point.

No, it's not bad acting, or bad CGI or what ever you happened to whine about.

Yes, Moonies are strange and come across like annoying hippies who say and do strange things and behave like lunatics. That's the whole point! I think they play it rather well.

I agree, the angry pilot chick from Earth is extremely unlikable and behaves like sociopath. But that's the whole point - Earth is gone off the deep end! Everyone is probably like that or worst.

Why do expect them to have those same values like you have today? Behave like you do? Try traveling. Different cultures, different values, different social ques etc. And you do not even need to get off world.

Very few sci-fi books and films actually pay attention to this - people, situations etc have to come across a bit unusual or even awkward for us.

Put it like this, If you could time-travel 100 year back in time and behave the way you do today, everyone will think there is something seriously wrong with you. It works both ways.

Potential
rsmith-8166415 July 2022
I don't get all the hate. I was almost scared to watch after reading all the bad reviews. Well the trailer looked so good that I did try watching. I've watched the first 3 episodes and I'm enjoying it. It is a little slow but definitely holds my attention. I'm going to keep watching because it definitely seems to have potential. Give it a try!

Definitely not a 1 ???
cimorellisteve1 August 2022
Should you even be able to give a review if you only watch 5 minutes? The amount of 1 & 2's from people who don't even watch and actually hate sci fi sorta affects the overall rating. It's not Blade Runner but it's nowhere near this low of a rating.

Not Your Usual SF Show - an Underrated Surprise
pontram8 August 2022
From the premise to the setting and the characters, Moonhaven looked to me at first a bit ridiculous. I gave it a chance, though, and I began to like it. Very much. Acting and writing are decent, production values high. Sometimes the music is outstanding. The atmosphere and details (i.e. In language and thinking) were very captivating for me.

Don't let yourselves be deceived by the looks and behaviors of the mooners. It is only similiar to flower power and the likes. But it is a very different view of common life, and in this future the insights to this life is considered as the final salvation of earth, since the future teachers of humankind (and a mysterious AI) are nurtured there, far away from any influence our violent, bubbling world could have on them.

That seems to be a very realistic approach to what is needed four our own salvation. It is a different perspective, maybe not as radical as here, or, maybe even more radical. However, it is inevitable that we soon will need salvation if our own history shall not turn out like that in this show.

Of course, the show is not perfect. There are a few cliches (evil people want to take power over this paradise) and some idlings, and at some rare points you may not fully know what's going on. But the biggest flaw is that this season ends just after 6 episodes...luckily, season 2 is confirmed.

I give it 8 points, which means "very good". It is worth watching and thoughtful, especially in our time, which grows increasingly egocentric and narcissistic.

I've only watched episode 1...
Broccolidwarf9 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
...but I have to ask (myself, since nobody in here can post an answer):

Why on earth (pun intended) are people being put into artificial sleep for a trip to the moon?

With 2022 technology that trip takes 3 days, so 200 years from now it's probably a single day... at the most.

I'm SO tired of Hollywood churning out sci-fi shows, where nobody has bothered to research even the most basic science, which ought to be a prerequisite for writing/producing sci-fi.

It leaves you with a feeling that the show is a complete waste of time, so I will be giving it an average 5 (because I have only watched one episode) and give up on watching the rest of the show..

Nonsensical storyline
supermellowcali9 July 2022
The cast is great. Being "woke" isn't the problem. It's a silly concept that doesn't make any scientific sense at all. If the SCIENCE isn't thought through, it's not scifi. It's fantasy. The entire premise that living on the moon would develop AI better or that it would somehow save the Earth or change society's behavior is too dumb to discuss further imo. The religious part is barf... and the police uniforms? No excuse.

Don't complain about the lack of originality if you won't give original shows a chance
repomonkey28 August 2022
I'll admit I was surprised by the first episode of this show and I nearly stopped watching at that point. But there was a certain vibe to it that kept me on the hook and I persisted.

This is one of the most original sci-fi shows I've seen in a long time and like many shows that have that unique flare to them, they are misunderstood. There's no way this series deserves its current score and I suspect that people who didn't give it a chance would mark it up if they watched all six episodes.

Yes, there's some weird ideas on the show, but so what? And yes, the 'mooner' speak weirdly, but it's set several hundred years in the future - if you were to listen to someone from the year 1800, they'd sound pretty funny too.

