Rather enjoyable adventure...
paul_haakonsen23 February 2021
I sat down to watch the 2021 animated movie "Scooby-Doo! The Sword and the Scoob" together with my 10 year old son, whom enjoy these animated movies quite a lot.

And every now and again there is a unique addition to the "Scooby-Doo" franchise, and I will say that "Scooby-Doo! The Sword and the Scoob" was definitely one of those instances. Why? Well, because the story in this was particularly enjoyable, and the characters were quite interesting as well.

The storyline told in this particular "Scooby-Doo" adventure was rather enjoyable, and it was one that really appealed to me, given my interest in the dark ages and role-playing games, so this was definitely pure fun.

As with many previous "Scooby-Doo" adventures, it is always a blast to have the voice acting talents of Grey Griffin, Matthew Lillard, Frank Welker and Kate Micucci on the cast list. And this particular 2021 adventure also had the voice of Nick Frost on the list.

The art style and animation is very enjoyable, and it has that classic "Scooby-Doo" feel to it that I grew up watching and still enjoy this to this day.

My rating of "Scooby-Doo! The Sword and the Scoob" settles on a well-deserved seven out of ten stars. If you enjoy these animated movies, then you most certainly have to sit down to watch this 2021 addition to the franchise.

standard Scooby adventure
SnoopyStyle25 July 2021
After solving another mystery, the gang goes on vacation in London. They drive the Mystery Machine into the countryside and arrive at a town which is the former site of Camelot. Somehow, they are brought back in time and they wake up in old Camelot.

This is animated Scooby-Doo adventure. It maintains the standard Scooby tropes. It has its fun. It's one more episode. It's not going to break any new ground. The fantastical is explained in a ridiculous way and the mask is always pulled off.

I love this. It's fun and nice to sit back and watch. I am a big fan of the SCOOBY Doo cartoons and movies. I stumbled upon this. So I watched it. My sister loved it. Me not so much. But it is good for kids. The idea of dragons and wizards was really cool. She said to give this a 10/10, but I'm not going to 🙃, I think your little ones will love it it's certainly fun adventure with a predictable plot twists, enjoy and have fun

Overall 5/10 for me.

A Good Time-Traveling Mystery, But Has Some Inaccuracies
jeremycrimsonfox1 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I was looking forward to this film after seeing the trailer. In this movie, Mystery Inc. fly to jolly old England after solving yet another mystery and busing another guy in a mask causing trouble, However, the vacation takes a mysterious turn when they arrive at Norville der Morgana, as after a library trip to look up a story about Sir Norville, a supposed ancestor of Shaggy, the town becomes abandoned, and the gang face Morgan le Fey herself, and after a short chase into an ancient henge, the sorceress uses a spell that sends the gang back in time to the age of King Arthur.

Basically, this is a good animated movie. The idea of the gang ending up back in the Dark Ages is a neat prospect, and the scene where they are warped has some nice nods to past DTV adventures and even some classic shows (even those that can be considered alternate universes, meaning they could also be going through space, as well as a scene of Captain Caveman dancing, possibly done for a cameo of sorts).

However, this movie is far from perfect. It has some cheesy moments (the beginning has a guy watching Thundarr The Barbarian, but the voiceover dialogue makes it sound like an abridged parody on YouTube), and the worst part is King Arthur is shown to be a greedy, heartless king who is a coward and clumsy, with Merlin portrayed as wise, but a weird guy who burps the alphabet in fire, and knows who Barney Rubble is. Despite its shortcomings, it has some good humor, and a neat story (with a twist at the end, which I won't spoil, but is a good fan service).

it actually was pretty good

In all honesty I haven't seen an enjoyable Scooby Doo in a long time. This was.... okay. Different from the classic scooby doo's, ending felt a bit like ' they had to squeeze in a bad guy somewhere' moment. I think this is the new standard of scooby doo and from all the bad 'creative' ones, this one was okay.

