Amusing and heart-warming
steveinadelaide7 July 2022
NUDE TUESDAY is an amusing and heart-warming film about a suburban couple's journey to reconnect at a new-age retreat. Although the path is often embarrassing and difficult, the couple finds themselves and each other again. The performances by the entire cast are courageous given they spend most of their time naked on screen. The film's nudity is not erotic but contributes to the characters' vulnerability, which makes the characters even more relatable and touching.

NUDE TUESDAY is not a great movie but it's a fun one. It's the kind of movie that you watch with your partner and laugh at all the awkward moments. And while the film is light-hearted, it does deal with some serious themes like marriage, fidelity, and communication. Ultimately, NUDE TUESDAY is a feel-good movie about love and acceptance. So, if you're looking for a fun and quirky film to watch with your significant other, then I recommend NUDE TUESDAY.

OK

It was okay I personally would have preferred it in English. I don't mind some subtitled movies and series just not this one for some reason. I liked the storyline and the interabeyween characters.

Good fun

OK, there are no user reviews yet, so let's toss in a hasty first.

The screening of "Nude Tuesday" last evening (10 June 2022) at the Sydney Film Festival was (apparently) the world premiere of this Australian / New Zealand movie - "the first screening with an audience", we were told - and it went down well with a full house.

Its unique content makes this a film strongly boosted by a live audience (probably a different experience if seen at home on a TV screen) because there's an element of the audience being in on the act. Many laughs come from the subtitled "translations" of the gibberish spoken by actors that obviously bear no relation to what was in their minds while shooting. They are, if unwittingly, in on the act too. As is the audience. It's all quite theatrical.

The style is something like what was introduced long ago with "The Naked Gun" and "Airplane" movie series, in which the film itself plays a role in the comedy - the film you are watching gets sent up while you're watching it (we'll get to a potential problem arising from this a bit later).

Gag dubs are a sub-genre, such as in the (Australian) tradition of "Bargearse", in which the 1970s police series "Bluey" was given new life with absurd dialogue. Originally the plan had been to dub soap "The Young Doctors" instead - an obvious choice, as this should top any list of crap productions deserving mockery (as done way back with "Let the blood run free").

Astonishingly, it was actually carbon-copied for NZ TV, and in the decades since has become a local "Kiwi" institution - but I digress.

"Nude Tuesday" bears no relation to such soapy drivel, having very capable acting and staging, but the gobbledegook "translation" is a big part of the appeal.

Not all dialogue is gobbledegook. The many, many, many repetitions of "OK" to wrap a scene or moment can be emotionally effective - a resigned "it's never gunna get better, so" OK; or a wistful, hopeful "maybe it might" OK; or a "can hardly wait to try this" OK ...

This stylistic motif helps maintain feeling for the rather lost central wife character Laura amidst all the hilarity and mayhem, but that's where we get to the only small reservation I have about "Nude Tuesday".

After proceeding for quite a while as side-slapping tightly-staged comedy, suddenly we are with her as she wanders alone (well, except for a goat) contemplating the future of her marriage, as the previous manic energy evaporates.

Personal reflection on what life all means isn't inappropriate, of course - it's just that we've had so much glorious madcap fun that when the pace drops, we miss it.

After enjoying seeing domestic suburban tedium skewered, then delighting in having the baloney-bubble of earnest mystical, healing, find yourself, everything is good, be who you are, it was all meant to be (etc. Etc.) burst with such glee, suddenly, so late in the film, to be pondering the wife's fate, seems a little flat (along with a couple of later scenes as we near the end).

But ... let's be clear. This is a structural thing, not a performance thing. The actors (especially Jackie van Buren) manage to keep their characters real throughout the mad stuff, a very hard balance to pull off - perhaps the gold medal in playing characters more-or-less real while all around goes off the wall was achieved in "Wellington Paranormal", with which several key "Nude Tuesday" people have also been involved.

For all that (really rather geeky screen-biz consideration) "Nude Tuesday" is bloody good fun, and it's hard to imagine anyone not enjoying it.