The show has a great plot that makes you slowly invest in the characters. There are some great concepts in here too, based around the all-powerful I/O computer. The CGI is top notch too.

In short I don't suppose they'll renew this because it's not getting the numbers they need. And that will be s a shame because everyone always whinges about the lack of originality in TV shows and then when something original does come along they think it's weird and don't watch it.

Anyway - it gets a big thumbs up from me. Great concept, well executed, well scripted and acted. I just wish there was more effort to push the margins like Moonhaven does.

Why?
Athanatos1738 July 2022
My takeaway from 2 episodes of this show is that there must be very few talented writers working in the North American entertainment industry.

Horrible pacing, the acting was sub par, the writing was simply trash but the visual effects were somewhat decent.

Another complaint I have that is not limited to this show is scenes showing men fighting women and the women winning or withstanding extreme impacts. Impressionable women will possibly take this to mean that a woman can stand up to a man in a physical confrontation which will end in disaster. In this particular instance Joe Manganiello is 6ft5 fighting a woman that is 5ft4 at most. One hit would mean fractures at the very least yet we got this laughable confrontation.

All in all the trend of bad productions continues with very few new movies or shows being good.

Watch at your own peril, as this will put you to sleep fairly quickly.

great sci-fi world building and intriguing story
cherold3 September 2022
Wow, a lot of people seem to hate this, and I'm going to say something about that, but first let me just talk about how much I like the series.

In Moonhaven, humans have completely trashed the earth. To try and save the planet they installed an advanced AI on the moon which moon colonists work with to both create technology to heal the earth and to create a new societal approach to keep man from continuing his destructive ways.

This utopian moon colony is seriously hippy-dippy. People learn elaborate group dances to commemorate good and bad events and the job of police is not to solve crimes (the AI can do that) but to help people heal from the trauma of violence.

The creators of this show really thought through this world. You can argue about whether this tribal hippy thing is what an A. I. would create, but if you think about the forces that make man so destructive it actually seems like a pretty reasonable approach. And the show has detailed social structures, rituals, and language changes. (It also at times has an odd medieval-ish quality to it.)

The series begins just before the moon colonists are sheduled to come to earth and begin the healing process. But things aren't that simple. A woman is murdered. Her earther sister (beautifully played by Emma McDonald with a dry, Zendaya-like cynicism) is a pilot who happens to have come to the moon just then. Soon there's more violence. The genial police begin to realize there's more going on than their AI has solved (or told them). Meanwhile there are political conflicts that could bring down the earth-healing plan.

The first episode begins at a leisurely pace made up for with its originality, but soon there are a lot of twists and turns and things really start moving.

So, great sci-fi, world building, a compelling mystery, political intrigue. What's not to like?

For a lot of people on IMDB, the answer is ... everything! This series has a ton of 1-star ratings, and it's very puzzling to me.

Now, one thing that can kill a good show's ratings are anti-"woke" folk downvoting, but from the reviews it doesn't seem that's what's happening here, even though its diverse cast and powerful women are what often triggers these people.

But a lot of the criticisms don't make much sense. For example, some say the show is "cliched and predictable" yet those same people complain about the bland cliched utopia which means they don't understand that a utopia in sci-fi almost invariably is rotting underneath. Some people find the female lead unlikable, but she's a classic anti-hero who represents the earther brutality the mooners are supposed to heal, so why *wouldn't* she be abrasive? Some people say the series is slow moving and yet some say it's not as good as the movie Dune which moved like paint drying.

I feel part of the issue is expectations for sci-fi. For some, sci-fi is all about the CGI and the epic mythmaking. These are the people who want Star Wars and Terminator and don't understand the appeal of an Ursula Le Guin. Building an intricate world is, for them, not sci-fi, because it's not viscerally exciting. For me, though, it's intellectually exciting.

I'm not saying people have to like the show, but the critics are being ridiculous. In my life I've given maybe 2 series a 1-star rating, yet half the people here give it a 1 and say that the acting and writing are incompetent, which is not a reasonable or sensible critique. If someone finds it a little too slow, or finds the premise unconvincing, or just doesn't like the characters, that's their prerogative and there's no right and wrong in personal taste. But this level of antagonism is just ... weird.

This is why I'm honestly wondering if perhaps the anti-woke brigade is simply getting more strategic and trying to downvote shows without showing their hand so obviously. Because there's really nothing in this series that should reasonably be making people so mad unless they utterly hate diversity and strong women and hippy-dippy utopias.