An enjoyable ride with ups and downs
reubenally12 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The comedy felt Scooby-Doo! The Sword and the Scoob was like a regular Scooby doo movie. I LOVED IT!

The comedy felt similar but there was new jokes here and there. It felt like i was a child again. There call back to the other scooby doo movies and shows was interesting, when i saw it i felt excited and happy, but it felt like it promised more than what it seemed to imply. There was no explanation for why the flash back was there. I hope that they follow up on this in a next film. Aside from that i loved it and i enjoyed the ride.

It's very average and it looks like amatures did it, somehow. I really don't get this plot. Why Arthur painted as evil and lazy king if the real story says opposite. This plot didn't have logical view, characters didn't convince me at all(not to mention that creepy dance by Daphne, it looked like she was mentally ill). I'm grown up now and I don't feel hype at all. I'm sure, when I was kid, the quality standed over quantity. Maybe create less movies but better ones? Huh...

Scooby Doo goes medieval
TheLittleSongbird3 June 2022
Have been a big fan of Scooby Doo since single digits. Love most of the incarnations, especially 'Scooby Doo Where are You' and 'The Scooby Doo Show', and even like a couple of the negatively received ones better than most (personally considered 'The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo' underrated). Most of the animated Scooby Doo films range between good and great, especially 'Zombie Island' and 'Witch's Ghost'. Didn't care for every single one of them, 'Monster of Mexico' didn't do much for me and 'Return to Zombie Island' was a real disappointment.

There was no doubt about seeing 'The Sword and the Scoob', not just because of Scooby Doo completest sake but also the idea was truly fascinating and pretty unique for the franchise. There is also nothing wrong with being different and different has come off well, 'Goblin King' was a change of pace also and am personally quite fond of that. 'The Sword and the Scoob' turned out to be highly enjoyable and well done. Not on the same level as 'Zombie Island' and 'Witch's Ghost' but infinitely better than the previous two Scooby Doo films.

Good things are many. The animation is vibrantly colourful and atmospheric, everything looking smooth and the backgrounds are rich in detail. The music had groove and atmosphere and didn't sound outdated or out of place. The voice acting is on the money with no exception, especially Matthew Lillard who has proven himself to be a more than worthy successor to the immortal Casey Kasem. Not as good, but the best Shaggy voice actor since as he is the only successor to nail the mix of funny, endearing goofiness and likeability.

Referencing is smart and nostalgic, never feeling thrown in, random or cheesy. 'The Sword and the Scoob' has a lot of funny writing that also flows and has heart. Shaggy's lines are especially fun. The throwbacks to the past are done with respect and affection for classic Scooby, which was a delight for this fan. There is a nicely paced and engaging story, thin on mystery but not over obvious and benefits massively from the colourful and nostalgic medieval setting and the imaginative and non confusing time travel. As well as some nice creepy conflict. Scooby and Shaggy are nailed and Velma is at her least annoying and true to character in a while. Did enjoy Daphne's stronger and more quirky personality and it gels a lot better than in 'Happy Halloween Scooby Doo'.

Not everything works. Merlin's character writing is far too silly and this is the least likeable and actually pretty obnoxious interpretation of King Arthur in recent memory. Am aware and appreciate what the film was trying to do, but for me it didn't work. The ending is too much of a tacked on cheat and is too neat.

Once again, Fred comes over as rather wet and borderline sappy. Where is the more resourceful leader that makes the decisions of the earlier incarnations?

Concluding, highly enjoyable. 7/10.

Scooby-Doo! The Sword and the Scoob
studioAT24 August 2021
These straight to DVD Scooby-Doo films are always a bit hit and miss, but they do tend to be a bit more 'out there' than the TV series.

Sending the gang back in time is a neat idea, but there are some very long, plodding scenes, and everyone, medieval or not speaks as if it's 2021, which is jarring.