Gave it a go, nup awful
fastpoose7 July 2022
Sorry 'art house' buffs this is not funny...

I thought Jemaine Clement may save it, but nope he's stuck with a trash 'script/?' and just isn't funny.

Tons of fanboy NZers may come to these sites with great reviews, but coming from a kiwi who loves comedy this is blood y awful.

Disappointing

Somewhere someone thought this was a great idea but it's an idea that quickly runs of of steam.

This is 30 minutes padded out to three times that length with barely any laughs.

Tired Formula in Gibberish
EdgarST29 April 2024
The original title card of this movie reads something like "Nøken Tisdøg" (the spelling of a few characters had to be omitted because IMDb do not accept them), which means "Nude Tuesday" in "Zobftanlik," a form of gibberish invented specifically for the film. "Nude Tuesday" is one of the rare films that uses an entirely fictional language for all its runtime. The title "Nûde Tuesdäy" (here I had to make another omission) is an English adaptation of the original, following the Zobftanlik resource of writing vowels and consonants according to different spellings in other languages.

This said, there is not much originality in this movie about a mature couple that goes to a retreat with a group of persons who want to add some "fire" to their sexual lives. I did not find it very funny, rather a bit boring, with tired situations you may have already seen in better films.

Gibberish at its best

Very enjoyable romp into the unspoken area of sexual therapy but avoids explicit sexual activity, stereotypical gurus and subtitles. I giggled all the way through it. A delightful slice of escapism.

fantastic piece of art
littleredbuzzkill12 June 2022
I liked it a lot. I was gonna stop there since i'm not great with words but for this to count it has to contain 150 characters so here we go.

I think the score was fantastic. The story was so beautiful. Our two leads were astonishing and the characters going on completely different journeys only to arrive at the same conclusion is brilliant. Idk i loved it.

Well there's my review. I hope you enjoyed it. Bye :)

Loved it!

This film was hilarious and very clever and unique. What a creative masterpiece! The acting was fantastic but the concept itself was so original and like nothing I've seen before. Such a brave piece of film making and just what I needed - a bellyful of laughs!

Original and funny
fogartybridget10 July 2022
'Nude Tuesday' is an original concept and film. In an age of so much 'reality' rubbish and formulaic Netflix murder mysteries, it is wonderful to see something unique and refreshing. The story, performances, gibberish and subtitle concept build a multi-layered comedy that is surprising throughout. I have recommended it to lots of friends as a light-hearted tonic for our current mileu.

Laughed & Cried !
sarah-427429 July 2022
I love this movie - fantastic acting, great soundtrack, touches a nerve (even though you probably wont want to admit it ), brave - and beautifully directed ... cant wait to see more films directed by Armagan Ballantyne. And Jackie von Beek and Damon Herriman just nail it ! Definitely worth seeing in a cinema.

Those who dare win
vndqyphj12 July 2022
Such a crazy idea, perfectly executed in acting, direction, art direction and writing it is elevated into something refreshingly new I've never seen before . I loved this so much. I guess this movie is polarizing for some people because it can be uncomfortable but that makes it all the funnier. If you're not a fan of Julia Davis or comedy that dares to push the boat out this may not be for you. Personally I loved the nuanced use of nudity, the human condition and particularly the farm animals. I'll wager my goat if this doesn't become a cult classic.

Genius Comedy
joancolemangisborne11 July 2022
The idea for this comedy is brilliantly executed. The acting, writing and directing is all round perfect and together creates something truly unique. I loved Nude Tuesday because not only was it very funny, it was a comedy like no other I had seen before. Julia Davis is fearless as usual. I highly recommend this but probably not for your average Mr Bean fans.

Julia Davis Isa Legend
ToshieGal8 July 2022
The one written by Julia Davis was fracking hilarious! What a comedic genius you are, lady! The other one depressed my soul. What happened to you Celia Pacquola? Did Chieng stifle your funny?

Awesome idea, well executed and made the audience think. I for one, was amazed at the difference a good script can make.