But I can't ascribe beliefs to critics that they aren't themselves claiming, so perhaps it's something else. It just makes no sense to me.

In short, it's a great story, great sci-fi world building, fun characters, and a nice mix of drama, humor, action, and intrigue. I highly recommend it.

Kept me watching.
seamailtaz11 July 2022
The negative reviews are very strange for this show. I found it kept my interest and I am keen to follow where it leads. Silly arguments about what is and what is not science fiction are irritating and lead nowhere. I will continue to watch as it is intriguing.

Bring Talent Back Into Business
Tweetienator7 July 2022
Sometimes it looks like people who have no talent (or not much) are flooding the movie business - writers, actors, directors, cam-guys, (hopefully the caterer knows what he's doing) whoever, the result is a movie or show like Moonhaven. The story is a blend of overused ideas and cliches, the production of low quality, the effects bad, the acting improvable (and my phrasing is tender here), but we got a diverse cast, we got climate change, we got a woman who will beat 'em all against all odds and save the day, sorry, the world and moon, the whole galaxy... I really fear the days when people who are told constantly by their parents that they can do everything they want (like producing a show, writing a script, act, make whatever art) actually are involved in developing and building bridges, skyscrapers, planes and nuke factories. The death toll will be impressive - Doomsday, I hear you come...

Deserves much higher rating
ian-dodkins30 July 2022
A well made (special effects perfect) amd acting top notch. Really love 2 main leads and the police are both amusing and interesting in the way they operate completely differently to what you'd expect. Those criticising the science must live in a dream world.. like all good science fiction, the science is not real but a cohesive reality has been created. Absolutely loved the first episode and completely drawn in.

My recommendation: watch 1 and see how you feel. So, some don't like it but I think it's a gem.

Good
nigelowen28 July 2022
This is what Scifi is supposed to be. Explore the "impact of actual or imagined science upon society or individuals" with good story/mystery/events so it isn't a speculative documentary. I think there are low ratings here as Scifi seems to be associated lately with high octane action flicks dripping in CGI.

It's my type of show but no
AfricanBro13 July 2022
I like futuristic sci-fi series so this was right down my alley. The premise of the show is decent at best, on par with most shows like it and better than a few, but that's about it. The acting is slightly better than the dialogue but the dialogue's horrendous, one that thinks it's better than it actually is, so that doesn't say a lot about the acting. There's a lot of what's supposed to be witty or funny comments but none of them have the desired effect and come of pretentious and over-compensatory. The graphics aren't that great either, slick and futuristic but you can tell it's cgi so it looks. It doesn't seem believable too(yes I know it's sci-fi) like the tech exists to build an inhabitable community on the moon with an AI computer that can read minds and solve climate change, all this made from wood and natural resources but a trip to the moon still needs to be manually flown and takes days? But as I said, the premise of the show is okay as far as the genre goes. It's not a show I'd recommend but might keep watching because I like the genre and I don't like leaving things halfway, I always try to find something I like but I don't think it's worth a watch unless you're a really big fan of the genre and looking for something new, and even then you'll probably still get disappointed.

The first time I tried to watch "Firefly" I didn't like it, now it is a classic.
barbwho5 August 2022
Why? They talked funny, they cursed in Chinese and I had trouble understanding what was going on. Of course it was happening hundreds of years from now. Now it is a classic and an inspired science fiction show. It was original and unique. So is "Moonhaven". The "moonies" do act and talk different though the "earthers" talk more "normal". But wouldn't people in a hundred years talk different than us, have different ways of saying things. Give this a chance; it is unique and different. I also didn't like "The Expanse" at first because they "talked different".

Nope
NyteLynx14 September 2022
Remember those filler episodes of Star Trek TNG where the crew would beam down to some strange planet inhabited with a closed-minded, ignorant human or human-type society (see TNG Episode "Angel One") that all dressed in lame "futuristic" clothing that was nothing more than basic geometrical cloth gowns and the men were clueless peons ruled by some power hungry, often female dork? Or there would be a society of people living under ridiculous rules and were like ignorant children who didn't know any better (see TNG episode "Justice')? Enter 'Moonhaven'.

The Pilot....is about a Pilot. I am only reviewing the pilot episode because that's all I can stand.