At least Fred isn't a total idiot for a change, but this wasn't one of my favourite outings for the gang.

Excellent Scooby Doo Film!
fiiig993 March 2021
Nice return to form.

Like any long series with many different iterations some direct to video Scooby Doo adventures are better than others. This is one of them. Really liked the humour, the 2D animation style is perfect (3d , lego, and stylized2d is all not as good as this style). It kept it consistent that probably all the monsters are eventually debunked at the end. Much like you know who is guilty in a columbo episode from the start but how you get there is the fun.

Nice references to a classic "Thundarr the barbarian" by the same creators. Hopefully this might mean they are finally going to revive this series too.

We rented it via internet and it was well worth the price.

Highly recommended.

it's cool, different but fail in the end

Warning: Spoilers
I loved the movie but I didn't like the ending that same story of solving "logically" (because of course it doesn't have a lot of logic) the supernatural / magical mystery doesn't need to be resolved as always I wanted them to do it as a witch's ghost and zombie island, the supernatural is real and that's it let's find a solution I also liked the new, more current and different dynamic has a lot of potential

Yet Another Subpar Scooby
vilafire25 April 2021
This is really low quality stuff. The best moments were the shout-outs to the older series. Thank God we can still go back and watch those. Even many of the older movies are good. This wasn't. There just wasn't much magic in this one. And the ending is ridiculously stupid. Even the character designs for Arthur and Merlin and a dragon are all pretty terrible. And the animation is the same stale work unfortunately.

All the men are stupid and useless for the first half of the runtime. Fred doesn't think DNA has anything to do with solving mysteries or that the Brits drive on the opposite side of the road. At one point he literally shivers in fright while Daphne and Velma heroically stand up to the villain. Daphne is now a complete perfect Mary Sue. That is so boring. It may have been progressive ten years ago but, sadly, at this point in time if they wanted to subvert our expectations with gender roles they need to show Fred being competent and heroic again. And arguably one of the most heroic and good men in all of fiction, King Arthur, is portrayed as a bumbling, selfish, stupid jerk. Both Fred and Arthur do end up re turning to form for the most part but that inconsistency only highlights how dumb their earlier portrayals were.

Fingers crossed the next one is better. I did like how they showed Daphne and Fred as a couple. But bring back the darker colors, the spooky atmosphere, and the MYSTERY.

scobby doo goes back to the dark ages
LetsReviewThat2616 September 2022
Yet another fascinating and fun scooby doo movie. This time the gang are transported to medieval times after shaggy goes looking for where his ancestors used to live. There are some interesting characters and I thought nick frost did a good merlin. Jason issacs played king arthur. He came off as a good friend to the gang and someone that we could see again. As usural shaggy and scoobs apitite leads them to danger and we get an interesting movie as velma believes time travel is not real and tries to dissprove everything. Dalphne and freds romance goes no where but there is a hint of something there. Overall this is another fun scooby doo adventure with a fresh interesting idea and good supporting voice cast.

Scooby Doo: Where are your Incredible Movies?
aleshaangel3 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
SPOILER***

Recently, the Scooby Doo movies (Return to Zombie Island, The Sword and the Scoob) have repeatedly gone with this, "we are actors" as the 'villains' element. I highly discourage this new element they are going with, as this movie was another large let down. There are more 'filler' scenes in this movie than any other Scooby Doo I have watched. I always long that the next, new Scooby Doo movie will be similar to Zombie Island, Witches Ghost, Alien Invaders, or even Camp Scare. These movies have depth, mystery, and suspense in which this new Scooby movie was lacking. Disappointed to say the least.

