Such an intriguing case.

1900, and after three months of courting Herbert Bennett and Alice have set the date for their wedding. Their joy is ended, when Herbert is arrested for the murder of a widow, named Mrs Mary Hood, who's body was found on The Dunes in Yarmouth.

It's another fascinating murder mystery, I'm not too sure there's much of an element of doubt here, there's plenty of further reading available about Bennett. The fact that her necklace was found in his lodgings, how on Earth could he have gotten hold of it.

It really is an intriguing story, a fascinating insight into the operations of Herbert and Mary, I didn't see them as a pair of confidence tricksters. It can perhaps be assumed that their marriage became somewhat toxic.

I could watch Philip Glenister in anything, good to see him in an earlier role, such a good actor. It's also easy to forget that Amanda Holden has been around quite a while, a pretty good actress to boot, the pair were good together I thought.

8/10.

In 1900 the body of Mary Hood was found dead in Yarmouth. She was there on holiday with her young daughter.

In Woolwich Arsenal, Herbert Bennett (Philip Glenister) worked in an armament factory. He was engaged to Alice Meadows. Only she is unaware that Herbert is a petty thief.

He was a burglar and married to Mary, the dead woman found in Yarmouth. Although separated, they had been involved in criminal activities together before they split up. They had also had visited South Africa where the Boer war was raging.

Mary was seen with an unknown man in Yarmouth. It is believed that this would had been Herbert Bennett. He was caught with some items of his wife's jewellery.

It looks like an open and shut case. Edward Woodward presents some doubts. On the night of Mary's murder, Herbert Bennett was at work in Woolwich Arsenal.

There was a lot of conjecture as to the identity of the man Mary Hood was with in Yarmouth. Some speculation that Herbert was a spy for the Boers, maybe passing secrets.

Not mentioned was that the great defence barrister Edward Marshall Hall acted for Herbert. Only the jury did not buy the defence.

Interesting for an early role for Philip Glenister although he never looks that young. The episode was directed by his father.