We open to a flyover of a cliché CGI city that I suspect is supposed to tug at the strings of Blade Runner fans, but the buildings are so dark and muddy that the entire scene looks like something a 5th grader made for a school project. We also get a voice explaining how the humans have messed up the Earth and destroyed the climate and so on and so forth. I had to check to make sure I didn't lean on the remote and change the TV to MSNBC.

The story itself starts off with a clearly bitter, lonely, 'independent wo-man' character that could basically be switched out for nearly any character ever played by Michelle Rodriguez. She is an ex war pilot now moon taxi driver (and smuggler) who is tasked with transporting the closest looking to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez actress the casting director could find (seriously, search 'Amara Karan' and tell me I'm wrong) to the moon, because she is another strong, independent wo-man whom the future of humanity is depending on to survive. Her task is to go up to the moon, (where some AI has managed to terraform the land into a livable habitat for humans in a ridiculous short amount of time), and inform yet another strong, independent wo-man who is currently in charge of the 'council' that controls this new moon society, which is basically a commune of clueless numnuts who take a pill every time something makes them feel sad which will literally erase the sad feeling from their brain, because of course they would. They are the 3rd generation of people to be born on the moon, "Mooners", and yet they have zero idea how human society functions or how to actually solve problems using their brains. They are all implanted with a tracking device at the base of their spine so that Google....sorry...the "A I" (stupidly named IO, which is actually a moon of Jupiter). And the 'police' that live in this moon commune aren't actually police, but instead are just idiots in pajamas who show up at someone's house when something hurts their feelings and they, I sheet you not, do a dance to help them feel better then offer them a pill to erase the pain of the memory. And if you were wondering if the annoying hobbit cop was romantically involved with a male of a different race, then remember that this is a woke show.

Like Star Trek, the writers throw in a lot of "futuristic" tech that I assume is supposed to impress the viewer, but unlike Star Trek, what I've seen so far in Moonhaven is rather senseless and lame. First off, on their trip up to the moon, the AOC looking woman and her bodyguard have to go into this sort of deep cryosleep, when even with 20th century technology it only takes about 3 days to get to the moon from Earth. Why? And when dollar store Michelle Rodriguez is landing the ship, she pulls out these two metal rings, like those you could buy in a magic shop, attached to absolutely nothing, and awkwardly moves them around to guide the bad CGI ship into some water. Why? It was like a child sitting on his front step with his hands in the air pretending to fly a fighter jet. The actress did the best she could with the scene, but there's only so much the cast can do with this horribly bland and laughably ignorant dialogue. I imagine she was thinking 'man, I hope my friends don't see this show'.

I won't 'spoil' anything else because some things are so bad they have to be seen to be believed. If a bunch of Greenpeace hippies who nobody has ever swiped right got together and decided to barely mask their agenda under the dim guise of senseless science fiction and gathered up a bunch of diverse B-grade actors and the most annoying hobbit to act it out, they would create Moonhaven, and create Moonhaven they did. It's interesting how the man who produced the 'interesting' 90's sitcom 'Dinosaurs', which sees it's final episode with the dinosaurs talking about how they ruined the climate before all dying because of it, has found his way here, 30 years later, producing this nonsense.

You'll see that a lot of people are giving this show a 10, but I can promise you that they are doing so for all the wrong reasons, and we really have reached a sad point in entertainment. They will praise a show simply based on the diversity of it's cast and disregard the rest. I imagine that many of those people have already said my review was not helpful just because it was not a 7 or higher and didn't even bother to read it. We have hit a point in time where any show or movie that has poor acting, poor writing, poor musical score, poor anything, and even poor everything, is apparently not allowed to be disliked If the majority of the cast is not white. It is quite pathetic. To all of the wokesters out there, the entire cast of this show could be switched out with 200 albinos that have spent the past 20 years living underground and the show would still be weak. If this thing were made 30 years ago, Mystery Science Theater would have riffed on, but in 2022 it's regarded as amazing by an entire generation that is just as ignorant and purposely-kept-stupid as the "Mooners" on this show. It's perfectly alright to dislike a bad film or TV show just for thinking it is a bad film or TV show. It's called an opinion and it's time people be allowed to have them again.

The issue isn't casting.
peziak8 July 2022
Do the people complaining about diversity honestly think that this show would suddenly be better with an all white cast? The issue is that the writing and the plot is completely lacklustre and nonsensical.