Scooby-Doo: The Sword and The Scoob: Trash or Treasure?
bm-6942418 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Wow. The movie was actually okay, until the last few minutes where they throw up in the viewers face by saying the entire Medevial world the gang is in is fake. Wow, Velma sucks. The movie also has a problem with it's pacing. Some scenes feel like there going on forever like Daphne swordfighting while other scenes are two short like the plane scene in the beginning. Can we talk about the animation for a second. Why can't WB give these movies a bigger budget, there were some scenes where I couldn't look because it looked very bad like the scene when Morgan La Fly or something carries Shaggy away. I'm getting sick of Velma saying everythin is fake and so is pretty much every other Scooby viewer, but WB doesn't care because they make that MOOLA. If you need something to keep the kids quiet, then definitely get this. All I can say is at least it's better than the snore fests that was Happy Halloween Scooby-Doo, SCOOB, and Scooby-Doo Return to Zombie Island

Strange
brookenichole-9805428 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
After the insanity that was the Halloween movie, I was scared to watch this one. And I will say, this one wasn't bad. It was entertaining for the most part with some funny lines. Velma actually sounded like Velma this time around and was fun to watch. I did not enjoy Merlin or the story. It wasn't captivating enough, and I was wondering why Daphne was acting strange? But, I did enjoy her scenes with the competition. I saw two mistakes that were very scary: when they are facing the dragon King Arthur appears even though he was eaten! Also, when the assistant is walking, her eyes turn white. Overall, a disappointment.

I honestly don't get the logic of people who love this!
stefanantonie8 March 2021
Why was this movie ever created, and most inportantly, WHY/HOW DO PEOPLE EVEN STILL LIKE IT?! It doesn't make any sense! This movie was completely out of the Scooby Doo context. I mean, seriously? If you wanna make crossovers, make them into the "Scooby Doo and guess who?" series, but not here too! It's just awful! Never watch this if you don't wanna waste an hour of your life for a garbage!

I wait for the movies to come out!! And I really really love the ones where they travel!!! Love those antique places. Though since the last movie of Halloween, they've changed Dafne's personality quite a bit. Other than that I really love that the last films are keeping with the same story line.

Excellent Scooby-Doo movie!
luisruiz-1269725 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Before I start my review I want to direct my attention to the user Stefanantonie. They have made THREE negative reviews (which is odd because we are usually only allowed to leave one per person) and is pretty much spamming the section with negative reviews while ADMITTING to not even have watched the movie. I kindly ask that Stefanantonie find something more productive to do with their time rather than bashing a cartoon children's movie they haven't even seen. Can IMBD delete the multiple reviews from the same person and leave just one?

Ok now to my review for the movie: SPOILER ALERT

I LOVED the gangs personality in this movie. Here they truly felt like friends and like they had a genuine connection. Especially the beginning part where they were sight seeing together. I also enjoyed the pre mystery they solved on the airplane. It kind of gives you a feeling of what the gang has to go through.

The time travel does end up being fake which was honestly a relief to me because I believe the true Scooby essence is when there's a logical or scientific explanation to the situation. One of the things that makes Scooby unique compared to the plethora of supernatural shows out there is that it debunks the supernatural rather than proving it. I feel this teaches kids that they don't have to fear monsters and it teaches them critical thinking skills. It also teaches us adults that real monsters in this world can be people. Pretty deep in my opinion. They also found a very creative way to address that as well. It was a creative explanation and didn't seem convoluted at all.

I also LOVED Daphne's personality. It was a perfect blend of quirky Be Cool Daphne with the independent strong WNSD Daphne. Also the dragons design was amazing and I loved how it can talk. It added an extra layer of spookiness to it.

There are also Easter eggs that referenced past Scooby media. This showed the amount of care and detail put into this movie.

The animation is beautiful as always. I love how they have kept the same animation style since the 2010 DTV movies. It's like an HD version of the original SDWAY animation. It's like if you went back in time and gave the original animators a huge animation budget. Same designs just clearer, crisper, and more fluid.

The background design is also gorgeous as well. I truly hope they keep this design forever haha.

All in all it was a fantastic movie filled with action, Easter eggs, mystery, and adventure. I would give it a 10/10