Utter Gibberish.
fostrhod14 April 2023
Nude Tuesday 2022, New Zealand movie or is it?

Bored couple go on a new age retreat to try to save their sexless marriage.

Filmed in New Zealand, dialogue sounds like it could have been made in Sweden or another Scandinavian country but in fact it is a made up language and is "gibberish" . This isn't a language like Antony Burgess's Clockwork Orange "Nadsat" which is written to create a future slang that in turn is timeless, which slang isn't, the dialogue is "gibberish". To help us mere mortals understanding the "gibberish" the subtitles are written by Julia Davis and at times clearly bare no relevance at all to the action taking place. She had a free hand to write her own subtitles as do the other subtitle's for other markets (not seen any other version so can't vouch for them) What of the film. It is utter "gibberish" it is so bad its great, or is it because its so funny that I think it is a bona fide original classic.

Comparisons , I'd liken it to Ben Weatley's Sightseers in its depiction or normality turned on its head., there's no killings but there's plenty of cock and fannies and full frontal nudity which, makes for some awkward situations, especially on Nude Tuesday , (Nude Day, League of Gentleman tribute if ever there was one) A wonderful and very funny film. And credit to the film makers for baring all for the movie. PS the "gibberish" also extends to the soundtrack with some lovely "gibberish" voiced classics. 10/10.

wacky downunder comedy, but poor husband
oparnie4 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
A little bit this comedy reminds me of Mike Myers comedy "The Guru", but much more crazy.

What makes my laughs stay low, though, is how the wife behaves and treats her husband.

She starts with being too busy to appreciate the little gift from her husband for their anniversary (she herself has nothing).

They go to the "couple's retreat", where she immediately falls for the guru, Björn.

Her husband already suspects this, and when the couple attempts to make love, after attending a number of meant to be funny group activities, he suddenly stops and accuses her of thinking of Björn, instead of him.

We now learn, that she already had a fling with her boss, a few months before, so his hesitations towards her have a reason.

Some more crazy couple retreat activities are shown, then, while wandering around by herself, Laura sees Björn alone, fishing, she talks to him and quickly starts making out with him, he grabs her tits, she gives him a handjob (within his trousers).

When he is done, he sends her away, leaving her unsatisfied.

After going back to her husband, she confesses, and her husband is now fed up with her, tells her to leave, and is sent away by the camp management for aggressive behavior.

She wanders around in the camp, then writes a letter, which he finds when he comes back.

The whole camp had left in a bus, to celebrate Nude Tuesday. Everybody is naked, in the bus.

He finds the letter, which reads: "Dear Bruno, I've made some terrible mistakes, but marrying you and having our beautiful girls isn't one of them.

GIVING BJÖRN A HAND JOB was MAYBE(???) one, as was the CHRISTMAS ANAL FLING with my idiot boss.

I am sorry but I realize, I NEED TO BE ALONE.

To somehow GET TO NOW MYSELF.

Love you, Laura."

He runs after them, and arriving, he tells her, all smiles, that the letter was wonderful, and she, also smiling brightly: "I am so pleased we want the same thing, Bruno. Now we can consciously uncouple." He: "yes. ...I'm wondering if maybe I have feelings for Rufus. I think I have a lot to unscramble".

And they walk off, hand in hand.

film nudity
sbeecher-9740616 October 2022
Brilliant concept, and although some of the lines were simply crass in the absence of jokes, it was an enjoyable experience.

This film tackles a topic I have never seen done as well: the role of the body as a sex object. The nudity is overwhelming (in a good way), and a large portion of the plot is about invigorating sex drive, but this movie is not largely sexual to the viewer. Sex is an attraction people feel, not the bodies themselves. So many movies sexualize characters, almost always women, by revealing their bodies, removing the viewer from their active role in sexual attraction and placing it on the character's body as a sex object. This film does the opposite, not bothering to make the character sexy to the viewers but rather to the other characters on screen who are participating, and does not focus on specific genders, body types, or skin colors.