I have to wonder how it was greenlit. Because the storyline is a mess.

MeAtHome1511211 July 2022
I'd like to know what show you were watching and where so I can compare it to the show on AMC - we obviously watched different ones.

"Moonhaven" may not be the best there is on TV right now but it surely deserves a chance.

Is it a year of the worst shows?
Almost_Soldout7 July 2022
I do understand that there is massive competition with all of streaming services and each of them wanna have more and wider range than others but is there any quality control for projects? Are they giving a green light to any production, shows now? What a shame! It will ruin the industry itself and seems like we won't be having high quality content soon until people stop watching shows like this.

Interesting
AvidWatcher10114 August 2022
Cool concept. Not perfect but good actors, great visuals, and very watchable. I try the first episode of many series and usually am disappointed as they simply can't hold my interest. This one has me watching. I like the mystery and intrigue. Again, not perfect but interesting and worth a watch. Great to see Dominic Monaghan on screen again!

As for 'not perfect', I have one small issue. This is supposed to be a relatively small population closed from the rest of the world (earth) for over 100 years. They all speak English. By now they should share the same accent, but the accents are quite varied and some very strong. Even within fiction/fantasy, things shiuld make sense.

Better Than Other Reviews Let On. It Does Meander A Bit But...
SnowCrash-11387 August 2022
...It Is A Detective Mystery After All, (essentially), and an interesting one at that, despite the pacing. Visually it's very well done. The acting is average, has a few high points, but not great. Oddly enough, although unintentional, it works very well in many ways (or could) as a "Deep-Past/Deep-History" prequel to Raised By Wolves. All of the kernel elements are there. Despite it not being a prequel to that very odd, interesting (& dark) but foolishly canceled series, thinking of it on some level as just that has made Moonhaven slightly more enjoyable for me than it otherwise would have been. For that reason I've given it a couple of xtra stars. Either way, it's not as terrible as some reviews make it out to be. Just quirky, and as mentioned, meanders a bit like many detective stories tend to do as they flesh out & find their footing.

doubt I will continue to watch this slow burn weird moon commune tv show
mabakerhtx7 July 2022
The visuals are great and the concept is ok. However, its a slow burn with low talking monotone characters. A strange creepy moon commune vs the "eathers" story. Its hard to follow because of the weird doublespeak and long dark scenes with no dialog. The script reminds me of a Shakespeare play and you have to pay close attention with the volume up to follow the plot. The trailer for the remainder of the season looks boring.

tuckerfurguy23 July 2022
I'm dumbfounded by the number of poor reviews posted here. They almost look to be posted by the same person, using separate email addresses. I can't understand what their/that person's legitimate gripe is. I find this show to be compelling, intriguing, exciting, other-worldly beautiful, well written, with first-class plots and acting. The sets and scenery are breathtaking. I look forward to each episode and if it was possible, I'd binge watch the entire season as fast a I could.

Only episode 1: Not so bad, not so wokey, bit dated
wisdomwasp9 July 2022
I'm going to try to be generous here, because I want to support new streamers trying new and different content, especially sci fi.

The show had an interesting concept, but CGI and sets were at times technically below what was needed. Think 90s sci fi shows. The 90s was a great Era for sci fi series, so that's not a bad thing, but the pacing felt a bit slow.

The characters were not bad either, most of the acting was quite good. The show has some reveals and mystery, but not enough to grab me early on. The only thing worth staying on for Is the developing relationship between the two main characters, Bella sway and Paul Sarno which is well done.

And the wokeness, I'm only one episode in, but I didn't see it. I'm pretty aware of even the subtle things they push, but besides the leadership being obviously all women (which I don't mind ) and some allusions to earth as the "mother" and open relationships, it's not that bad, certainly no Netflix *shivers*.

Dull and boring
ikata-4941719 March 2023
This show consists of characters staring off into nothing, taking forever to pick up a random item, and pointless long pauses in slowly delivered dialogue. Clearly, they do not have enough story to fill up the episodes, so they are dragging out every scene to make up for incompetent writing. Also, I'm bored with moody, snarky, condescending characters. Most characters in shows/movies these days are stuck in teen angst regardless of their age. This show is as dull and boring as almost everything else produced by the modern "entertainment" industry. We are living in the dark ages of entertainment.
